The Home is where the heart is!This simple yet universal truth is why it’s often such a heart wrenching thing to broach the subject of a Personal Care Facility with a parent that is languishing at home. For a whole host of reasons; concerns about diet and medication, safety and well being and the malaise that can result from isolation and a lack of direction, you have reluctantly concluded that it may be time to begin to consider placement options. The impulse to act brings to mind all that they’ll be giving up; the family home with memories of spouses and children and the myriad events that comprise growth, passage and change or the apartment that has come to represent independence. They often insist that they can manage, forgetting for the moment that they have come to rely on family or friends to get them to appointments, pick up their medications and to keep them supplied with groceries. Still you worry that they’re eating regularly, taking their medication as prescribed or that maybe they’ve fallen or left the stove on. Finally you accept that this impending change is also part of life and that home and hearth with all its attendant history can do little now to ameliorate a situation that offers little hope of improvement. Now all you’ve got to do is convince them!

Timing is everything! You’ve heard the old saying and there is a lot of truth to it. You will know when the time is right but just getting the conversation started with the prospective resident can be a hurdle fraught with an unexpected array of emotions. You believe you are doing the right thing while at the same time you don’t want to feel like you’re dictating to them and leaving them out of the loop of a decision that will have a signifi cant impact on their lives. So yes, timing does matter. It can mean the difference between having suffi cient time to do your research and explore your options and having to scramble desperately to fi nd a suitable facility because a hospitalization forced your hand and a decision needs to be made quickly. Timing will allow you the luxury of visiting facil-ities and making an informed decision based on what you feel will be the best situation for your parent even if it could mean having to wait for a time for a room to open up as opposed to having your selection limited to facilities that can accommodate you immediately upon discharge. And there is another little discussed benefi t to making the move at the optimal time. A resident will never have a greater ability to adapt to the new environment than right now. It can ease the initial transition and as I have seen numerous times, it can extend their stay as the years roll by because they’ve mastered the basics and become ‘old hands’ at the day to day requirements of thriving in such a setting. I have helped hundreds of family members navigate this diffi -cult emotional terrain. While acknowledging the diffi culties they face, it is my task to turn the focus away from what’s being given up to what’s being gained. In the 25 plus years we’ve been oper-ating Walden III I have witnessed again and again the ‘bounce’ residents get when all the basics are covered and they are eating well, taking their medication as prescribed and seeing the House Physician as soon as the need arises. But its being ‘engaged’ that seems to provide the greatest benefi t. There is structure and social opportunities at every turn and the desire to continue to do as much as they can for themselves is contagious. I have always taken it as a given that each and every one of our residents would rather be living at home and I deeply respect that. Most, however, come to accept that it’s no longer possible and that life can be rewarding in many ways here at Walden III.

What to look for when choosing your eye surgeon and surgery center.Despite numerous advertising campaigns whether they tout low pricing, combined experience or convenient locations you owe it to yourself to base the decision on fact and logic. There are sig-nifi cant differences in the caliber of surgeon and surgical technology you’ll receive.

Bucci Laser Vision knows the choice of refractive surgeons may seem endless and there are so many factors to consider when selecting your surgeon. We’d like to offer the following facts in order to assist you with one of the most important decisions you have to make in your life.

An OPHTHALMOLOGIST is either a medical doctor (M.D.) or an osteopathic physician (D.O.) who is qualifi ed and specially trained to diagnose and treat all eye and visual system problems, both medically and surgically, as well as diagnose general diseases of the body. An ophthalmologist receives a minimum of twelve years of post-high school education, which typically includes four years of college, four years of medical school, one or more years of general clinical training, and a minimum of three years of residency (hospital-based training) in ophthal-mology.

A fellowship-trained corneal specialists has completed a residency and continues expanding his knowledge and experience. “Fellows” are capable of acting as attending physician or consultant physician in the fi eld in which they were trained, such as Ophthalmology. After completing a fellowship in the relevant sub-specialty, the physician is permitted to practice without direct supervision by other physicians in that sub-specialty. Frank A. Bucci, Jr., MD had the privilege to fellowship-train with one of the leading surgeons in the world Dr. Richard S. Lindstrom.

Dr. Bucci is an internationally recognized expert in refractive and cataract surgery. He himself, has performed over 9,000 refractive and 28,000 microsurgical eye procedures. In addition to having over 87 articles published in medical publications and industry journals he was also voted as one of the Top 50 Ophthalmologists in the U.S. by his peers ( ‘07 Cataract and Refractive Surgery Today). He has also gained recognition and frequently lectures on the appropriate patient selection and multifocal lens implant technique which has deemed him the #1 Multifocal surgeon in PA., Top 10 in the USA. This procedure often enables Dr. Bucci to eliminate patients needs for bifocals or reading glasses.

The participation in clinical trials is also recognition of a skilled surgeon and staff. Industry leaders call upon the best surgeons with the most outstanding results in order to carry out their studies which have been, or are in the process of, receiving FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approval. Dr. Bucci and his staff contribute valuable research to numerous ongoing clinical trials.

Lastly, a complete and thorough eye exam, health history, in addition to discussing your lifestyle and visual goals should be conducted by your surgeon and his/her staff. Dr. Bucci is the founder and sole surgeon at Bucci Laser Vision. He not only conducts all surgical consults and procedures, but will share in your care by co managing with your existing Optometrist as well.

Frank A. Bucci Jr., MD

Personal CareSince 1994 Weston Senior Living has been operating Personal Care Centers throughout the Lehigh Valley. These Personal Care Centers offer care to seniors that may need some as-sistance with their day to day lives but do not need a nursing home. Many services are offered in our centers and are based on the individual needs of each resident. Assisting activities of daily living can be as simple as… providing 24 hour supervi-sion and medication management, to assisting with caring for oneself with daily hygiene, bathing, laundry, arranging for and managing their health care, and making and keeping doctor appointments. Whatever the resident needs; we will assist in caring for these needs or offering services that can. Beautiful comfortable private rooms with private baths are available. However companion rooms offer the same amenities if a res-ident prefer to share a room. Dining services are provided in beautiful dining rooms with meals prepared by our trained cu-linary staff to offer an array of foods that will satisfy any taste buds. Activities are offered to meet the psycho-social needs of all residents and to encourage a continuum of their inter-ests they have maintained throughout their lives. Housekeep-ing and Laundry services are provided so tasks of such, which may no longer be safe to provide by oneself, are now done routinely. We have thought of everything a person may need to live as independently as possible with assistance and have experienced trained staff to graciously provide this assistance for the residents.

Skilled Nursing & RehabilitationLong Term Care for a resident that needs more care then what a Personal Care Center can provide is offered at several of our Centers. These centers offer long and short term care for residents who need rehabilitation services or have serious or persistent health issues. Private or Semi-Private rooms are available with baths. Medicare and Insurances are billed as…provided by the resident. Skilled Nursing involves care pro-vided by trained professional performing services needed due to an injury or illness. This could mean a nurse who must attend to a post–operative wound or intravenous medication, a Physical Therapist who might be working with a resident to regain strength and balance issues, a Speech Therapist who is working with a resident who has lost the ability to speak after a stroke, an Occupational Therapist who is also helping that stroke patient to become as independent as possible when it comes to eating and dressing or attending to personal hygiene. Pharmacy, laboratory and radiology services can be provided in this skilled setting. End of life hospice services are provided to the resident and their family member as well. Our parents are strong independent people, but there comes a time when they simply cannot live on their own anymore. Thank goodness for Senior Weston Senior Living Centers. Weston is a warm friendly place with home cooked meals, and private bedrooms just like home. You can feel se-cure knowing they have 24 hour assistance that you may not be able to provide. Planned daily activities with new friends, and if needed Personal Care, Skilled Nursing and even secured memory impaired neighborhoods. “Caring is just what we do!” Please call 1-800-944-9782 to schedule a tour or visit us on-line www.WestonSLC.com.
