Poison Cues presents the Pro Pool Charity Challenge in Austin, TX. Professional players will team up for a night of challenge matches to raise money for the American Diabetes Association. The challenge will begin at 7:00pm on Monday, February 16th at G-Cue Billiards in Austin, TX. The event will feature two WPBA pros, Sarah Rousey and Heather Pulford, as well as Shane VanBoening and James Davis, Sr., both of which are former Texas Open 9-ball Champions. Rousey, a resident of Bloomington, IL, had a recent top 3 finish at the WPBA Tour Championships in Florida. She finished the 2008 season ranked 12th on the WPBA points list. Her opponent, Heather Pul-ford, also a regular on the WPBA tour, will be competing for her hometown crowd as G-Cue Billiards is her home poolhall. VanBoening and James Davis, Sr. have played against each other several times over the past year at various tournaments around Texas, beginning with the Texas Open where VanBoening eventually captured the title. Spectators will get to see a re-match of the Houston Open finals where Davis defeated VanBoening. Proceeds raised will benefit the American Diabetes Association, a charity that is of special importance to Sarah Rousey. At the age of 10, Sarah was diagnosed with Type I diabetes. “Having something wrong with you at a young age really scares other kids. I got to be the butt of the joke or people thought they could catch Diabetes by being around me. All of this fueled me to play pool” Sarah said. “When I was 20, I had a serious low blood sugar scare which landed me in the hospital. I decided it was time to get an insulin pump. When I made this decision I told myself it was time to be an advocate and not be ashamed. I started educating people rather than hiding. It’s amazing how understanding people can be when you just let them in.” A special thanks to Poison Cues for their support and contribution of cues and products to be raffled at the event. Broumpton Ultimate KF Cue Tour Open Winner Ultimate Billiards in Ft Pierce, FL hosted their first ever KF event and another record-breaking field turned out. The $1,700 added event attracted 112 entrants over the 2 days. The $1000 added Open event kicked off with 47 players, and Rich-ard Broumpton doing all the damage. Broumpton went through to the finals undefeated with wins over Johnny Reaves 7-5, Javier Chirino 7-2, Cal Mcgann 7-3, Doug Johnson 7-3, and Curtis Kelley 7-3, putting him up against Eddie Cabrea for the hot seat match. Cabrea was also having a break-out event, beating several of the top players in the field, including wins over Han Berber 7-5, Gail Grecar 7-1, and Bill Dunsmore to put him up against Broumpton for the hotseat match.

Broumpton--1st Place

This match proved to be a tight affair, with Broump-ton edging a 7-4 win to take the hotseat. He would now wait the winner of the one loss side where Josh Lewis was a man on a mission. Lewis had lost his first round match to Prescott Buckwold 7-4, then went on to record 9 very impressive wins beating the likes of Han Berber 7-6, Mike Deste-fano 7-3, Doug Johnson 7-3, Tony Crosby 7-4, Bill Dunsmore 7-5, Curtis Kelley 7-6 and Eddie Cabrea to put himself in the final, leaving Eddie Cabrea with a fine 3rd place finish.

The Finals was all Broumpton. Broumpton had re-cently switched to the new line of Concept Cues, which tour director Tony Crosby and billiard pro Corey Deuel have been developing, It proved to be the right Concept for Broumpton, as he dominated a one sided final besting Lewis 9-2 in the single race final and take his first KF Cue Tour win with the $800 winners purse.

The Blatt Billiards Predator 9-Ball Tour opened up the 2009 season at Raxx Pool Room in West Hempstead, NY with 70 players vying for the top prize. Top players in attendance included Jeremy Sossei, Oscar Bonilla, Ignacio Chavez, Fran Crimi, Empire State Champion Marc “Spain” Vidal, Liz Ford, Sean “Alaska” Morgan, Bobby Blackmore & Tony Robles.

Day one had its share of surprising matches and stand out players. Tour owner Tony Robles start-ed out strong with wins over Thomas Wan 8-4 & Marc Vidal 8-3 but ran into trouble against Jeremy Sossei, losing 8-5. Robles fought back through the one-loss side until he ran into Oscar Bonilla, losing 9-7 and finishing 7th/8th.

Chavez Dominates Predator TourLiz Ford started the Predator tour season in winning fashion. Liz won highest finishing female, easily finishing 3 rounds higher than any of the other ten females in the event. But this wasn’t enough for the WPBA pro as she fought hard at the end of day one defeating Pete Tascarella Sr. 7-4 to return for day two action to play Pete Tascarella Jr., the son in the family of cue makers. Pete Jr. couldn’t tame Miss Ford either and lost to her 9-6. Liz continued to play strong against Jeremy Sossei keeping it close in the beginning, but Jeremy took control of the match at 3-3 and never looked back. Ford lost 9-4 to Sossei, finishing 9th–12th.

Other standout players included John Alicea, who continues to push and test many of the tours top players. On day one, John scored big wins over Victor Nau 8-4 and Jeremy Sossei 9-5.

Page 19: MAXIM Billiards Magazine - Feb / March 2009

Day two saw John struggle and lose to Mhet Ver-gara 9-2 and Oscar Bonilla 9-5 leaving Alicea to settle for 5th/6th. Our other 5th/6th finisher was Jerry Tarantola who came out swinging on day one. With his monster break on his side, Tarantola easily defeated Jonathan Trager 8-0, Caroline Pao 8-3, and Pete Tascarella Jr. 8-2. Tarantola looked good playing Bobby Blackmore on day two with a 9-7 win but hit a wall name Ignacio Chavez, los-ing 9-2. Tarantola seemed to lose his steam and became another Sossei victim finishing with a 9-5 loss.

Mhet Vergara had his best Predator 9-Ball tour-nament ever staying undefeated on day one with wins over “the other” Allison Fischer, Andrew Kane, Chris Laz, and Lionel Rivera . On day two, Vergara continued to have success with a close call against Holden Chin winning 9-8 & John Alicea 9-2. Vergara then took on Ignacio Chavez for the hot seat. Ignacio played incredible pool this tour-nament with convincing wins over Dave Danchak 8-3, Steve Wright 8-5, Sean “Alaska” Morgan 8-5, Mike Fingers 9-2, & Jerry Tarantola 9-2. In the hot seat match, Chavez was the clear winner defeating Vergara 9-4.

Oscar Bonilla had a long road to the final three. He started out strong defeating Justin Muller 8-4 and

Rob Omen 8-0, but lost to Holden Chin on the hill. On the one-loss side, Bonilla fought back defeatingThomas Wan 7-2, Lionel Rivera 9-5, Mike Fingers 9-2, Tony Robles 9-7, John Alicea 9-5 and made Jeremy Sossei settle for 4th place with a 9-5 win.

Semi-final action saw Bonilla and the recently de-feated Vergara battle for a chance at Chavez in the finals. Vergara appeared focused but tight during the match against Bonilla. Bonilla capitalized on the tension and defeated Vergara 9-4 for a chance at Chavez in the finals.

The final was all Chavez. The rested Chavez seemed calm and poised throughout the match and dominated Bonilla. The final race to 11 seemed one-sided as Chavez was beating Bonilla 9-4. Bo-nilla mounted a comeback closing the gap 10-7, but Chavez put an end to Bonilla’s run and finished the set winning the tournament with an 11-7 final score.

The tour also started an amateur event on Sundays for B-D players. Players that played in the Open event on Sat. got a lower entry fee in the event which includes bonus points for the player of the year standings. Of the 26 players, Romeo Singh and Jose Soto ended up in the finals. In the end, Soto took the 1st place prize, defeating Singh 7- 4.

Featured Products History - The Tip Pik™The Tip Pik™ was the first of its kind and is the original because of its classic enduring design. Sometime in the early 1990’s Mr. Billiards™ thought that the tip tapping tools commonly used in billiard rooms was antiquated and need-ed some refinement. When the new tool was in the design phase, Mr. Billiards™ recognized that it needed to be easy to use, conveniently carried in any pocket (eliminating the bulk) and affordable. He began with a tubular brass part, added phonograph needles to it and locked it into place with some special glue. He employed a R&D team and after extensive research and countless hours of troubleshooting, he created an initial prototype. A win-ner soon emerged utilizing 42 precisely placed pins well known for their perforating action. This was when the world famous Tip Pik™ was born. With only a few minor refinements, the Tip Pik™ remains pretty much as you see it today. Now with hundreds of thousands of Clas-sic Tip Pik’s in circulation throughout the world, the Tip Pik™ has become a must have pool cue accessory. Why - Using proper english has long been a fundamen-tal technique used in the sport of billiards. Proper use of the Tip Pik™ increases the tip’s ability to retain chalk thereby allowing the player to employ the proper eng-lish during a shot. Use of the Tip Pik™ tool is necessary to assist in the application and retention of chalk to the tip of a cue stick. There is no better tool for this purpose! That is why the Tip Pik™ is considered “the greatest tip tool on earth”. Although using the Tip Pik™ before each shot is not nec-

essary, every player should keep a Tip Pik™ handy when needed. Ask us or your local dealer about the Tip Pik™ Classic, the Classic Key Chain, the Shadow and the very popular Shadow Chalker about the advan-tages of each.

Today - The Tip Pik™ has become one of the most copied tip tools throughout the billiard industry, and although tried, copy cats have never been able to du-plicate the all-around quality, convenience, simplicity and affordability of the brass Classic Tip Pik™. Rela-tively few modifications have occurred throughout the years, and so the Tip Pik™ remains virtually the same as its original design. Nowhere can you find the solid durability of the brass Tip Pik™. The Tip Pik™ is 100% made in the U.S.A. and each one comes with a full life-time warranty. Ask any local billiards dealer about the “original” classic Tip Pik™.

They came from all over to play in this great event that has been going on for 25 years right here in Memphis, TN. New owner Jerry Ramey, and tourna-ment director Mark Dionne were very pleased when a full field of 128 players showed up on Friday.

The tournament got underway on Friday night right after the Calcutta and continued into the late hours on Sunday morning. Entry fee was $25, Race to 7, Ladies get 2 games, played on 9 foot Diamond tables.

The semi finals match was slow and dragging until rack 11, where Adam Wilson from Muscle Shoals, AL heated up the table with a strong run out, following a scratch on the break by Jerry Slivka from Pittsburgh, PA bringing the match to 6-5, Slivka leading. Wilson with a dry break in rack 12, left a clear contact to the one ball, but seeing a tough run out, Slivka plays a strong safe, leaving a table length kick from the short rail that Wilson couldn’t get out of. With ball in hand Slivka anticipates a slim one-nine combination and gets it, bringing the match to 7-5 for the win.

In the finals it was Justin Sanders from Jackson, Tn wins the toss and sinks 2 balls on the break but pins the cue ball behind the eight, with no easy shot on the one ball. Sanders jumps over the eight ball, con-tacting the one, nearly scoring in the corner pocket. Slivka returns for a strong run on the first rack, but struggled a bit on the second, giving Sanders a few swings back at the table, only to turn it back over for Slivka to win rack two and run rack three perfectly.

Sanders seemed to be coming back after winning rack 5 but found his seat again when he jumped the cue ball off the table on the break for rack 7, bringing Slivka back for yet another great out, bringing the score to 5-2, Slivka leading.

Slivka took rack 6 quickly with the 9 on the snap, but the luck didn’t carry as the cue ball found a pocket on rack 7, bringing Sanders back for a decent run, until he missed a tough table length shot to cut the 6 ball in corner pocket. When it was all over it was Jerry Slivka taking home the Super Bowl 2009 brag-ging rights and $1,500.00 in cash.

Payouts paid out 16 places and with the Calcutta paid out over $11,000. If you ever passing thru Memphis stop in at The Rack, you will like the action 24/7.

Playing billiards is an extremely popular pastime, both in America and abroad. Although the game has been with us for a very long time, there has been an incredible resurgence in interest surrounding the game in recent years. The pool halls of today are markedly dif-ferent from those of yesteryear, due mainly to the increasing popu-larity of the game.

Pool players today demand a different sort of pool hall. Gone are the days of smoky pool halls filled with shady characters and shifty crooks. The pool hall owners of today are making valiant efforts to meet the needs of their new found customers. The billiard aficio-nados of today have a higher set of expectations, and many pool hall owners have made great strides to get with the times. It is not uncommon to find a restaurant or a martini bar inside the modern pool hall.

Slate is one such example. After receiving a much-anticipated reno-vation back in 2000, it has become one of the hottest pool spots in New York City. With over 16,000 square feet of space on two floors, Slate is one of the most unique and exciting places in the city. It boasts a massive 54 foot glass bar, a full service restaurant, 30 championship pool tables, a stellar sound system, and a collec-tion of plasma TV’s placed throughout the venue. It also has an incredible glass staircase in the shape of a pool triangle. Believe the hype; Slate is the place to be and be seen.

The Continental Modern Pool Lounge is another fine establishment. It is located in Arlington, Virginia and is quite possibly the funkiest billiard room in America. This venue is the perfect combination of fun and sportsmanship. The décor speaks volumes about the type of establishment they are trying to operate. It is very much a 70’s inspired spot, reminiscent of The Jetsons or something to that ef-fect. This pool hall is, without a doubt, a flashback from way back.

There are three main things that separate a good pool hall from a great pool hall; respect for the game, quality equipment, and stylish décor. Shakespeare’s Pub and Billiard Room in Denver, Colorado is without a doubt, a great pool hall. They have an excellent menu, a fine selection of ale and lager, and some of the best equipment and players in America. It is not uncommon to discover some of the best and brightest players playing alongside relative beginners. Shakespeare’s is considered one of America’s top pool spots, even garnering a recent mention in USA Today. If you are ever in Denver, be sure to drop in for a game and a pint.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------About the Author: Nathaniel Jacobson is an avid pool player who is actively trying to master his game. Auburn’s Kimberlee Hole had a great time compet-ing for money and prizes on the set of ‘Wheel of Fortune.’

She won $8,750 for her efforts.

Once the large camera focused squarely on her pensive face, Kimberlee Hole had trouble coming up with a quick response under the bright, warm lights of the big stage. “I don’t known what happened,” Hole said of her experience as a contestant on the television game show hit, “Wheel of Fortune”.

“I just froze. That’s all I can say. ” For the 41-year-old Auburn woman, spinning the famous “Wheel” is more difficult than it appears on commercial TV. Hole, however, conquered her brief camera shy-ness, relaxed and eventually cashed in. She won two tossup rounds, solved the final puzzle and left the Culver City, Calif., studio with $8,750 (before taxes) – the most cash won among the three con-testants vying for top prizes on the show. Her 15 minutes of national game show fame were filmed back on Nov. 21. It aired for the first time this past Tuesday night on KOMO 4. Hole’s husband, Duane, and two sisters accompa-nied her to Southern California. They joined the live audience as Hole stepped on stage for the taping of the episode.

“I was ecstatic to see it on TV (for the first time),” said Hole, a mother of one son, Connor, 17, and a lifelong Auburn-Kent resident. “I enjoyed the expe-rience. It was a lot of fun.” Hole, a medical assistant by day, has fun with games in her leisure time.

She is pretty good with a cue stick, especially when it comes to serious 9-ball. While Hole is consid-ered an amateur, she has qualified to play against the pros on regional and national women’s billiard tours.

Hole, a Kent-Meridian High School graduate, is a longtime fan of the “Wheel of Fortune”. She made it to the show after surviving a long process of auditions. She entered her name on a card when the “Wheel Mobile” came to the nearby Emerald Queen Casino in Fife. Her name was drawn from a large, spinning wheel. She passed her early auditions, including one that involved about 130 other prospects in a regional tryout at Seattle. The judges liked her stage presence and delivery. She ultimately got the final call to appear in Culver City. Filming took all day, Hole said, but it was an inter-esting and worthwhile process between brushes of makeup from the stage crew and timed applause from the audience. About the only thing that caught Hole by surprise was the tiny Vanna White, the game show’s letter-turning assistant, who took time to greet each con-testant before the filming.“She was a bean pole, paper thin,” Hole said. “I couldn’t believe how skinny she was. ”“But Vanna was great, a sweetheart. Everybody was great, and (host) Pat (Sajak) was funny. ” Hole wasn’t disappointed she didn’t win an exclu-sive trip to Europe or Canada, as her competitors did. She just wanted the cash for two reasons. “I’m going to pay off bills and go on a family vaca-tion in April (to Mexico), ” she said.Whenever she sees the show on TV, Hole now can pass on her cameo experience to inquisitive family and friends. “I’m sure the story will get more elaborate as time goes by, ” she said.

America’s #1 Cue Shaper and Scuffer

Dealer Inquiries Invited. 1-888-CUECUBE

CUE CUBE CORPORATION Manufacurer and Distributor of Quality Billiard Accessories

WHO WE ARE

Like many tip tools and cue accessories, the Cue Cube was made by someone who wanted a tool for themselves. Others in their local poolroom wanted one and it turned into a business. In 1982 the “company” was purchased and at the suggestion of some pro players the curvature and grit roughness were modified, though the cube shape and metal base were retained. The Cue Cube Corporation, maker of the “Original Cue Cube” is celebrating its 26th year as one of the premier manufacturers of billiard cue shaping devices in the United States. In fact the trademarked names “Cue Cube” and “Shaft Slicker” are so prevalent throughout the billiard world that, like Scotch brand cellophane tape, or Kleenex tissue, users of tip shapers or maintenance tools tend to refer to all of them as Cue Cubes or Shaft Slickers. The Cue Cube has become one of the most successful and widely-recognized products in the billiard world. Cue Cube Corporation currently distributes its products to countries around the globe. The Shaft Slicker, a treated leather/nylon item for shaft maintenance, was put into production and marketed in the mid-80s and in 1993 the two items were packaged together for the first time as the “Pool Cue Maintenance Kit”. Later developments adapted the Cue Cube for attachment on a key chain plus at least six different colors are now available for the cube bodies. In addition the labels, traditionally silver, have now included a gold edition and a patriotic red, white and blue model. This small “started-in-a-garage” company from Milwaukee, like the little engine that could, is still going strong, with steadily increasing sales year by year. Cue Cube is very proud to have competed successfully in a market with a lot of import competition. They are proud to stamp “MADE IN U.S.A.” on their every product. Thanks to Bruce Venzke and Tom Shaw. The above was excerpted from their articles in Pool and Billiard Magazine. (12-02 & 1-04)

SHAFT SLICKER Shaft Slicker is made of soft high quality genuine leather on one side and a cleaning pad on the other side. The gentle, not abrasive cleaning side removes the dirt and oils that accumulate on the cue from repeated use. After cleaning, the specially treated soft natural leather smoothes the shaft for a perfect stroke

CUE CUBE CORPORATION Manufacurer and Distributor of Quality Billiard Accessories

CUE CUBE One side of this two-in-one tool shapes the cue tip to the proper radius, while the other scuffs the cue tip to hold chalk and prevent miscues. Made of solid metal with silicon carbide, this device lasts and lasts. This product is used by professional players. The Cue Cube has a successful track record because it works so well and is reasonably priced. Cue Cubes come in avariety of colors, fiishes, and packaging. Many leading cue manufacturers recommend the CUE CUBE and SHAFT SLICKER.

Mika “The Iceman” Immonen Cools ItChicago, IL - Poison Cues Challenge Match Series i Chicago started off with stop #1 at Pressure Billiards. Dragon Promotions with host Wahib Merchant presented pool champions Mika Immonen, Francisco Bustamante, and Charlie Williams to Chicago fans for a night of billiard fun and education.

The trio of champions started with a free one hour clinic teaching fans special tips on draw shots, drills, speed control, kicking, and the break. The room was packed with fans squeezing next to each other to get a glimpse of the instruction by some of pool’s great-est. Next a limited nine spots for VIPs were all sold out to challenge the pros in a race to 5 games play-ing 9-Ball. Although nobody could upset the champi-ons, many won their share of games and excitement with one fortunate fan winning a new jump cue for winning four games, more than any other amateur.

Bustamante, Owner Merchant, Immonen, & WilliamsAll photos courtesy of Zarah Delrosario Bustamante helps fans learn during the free clinic

In the main event, Lucasi 10-Ball Classic Champ & Predator Rep Williams took on Mezz Cues Rep & US Open Champion Immonen first in a race to 5 10-Ball match. Immonen took a 3-1 lead before Williams mounted a comeback to tie at 4-4. A missed 3ball by Mika gave Charlie a chance for an out and he ran down with two balls left. Unfortu-nately he missed position on the 8-Ball with the 10-Ball nearby, and gave Immonen the 5-4 win.

Former Women’s Brunswick Billiard

Pro DiesLAKE PLACID - She went from being a professional bowler to the first female in North America to be trained as a diesel fuel injection technician. Betty Dooley Nieman, 81, was born in Maspeth, N.Y. She and her husband Max, who she married in 1946, found their way to Miami in 1953 where they set up Atlantic Diesel Inc. In between hours with Max in the shop, Betty pursued a career with Brunswick and was a professional bowler and a member of “The Floridians.” As one of five best female bowlers in the country, the team travelled the world competing in women’s leagues as well as mens’ leagues. Brunswick seized the opportunity to upscale their billiards games and hired Betty to travel the coun-try as they closed down pool halls and re-opened billiards in bowling alleys. Spending time in Chica-go under the tutelage of Willy Masconi, she turned professional in the late ’50s. Travelling with Mas-coni, Betty continued the circuit with Masconi as a professional bowling and billiard player represent-ing Brunswick until 1965. Upon completion of diesel fuel injection schooling in 1967, she began working alongside Max in Mi-ami and then again when they moved to Lake Plac-id in 1971. Even after Max’s death in 2000, Betty continued the business with the help of the late Jerry Eichhorn until the doors were closed in 2005. Betty became a member of the Eastern Star in Iowa when she was just 19. She retained active mem-bership for more than 50 years, and wore proudly her 50-year pin. She was a member of First Pres-byterian Church in Miami and First Presbyterian Church of Lake Placid. Betty died Jan. 28, 2009. She is survived by her devoted friend, Georgina Eichhorn, Georgie’s daughter Lorri Eichhorn, and sister, Martha Sievers.

From A BarnTo A Billiard Table

Local business turns old wooden building into a pool table

By Seth Lightcap - Sierra Sun

Don’t burn that old barn. Truckee’s Brown Chicken Log Works just might have a use for it.

The local furniture maker specializes in creating handcrafted wood luxuries such as pool tables out of reclaimed wood from old structures. For the last month Brown Chicken owner Mark Bjornson has been painstakingly creating one of these pool ta-bles from 19th century Pennsylvanian White Oak barn posts he milled to size outside his Prosser workshop. By using wood chunks that highlight the axe-hewn character of the farmers who originally milled them and finishing touches such as Buffalo Nickel rail sights, Bjornson’s finished product blends the look of yesteryear with modern day construction tech-niques.

As the 2009/10 Season of the Viking Tour gets ready to kick off it’s only natural that we look back and take stock of how the Viking Tour did in it’s 07/08 season. As most business were cutting back and citing declines in revenues due to reces-sionary reasons we are pleasantly surprised to say the Viking Tour had it’s best season ever for our players, sponsors and room owners alike in the 15 year history of the tour.

During the past tour season the Viking Cue 9-Ball Tour added $154,500 in cash prizes to the tour event prize funds and an additional $5,000 in Vi-king Cues were given away as prizes to junior play-ers that participated in the events. With the added monies and the tournament prize funds combined the tour gave away over 1/2 million dollars in cash prizes to our members last season.

The tour was originally scheduled to only have 91 events but added an additional 53 events to its roster midway through the season. Prior to last years record breaking season the highest record of events the Viking Tour ever held in a single season was 93. Last season was a 65% increase in events from the prior record.

Viking Tour Director, Mike Janis stated. “Our re-cord breaking year is due mainly to our sponsors. They put their faith in us and donated well over $300,000 in products to the tour that we passed on to our host locations and that’s what gave us the ability to do 144 events and promote our sport so effectively.” The tour was also able to attract additional outside industry sponsors to the events (Roaring Lion Energy Drink, Miller Lite, Motel 6 and Studio 6) added to the success for our location owners and players.

Additional factors played into the tours success last year.

Early in the season the tour saw a major increase in amateur player participation. This increase led the tour to expand the amateur division and add an amateur-advanced division along with its open di-vision which accounted for the increase in events. Along with this change the tours host locations and the tour saw an increase in sales revenues of 70% compared to same sales data from previous years. Percentage wise, the amateur divisions accounted for 49% of all participants and of sales while the open division declined to 36%. 10% Woman and 5% junior players accounted for the rest.

“The increase in participation, sponsorship prod-ucts and sales at the events thrilled the owners of the host locations last season.”, stated Viking Tour Co-Director Terrie Janis. She added, “Before Mike and I could pack up the tour and head out the door the location owners were already scheduling their next events with us. It was amazing!”

Every Viking Tour location last season received double the money added to their event in products from the Viking Tour sponsors. This in itself made the events virtually free for each host location and helps to explain their excitement.

The 2009/10 season is already looking to be an-other banner year for the tour.

Sponsorship is up. Products given to the host loca-tions for hosting Viking Tour events from the tours sponsors already exceed an amazing 200% over the cost of hosting an event. In the first quarter of the season the tour is expanding into Virginia, Missouri and SE Florida. To top it off the tour has already completely booked all but two possible weekends through June of 2009 and already has events waiting to be scheduled through 2010.

About Viking CueIn the early 60’s Viking Cue Mfg., Inc. founder Gordon Hart began making two-piece pool cues in the basement of his poolroom in Stoughton, Wisconsin. Gordon traveled to various tournaments to sell his cues. In a short period of time, Viking cues became popular with many of the top players. Viking was incorporated in 1965. By the late 1960s, Gordon spent more time making cues, so he sold the poolroom and moved the cue business to its present location in Madison, Wisconsin. He expanded production capabilities and began selling cues throughout the United States and abroad.

Viking grew steadily through the 1970s and early 1980s. At that time, Gordon’s children, Robin, Barry and Darcy became involved with the business. Then in 1986 the major motion picture, The Color of Money, was released and created a boom in the billiard industry. Sales of Viking cues skyrocketed, and the company experienced phenomenal growth as a result.

As the 1980s came to a close, Gordon began updating machinery and investing in state-of-the-art equipment to ensure a quality product. Promotional efforts increased with an extensive advertising and public relations program coordinated by Gordon’s wife, Nancy, which helped make Viking a household name. Vikings efforts coupled with significant product quality enhancements, positioned the company as a leader in the billiard industry.

By the mid-1990s, Viking hired a full sales staff to handle the needs of their constantly growing list of distributors and dealers throughout the world. At the same time, Robin and Barry took over the day-to-day operations, and granddaughter Shawna became involved with the company. Nancy was very active in the Billiard Congress of America in the 1990’s, serving on its board of directors. Years earlier, she served on the board of the Billiard & Bowling Institute of America, and was their First Female President. In 1994, Gordon was honored with the first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Cue Makers Association.

Viking is known for its generous support of various tournaments and organizations including Nationally televised events, the Viking Nine Ball Tour, Super Billiards Expo, VNEA, BCA League and National Wheelchair Poolplayer Association Inc.

In the 2000’s, Barry became active in the Billiard Congress of America, serving on its board of directors. Grandson Justin joined Viking to continue the tradition of the family business.

As one of the oldest manufacturers of cues in America, Viking has the strictest quality control in the industry. The continual upgrading of machinery and superior technology is what makes Viking the top cue manufacturer in the industry. Viking lives up to the expectations of the millions of current and future owners of the most critical tool for your game.

Viking Cues are proudly and exclusively made in the U.S.A.

Stop playing with that stick AND learn the truth about your balls

Did you know when you are making that all important break the cue ball is traveling from 0 to 20 mph (Avg.) in a fraction of a second causing an impact temperature of up to 482 degrees F. I bet you didn’t know your break was that strong. I just have to say that is pretty impressive big boy. That massive strength you put into your break overtime leaves burn spots on the balls causing them not to fit into the rack as tight as they should. Maybe the next time you are having a difficult time getting that tight rack try switching out your balls.

Are your balls worn out? That’s usually the problem.

Now

This is a great little exercise to learn how to follow and draw for basic position zones.

Place one ball on the foot spot (8-ball) and another on the headspot (9-ball). Place a third ball in the dead center of the table. Last, place the cue-ball anywhere on the straight line that allows you to pocket the center ball in a corner pocket and either follow or draw for postion on the next ball. You can shoot one rack of balls to follow to cue ball position A for the 8-ball, and another rack of balls to draw to cue ball position B for position on the 9-ball.

Your position goal should be to achieve either straight in position on the next shot, or at least a comfort-able confident cut shot, no more than say a 30 degree angle.

Just as some patterns show up on the table more often than others, so do some players show up at tournaments more often than others. For example, you’ll walk into a tavern and see players you saw at another tavern tournament, or someone who played in a league you played in. Just as you have to leaarn how to play patterns, you have to learn how to play those players.

Now what I mean by this is you should learn these players weaknesses in their game as well as their strengths. You do not have to be playing a player to learn this, just watch him/her shooting in between your matches.

Here are some weaknesses I look for in a player:1. Can he/she shoot over a ball well?2. Can he/she make shots when the cue is frozen to the rail?3. Can he/she play combinations?4. Can he/she bank?5. Can he/she make long shots?6. Can he/she make rail shots?

Now here’s where this information can come into play to your advantage. In a game of 8-ball, let’s say you have decided to play safe. You’re on the eight and your opponent has six or seven balls left on the table. You’re going to have to let him/her see some kind of shot. Let him see a bank shot if he’s weak in his banks, or a tough combination if he struggles in that area. Leave him frozen to the rail if you haven’t seen him make a shot like that since dinosaurs were roam-ing around.

Here’s another example of a time to consider his weak point. You are considering taking a tough shot. Your chance of making this shot are 50/50. Think where the cue ball will end up if you miss. If it happens to leave your opponent on a shot he is weak in, then I would try to make the shot. If it leaves him an easy out, then I would be thinking a lot harder about my option to play safe.

When some players find your weakness and use it against you and it costs you a tournament practice that part of your game until you’ve mastered it. Then the next time he plays you that way, you’ll walk up to the table with confidence, fire the shot in, sending your opponent to the losers bracket.

The Jump Buddy is a hand-supporting bridge. It will help you learn to make jump shots, masse’ shots, and support your hand bridging over other balls.

How It WorksThe Jump Buddy is a s turdy hand-bridge that provides a stable platform for this shot. It can be used as a training aid, or in regular play.

The Jump Buddy provides a stable platform for the bridge hand. It also fits easily over another ball, allowing the player to bring the hand closer to the cue ball. This improves the accuracy of the shot

Shots near the rails present additional challenges. If there is not room to use the standard tripod, one of the legs can be replaced with a short “rail leg.”

The Jump Buddy includes:

The 8-ball tripod with three removable legs, a single shorter rail leg, and the carrying pouch.

The Jump-Buddy supports the hand during difficult pool shots, including jump shots and masse shots. Includes carrying bag and instructions. Price: $29.95 Availble from: www.Jump-Buddy.com

The Eight Ball Bible BookThe Eight Ball Bible is one of the most impressive guides to bar table play on the market. This 283 page book features

How it Works

AcCueShot ™ is a small electronic device that is placed on the far rail of the billiards table. On the front of the AcCueShot ™ device is an illuminated target bar for the player to aim at. On the face of theAccCue-Shot ™ device are three indicators: left arrow, center bulls eye and a right arrow. The player stands at the opposite side of the table and then aims and shoots the cue ball at the ™ target bar. Utilizing its infrared optics and microprocessor, AcCueShot ™ calculates where the cue ball hits the rail with respect to the target bar and illuminates the appropriate indicator; left arrow if left of the target, right arrow if right of the target and bulls eye if on the target. In addition, AcCueShot ™ has a built in speaker that will emit a unique sequence of tones for each condition (left, right and bulls eye hits).

Willard’s Cue Tip Shaper Meets Needto Re-shape Cue Tips Willard’s Cue Products is famous for its Cue Tip Shaper. Here’s why: Over time, a cue tip can flatten with use. When the tip is improperly shaped, the angle at which the ball leaves the tip will no longer be true and your aim will be adversely affected.

The human eye cannot see the precise curvature of the cue tip that is necessary for accurate shots. Willard’s dual-featured cue tip shaper provides both the carbide grit shaping device and a precision gauge in a single convenient tool for correctly-shaped tips every time!

A properly-shaped cue tip gives you the precisely-curved striking surface necessary to hit the ball accurately for each shot.
