Celebrate!Dear Supporters and Friends,

The La Playa Unit of Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary invites you to participate in our milestone 25th Annual Celebration of Champions®. It has been our gift to have produced the Celebration for 25 years and helped thousands of children and families who have journeyed along the cancer treatment highway since 1996.

We send a special thank you to more than 2,000 supporters who have donated to the Celebration since 1996; some of you have been contributors from the start. Your loyal support has dramatically improved the Peckham Center’s emotional support programming- here are just a few examples:

1996 2019

This year’s special 25th fundraising goal is $625,000. Your contributions of this amount, combined with the $1-for-$1 match we have obtained for our 25th anniversary, would send $1.25M to the Peckham Center. Help us celebrate this special year and increase your contribution as its power will be doubled by the match opportunity.

Please take a moment to review important information in this brochure about the programs your contribution will make possible. Truly, these vital pediatric cancer support programs would not exist without you. Just as importantly, your contribution will provide a healing day away from the hospital filled with fun, laughter, and inspiration – for patients, families, and sponsors alike.

We look forward to celebrating the bravery of all Peckham Center Champions, current and past, on May 16, 2020, and making our 25th Celebration the most successful ever!

About Rady Children’s Peckham Center for Cancer & Blood DisordersPart of a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Peckham Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders is the largest pediatric hematology/oncology program serving San Diego, Riverside and Imperial counties. Children from around the world come to Rady Children’s for comprehensive cancer care spanning evaluation, treatment, pain management, palliative care, oncologic emergencies and specialized cancer treatment, including chemotherapy, biotherapy and immunotherapy.

The Peckham Center offers state-of-the art facilities to meet the region’s growing need for comprehensive pediatric cancer care. Its treatment, procedure, and outpatient exam rooms include the latest technology and equipment. An additional 38 private in-patient rooms provide advanced air filtering equipment for the most fragile patients.

At the Peckham Center, cancer is the most frequent diagnosis, but patients also are treated for blood disorders such as hemophilia, sickle cell disease and von Willebrand’s disease.

Use of Celebration FundsIn addition to the healing Celebration day itself, net proceeds help fund nationally acclaimed emotional and social support programs for patients and their families that would not be fully funded without the generosity of Celebration sponsors. These support programs include: hematology/oncology parent liaisons, child life services, counseling services, and other supportive programming. For more information about the Center’s complete psychosocial program please visit: http://www.rchsd.org/programs-services/cancer-blood-disorders.

My life with doctors, nurses and hospitals began four hours after my birth with emergency surgery. Subsequent years of reconstructive surgeries were interrupted by a diagnosis of Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia at age four. This new diagnosis began yet more treatments at Rady Children’s. At age 10, I was discharged home to die as all treatment options were exhausted. My fighting spirit paired with my amazingly supportive family and Rady Children’s doctors and nurses, who didn’t give up on me won all my health battles.

I’ve spent 25 of my 32 years with doctors and nurses, and during this time, although my cancer experience was emotionally and physically painful, it was also filled with a world of caring and compassionate people. Over the course of my many treatments, I have witnessed the development of the Peckham Center’s emotional support programs and what extraordinary gifts these programs are, each designed to address consequences of today’s far more complex cancer treatments.

The Celebration is deeply meaningful; my family and I look forward to it every year. I have been lucky to have been a part of this event since the beginning in 1996, even driving down to San Diego while studying at the University of California, Santa Barbara. I met my future fiancé, Christopher, at the 2002 Celebration of Champions, and our love story continued when I accepted his marriage proposal at the 2014 Celebration of Champions.

It is because of my medical challenges that I feel blessed with a heartfelt appreciation of life. My involvement in the medical field continues as an electronic health records training coordinator at Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Centers.

Support programs funded by the Celebration of Champions provide inspiration, strength, hope and love to so many families; and I am very thankful that these programs exist. On behalf of all Champions and their families, we appreciate you and your support more than words could ever say.

courageSo Why Celebrate?

Doctors, nurses, and families work together to ensure these kids are healthy enough to attend this event. And they are there every step of the way, from bedside to Celebration day.

This special event provides a day of normalcy in these children’s lives,

where they can have fun being a kid, spend a few moments outside hospital

walls, and take quality time with family.

Coming together is the most powerful medicine—no matter

what age, ailment, or walk of life. Whether survivors, in treatment or

remembering those we have lost, the community heals together.

The funds raised help kids be strong during their fight against cancer. From physical resources to emotional guidance, we give them and their families the things they need to cope. Your donation helps them be brave against all odds.

The kids are the real champions at this event—cheered on all sides

by military, sports stars, and celebrities. They are the ones

signing autographs and taking their rightful place in the limelight.

Our Champions are the true heroes: laughing, smiling

and teaching the rest of us something important about

life. Because they are our inspiration—and because

they deserve it.

I am so proud to be a part of planning the 25th Annual Celebration of Champions®. Having attended all prior 24 Celebration of Champions events, I truly understand the impact of the day for all who attend, as well as the impact the fundraising has on the quality of our psychosocial programs.

As our hematology/oncology program has grown, so has the complexity of the treatment for our patients. While this offers new hope to patients and their families, in some settings, it also increases the difficulties patients and their families experience during treatment. This underscores the importance of the need for ongoing evolution and expansion of the services offered by our psychosocial programs.

Through the generous contributions of the Celebration sponsors and volunteers, we have been successfully meeting the increasing needs for services and support. We are proud to report that for the ninth consecutive year, U.S. News & World Report has ranked the Rady Children’s Hospital Cancer Program among the top in the nation. Our outstanding psychosocial programs contributed to the high ranking, in addition to above-average 5-year cancer survival rates and the availability of novel, innovative therapies for our patients.

We are very grateful for the resources that support the continued improvement of our psychosocial programs, through which we offer hope and encouragement to our patients and their families during their medical journey. On behalf of all members of the Peckham Center, I thank you for your support and look forward to seeing you at the landmark 25th Annual Celebration of Champions®.

It doesn’t seem like 25 years have passed since a small, devoted cadre of Rady Children’s Auxiliary La Playa Unit members boarded a bus to Long Beach to view an event that gave birth to our Celebration of Champions® in 1996. Everyone was so inspired by what they had seen, we had a full slate of volunteers before even getting back to San Diego.

Our family has been touched by pediatric cancer diagnoses twice over the years. Even with medical professionals in our family, we were bewildered, confused and frightened by the maze of appointments, procedures, tests…and what the future held.

The impetus to bring caring emotional support services to the medical side of Rady Children’s cancer program sprang from experiencing first-hand the long journey that awaits all cancer patients. Thus, the bus to Long Beach was yet another trip on our journey of healing.

Looking back, I never imaged that this event would become so successful. On behalf of the Peckham Center staff, our La Playa Unit volunteers and my family, we send our grateful appreciation to Celebration sponsors and donors for your devoted 25 years of participation and support.

With love,

Nancy P.
