Darkness fell quickly. I sat down and leaned against the window of the train carriage. While I watched the lights of the outside world moving swiftlyin the window glass, memoriesalso flickered past.

When I sat down, I remembered journeys —

Journeys by boat (sun loungers on the deck ), journeys by train(first class, rarely ), journeys bybus ( bumpy ), memories of beautiful chairs, uncomfortable,old chairs, chairs that tell long stories even when we do not ownthem. Furniture makes history, tells tales of the landscape of its origin, of transitions and

displacements from one countryto another, from the attic to the salon; tales of generations changing, of tired, exhausted people, of people coming home. Whoever owns a piece of furniture also continues to write its story — and who knowsif the furniture writes part of our own story in turn?
