Italy at a glance

• People crazy for Mobile services

• Nightmare to dig (ancient ruins, bureaucracy)

• Strong (Ex) Incumbent (51% fixed Bb)

• No Cable TV, still talking on FTT…

• A factor in the Mediterranean scenario

Yes. Mobile.(source wearesocial.sg)

Hard to dig• First Contry in the

UNESCO World Heritage Sites Ranking (50)

• More sites than US(22) &Russia(26) together

No Cable, Weak Copper(Akamai SOTI Q3 2014)

Fixed Mobile

Strong Incumbent(fixed Bb, 2014)

• Telecom Italia 7m

• Wind 2m

• Fastweb 2m

• Vodafone 2m

• Others 1,1m

• Copper Lines 13m

• Fibre 0,3m

• Wireless 0,8m

Loads of Wet Capacity• Just in Sicily, more than

15 existing Submarine cables landing in 3 main landing stations areas

• No need to rigenerate signal between Italy and North Africa

• Southmost content-rich country in Europe

So…• Opportunities are there but the country is a tough eco-

system

• Add to the picture:

• Few Carrier Neutral Data Centers

• Adjacent markets aggression by ISPs following Incumbent approach

This is the environment where Mix was born and grew up…

Mix Milano History• Est. 1996 as a volunteer effort by group of Italian

independent ISPs located in west side Milano Via Caldera business campus

• Evolved into a Ltd Company in 2000

• The initial members became the first set of shareholders

• Carrier Neutral DC are not there (now and then) so the first task of the new company was to build and operate a small datacenter fully dedicated to Peering and Interconnection…

MIX as a Carrier Telehouse…

• MIX hosts in the datacenter only Peering gear from ISP connecting to the Public Peering LAN

• …and Carrier Equipment to terminate capacity and other interconnections (PNI, NNI etc.)

• Mix does not provide caged areas and do not host servers apart from Root NS and other global utility platforms like RIPE Atlas anchors

…Inside a DataCenter crowded Business Campus

• With these set of policies MIX do not jeopardize neighborhood Colocators' Business. Colocators have to offer Med/High power density colo, cages and SLAs

• Mix offers ‘Effort at its best’ neutral colo for interconnections

• The situation has proven to be a win-win scenario for both parties

Few Numbers

• DataCenter: 450 Sqm, Tier 3+, 200 KVA, 80 AC racks for routers and IX gear, 60 ETSI carriers racks, being expanded this year

• 7 people Ltd company, acting as a cost-recovery not-for-profit. This has proven as the most effective way of managing the beast, to match state-of-the-art services and efficiency

Future

• MIX will expand into new datacenters in Milano Metro Area adding redundancy to its platform and providing intra-DC connectivity

• Mix is working on a long term project to open up new PoP closer to Submarine Cables LS in the South. This will boost the role of the Country in the Mediterranean Telecommunication Scenario. The aim is for Italy to become a ‘bridge’ between Med Basin and Continental Europe, boosting the growth of the national infrastructure and pushing content hosting southwards

Discussion Panel

• Q1 What makes IX interesting for a large content provider?

• Q2 Collaboration and competition between IX and backbone operators

• Q3 IX and data centers: Is cooperation possible?

• Q4 Can participants of the same IXP enter into commercial relations with each other?

• Q5 Role of IX in ensuring clean license of content and information transfer, incl. antivirus protection

Panel Q1 The Value of an IXP

An IXP has two set of values: Technical and Relational

T1: Performance: Keeps Local traffic Local: lower latencies for Content Providers to reach eyeballs!

T2: Control: Peering enhance Routing control, minimizes Routing Hijacking Threat

T3: Efficiency: Minimizes Transit bills especially for small/medium ISPs

R1: Member community supports cooperation, local development, new projects and new ideas

R2: IXP is a good partner for local ISP / Internet Associations

Panel Q2/Q4 IX and Backbone Operators• The Internet Exchange is also a great

Marketplace.

• In the Middle Ages, the Town Square where every point of the area can be seen by any point of view is the ideal location of the Market, which boosts the growth of the entire city…and where Merchants bring safely their goods.

• Peering is not Transit…

Panel Q3IXes and Datacenters• Often the IX is just another service of the

Colocators portfolio, the US-way…

• But is a proven fact that the Western European mode l o f I ndependen t , membership-based IX is successful…

• MIX is a live example that IX and DC can coexist and progress in an hostile environment!

Panel Q5IX and DRM

• IX is a bit ‘far’ from Digital Rights Management: however IXes can contribute dramatically to Internet Security from the ‘infrastructure’ (layer 0-3 of the OSI pile) perspective;

• Again ‘IX keeps local traffic local’ and minimizes hijacking effects;

• Also DDos attacks can be effectively narrowed at IXes;

Grazie!
