Executive Corner It’s hard to believe how fast this year has gone by. Yet, thinking back to the beginning of this school year, it’s hard to believe how far we’ve come. Last fall, we came into the school year without a clear understanding of what exactly we would be doing as Executive Officers for the Club Sports program. Each of us had been involved with our own teams, but had little understanding of how the whole program worked.

The first few weeks were busy, with lots of meetings and events. Paperwork piled up as the teams kicked off their seasons. Before long, we became comfortable with our roles and started to push ahead. As executives, we helped guide the program through the process of evaluating two teams petitioning to become a Club Sport, eventually voting in Women’s Basketball. We proposed the idea of the developmental tier to the council, which they approved. This tier will allow for more flexibility in what the program offers its teams.

The end of the fall semester was a nice chance to catch my breath, because when we came back in January, we hit the ground running. The spring semester started with each of us researching six other universities across the country, in order to find out more about their CS program and how we compare.

On top of that, there were more teams that wanted to be club sports, and we each had an individual semester long project. My project was preparing a presentation for us to give to the Student Activities Budget Council. This committee is made up of both administrative

staff and students. Our goal was to convince them that Club Sports deserved more money. Lizzy’s project was planning and organizing the Symposium, while Lindsey was in charge of the Banquet. Both of these events went very well.

And now we are wrapping up the year with Budget Points meetings and a little bit of end-of-the-year paperwork. In just a few days, we will be completely finished. Personally, I am amazed at everything that the

program has done. As the Executives, we would like to think that we had a lot to do with the program’s success this year. But in reality, we could have done nothing without all the great student-athletes and student-leaders that make up this program. So, on behalf of Lizzy, Lindsey, and myself, thank you for making Club Sports the best program on campus, and thanks for making this another great year. It was a pleasure serving the program as your Executive Officer.

The Alpine Ski team finished a very successful season at the Mid-Atlantic Regionals in Snowshoe, WV this past February. Despite a pretty warm winter season and a lack of snow, all teams performed well. Our Men’s team finished third overall in the Southeast Conference for the first time in over six years. The Women also had a solid finish, placing fourth for the Southeast. The team organized the first ever

alumni race and dinner in January. We are looking forward to hosting the event again during the 2012-2013 season to meet even more of our veteran team members. Lastly, as we say

goodbye to three of our officers from this year, we are excited to see what new faces will bring to the table. With sophomore Taylor Jones as Vice President, Chris Grunert as Treasurer, and Ashley “QTip” Cutrell as Secretary, we are all looking forward to an even more successful future.

Baseball The Appalachian State Club Baseball team is going into their 4th straight regional tournament with a 16-2 record. The team has won their conference four years straight, starting in 2009 when the team was officially founded. This year, the team beat Wilkes Community College varsity team in a fall scrimmage, took conference player and pitcher of the week every competition week, and is currently ranked 10th in the nation. The team is hoping to win its first ever regional tournament and make a run into the NCBA World Series this year. Seniors leaving the team include Hunter Glass, Jaime Gutierrez, Chase Mitchell and Scott Banks. New officers are – President: Dan Mason, Vice President: Josh Kelly, Treasurer: Curtis Batten and Secretary: Mike Aiello.

Women’s Basketball The 2011-2012 school year has been a monumental one for Women’s Basketball. After a few years of hard work and dedication we have finally claimed our spot as a Club Sport here at Appalachian State University. We had good Fall and Spring seasons, completing our first season as a part of the East Coast Women’s Club Basketball League and beating notable teams from all along the East coast. For the first time, we made it to the quarter finals at the NIRSA Regional Tournament at Georgia Southern. This was a large

accomplishment for our team because in the past

we have not made it further than the first round of bracket play. As a team we bonded, and created great chemistry. I thoroughly believe we have one of the most connected teams here at Appalachian, not only do we have a great time playing basketball but we have made lifelong friends through our club; who the majority of us spend most of our time with. We have one graduating senior, Allie Knorzer, who has dedicated so much to our team. She is one of the three original members left who began the creation of this team. Allie is a proven leader on and off the court, a tremendous athlete,

and an asset we will not be quick to replace. Our team would like to congratulate her on her acceptance into medical school and wish her the best in her future endeavors. We are sure she will be successful, just as she created success for our team, which is why we have named her MVP for the 2011-12 season. This has been an exciting and rewarding year for us and we look forward to the addition of more players next year to add to our basketball family.

Climbing The climbing team ended its year on a great note. On April 20th a few team members traveled to Boston to compete in the Collegiate Climbing Series Nationals. Everyone who went scored very well. Ryan Scurfield did exceptionally well, scoring first in his division. The team ended up securing a rank of 5th in the nation. On April 23rd the team screened two climbing movies in IG Greer in order to raise money for the team. The double feature was

very successful and everyone who came out enjoyed the movies and raffle prizes. Earlier in the semester the team held the 10th semi-annual competition

“SoCo X”. Drew Myer from Chattanooga scored first in the advanced men’s division and Jennifer Poe placed first in the advanced women’s division.

Audrey Burton is the president elect. Austin Waggoner and Dallas Pitts are the VP Elects. Brandon Clement is the Treasurer elect, and Bryce Overy is the secretary elect.

Cycling Another outstanding year for the ASU Cycling team as we continued our national prominence! We continued the streak of placing a person or team on the podium at every National Championship we have attended since 2008! Since 2008 we have had 4 individual national champions and 3 team nationals championships! We plan to keep this streak up and continue to bring more gold medals back to ASU for years to come!

Equestrian This year was full of new accomplishments and has been a huge success for the ASU Equestrian Team. We placed, on average, higher in the IHSA Hunt Seat competitions this year than ever before. We sent our own Katie Sedlmeyer on the Dressage team to the IDA Nationals, our first teammate to ever qualify for Nationals! Our Western team established showing status and competed in all of the IHSA competitions. The entire team experienced a huge growth in membership over the past two semesters, totaling 49 active members! This semester, our team became involved with volunteering for Horse Helpers of the High Country, the only non-profit large animal rescue organization in the high country. We recognized the organization’s need for barn management and horse care help, and were more than happy to lend our knowledge and abilities. This has been a great bonding experience for our team and a way to get our name out in the community! The new club officers were elected this semester and

are eager to see the team’s accomplishments continue to advance. Katelyn Young, a member of the Dressage team, is the new President; Katie Sedlmeyer, a member of the Dressage team, is our new Vice President; Kristen Clark, a member of the Hunt Seat team, now holds the treasurer position, and Chloe Paddison, a member of the Hunt Seat team, is the new secretary. Along with the new officers, we elect new captains for each showing team. The new Dressage team captain is Nikka Hronis, the Hunt Seat captain is Mallery Patterson, and the Western captain is Danielle Plourd. We have evaluated our progress as a team over the past year and see more potential than ever to continue moving forward. With our membership and team interest so high, we have the ability to have a bigger impact with what we do. Our goals for the next season include: hosting more home competitions, organizing the lesson program more efficiently to accommodate the membership growth, and to provide more team bonding

opportunities. Recapping on the year, the team grew as a whole and everyone progressed individually with skill level and participation. Where our numbers went up in competition, so did our relationships with each other and our involvement within the club. The members of our team show immense passion for the sport and work very hard to make our team as strong as possible. When we compete, we put our whole heart into the competition and hold our ethics to the highest standard. Everyone is supportive and encouraging to each other and that shows with the close bond we all share. Our team will continue to grow in size, and with that, capability. This past year has laid the path for further and greater accomplishments. The new officers and captains of the team recognize the potential for our team and will lead us to be the best possible team we can be.

Fencing Club has incurred a lot of interesting changes in this past year. Towards the start there was a massive influx of new members, something the club desperately needed. Since then ASU Fencing began the training of these new members in the combative sport of fencing up until the second semester, when competition was introduced. Over the course of this past semester the ASU Fencing club competed in a variety of events, including the North Carolina Divisionals at NC State University. More recently a small group from the club

attended a collection of three tournaments in Wilmington, North Carolina. There everyone did a really excellent job and gave their all, and more importantly all of the new members that the club has retained got a taste of fencing’s true competitive nature. In preparation for the coming year many of our members have moved up in the ranks to the point where the officer ranks have changed almost entirely. Alex Fogleman has been promoted from Vice President to President, Addison Miles has moved up from his position as Secretary to Vice President,

Arthur Vernooij has taken up the position of Secretary, Michael Zanga has become the club’s new Armorer, and finally, Cody Degenhart will remain as the club’s Treasurer. From here, the club will continue to set goals in terms of making practice a fun experience for everybody and encouraging member attendance and competition while building a very cohesive community that will collectively contribute their efforts to the club as a whole.

Ice Hockey

The Appalachian State Ice hockey team was able to make the BRHC playoffs this year, after being defeated by UNC-Charlotte. Chris Soucie and Timur Migirov will take over the team next year as President and Vice President. The goals for next year are to promote awareness of Ice Hockey throughout Appalachian State and to have another strong season.

Men’s Lacrosse The Men’s Lacrosse team ended their season with an overall record of 5 - 5, although this is not what we had hoped for we see this season as a growing season as we had a bunch of new players and two new coaches. We are looking forward to seeing what we can do next year as we feel we have a lot of potential. This year we elected two new officers, a new Treasurer and Vice President. The President and Secretary were re-elected by the team to continue their role with the team. Our new Vice President, Grey Tampa was elected by the team to take over for the next year, along with Dylan Godbout who was elected as the new Treasurer to replace our leaving Senior Treasurer. These

new officers along with the old will put in the hard work to get our team ready for the upcoming season. Next year we are hoping to come out with a winning record and beat all the teams we know we can. We are planning to make it to the SELC play-offs, which has not happened since the 2009-2010 season. Overall the season was not a let down to us but a building season and we will carry what we have learned this year and build on it next year. This team has the potential to go places and we plan to do just that next year.

Women’s Lacrosse The Appalachian State University Women’s Lacrosse Team accomplished so much in the 2011-2012 season. A big accomplishment happed during the first game of the season with a 12 to 9 win over Lees McRae, a varsity Division II team. From there on the team just kept improving. Two weeks into the official lacrosse season in the spring, the team was polled at number 16 out of 189 club teams in the nation by the Women’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association. This is a polled based on improvement in a team from the last official spring season. One of the team’s favorite accomplishments happened during the last tournament of the season, the Endless Summer Tournament at UNCW. It is a tournament that the team looks forward to every year, where we can go play lacrosse and hang out on the beach. The Women’s Lacrosse Team was able to finish second in the tournament and play one of the best games they have had this year, against UNCW. The season ended with one of the best records they have seen in a while, 10-1-8. It was an amazing year not only on the field but off the field as well, because of the cohesion between members. This excites everyone on what the 2012-2013 season will bring. The

new officers, Emily Ayotte (Treasurer), Alexis Brundage (Secretary), Anna Norwood (Vice President), and Lizzy Lagasse (President) are already underway preparing for the 2012-2013 lacrosse season. With so many of the team’s members graduating in May 2012, one of the officers goals is to establish an alumni game. It is something alumni have always talked about, but the team has never had enough graduating members to start one. With the help

of the 2012 seniors, it might just be successful. Another big goal the new officers would like to accomplish is to have a large-scale home tournament. With Boone’s

geographical location, the team has always had trouble in getting teams to journey up the mountain to come play. This upcoming year’s hope is that they might be able to overcome these factors and gets some wins on home turf. With the continued improvements of the team this year, there is no doubt that they have a chance at making the Regional tournament in April 2013 and that is what the officers have as the main priority for the upcoming year.

Racquetball This year Club Racquetball has been hard at work. They competed at a large tournament at NC State this year and gave the other teams a run for their money. ASU’s Club Racquetball had several semifinalists in doubles and singles. The team has been successful due to well-structured practices. They have been drilling and working more as a team. Next year Club Racquetball has four new officers. They plan to keep the structure of the team the same, but they would like to compete more in tournaments. Also, the team, unfortunately, is losing many seniors so they are in the process of recruiting new members. ASU’s Club Racquetball has changed the team for the better this year and it has really shown amazing results. The team plans to continue improving and they are hoping for an even better year of success next year.

Men’s Rugby AHO Rugby would like to thank all fans and supporters for a fantastic season. Winning our conference and coming within a point of making it to the sweet sixteen were our most significant accomplishments of the season. As we say goodbye to seniors Drew Zabor, Seth Saunders, Cory Jones, John-David Dorsey and Travis Connor,we would like to acknowledge the contributions that they have made to this team, and the incredible amount of work that has gone into this season. President Michael Markofski, Treasurer Matt Markofski and Match Secretary Harris Lewis will continue filling their roles from the past year. Ben Harrington-Smith moves to Vice President while his spot as the Club Sports Representative is filled by Thomas Longo. We hope to continue the high standards of rugby set by the past generations, and we can’t thank everyone enough for the contributions they have made to this season.

Women’s Rugby This year our team has had lots of accomplishments to celebrate. Everyone on our team dedicated time and put forth tremendous effort to advance ourselves to a level we haven’t been at for a while.

Fall Semester we played ten matches against different teams including Virginia Tech, Duke, UVA, USC, and Clemson University. Some of these matches took place during the all women Rucktoberfest tournament which we hosted. The Rucktoberfest tournament brought nine different women’s teams to Boone for a great weekend of rugby. All of these matches helped prepare us for Spring Semester. Spring semester is set aside for matches against teams within our matrix division. During our matrix season we went undefeated this year winning matches against Elon, UNCC, UNCG, and Wake Forest University. After winning our final matrix game against UNCC we advanced on to Regionals. We traveled to Alabama and played against the College of Charleston and Lee University. We were victorious in our game against the College of Charleston and lost to Lee by one try and one kick making the final score 12-5. Despite our loss to Lee University we returned to Alabama for Nationals. We played matches against Templeton University and Lee University to determine our rank within the top 16 teams in the nation. Next year we will return to the pitch as a nationally ranked team. Thanks to our successes on and off the field this year we were voted “Turn Around Team of the Year” by Club Sports Program. Overall we have had a great year and I hope that next year will be just as amazing. Next year we hope to make lots of new recruits at club expo, host a great Rucktoberfest tournament, and practice with the same intensity we had this year so that next year can be just as successful for our team.

Snowboarding The Snowboarding team has had an amazing year. Our team this year has seen a rise in our accomplishments from previous years. The women’s team swept the conference in individual medals and took first in the conference as a team. The men’s team got second in the conference. Both teams attended the regional championships where women took first place and men took second. Our team goals for next year are to start out by recruiting some new faces in the fall and acclimate them to the group. Once the winter season starts we will be training on the slopes in order to maintain our success at the races. This year we had several events that we traveled up and down the east coast to compete in. We had a total of 26 members come to the race in Snowshoe, West Virginia where we enjoyed a foot of snowfall during the weekend. Our

regional competition also took place at Snowshoe; where we represented the dirty south well. Following Regionals, two of our top riders traveled to Sunday River, Maine to compete at Nationals.

Our team as a whole has grown in so many ways this year. As the newly elected Vice President, I have been in the unique position to see the transformation of this team over the past two years. As some of our fondest senior teammates move on to bigger and better things this spring we still look forward to the upcoming season. Our fearless leader and president for the past three years Chad Strickland will be among those graduating. He will be missed but we are sure that our new President Kim Ellison will easily follow Chad’s great accomplishments in the upcoming year. With our team nearly doubling in size this season,t we were very lucky to not experience the growing pains that we expected. Our newest group of racers, consisting of mostly freshmen, has become an integral part of our team and the returning members have welcomed them with open arms. We look forward to next year being even more gnar than the last.

Women’s Soccer The Appalachian Women’s Club soccer team had a quite eventful year. We started the fall season with a great group of returning players. A few new faces, but mostly old. A new coach named Davis who was a great addition to the team. We traveled to Elon and came out with a win. Traveled to Virginia Tech for a tournament and had a bunch of fun. Even though the team didn’t make it to Sunday for the semi finals they still had a great time hanging out and bonding and laughing. Next we traveled to Radford, Virginia for a double header and played Radford and Virginia Tech. The field we played at was right next to a beautiful river. The team played well in the games and celebrated afterwards at a Mexican Resturant. It was delicious Mexican food and a bunch of fun. The next weekend we played a game at home against Wake Forest and came out with a 2-0 win. That ended the teams season. The season went well but unfortunately one player, Hilary Bunn, did get hurt during it and wasn’t able to continue playing. She has been missed on the field ever since. The team experienced another loss as well. Their former coach for the 2010-2011 season, Sam Rathnow, passed away on December 4th 2011. It was a horrible loss and the team was devastated, and from there on out we were playing for Sam and boy did it show in our spring season.

We came back hot and ready for some action in December and started practicing. It was a struggle at first to get some games on the schedule, but the team worked it out. Our first game was against Chapel Hill but the team decided to cancel it because of the weather. The next weekend the team traveled to Clemson to play two games one against Clemson and one against UGA. We beat UGA 2-0 and then lost to Clemson in a tough match 1-0. The team celebrated at Moe’s after the games and cheered some burritos. The next game was against Wake

Forest at Wake Forest. It was a good game and the team won 1-0. We came back from Spring Break ready to run and played USC at home. We came out with a big 3-0 win. The

weather didn’t hold up as much as we hoped unfortunately and we were not able to play our second home game against High Point. Next up was the tournament at Clemson. The team headed down there with not as big of a team as they hoped for, but everyone was ready to kick some butt! The team played their first game against Duke and tied 0-0. The next game was against ECU. App came out with a big win in that game after some struggling with the ref and a freak PK called on our goal keeper. Luckily the PK was missed and the team ended up winning 1-0. Next up was NC State. The game was close, but App was able to pull out a 1-0 win! The team made it to Sunday for the first time in four years! They played Clemson in the Semi-Finals and ended up losing 1-0,

some action”

so we placed 3rd in the tournament. The next tournament was the Chapel Hill 7 vs. 7. We came to the tournament with only 2 subs played 7 games in 2 days and ended up placing second placing out of 15 teams. Losing to UNC in the finals 2-0. Overall the team had a great year we played great and really bonded as a team. We have all brand new officers this coming year. We have Katie Kaplan stepping

in as President, Kylie Pain as Vice President, Virginia Gills from Virginia stepping in as secretary, and Bailey Pages stepping in as treasurer. The Goals for next year are winning games, bonding as a team, having fun, finding a new coach, and maybe even throwing a fundraiser!

Swimming Appalachian State Swimming has had an incredible year. The current officer group, Amanda Gray (President), Rita Welder (Vice President), Thomas Drye (Treasurer), and Dan Wallace (Secretary) have worked very hard to make this the best year the swim club has ever had. The hard work of the officer group and the teams members resulted in the swim club receiving “Club Sport’s Team of the Year” award. It was a complete honor to receive this award after all the hard work placed into this team.

With a total of 7 swim meets this year, the swim club came away with three overall wins, the biggest of which was at UNCG’s first ever home meet. The men’s team MVP and runner up for the year were Kristian Hellem and Jake Schild respectively. The woman’s team MVP and runner up for the year were Stephanie Bayag and Haley Lingle. MVP and runner-up were chosen based on points scored for the entire year. This year started off with with a scavenger hunt all across Boone during the first week of practice. This event was

designed for the freshman and new members to get to know each other and see some of the sights of Boone as well. This event really brought a lot of swimmers together, and most who attended this event participated for the rest of the year. Our fall semester included a home meet as well as two away meets, one at Elon and the other at High Point. The swim club also held various team socials such as bowling, team tailgates, and a formal. The spring semester included three away meets: the University of Georgia, UNCG, and Georgia Tech: as well as a home meet to conclude the year. Besides competing, the team held its annual Swim-a-thon. The Swim-a-thon is a fundraiser where each swimmer gets sponsors per lap, or a one time donation. This year the money raised will be used to buy a new starter system for hosting our home meets. A portion of the earnings went to the Hospitality House here in Boone. Various team socials were held throughout the semester and we concluded the year with a banquet at BO’s in Hickory.

The new officer group for the swim club next year has many goals and aspirations. The swim club has a completely new officer group for next year, they are: Rita Welder (President) Kristian Hellem (Vice President), Kevin Atkinson (Treasurer),

One aspect the new officer group would like to work on is fundraising. We typically have one fundraiser a year, but the new group would like to

add a couple more during the year. If the swim club can raise even more money the team would like to purchase new training equipment, competition equipment for the pool, compensate more for gas with the higher gas prices, and to allow the team to participate in more events over the year together. It has been a great year for the swim club and I would like to thank our seniors for sticking out four years with the team, and I wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors (Amanda Gray, Sara Kilmer and J.R Dionne). I would also like to thank all the current officers for their hard work this year! Congratulations Appalachian State Swimming on winning “Team of the Year!”

The Men’s Ultimate team has had its most successful year ever. We raised our level play to that of being one of the best teams in the state. We won a total of 5 tournaments this year, with four of them being in a row. We also beat teams this year that two years ago we did not think was possible. The year came to a heartbreaking end however with a disappointing showing at the Sectionals tournament in late April. Even though we did not preform as well as we wanted to at the end of the year, it is hard to ignore the successes that we did have. We have voted in new officers for next year. Our new president is Justin Allen, Vice President will be Michael Neve, Treasurer is Shane Fluet, and Jeff Nordgren will be the Secretary. The expectations next will be the same as this year. As a team we know we have the talent and skill so there is no excuse for us to not be just as good or even better than we were this year.

“Overall, this has been a fun-filled year full of ultimate”

Both the fall and spring seasons of ultimate frisbee have been both successful and enjoyable for the Nonads this year. In the 2011 spring season, the team fell one game short for a bid to regionals. The top priority for the Nonads this year was to be the first ASU Ultimate Team to make it to regionals. As it turns out, all of our hard work this year paid off when the team finished 5th at the Carolina sectionals, beating NC State, Duke, South Carolina, and College of Charleston. The team is more than excited to have accomplished our number one goal for the year and is looking forward to competing against the rest of the East Coast for regionals. Although the officers of this year have done a tremendous job, the team looks to new leadership in the coming year. Terran Tout will take over as Captain, Hannah Teagle will take over as Vice President, Kasey Telfer will remain the Secretary, and Jessie Harrleston will remain the Treasurer. We look forward to another season of Ultimate with our new officers. The team has three main goals for next year. The first is recruitment of more players. This year we had an amazing rookie class that came in and was able to learn the game and become critical players on the team. It is important that we keep building a strong team in the coming years so there

will be strong players to replace the leaving seniors. Our second goal is to host a spring Thawout tournament that is as successful as the fall Blueridge Blowout tournament. Our third

goal is to continue the success of this year’s team and make it to Regionals again. Some major events that happened this year

include winning the Devil’s Disk Tournament in the Fall of 2011, beating NC State and Clemson for the first time, and scoring multiple points against nationally ranked teams. We also hosted the 11th annual Blueridge Blowout, having teams come from North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. Overall, this has been a fun-filled year full of Ultimate, and we could not have done it without our seniors. Stephanie Soule, Sarah Worley, Katie Mills, and Beth Cherveny, you will all be missed!

Women’s Volleyball As usual, Women’s Volleyball had a great turn out in September when team placements were held. We were able to make three strong teams. At times, having so many teams is a bit difficult, however the positives fully outweigh the negatives. It is great to be able to represent Appalachian with three different teams. Other schools are unsure of how we do it, and at times I am too, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. Our first semester was a great success in hosting our 4th annual Ta-Ta Tournament raising money for Breast Cancer Awareness. We were able to raise $1500 for the foundation and had a blast doing it. This tournament is something that other teams really look forward to and I hope it continues on for many years to come. Our tournament in the Spring, Madness on the Mountain, was also a success and we hope that continues for a while also. Something we pride ourselves on is that we have a great location to host tournaments. We have heard from many school that they love coming up the mountain to play and that we have great

facilities to play in. This really means a lot and is great that we can put out name on the map as a great place to come play. To finish out the year our National Team went to Kansas City Missouri to play in the National Tournament. The weekend started off great with going undefeated the first day of play. This put them in the gold bracket for the next two days, which is a great honor. The second few days were a bit shaky, however we ended up finishing 12th out of 120 in the gold bracket, which is great and we are really proud of. I am very proud of this organization and of Club Sports as a whole. I am graduating this May and playing club volleyball and being president has taught me so much that I will take on with me for years to come.
