Camille Juban, Ingrid Larouche and Casey Rehrer all won their respective men’s, women’s and youth’s overall American windsurfing Tour titles this weekend, after a spectacular Makani Classic event at Hookipa Beach park.

In the beginning of October I was enjoying my time in Guadeloupe but, specially getting ready mentally and physically for this final event in Hookipa where I knew that I needed to be ready to fight if I wanted to have a chance to get this overall title. So I trained physically by surfing a lot, running a lot, some exercise at home and stretching and mentally I was just staying focus on my goal.

I didn’t wanted to arrive a long time before the contest because first; I wanted to enjoy the little time I had in Guadeloupe and second I knew that I was gonna have to much pressure, so I arrived two days before, my father and brother also came and arrived before so I just spend 2 days almost only with the family and that’s perfect to stay focus and get ready (thanks to them)

We had to wait another two days before a huge swell came and we could start competing. It was really scaring, the channel was closing out, lot of pressure from the riders, we all knew that it was gonna be a great contest.

FIRST OVERALL

TITLE

As the channel was closing out and the wind was light they made long heat so we did just the first round and the first heat of the second round where I was in against Josh Stone, Pascal Hardi and Morgan Noireaux. It was in the end of afternoon, the wind was light and I don’t know why but we had a lot of big set like mast and a half coming in during our heat I almost went to the rocks 3 times, almost got caught by a double mast hight wave outside but I had three ok waves and it was just enough to pass in front of Morgan but it was one of the hardest heat I’ve ever made.

The day after I made it to the final and I didn’t sails as I wanted so I got third, Levi didn’t do good so that was keeping me on the overall lead but the double elimination was on so everything could happen still.

Polakow, Morgann, Boujma, Goya, Levi, Lenny were out so I was in a heat against the two survivor from the double elimination : Robby Swift and Brawzinho and Nat Gill who got 4° in the single.

Brawzinho and I had a good heat and had to compete against each other to go against Bernd. He had a really good heat so that was done for me, missed the podium from nothing but I’m really happy to win the 2012 American Windsurfing Tour overall title.

You never know what fall will bring when you live in the Gorge, but this year, October was beautiful; warm, sunny and yes, windy (Well, at least for the first part). Windy enough to get my 2.9 legend out, yet again, for another crazy-windy session at the “hatch”. With Richard Hallman out on the water taking photos, you have no choice but going for it, even though just sailing along can be eerie at times when gusts reach over 40 mph. yap, 2.9 and 3.3, my most used sails in the Gorge….

Then off to Maui! With the last stop of the AWT event coming up (the Maui Makani classic), I really needed to be in the waves and sail ho’okipa. We arrived mid - October, and were able to catch the last end of a swell to then sail fairly small waves for a week straight. I was nervous that the conditions were not going to get me prepared for the large northwest swells forecasted to arrive for the competition but at least I got time on the water to get used to my new 3.8 and 4.2 mutants. Wow, I absolutely love the light

feel and maneuverability of those small, yet powerful sails, giving me more drive on the bottom turns, but definitely requiring me to throw my body and move my hands more on the top turns. After missing 2 of the past 5 AWT events this year, I had to finish top 3 at the Maui makani Classic to win the overall again for 2012. With big names registered like Junko Nagoshi, Tatiana Howard, Anna-Marie Reichman, Tiffani Ward, little ripper Fiona Wylde and windsurf legend Angela Cochran (to name a few) there was really a lot of pressure ! 20 women entered the event! That has to be a record!

And so the event began; as predicted, the big northwest swell came, providing for plenty of excitement for the riders and spectators alike. The first day of the contest was just ridiculous with huge sets closing out the channel and waves as big as what you see at Jaws making it a day for pro men exclusively. Oufff! The next day was windier and slightly smaller, and the women went out and got to sail perfect 4.2 and mast high conditions for our first round. I caught some of the biggest waves I have been on all year, sailed conservatively but came out on top in my first heat. We were then called back on the water day 6 of the 10-day window, as another swell arrived, giving us once again breezy and logo to mast high conditions. I got lucky to advance in quarterfinal coming 2nd to Sarah Delauney who caught the wave of the day while Tiffany Ward broke her extension after going for a late hit on a mast high wave. Moving on to semi-finals, against Junko Nagoshi, who, let’s face it, is unbeatable at Hookipa, I was able to catch a few smaller size waves, while Sarah, unfortunately spent a big part of the heat dealing with the rocks and making it out the channel. And here I was in finals, against Junko, Angela and Tatiana. As soon as the green flag went up, the wind cranked up as a squall came through, making me wish I had opted for the 3.8 instead of the 4.2. I sailed the best I could in overpowered and intimidating conditions and finished 3rd, behind Junko and Angela. I am of course very pleased with my ranking, although, like many people I’m sure, wish I had sailed better during my heats. I got a couple more weeks on Maui and have only one thing on my mind: Sail at Hookipa with my new awesome mutants!!

This month has been crowded, big and light. It seems like Maui’s windsurf population has tripled this month. By the time the competition came around, parking was non existent at Ho’okipa. My dad had drive the car down at around 7am and ride his bike back.

The first day of the contest was a no go along with the second but on the third day we had a monster swell and just barely enough wind to get out. Head judge Matt Pritchard decided to run the pros, i decide to sit up on the cliff and watch some of my heroes shred. Jason Polakow was incredible hitting the lip with no fear Uncle Josh looked stoked and excited to be out there in the massive waves, unlike some of the other pros. My longtime friend Bernd Roediger was out there to seemingly right at home and unfazed by the 20+ foot giants. The next day I got to sail, my 3.8 mutant was awesome on the wave, its so compact and light weight I didn’t think I every wanted to use another sail… Until a couple days later when it was really light, to light for my 3.8 and even my 4.2 mutant, so I borrowed a 4.5 Ghost XT. WOAH. The GhostXT is lightest sail I have ever sailed.

I had no trouble on the wave making tight bottom turns and hitting the lip or doing big aerials and for me 4.5 is huge and i don’t like to sail big sails (above 4.2). Thanks to the light weight and power of the GhostXT I was able to propel my self all the way to the finals in youth where I took second behind Tom Juban. In amateur I made it through a couple rounds but I had poor wave selection and got knocked out just before the semi finals. Over all in youth for the whole tour I took first place and over all in amateur for the whole tour I took second. Using the GhostXT I had a huge advantage, most of the other guys were on 5.0s or bigger and I was able to use 4.5 and be plaining. I think I need to order a GhostXT for this winter because its looking light.

BACK ON THE PODIUMWhat a kick ass month October turned out to be!!! It started out in Sylt with lots of wind and not to much racing (which was ok for me) and ended in Maui with some sick new TR-9 racing machines!!

At the beginning of October I was stuck on a cold wet Island in the North Sea freezing my okole off waiting for the wind to calm down. Normally in Sylt we are waiting for the


wind to pick up to go on the water but this year we were waiting for it to die so racing could get back on the water. At the start of the event we did two rounds of racing and after these two rounds I was sitting in fifth place overall for the event and the way things sat it would be enough to move me up to third overall in racing for the year. However it was still very early in the event and with seven more days left I was sure we would get more racing in and things could still shuffle. In the end though it turned out to be a wave a freestyle year in Sylt and us racers never made it back on the water, or at least not long enough to get a full round in. I am super stoked to finish the year this way it was a great step up from sixth place overall last year and back on the podium, a huge endorsement for my new MauiSails!!

Back on Maui it was still not time to relax yet, as we had the rest of October to finish tuning up our TR-9 racing sails as the PWA registration deadline was looming large and would come late on Halloween night. Art, Barry and Phil worked all the magic they could and when I got back to Maui from Sylt they had a huge stack of new TR-9 designs for me and Phil to test. We had all sizes from 6.3 up to 11.0 and the great Maui winds did not let us down as they threw everything we needed our way. It worked out perfectly this year as I had all my new JP slalom boards to test with and with no time to waste we went at it. Not everything worked out as we wanted but that is testing, you need to try some different things in order to move forward, step out of the box sometimes. But by the end we had made some great improvements not only in the performance which of course is always our number one goal but also in the looks, I have to say the TR9’s look amazing!!! We worked right up to the end, measuring the last few sizes on the last day of the month and sent them in just ahead of the deadline. I am certainly looking forward to getting these things on a race course, slalom or formula!!!

I didn’t manage to fit much else in this October as I was pretty focused on giving the sails as much priority as possible. I did manage a bit of SUP time with the family as well as some yard work but that is really about all. But now that the race sail testing is done and the PWA racing season is over I have a bit of time to relax and celebrate, this will be short though as I am ready to get back to work testing, training and tuning for next season. I have some exciting new plans for training so it will be interesting to see how they fit in with my fitness and getting in even better shape for next year.

Thanks to all of those who supported and motivated me this PWA racing season it was well worth all of it and I can honestly say I am already excited for next season!!!

This picture was taken during the prize giving two days after the PWA slalom event in Turkey Alacati.There was a RedBull longdistance race where I finished 3rd. I was on the 117 Isonic boards and my TR-8 7.6. Ben van der Steen finished 5th with Jimmy Diaz in 6th. I think there were l65 windsurfers and many kiters.

Cold October in Westerland Sylt and what an event to finish the PWA season with.It was too bad we didn’t race much as I was feeling good in Sylt. Finally I got the Zfin’s i needed for my light wind board. I was feeling so fast but during both my races I got caught in sea weeds and I felt bad that this had to happen. The TR-8 7.6 was feeling perfect for me. I really can’t believe how good these TR-8 sails are in all the conditions.

My freestyling in Sylt didn’t go as I thought it would be. Usually I am good in nasty conditions but I really don’t know what happen this time. Seems like my eyes were getting like foggy... I couldn’t see properly, my mind was somewhere else. But I did as good that i could in Sylt and finishing 7th is okay for me. The Loco are working great and seems like i could have still manage to sail with the 4.8 in all the heats.

I signed up for the waves but as I am not used to wave riding but maybe I couldn’t find any waves to ride in my heats, but I felt good to be able to compete in the waves. I did use the Loco as it seems like the Loco could also be used in the waves :). How cool is that!?!

Well as the season finished, my overall PWA disciplines results are as follow: 20th in Slalom and 4th in Freestyle

Being back on Bonaire where I arrived just in time for the 45th Bonaire International Regatta and was able to organize the tow in session. Iri, Bjorn, Choco, Andres and I were all there to give the spectators a great night session show. We even took the tow in freestyling to the next level with pulling: double culo, culo into spock, double airflaka, and kono’s.

As we get to the hurrican season, Bonaire is still calm, very warm and rainy at times, but it’s the time of the year where October and mid November is the time to relax or go fishing or wait for the perfect wave that we get from the affect of the hurricanes.

Well life is what you make of it, live it the way you feel comfortable and happy.

AWESOME OCTOBER FROM LA TO THE GORGE TO MAUI!October was a traveling month for me, packed with, finally yet again, a lot of wavesailing! Last month when I wrote my newsletter I was sitting on a plane on my way back up to Hood River after an awesome 5 day trip to LA packed with solid days on my 5.1 Mutant at Leo Carrillo. Upon landing at PDX, my friend Bryan Metcalf-Perez, just off the plane from Sylt and the last PWA freestyle comp of the year, picked me up and we proceeded to head the hour east back out to Hood River, where we were welcomed with perfect freestyle conditions for my 4.4 Loco at the Hatch. October is pretty late in the season for the gorge, and we were lucky to see clear skies and the corridor fully filled in, and we’re stoked to get one last session in at the hatch before officially calling it game over for the gorge season for us.

After three days of frantic season cleaning and packing, Ingrid and I loaded up my van and took off at 2:30am for the airport.. Maui bound!!! Getting in around noon, we headed straight from the airport to Hookipa. Coming around the bend at Mama’s and looking up past lanes, I was ecstatic to see head-logo high sets rolling through with perfect 4.6 Mutant winds. Stepping into the water at the ’ho and feeling the warm water hit my feet felt absolutely wonderful, and I charged out through the lineup with a massive smile on my face.

Leading up to the AWT Makani Classic we had a wide variety of conditions, with waves anywhere from waist-mast high, and winds from 10kts-35kts. In every condition, the Mutant excelled for me above and beyond any of my expectations. Being so incredibly light with a good low-end power, in marginal winds there is no comparison to the Mutant as far as getting you out through the break and closest to the peak faster than you can believe. On the wave, it’s extra grunt drives you out of the bottom turn, and the agility of the sail, being so lightweight, even at 5.1, makes you feel like the sail is barely there, and you’re practically just surfing! On some of the windier days I got a chance to try out the new 3.8 and I was blown away with not only how smooth the sail felt-even in ridiculously gusty offshore conditions, but also how well it handled the big, big blasts rolling through.

The first day of the AWT makani classic was called off due to light winds, and surfers packed out the point all day. But that didn’t stop me from heading down the coast just one bay to one of my favorite spots, Kuau, for one of the most epic wavesailing sesh’s of my life. Sitting at the log looking out the Kuau channel all we could see was massive walls of whitewater and hardly any wind. There were some occasional lulls between the mast and a half and growing sets, so I decided to rig my 5.1 Mutant and give it a shot. Alone, mind you, as no one else wanted to go out. As I shlogged out and looked upwind, I realized I was the only windsurfer out on the north shore, which was as awesome as it was eerie- was there something I was missing? After my first wave, any worry went out the window.


Again, the 5.1 delivered where no other sail could. I couldn’t plane, at all, but I was easily able to schlog around and through the impact zone to get out to safety and upwind to set up for ride after ride. On more than a couple occasions I was able to pick out waves that were over Mast and a half high, and peeling for 6-7 turns, down the line, with no one out. The next day I told Phil that I was out there, and he was like "that crazy f&$k was you?!?!" What could I say, I couldn’t just let those waves go by, not with my 5.1 Mutant in hand!

The AWT contest went off without a hitch, and we had epic conditions to match a star-studded list of competitors. It was probably the biggest, still rideable, day I had ever seen at Hookipa when they decided to run the Pro Men’s division, and with light winds, I opted yet again to be back on my 5.1. My first heat was late in the day, and against big wave legends Francisco Porcella and Nat Gill. Being friends with both of them, I was stoked to head out for a pretty much solo sesh in massive conditions with two buddies and no one else out. I picked off a couple of the biggest waves of my life, had a few solid turns, but was unable to link them all the way through, and with a massive aerial from Porcella and two really long waves from Nat Gill, I unfortunately did not advance. It was a great wrap-up to the AWT season, and I can’t wait for next year to get back out there and compete!

Race sail development has been the priority this month as the PWA deadline approaches on October 31st. We have had perfect conditions here on Maui to test all the sizes. Micah has been a pleasure to work with, always the consummate professional on and off the water.

All though he usually kicks my butt, I do my best to keep up with him, putting him on a bigger sizes sometimes, making sure he’s overpowered and I’m comfortable. Always good fun, when he’s on the slower sail and he makes me feel good.

We have made good progress on all sizes, with only small changes needed to make big progress. I can’t believe this is our 9th race sail, meaning our 9th year in business here at MauiSails. Time to get back into wave sails and start tuning the TR-9 for next race season.

October has been about seeing the work of a year come home, getting ready for the big bash at Ho’okipa, and fine tuning the final designs for race sail production. We had a great year in the PWA with Micah winning an event and returning to the podium in third place for his highest finish in many years (2010/4th, 2011/6th). He brought a wealth of experience and feedback to the last weeks of testing and I expect even more from both he and Taty next year based on the state of the latest designs. Some sizes are easily measurable with speed increases.

Taty Frans also brought us good news in the form of his final placing in 4th Freestyle, and he had top finishes all year in the tightest discipline on the tour. The differentiation between the moves and the trick levels makes any tiny mistake in a heat hard to recover. And his result in the racing was also super. There were plenty of big guys and big names in the ranking under him, including a former world speed record holder. Taty will have a long career racing if he wants to, and his equipment and preparation will get better (as will his starting :).

Also finishing up with a fantastic event and conditions, the AWT Tour brought MauiSails even more fantastic results. Consistent performance and some winning guaranteed Camille Juban the overall win. Ingrid Larouche won the Women’s overall and our ’new guy’, Casey Rerher won the Juniors. There were also strong performances from Ferdinando Lofredo and Tamara Bockius. The really pleasant surprise was seeing all the titles won on the Mutant designs, something telling for the future.

October saw tsunami warnings and another trip to sea to protect CORNELIA. The new docks at Lahaina Harbor are almost finished and we are now secured to shiny new cleats (no more rust!) and even have lights and a dockbox like the big kids. A photographer in a nearby kayak caught us returning to the harbor and the sails looked real good. Always have to look at the sails :)

The whales are coming next month and soon we will be seeing them frolic off Ho’okipa and along all the shores. November would be a good time to come and visit us here and give a Mutant a try. You will find it hard to go back.

EAfter, many months of R and D, the TR-9 race sail designs are complete, PWA registered and in production. Through a meticulous combination of refinement and evolution, the TR-9 is our fastest, most fine tuned race sail to date.

A significant focus was placed on expanding wind range and improving stability. The TR-9 have a more locked in forward profile down low to ensure perfect balance even in the gustiest conditions. Leech twist profiles have been precisely refined, for clean efficient release on the top end, while maintaining the correct tension for instant and unlimited acceleration. The increased use of Technora tm laminate material in the upper sleeve has reduced stretch and allowed us to flatten and lighten the upper sail body, without loosing leech tension, providing better control when overpowered. On the water, you can feel the improvements as the sails feel light, balanced and stable in the wind, efficiently converting each gust into a burst of acceleration.

In addition to benefiting from all the same shaping updates, the TR-9 XT, technora version of the race sail has experienced some exciting new panel layout changes that have been showing exceptional benefits, especially in larger sizes. The use of ODL04 technora laminate in the upper sail body and leech areas, reduces weight in the most critical region as well as providing a soft and quiet feel to the leech. Maintaining the monofilm in the lower, forward sail body, keeps the crisp reactiveness in place. In our testing, the new XT panel layout has proved to be the ultimate construction for maximum performance in the larger size TR-9XT.

After having a very successful year with the TR-8 race sails, we look forward to seeing its, even faster, successor making appearances on bodies of water around the world.
