FROM THE PASTOR: Scriptural Notes and Reflections

The first reading from the Book of Acts describes the selection of the first deacons to assist in caring for the needs of the early Church as she added more members. The apostles realized that they were not able to devote themselves to prayer and the ministry of the word as the Lord had directed them.

The shelter-in-place protocols not withstanding, take note of your immediate family, relatives, and neighbors. Who among them would benefit in body and/or soul from your loving service?

What does God think of you? That is a loaded question; or is it? Sit with this verse from the First Letter of Peter, “You are a ‘chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of His own…’”

The Gospel of John offers words most appropriate for these days of COVID-19 anxiety: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith in Me.” And, “Whoever believes in Me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these…”

Mother’s Day Prayer

Loving God, as a mother gives life and nourishment to her children, so you watch over your Church. Bless these women, that they may be strengthened as Christian mothers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor them always with a spirit of profound respect. Grant this through Christ our

Lord. Amen. USCCB Book of Blessings, The Liturgical Press, 1989.

Additional Intercessions:

For mothers who have lost a child through death, that their faith may give them hope, and their family and friends support and console them, we pray to the Lord.

R. Through the intercession of Your Mother, Hear Our

Prayer.

For mothers who have died, that God may bring them

into the joy of his kingdom, we pray to the Lord.

R. Through the intercession of Your Mother, Hear Our

Prayer.

Diocesan Lenten Appeal Report

Congratulations, St. Agnes, we have made our diocesan goal of $101,252. To date we have received 377 pledges and one-time gifts for a total of $104,307. At this point, all further contributions are returned to the parish. We will dedicate them toward the replacement of the Air Conditioning/Heating and Ventilations units on the social hall roof.

Thank you so much for your generosity. There is still time to make your gift, if your financial situation permits. Just go to the

website dioceseofgreensburg.org to give online or send your DLA card and money to the parish office.

Thank You For Supporting

Your Parish, As Well

Many of you have continued to support the parish with your offertory. Your generosity has “warmed the cockles of my heart.” That is an English expression which means, “Makes me very glad.” I also have noticed that an increasing number of you have chosen to use our online giving option.

I encourage others to consider doing the same. You simply go to stagneschurch.info and click on icon that looks like the one above at the top of the home page and follow the easy instructions to register.

COVID-19 Humor For Us Exiles

God said, “Take heart, O My people.” Isaiah prophesied to God’s people suffering in exile far from home:

“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”

Isaiah 43:19

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER “I am the way and the truth and the life.

MAY 10, 2020 No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6

T H O U G H T S O N G I V I N G :

“The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.” (1 Peter 2:7)

Every person has been given gifts from the Holy Spirit. These are called “charisms” and they are used to build God’s kingdom on earth. While many people are able to recognize their natural talents and abilities, they may be unsure of their charisms. If you know someone who is struggling for a direction in life, give them a little encouragement. Help them discern their charisms and how God is calling them to use them. Remember - no gift is too small or insignificant in God’s salvation plan.

WHAT IS A SPIRITUAL COMMUNION ? This is a long-standing practice of our Catholic faith. St. Teresa of Jesus wrote: “When you do not receive Communion and you do not attend Mass, you can make a spiritual communion, which is a

most beneficial practice; by it the love of God will be greatly impressed on you.” [The Way of Perfection, Ch. 35.] A Spiritual Communion can be offered by anyone who desires a deeper union with Christ and is unable to attend Mass and receive the Eucharist. There are many reasons why one may not be able to receive Holy Communion. It may be due to the fact that one is not Catholic; those who have been away from the Church for a long time and have not yet made a good confession; those who are living in a state of serious sin; and also for those who are sick or homebound. This form of prayer is most appropriate in the current situation when members of the faithful are unable to attend Mass. It is good practice to pray the Lord’s Prayer in preparation for Spiritual Communion.

WHAT MUST I DO TO MAKE A SPIRITUAL COMMUNION The key in making a spiritual communion is to express to the Lord our faith in His merciful love and his real presence in the Eucharist. Remember, you are making a spiritual communion because you are unable to receive the Eucharist at Mass. The following prayer service can be used to make a spiritual communion. Here are four easy steps to guide you:

1. Make an act of faith – Express to Jesus your faith in His real presence in the Eucharist.

2. Make an act of love – Offer a prayer of love and gratitude to the Lord.

3. Express your desire to receive Him – Because you are not able to physically receive Jesus, express to Him your desire to receive Him in your heart.

4. Invite Jesus to come into your heart – Ask Jesus to come to you as He would if we were able to receive the sacrament of Holy Communion.

ANGEL

CORNER

INSPIRATION - Let my prayer rise up like incense before YOU, my Lord! Psalm 141:2 Did you know? The act of "Lighting a Candle" has deep roots in the Catholic Faith. When you go into St. Agnes Church, you now see the beautiful "Divine Mercy" Chapel with it's candle stands. These candles may be lit by anyone to demonstrate the intention of a person's prayer. The continually burning flame symbolizes the ongoing nature of the prayer even after the person who lit the candle has left the church. Candles may be lit for any reason; sickness, anxiety, death of a loved one, need for

employment OR any other intention you've for which you have been praying. We ask for a $3.00 donation simply to offset the cost of the pillar candles. Day and night our prayer rises like incense before the Lord! Would you like to "Light a Candle"? Here's HOW: MAIL a check payable to: St. Agnes Church (11400 St. Agnes Lane, N. Huntingdon, PA 15642), OR drop off a check/cash to the St. Agnes Church Office (Monday - Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.) and slide it under the Office door. ***Candles burn for 7 days so feel free to "Relight a Candle" or offer new prayer intentions as often as you wish! If you have any questions, call the parish office at 724-863-2626.

PARISH COMMUNITY OUTREACH

“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you

clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.” Matthew 25: 35-40

As we all are being vigilant in protecting ourselves and our families from contracting, and potentially spreading the Coronavirus to others, we must be mindful of those who are most vulnerable to serious health risks if exposed, and those who will suffer economically during this extremely difficult time. Our parishes are working to be responsive to these needs, as our faith calls us to be proactive and serve those in need with compassion and love. As a faith community, one way that we can help is by purchasing gift cards for those in need. An easy way to purchase a gift card, without having to go to the store, is to purchase give cards through Queen of Angels Catholic School’s Scrip Program. If you would like to donate towards the purchase of gift card for the need, please complete these three easy steps.

1. Fill out the form below. 2. Include a check made payable to Queen of Angels Catholic School. 3. Return/mail both items to a parish office (Immaculate Conception, St. Agnes, or St. Elizabeth Ann Seton)

No going to the store required!!! Queen of Angels Catholic School will fill the gift card orders that were purchased and return the gift cards to the parishes. The parishes will then distribute the gift cards to St. Vincent DePaul for families in need in our area. THANK YOU for your support. If you have any questions, please call St. Agnes Parish Office at 724-863-2626.
