Congratulations to all the graduates this month! What an exciting time for you as you finish up so many years of study and work and prepare to begin your career. This will be a time in your life that you will always remem-ber and cherish. You are getting to enjoy a brief period where you can exhale and appreciate your hard work and dedication to your goals.

Take a couple months before you start your career and enjoy your lack of re-sponsibility for the moment. Enjoy some relaxing time for yourself or spend some quality time with your closest friends, and there is no better time than now to take that sky diving trip you’ve been dreaming about, or spend a few weeks in Europe. Make sure that you really take it all in as this awesome transitional phase between college and work will fly by so fast.

Great Job and good luck!

“It’s really hard to maintain a one-on-one relationship if the other person is not going to allow me to be with other people.” Axl Rose “Instead of getting married again, I’m going to find a woman I don’t like and just give her a house.” Rod Stewart8

Ergonomic Beach ChairThere has never been a chair quite as comfortable as this one. This chair is specially de-signed to relieve pain on sensi-tive spots of the back and neck. Lying on your stomach doesn’t have to be a pain either. A hole in the headrest helps keep your back straight and relaxed. This is the ultimate when it comes to beach chairs. $159.95

Floating Wireless SpeakerThe floating wireless speak-er created by Hammacher Schlemmer sounds too good to be true. Finally, you can lis-ten to your favorite songs and hear them above the sounds of splashing. This gadget holds a 5-watt speaker in a rubber, waterproof case that receives music signals from a source up to 150 feet away. Although the speaker uses up a lot of bat-teries, it is fun to have on trips to the pool or beach.Price: $179.99

Inflatable MouseThe Jelly Click brings a completely different touch to an everyday object. This mouse is controlled by a single-strip of circuitry that can withstand some bending and bruising. Deflate and inflate the mouse to take it with you anywhere. I suppose you could accidentally pop it, but its rugged material suggests it will last a while. Besides its interesting appearance, the Jelly Click could be a more comfortable design for students and adults alike. This gadget is still in its concept phase, but if it hits the stores, it will probably be affordable.

AC to USB Power AdapterFinally, you can charge your USB devices away from a computer. Each adapter comes with five USB ports to re-charge whatever you need. These adapters also come with different plugs to suit the outlets in different countries, making them useful for business travel or vaca-tions overseas. Price: $22

The CloudEven though this gadget is still just a concept, it is interesting to see just where technology can take us in the not-so-distant future. The Cloud by Koo Touch is a sofa suspended by magnetic force. Smaller scale versions of this idea can be found on office desks across the world, but The Cloud gives magnets a bigger future.

“[I hope] my child will be a good Catholic like me.” Madonna

The joys of traveling are priceless. Escaping from your routine, broaden-ing your horizons, visiting an exotic place, sharing unique experiences with family and friends, enriching your memory bank or simply grab-bing the chance to rest are many of the jewels in the crown of traveling.

However, going on vacation doesn’t mean taking a break from style! In fact, it can further enrich your expe-rience. You never know whom you might run into at the airport or on the plane. Your chance encounter could be an important business contact or even the love of your life—you never

really know.

The key to traveling in comfort and style is to wear layers. It always seems to be stuffy in the airport and cold on the plane. Also, remember

to bring clothes that you can mix and match. My personal preference is two to three sol-id colors and a multi-colored scarf to tie it all together.

MAYCOLLEGECROWDb.indd 10 4/27/09 8:54:36 PM

Page 11: May 09 College Crowd Magazine

On the plane, I like to wear a cotton jersey top. Another per-sonal favorite is a layer of two cotton tank tops with a thin cashmere cardigan.

To this, I add a pair of comfortable jeans or

leggings and a big silk scarf around my neck. A pair of big sun-glasses can come in handy during the flight, and they work as a mask if rest is needed, indicating a “do not disturb” sign to your talkative neighbor.

When it comes to luggage, go for streamline. Opt for suitcases that are effortlessly mobile. Don’t over-stuff your bags! Otherwise, clothes and shoes end up badly creased and wrinkled. Do your best to take only one suitcase. Remember the phrase: “On the go.”

Here are a few ways to pack your items more efficiently:

1.Start with shoes on the bottom. To protect the shape of the shoes, stuff them with socks, tank tops or something else soft that you are taking with you.2.Fold your jeans in half and layer them.3.Incorporate the remaining items with as few folds as possible- especially pants, dresses and sweaters.4.On top, place the most fragile items, such as anything beaded or sequined. For the best protection, turn these items inside-out.

5. I also like to place each category of clothing in separate bags (plastic or dust bags).

This is my small list of things that are essential to have on the plane:

1. A small mirror and a bag of cosmetic basics such as lip gloss and mascara to apply before landing2. An oversized pocketbook for a passport and plane tickets3. Digital camera4. Mints/gum5. Toothbrush and toothpaste6. A book or magazine7. A favorite scent to apply prior to landing 8. Anti-bacterial wipes and tis-sues

Upon arrival, unpack your bags as soon as possible. This gives clothes and shoes a chance to air out and regain their shape. In your hotel, organize your clothes by taking advantage of the drawers and hangers in the closet. Also, many hotels have an iron and small ironing board you can use if your packing skills are less than ideal. Most of all, remember to have fun with what you wear. No matter if the purpose of your trip is for a business meeting or a va-cation to Tahiti, like a signature, your style is still up to you!

The spring semester is ending and you know what that means-summer is here! Summer is a great time to refocus on your fitness habits. What better time than when you are in a swimsuit hitting the lake or the ocean? It is ironic that most New Year’s resolution fitness buffs have already faded out of the gym. They hit it hard until spring break, and then, right when they need it the most, they quit. Let’s use the summer as a way to reveal your new body next school year. Think of it as an unveiling. Here are some helpful tips to get you there:

• Cut the sugar out of your diet: Sugar is the fastest way to pack weight on the middle. If you drink a 400-calorie large soda every day this summer, then you will add approximately 36,000 calories to your diet. Imagine what would happen if you simply cut that much out of your diet. • Cut the fast food out: Fried foods are bad for your heart. There are nine calories per gram of fat. That is compared to four calories for a gram of protein or carbohydrates. That is why they say that fat is calorie-dense. Sugar and fat are usually synony-mous with fast food. You bathe that body with sugar from a soft drink right after you eat a greasy cheeseburger. That cheeseburger might have 60 grams of fat, which is 540 calories just from the fat! Not good.

• Start a cardiovascular program: You don’t need a gym. Go on a brisk walk or a jog. Start riding your bike in the neighbor-hood. I think it is important to mix it up and alternate between different forms of cardiovascular training. Try starting with a minimum of three days a week for 30 minutes each day. If weight loss is your goal, then you should push for 5-6 days per week and gradually increase your time as well. Once you get the weight

off, then you can go back to 3-4 days of 30 minutes to maintain the weight loss.

• Start a weight training program: There are so many different ways and levels of weight training. The number one recommendation is to get a professional’s help. Your best buddy at the gym might or might not be the answer. Everyone has individual needs, which is why they call it “personal” training.

Have a great summer!!

Aries (March 21- April 19)Your passion could get the better of your with Mars and Venus activating your Sun sign this month. Impulse excitement and something a little different is what will motivate you in your search for love. Be careful that you don’t allow blinkered vision to lead you up the garden path, particularly between the 5th and 10th.

Taurus (April 20- May 20)It’s a fun filled month during May however you may overdo it so try to be more frugal with your eating and dietary habits but also the hours that you keep. You’re likely to feel energized between the 3rd and the 5th but by the 15th could feel rather run down or perhaps even exhausted. This is a time to honor your body’s needs and to look after your health.

Gemini (May 21- May 20)You are about to complete a new financial cycle which offers you the opportunity to spread your wings and fly in a direction that will give you more career fulfillment. A wonderful opportunity to move into a coveted position may occur after the 17th. Be prepared to make some quick changes at this time.

Cancer (June 21- July 22)Even if an idea seems feasible this month beware of the fraudster Cancer. You may be gullible possibly because you’re feeling a little vulnerable in your personal life just now. You feel intense and manipu-lated in your relationships and this requires you to be stronger by putting your foot down. Redirect some of those negative energies into your work and you can produce something of value. By the 25th you should feel the fog lifting.

Leo (July 23-August 23)You mustn’t feel negative about opportunities that present themselves now even if you’re not clear on the bigger picture. You have to trust the process and go with your heart. Between the 17th and 22nd changes in your domestic sphere may also be spotlighted, however don’t spread yourself too thin. If you do, you’ll do neither i.e. your work nor the move, well.

Virgo (August 24 - September 22)If you’re having some ongoing disputes over money or possessions you only have yourself to blame Virgo. You need to understand that to independent-ly manage your wealth you need to take control of it. If you’ve been lazy and given it over to someone else to manage that is your dilemma just now. It is never too late to reclaim your power and this is the month to do it.

Libra (September 24- October 22)Don’t seek any reward for the help you offer someone this month or you’ll be bitterly disap-pointed. Your compassionate gestures should be selfless; otherwise you’ll feel as if you’ve been help-ing someone to no avail. Furthermore your help may actually fall on deaf ears anyhow. Just because

you feel you have the solution to someone’s woes doesn’t mean they will act on it. Between the 4th and 7th you could be drawn into someone else’s complex personal issues.

Scorpio (October 23 - November 21)Unexpected changes in your work routine, espe-cially if they are dictated by someone who is not so friendly to you, could create hostility. You need to be on your best behavior even if the chips don’t fall where you would like them to. Many Scorpios will feel that a rest is in order so don’t feel guilty about taking time out and being a little lazy. You deserve it.

Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21)An abrupt change in your home circumstances will be a little troubling at first but will afford you a pleasant development in your life’s circumstances. You should embrace these changes wholeheart-edly and see where they lead you. A female may instigate some of these changes around the 14th so keep an open mind and don’t retaliate until you hear the full story.

Capricorn (December 22 - January 19)Making changes in your personal life will take longer than you expect so this could be a little frustrating. There could be obstructions or people questioning your motives. If you trust your own decisions you needn’t pay too much attention to those who would otherwise spoil your effective strategy. But having said that, you’ll have to be prepared to take on some additional responsibili-ties as others back away. You’ve never been scared of hard work so why would this bother you?

Aquarius (January 20 - February 18)You can finally discharge a debt and breathe a sigh of relief this month. The first week of the month is important in effectively re-evaluating your financial strategies. If you’ve been diligent in analyzing your accounts you might point the finger at someone when you discover an error. Don’t be premature as this is simply an oversight on your part and could cause you an embarrassment later when you discover the truth.

Pisces (February 19 - March 20)You have some unexplainable desires which you feel compelled to fulfill this month. This is akin to a passionate flame springing forth from the depths of your being and you’ll be forced to follow this impulse in spite of yourself. This will be a very satisfying experience given the position of Saturn and the inhibitions it has been causing on your love life for some time now. Create some new friendships between the 3rd and 6th even if you don’t feel particularly up to it. You’ll be satisfied at making the extra effort.

How many local pageants did you compete in before going to

Miss Oklahoma?

“I competed 12 times over three years before I finally won the title of Miss Keystone Lake. There were 42

local pageants held last year that would qualify you to compete, and I won the 41st! It was a very long, frustrat-ing, Three years of competing, but it paid off because I finally got to compete at state level. I walked away with the crown of Miss Oklahoma on my first try.” What has been your favorite part of being Miss Oklahoma 2008?

“Well, that would have to be a tie between speaking in schools and wearing the clothing of our sponsors! The job of Miss Oklahoma primarily consists of giving school assem-blies. I will do between one and five a day. It’s hard work, but it’s the most rewarding part of the job!”

MAYCOLLEGECROWDb.indd 16 4/27/09 8:54:57 PM

Page 17: May 09 College Crowd Magazine

Tell me a little about your platform:

“My personal platform revolves around the adoption laws in Okla-homa. In Oklahoma, we have closed-record laws, which means that anyone who is adopted has no access to their medical records or their personal heritage. My goal is, foremost, to change our laws. In the meantime, I want to make the steps to filing a court order easier. It’s a somewhat complicated process if you don’t know where to start! I believe everyone deserves to know about their past and use it to make a better future.”

What was your favorite part of the competition?

“My favorite phase of competition will always be talent. It’s my one chance to show the judges that I’ve dedi-cated my life to an art form.” What was your talent at Miss America?

“I did a lyrical dance to “Every Moment.” It’s a powerful song about making the most of every second because the days slip through our fingertips.”

What are the dates for this year’s pageant…. And where is the pageant

held?

“Miss Oklahoma is June 2-6 and is taking place at the Mabee Center in Tulsa. Ev-

eryone should make it a point to go. The talent is incredible, and I prom-

ise you won’t be disappointed.”

Do you have any ad-vice for the next Miss Oklahoma? “Every Miss Oklahoma should know to leave at least one hour earlier than it takes to arrive at her destination, because everything that can go wrong usually does. I would also tell her to take in ev-ery day and be thankful for each moment of her reign.”

As the tumultuous Oklahoma weather continues to falter each day, there is one season that consistency can be expected. As the summer heat rolls in, swimsuit season will be here before you know it.

Summer is a time for tanning, going on vacations and soaking up the sunshine. Along with the heat, comes the summer glow that keeps skin looking refreshed and vibrant. Even after the hot summer rays are gone, you can keep your skin radient with new-series and products.

Numerous lotions are be-ing created with hints of self-tanner, such as Jergens Natural Glow, which provides a healthy shade of color when applied daily and comes with skin-firming ingredients.

When those hot, sunny days aren’t around, you can always fake it. To prevent the streaky look of a self-tanning lotion, mix the self-tanner with a basic lotion before you apply it. Then, apply a regular lotion to areas where blotchiness could occur such as knees, elbows and hands. L’OREAL Sublime Bronze is excellent for an instant golden look.

Rotating between those two items everyday will leave you sun-kissed—no sun required.

Abbey Morgan, corporate office for the Riviera Tanning Salon, said many people come in year-round to tan.

“More girls are being drawn to spray tanning lately, I am sure because of health concerns and immediate results,” Morgan said.

The spray tan machine sprays you based on your height and weight, not your skin color. You step in and let the machine do its job. Then, wait 4-6 hours before showering and you’re tan for up to two weeks—no Mexico getaway or countless hours in the sun needed.

“A ‘cocktail’ is also a popular choice for young women,” Morgan said. “It is a combination of a tanning bed and the spray tan. They will tan daily or every other day, and also get a spray once a week,” Morgan said.

The face is also a crucial element to radiating skin. Bronzers can be used year-round, just go subtler during the colder months and increase blush. Bronzer combined with shimmer powder will become your new best friend.

After taking these guidance tips, be prepared to let others envy your summer glow, even before summer comes to Oklahoma and the swimsuit awakens from hibernation.

In case the basketball gods do not shine on OKC with favor, the Thunder still have several

backup plans for draft day:

C Hasheem Thabeet, UConn – Krstic and Collison are doing a fine job inside for the Thunder, but what they really need is an intimidating defensive presence. At 7-3, Thabeet would immediately provide

the shot blocking and defense in the paint the current roster is lacking.

G James Harden, Arizona State – Harden is the definition of a natural scorer, averag-ing more than 20 points per game for the Sun Devils. However, OKC appears to have plenty of scoring in its big three, with players such as Kyle Weaver and Thabo Sefolosha as nice defensive compliments at the shooting guard position.

F Jordan Hill, Arizona – Hill’s stock soared over the course of the season, as the big

man was unstoppable at times for the Wildcats. The question for the Thunder

is whether they really need another power forward with Jeff Green and Nick Collison already splitting time.

PG Brandon Jennings, Lottomat-ica Roma (Italy) – Oklahoma City would be making a huge decision if it took Jennings in the draft – the decision to move rookie sensation Russell Westbrook from the point guard spot. Jennings, who opted for a year of international ball in-stead of a year of college, would likely not want to be a backup point guard for several years.

G Demar DeRozan, USC – DeRo-zan was unimpressive through-out much of his freshman year at USC but really turned it on in the end. He has tremen-dous athleticism and showed NBA scouts why he will have all-star potential at the next level, even if it takes a while to develop.

DJ Jacob Jones became inspired by artists such as The Prodigy, Afrika Bombaata, Beastie Boys, Chemi-

cal brothers, Herbie Hancock, Josh Wink and other electronic and hip-hop pioneers. Jones said elec-

tronic music is a means to express raw emotion through beats, breaks and bass.

Jones moved to OKC in 1998. He became involved with NeedleGruv Records as a

promoter for its club events. He sub-mersed himself in the club scene.

In 2001, NeedleGruv Records signed him as an artist. In the past 10 years, Jones has achieved a dedicated following in the OKC metro.

In 2006, he and DJ Fosterchild became the chief operators of NeedleGruv and opened AMP, an after-hours club in midtown that showcased OKC’s top DJ talents.

“I have seen trends

come and go in

OKC,” said

Jones.

“My ad-vice to any

young DJ trying to make it is to be true to yourself; but most of

all, be true to the music that you love. Also, your only as big as your dreams; don’t be

afraid to chase them.”

Marcus—“At the age of 13, me and my friends were looking at porn in the attic. We would each take turns going up one at a time, and someone gets the bright idea to lock my best friend in the attic where there’s no light.

He starts freakin’ out and banging on the door. I was trying to help,

but couldn’t get the lock to open. Sud-denly, I hear a big crash like something broke, and my friend’s legs are hanging out of the ceiling. Needless to say, we got caught with the porn.”

Andrea—“My boyfriend and I had been dating for five months, and it was my birthday. I had never been to his house before, but his mom insisted I go over there on my birthday. Little did I know, they bought me a cake. After I sat down, they lit the candles and his sister brought the cake to me. I took it from her, made a wish and blew out the can-dles. Then, in a split second, it slipped from my hands. I dropped my cake with white icing on their brown carpet.”

Sarah—“Last year, I was dating a guy who recently moved to Texas to live with his mom for the summer. He asked me to come visit him, but when I was halfway to Texas, he called to say that I wouldn’t be able to stay the night and it might be better to come another week-end. Because I was already so far into my trip, I told him that I would spend the day with him and go home that night. He kept getting text messages when I was with him, but he continued to ignore them. I didn’t think anything of it, but I thought he was acting a little awkward. After going out for dinner, cu-riosity got the best of me. I looked at his phone. Come to find out, he had an-other girl—a girl I knew well from high school—staying with him at his house. I left Texas as soon as I could get to my car and I haven’t seen or talked to him since then. “

Graduation is upon us. It is time to bid adieu’ to the alma mater to which students dedicated the past few years. For some graduates, it is a frightening time. Last March, the National Association of Colleges and Employers completed a survey of its members, revealing that companies plan to hire 22 percent fewer graduates in 2009.

Thousands of graduating seniors across the state have already begun their job searches. For those who face the dreadful task of finding a job, where will they go?

There is always the option of returning to graduate school, but this adds to the already burdensome student loan debt. What will these students do?

Student loan repayment begins six months after the date of graduation. Some may wind up taking

jobs in areas in which they are over qualified, such as the fast food industry or in retail, just in

order to pay back student loans.

Among those taking the walk May 9 is OSU student Dee Harlow, who will

graduate with a bachelor of univer-sity studies degree in hotel and

restaurant management.

Harlow started looking for work back in December. Most of the responses she receives are

only to tell her that the position is already filled, or that due to cut-backs, the company is not hiring.

“I have had to go back to my network of potential job employers, and

I may have someone who will be able to put me to work at a lodge in the Tulsa area,” Harlow

said. Harlow is not the only graduate feeling the strain. “I have several friends who are in the same boat with me,” she said.

Making the job search twice as hard, graduates will not

only compete with other graduates, but they will also compete with those who have been laid off.

In today’s job market, employers face tougher hiring decisions. Employers may need to choose one employee from a group of 50 or more applicants.

Professional resumes and excellent interviewing skills are key to separating the best candidates from the pack.

To the graduates of the spring of 2009, I hope that the years invested in your future, in seeking that elusive brass ring, have not been in vain.
