The republican delegates of Maui are us a rulo repre-sentative men, and much is to be hoped from their work in theconvention on September 14. It is a very serious question as towhom we shall select to fill our county offices, and all personal feeling and friendship should be put to one side. While none but honestand capable men should be nominated, still th chief interest hangson the question of whom we elect as supervisors. They, above allother county ofticers, will bo vested with grave and serious responsi-bilities requiring tne use of good judgment and carefulIf on the home rule ticket any nominations have been made forsupervisor which meet with approval such nominationsshould be endorsed by the republican convention. If on tne otherhand any candidates are named on the republican ticket as supervisora who are not honest and leliable tnen.tho News will lead thefight against them.

VJt It now seems inevitable that Bulgaria and Turkey will bedrawn into a war which will also necessarily involve 'Servia andMacedonia. If Turkey be allowed a free hand, the war will notcease till the crescent waves triumphantly over the dead bodies ofthe men. women and children of the three minor countries, whichwill henceforth be a portion of Turkey in Europe. It is not likelyhowever thai the Powers will consent to this, and there lies thedanger. Interference betweeu Turkey and Bulgaria may have tobe made with force and arms to be effective, with the danger ofexciting a holy war on the one hand and a conflict between thepowers ou the other. The only rational thing which seems left t0do is to give Russia carte blanche to stop the row, with the con-
dition that Constantinople and the Dardanelles are to be preservedto the Turk.
SJg The republican Hawaiians of Wailuku who turned down thehaoles and elected a straight Hawaiian ticket are not to be particular-ly censured for doing so, especially by the haoles themselves, be-cius-
after all.blood is thicker than water, and it was not a dislike' for the haoles, but, rather an aloha for their own race and kindred
wThich prompted their actions. The main questiou for the haolesto consider is the personnel of the delegates and the class of menwhom they favor for the county offices. If they are honestly seed-
ing to select the right men for county otfices, the haoles should en-
courage them by kindly counsel, and help them to understand thatit is not the color of a man's skin but rather his qualities of mindand heart which should Solely influence them in their choice ot mento hold our county offices.
J& The suggestion of a cup race for Pacific waters is a wise andtimely one, and no reasonable pains or expense should be sparedto accomplish this end. The idea of an international yacht regattain the semi-tropi- c waters of Hawaii would possess unusual attract-ions for yachtsmen all orer the world, and if properly encouraged, our annual September regatta could be expanded into a twoweeks' yachting regatta participated in by yachts Hying the flagsof a dozen competing nationalities. No better single means ofmaking the charms of ohe Islands known to the world than through- -
the medium of two or three successful annual regattas participat-ed in by sister nations could bo devised. .

f5 Lahainaluna is to be given another opportunity to prove itsusefulness. A new and carefully selected corps of teachers hasbeen secured, and money will doubtless be forthcoming to put theschool on a solid basis. There is no institution on Maui whichmeans more to the future of tht? Hawaiian boys on Maui, and if theschool fulfils its present promises, it should prove a Mecca tohundred of Hawaiian boys who peculiarly need the training whichsuch an institution should afford. The parents of such boys shouldbe encouraged to send their sons to Lahainaluna, for we will needsuch boys, as men, in a few years.
o21 Bossism on a small scale prevail. in all county elections
throughout the states, whenever a man is found who it strongenough to be a leader of men, and it would bo singular if like con-
ditions should not arise on Maui, especinlly among good-nature- d
and simple minded Hawaiians who are willing to be led by thosewhom they love and respect. This class of voters however shouldbe taught to use their judgment in- the selection of county officers.
o o
ij The warfare against the mosquito which is inw violently raging in Honolulu and Hilo presents matter for interesting study toWailukaiis, not becauso v ure particularly troubled by mosquitoes, but rather becauso we should learn the important lesson of unitingto tight for tho interests of our town. .Incidentally it would be agood idea for Wailukans to light mosquitoes by emptying all stand-ing water receptactes in their door yards.
o o
5 The meeting held by the citizens of Wailuku on Wednesday, toconfer with Superintendent Cojjor, should only bo tho first of aseries of meetings held to discuss town alfuirs. The good effectsof that first meeting will long be felt in Wailuku, and constant goodwould How from an organization of our citizon to plan and discussfuture measures for the benefit of the town.
AOJ Already threats are being made, both by home rulo and re
publican candidates, that if they fail to secure nominations in thoconventions, they will run as independents. For this reason bothparties should stand pat, name their best men, and then teach thebolters a lesson which they need and which they will remember. '

Cooper first tookup the matter of the appropriationfor a wharf and shed at McGregorLanding, and the sense of the meet-ing was that the work nt the landingshould be pushed, and. that the sumof $10111) from the general road fuudshould be allowed toward buildingthe 1500 feet necessary to connectthe landing with the present road.
It was also decided by a vote ofthe meeting that the $10,000 votedfor lhe construction of a road up laoValley be spent at the lowtr end ofthe rjad, carrying it as far as thefunds will allow after leaving a smallsurplus to clear out and repair thehorse trail to the table lands.
Supt Cooper stated that plans hadben prepared for an eight roombrick school building to be erected onthe new school lot at an early date, and that plans are being consideredfor hydrants, hose carts and achemical engine for the Wailuku firedepartment.
Mr. Cooper stated that it was aleiral question as to whether he asTerritorial Superintendent was au-
thorized to erect county buildings, consequently the matter of the erec-tion of the court house and jail waslaid over for further consideration.
