We are social beings

Must live peaceably with others

These teach us how to do that

Poor = humble opinion of self

Willing to listen = teachable

Remove pride and arrogance

Door to the kingdom

Blessed are the Poor in Spirit

The 1st Beatitude

“Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.”

The 2nd Beatitude

“He that would be greatest among you shall be your servant.”

“Be of good cheer” Jn. 16:33

“Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!” Phil. 4:4

Blessed are they that Mourn

Beatitude of “happy sorrow”

World tries to avoid mourning and pain

World says get all pleasure you can out of life, produces happiness

Jesus says we must mourn something to attain happiness

Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions, And my sin is always before me. Against You, You only, have I sinned, And done this evil in Your sight— That You may be found just when You speak, And blameless when You judge.”

“Mourn”Peter – Lk. 22:54-62

“Immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, "Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.“ So Peter went out and wept bitterly.”

“Mourn”Isaiah – Isa. 6:5

So I said: "Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, The LORD of hosts."

“Mourn” - Spiritual Mourning“Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that your sorrow led to repentance. For you were made sorry in a godly manner, that you might suffer loss from us in nothing. For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation” 2 Cor. 7:9-10

“Godly Sorrow” Leads to Repentance
