Several years ago, I received an oval granite touchstonesandblasted and engraved withthis question: "What WouldBuddha Do?"

Regardless which room thisstone has occupied, whether inour home or in the Festivaloffice — and believe me it canbe more than a little unnervingto see it on the bedroom nighttable when you're about tomake love, or on the windowsill of the bathroom as you'reabout to take care of business,or inside the freezer next tothe Ben & Jerry's, or on top ofthe television while CNN iswhizzing around the globecovering humanity's latestinhumanity or triumph — thissimple piece of granite hasreminded me every day to takeaction personally andprofessionally to support thehighest aspirations in all of us.

The stone suggests timeless, timely, constant and yet everchanging answers thatseem all the more important in light of recent world events.

Feel free to substitute anyenlightened being of yourchoice, past or present, for the Buddha. For me, the valueof the stone is not in itsreference to Buddha but in the implications of its question.Am I willing to contemplatethe challenge it poses to mycore values and to mydecisions at work?

I have often said that, at theend of the day, the Maui FilmFestival is about turningdarkness into light. From thefirst moment that light shineson any Festival screen, wehave one primary mission — to turn the "reel" world into a way of being in the “real”world that respects theintegrity and beauty of boththe natural order and therealm of human interaction. For this reason, the granite

cornerstone of this Festival'sprogramming philosophy canbe summarized in one phrase:lifeaffirming storytelling.

Put another way, the 16thannual Maui Film Festivalcelebrates entertainment thatenlightens.

In the film industry, which ispart of global media culture, alltoo often the lowest commondenominator of our collectivewisdom (or lack thereof) notonly passes for entertainmentbut also generates recordbreaking box office numbers.Every year we are challengedto identify the films that aspirehigher. I am pleased to reportthat, in celebration of its 16th‘Birthday/Birthyear’, theFestival staff has put togetheranother ‘jewel box’ festivalthat truly sparkles and shines.

With the hard work behind us,we prepare now for the purepleasure of five days of greatfilmmaking by talentedfilmmakers, an AList ofhonorees worthy of a walkdown the red carpet at theAcademy Awards®, SpiritAwards or Toronto, Sundanceand Telluride film festivals and— Maui being the birthplaceand home of Pacific RimCuisine — exceptionalunforgettable culinarycelebrations to boot!

On behalf of the entire MauiFilm Festival ‘ohana (family),and with a special nod to thefestival’s übertalented codirectors, Stella Rivers andWendy and Ben Goodman —welcome to the 2015 Maui FIlm Festival!

Enjoy the Ride!

Scott Eastwood is a third generation, native Californian, born in the waterfront city of Monterey. Even thoughhe was born in California, Scott grew up in both California and Hawaii, dividing his time between hismother (Jaclyn) and his father (Clint). From an earlyage, Scott was always active, and when he wasn'tplaying Pop Warner Football, he was surfing, fishing,or doing some other outdoor activity.

After graduating high school, Scott enrolled at SantaMonica City College, doing everything from parkingcars to working construction, as he pursued a careerin acting. He eventually graduated from Loyola Maymount University with a degree in communications. For the past several years, Scott has been traveling the world, living life, shooting movies, andsurfing exotic beaches. He's been very fortunate tohave great friends and a large family, all of whom haveplayed a role in making him the individual he is today.

In Vanity Fair magazine’s March 2013 Oscar edition,Scott was singled out as one of Hollywood’s “RisingStars.” Building on this honor, Scott has landed rolesin several highprofile films, including SUICIDE SQUAD,from DC Comics, and director David Ayer, along withthe asyetuntitled Oliver Stone film about EdwardSnowden. This April 2015, Scott can be seen as bullrider “Luke Collins” in THE LONGEST RIDE, an adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks novel, starring opposite Britt Robertson and Alan Alda. THE SEARCH FOR FREEDOM is the story of a cultural revolution grounded in embracing the moment and doing what makes us feel the most alive. Through the eyes of the pioneers and top practitioners of surfing, snowboarding, skiing, skateboarding, and more, we experience an uprising that has changed the face of recreation. We discover how an electrifying new worldcame about through pure energy and imagination and the infinite possibilities of selfexpression available to anyone willing to drop in. This is the first film of its kind to explore the human stories behind the nowmassive Action Sports movement. At its heart, this is a story about living in the present and the freedom that comes to us when we do so.

The Maui Film Festival Lights! Camera! Passion! Award honors a

director for their heartfelt personal and professional and heartfelt

commitment to make movies that both matter and celebrate the

triumph of the human spirit over seemingly insurmountable

challenges.

“While more than proud to announce each year’s Maui Film

Festival honorees, every few years there’s someone whose vision

and passion uniquely align with the Maui Film Festival’s passionate

commitment to activism and original cinema with a bedrock

commitment to compassionate storytelling and lifting both the

spirit and aspirations of Humankind,” said Rivers.

“This year, that person is Academy Award winning documentary

filmmaker Louie Psihoyos who is uniquely deserving of this year’s

‘Lights! Camera! Passion!’ Award. All of us at the Maui Film

Festival take great pride in presenting it to him.”

Academy Award®winning director Louie Psihoyos is the

Executive Director of the Oceanic Preservation Society (OPS), and

is widely regarded as one of the world’s most prominent still

photographers. He has circled the globe dozens of times for

National Geographic and has shot hundreds of covers for other

magazines including Fortune Magazine, Smithsonian, Discover,

GEO, Time, Newsweek, The New York Times Magazine, New York

Magazine, Sports Illustrated and Rock and Ice. His work has also

been seen on the Discovery Channel, National Geographic

Television and the History Channel. His imagination, wit and iconic

imagery have helped illustrate a wide array of complex subjects

and is carried over to his filmmaking.

Psihoyos’s first documentary film, The Cove, has won over 70

awards globally from festivals and critics, including the Oscar® for

Documentary Feature in 2009. The Cove touches many with its

unflinching examination of a dark subject and its ability to reveal

the humanity and compassion in each of us. Its underlying themes

transcend the slaughter of dolphins in Taiji to address the larger

picture of the threat our entire world faces due to human impacts.

Page 45: Maui Film Festival 2015 Program Guide

Utilizing stateoftheart equipment, Oscar®winning director Louie Psihoyos (THE COVE) assembles a team ofactivists intent on showing the world neverbeforeseen images that will change the way we understand issues ofendangered species and mass extinction. Whether infiltrating notorious black markets with guerillastyle tactics, or working with artists to create beautiful imagerywith unexpected animal subjects, RACING EXTINCTION will literally change the way you see the world. Variety, the film industry's 'bible', review of this sweethearted country music seasoned love story favorablycompared to the the Academy Award winning ONCE andBEGIN AGAIN. We couldn't agree more. The simple truthis that two musicians, played by Katherine Heigl and BenBarnes, both down on their luck — she: a crashed musiccareer in her wake, and he: a barely surviving itinerantmusician — find both each other and love, when theymost need it and least expect it. A beautiful story about the transformative power ofmusic, which also highlights two vital issues of our times: poverty and waste pollution that makes clear that where not only can trash is recycled and turnedinto energy for some. It is also a world where trash canbe turned into musical instruments that, in the hands of children from a small village built on a trash dump inParaguay, are capable of making music that sets thehuman spirit free to soar well beyond their, and your, wildest dreams and expectations. Magic is alive and lives in music!

In THE PROPHET, BAFTAnominated director and composer Gary Tarn takes Kahlil Gibran's classic noveland spins it into a cinematic exploration of love, life and loss. An intimate narration, performed by the British actress Thandie Newton, is integrated into Tarn's minimal score for orchestra, guitar, cello and synthesiser. This fictional text is juxtaposed againstfootage shot on the filmmaker's solo travels to Lebanon, Serbia, New York, Milan and London. Finding beauty in the everyday, the film leaves space for each viewer to find their own meaning : an uninhibited eye observing the world through the lens of poetic wisdom.

“Cartoons either make the strange familiar or the familiar strange,” says Bob Mankoff, the subject ofVery SemiSerious. Mankoff would know; he’s the cartoon editor of The New Yorker, which has been aliving museum of America’s best cartoons for 90years. Very SemiSerious delivers an endearing history of the magazine’s storied cartoons and gives its audience a view of the world through thequirky and imaginative lens of cartoonists, a distinctbreed of people indeed. The film goes behind thescenes with Mankoff as he dives into the process ofcreating, selecting and publishing the magazine’s brilliant cartoons. It also offers a delightful parade ofcharacters as it introduces the colorful minds behindthe art — such people as Mort Gerberg, GeorgeBooth, Roz Chast and countless others who put theirpride on the line by submitting cartoons to the magazine that rejects hundreds each week. VerySemiSerious is a lesson in the power of humor, which can be a harmful weapon, a soothing antidote, a psychologist of humanity or an artifact of cultural zeitgeist.
