Sophomore FFA Member Selected for Agricultural Scholarship
Maud High School sophomore Lindsey Martin has been selected as winner of an Agricultural Consortium of Texas scholarship in the amount of $1,000. Martin submitted her name while attending the National FFA Convention held in Indianapolis in October.
The scholarship will be applied to tuition toward a degree in agricultural sciences or natural resources at any Agricultural Consortium of Texas member school.
Mr. DeWight Butler, the mayor of Maud, visited with first grade students on Wednesday, November 2. He brought old photographs of Maud to share. He also answered questions about his job responsibilities as mayor. The first grade students would like to thank Mr. Butler for taking the time to speak to them about our community.

The annual Ag Booster Club party and Chili Cook-Off will be held on Thursday, December 8, at 6:30 p.m. at the Ag building.
The January Booster Club meeting will be held on Monday, January 16, at 6:30 p.m.
m Welcome to
Mr. Mel Hamilton Interim Superintendent
Maud ISD December 1, 2011
m from the Junior Class
The Maud Junior Class would like to thank everyone who worked and helped with the Turkey & Dressing Dinner and Bingo fundraiser on Saturday, November 19. They would especially
like to thank Brookshires of New Boston, Red Bird Pizza, Alamo Supply, and Mrs. Debbie Johnson for their donations, as well as all of the Junior Class parents who donated, cooked, cleaned, and devoted their time in making our fundraiser successful.
Maud High School seniors ask your help in gathering items to be donated to the Salvation Army for Christmas. The drive to collect the items is part of a kindness project that seniors are working on in Mrs. Brinkman’s and Mrs. Smith’s senior English classes.
Items needed include backpacks—new or used, nonperishable food items, toiletry items, socks, blankets, jackets, mittens, and unwrapped toys. Any special items not listed would also be appreciated.
All items should be turned into a senior student or one of the teachers by Tuesday, December 13. The classes will take a field trip on December 14, to the Salvation Army to drop off the items and take a tour of the facility.
m
Freshmen Compile Time Capsule
During the second six weeks, Mrs. Brinkman’s ninth grade English classes created a time capsule which will be stored in the school vault. Each student submitted a letter describing their everyday concerns and struggles. They also included everyday items (or pictures of them) that are popular today, such as iPhones, coke bottle tops, ear phones, and clothing items. They haven’t decided when they will reopen the capsule—possibly their senior year or their ten-year class reunion.

UPCOMING TESTS FOR MAUD MS/HS STUDENTS
Maud High School students will be taking semester exams on January 12-13. On Thursday, January 12, students will take semester exams for class periods 1, 3, 5, and 7. On Friday, January 13, students will take semester exams for class periods 2, 4, 6, and 8. Students must meet the following criteria to be exempt from semester tests: an average between 90-100 with no more than two (2) absences; an average between 80-89 with no more than one (1) absence; or an average between 70-79 with zero (0)absences. In addition they must be present five consecutive days prior to the semester test.
Maud Middle School students will take the third six weeks exams on January 12 and 13. On Thursday, January 12, students will take exams for class periods 1, 3, 5, and 7. On Friday, January 13, students will take exams for class periods 2, 4, 6, and 8. To be exempt from any third six weeks test, students must have zero (0) absences in that class. If a Middle School student is exempt from taking any of their third six weeks tests, they do not have to attend school for that class.
Karen Townsend Maud MS/HS Principal
As the Integrated Pest Management Coordinator for Maud ISD, I would like to share information with the community each month as a reminder of knowledge already possessed, or possibly to provide beneficial new information.
Recluse spiders are also known as fiddle-back or violin spiders. While many people use the violin shaped marking on the cephalothorax (the front part of the spider's body) as a key characteristic, there are other spiders that have similar markings that may be mistaken for recluse spiders. The key characteristic is the eye pattern which consists of three pairs of eyes, called dyads. There is one dyad in the front center and then a dyad on each side in the front.
With the Christmas holidays quickly approaching, people will venture into garages, attics, and storage areas to retrieve decorations. Leather gloves should be worn to avoid spider bites when entering these seldom-disturbed places. Don't panic, but do take precautions. There are numerous spiders that may lurk in these areas, but recluse spiders cause the greatest concern.
Wishing you all a restful, safe, and joyous holiday season!
