something that interests you because it is important or affects you

The main activity of M A T T E R S is intervention in the archi-tectural heritage; Heritage understood as material and cultural legacy that has survived to the present day, and it becomes a collective good. We consider as heritage items listed buildings and conservation areas, as well as more traditional buildings that become the nearest and unprotected heritage, configurating the most genuine of the territory character.

Documentation and communication of cultural heritage is an essential part of our activity. The preservation of heritage elements depends mainly on their collective consideration . In this sense we participate in the realization of geometric sur-veying, documentation of restoration processes , preliminary

works to define future interventions and content writing for publications and outreach materials aimed at specialized and general public.

The core team consists of:

Clàudia Sanmartí i Martínez \\ Architect by the ETSAB 2000 \\ Postgraduate in Architectural Restoration: from structural analysis to intervention technologies , writing a Doctoral Thesis in progress, inside the Master “Construc-tion Technology”, specialty restoration and rehabilitation.

Oriol Gili i Fort \\ Architect by the ETSAB 2002, specialty Intervention in built heritage \\ Focused on design and development of exhibition projects.

Gemma Serch i Andreu \\ Architect by the ETSAB 2001, specialty Intervention in built heritage \\ Postgraduate in Scientific Museology by the IDEC- UPF, focused in de-sign and development of exhibition projects.

The pavilion is part of the modernist enclosure assembly Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, included in the cu-rrent catalog of historical and artistic heritage of the city of Barcelona, and a UNESCO world heritage site in 1997.The original project was designed by architect Lluís Domè-nech i Montaner, and is part of the first group of pavilions that were built between 1902 and 1944. It is located in the south extrem Enclosure Hospital as the representative entrance of the enclosure. The hospital complex had reached a state of functional collapse and after the transfer of health activity to the new hospital, the restoration of the facades, west and central part, took place in ordrer to recover and restore the origi-nally projected image. The facades, made so strongly historiscista, recover their integrity: fabrics, sculptures, mosaics, decorative elements, and configuration of openings (doorways and windows). The important archival documents preserved in the hospital (and other external centers) has provided guidance throughout the process.

The pavilion is part of the modernist enclosure of the assembly Hospital de Sant Pau, included in the current catalog of historical and artistic heritage of the city of Bar-celona, and a UNESCO World Heritage 1997.Initially contained the uses of management, accounting, performance, archive and library of the enclosure. Over the years it was adapted to other functions (college dorm, hospital emergency room, ...) and all the facilities and services they needed. In 2009 the building had reached a state of functional collapse.

The intervention process has allowed a detailed study of the original systems and building techniques, and return to enjoy the superb quality of the plastic domenechian spaces. The restoration was conceived from a holistic point of view: structure (spatial and supporting), closings and finishes are significant and valuable part of the heri-tage building. Understanding and reuse of construction techniques and applied arts have allowed the recovery of a building that had been disfigured with time.

The archaeological site is located within the village of Cabrera de Mar, in a parcel that until 1997 had agricultural industry The excavations uncovered a public bath, a resi-dential area and a potter oven, with a chronology that goes from II BC to 80/70 a.

The aim of the intervention is to adapt the archaeological site for public visits, so they can highlight the archaeologi-cal findings, enhance its equity and improve casings exca-vated structures to ensure their preservation. The proposal should allow future excavations that have yet to be carried out in the field and contribute to the enhancement of the remains by the musealization of the site.

The importance of the urban image of the proposal, studying its viewing from the outside and the use of new technologies as a platform for release of the site, configure the other relevant features.

The new space of the designer Isabel de Pedro was loca-ted in a place with a long tradition related to art and fas-hion at the Rambla de Catalunya. Joan Prats moved part of the facade and interior equipment from Ferran Street and adapted it to the new location. As for their suitability as an art gallery, the bill was commissioned to Josep Lluís Sert and Jaume Freixa (which were finalizing the draft for the Miró Foundation in Barcelona).

The new proposal raises adequacy of minimum interven-tion, aimed at maintaining continuous reading of space. The new application combines the previous two, first fashion collection and then the art gallery. All equipment is resolved by following an exhibition concept, the minimum possible elements to meet the functional requirements, and the logic of reversibility of any proposed intervention. Fashion collections and art collections will change, kee-ping the dynamic and mutable space character.

We face the competition as an opportunity not only to de-fine a museum proposal, but also an opportunity to return the building to the memory and today citizens, multiplying the narrative effects (scientific, historical, epic, teaching ...) of museographical content. We understand that the building is the central and most important part of the Museum. Museum visits must begin by recognizing and interpreting the place. A place that is not only stone, but above all it is a witness of an intense process of transformation of the society of his time. Our proposal therefore is based on the potential of the building itself, understanding that this is the jewel of the collection, as well as one of the heritage sites most consistent and least known of the city of Barcelona. An undulating mu-seum threadlike structure and a transparent screen that grows and colonizes the space is proposed, while it can accommodate all types of content (physical and virtual). The system is completely reversible and does not endorse or modify in any way the structural and spatial system of the nave.

The cold room was located in the underground of the square of the Church of Sant Cugat Sesgarrigues. Its type can be linked with the vernacular architecture, and it’s difficult to date. The space was constructed with simple excavations of argillaceous grounds, cohesive enough, becoming a place of storage of foods with the right condi-tions of temperature and moisture for their conservation.

We used traditional materials such as bricks and lime mortar, to configure the new scale and access tunnel, and have made clay finishings to refer the space that you arrive. These materials have good aging in ambient mois-ture conditions that will have in these spaces. The lighting raises minimal, and the original spatial feeling is recovered with archaeological excavation to define the elevation of historical use and volumetric reconstruction of the fall vault cold room

The Albarrana tower of Odena’s Castle is dated to the early eleventh century, and is one of its best preserved remains.

The Servei de Patrimoni de la Diputació de Barcelona has restored twice this building: once in 1986 to make a general intervention and again in1999-2003 to consolidate its plaster stone basis.

The project makes a new staircase to allow access from the base of the tower to its postern. It is placed against the walls, behind the tower, in order not to make a visual impact. This new staircase uses contemporary language and materials, clearly distinct from the original. It arises as a self-supporting element, which relies on a solid base which contains the first section of stairs. It also anchors minimally at the tower walls.

Boixadors Castle is located on the top of a hill, and the site is composed of different elements surrounded by a perimeter in which various remains of walls are guessed. The chronology goes from X to XIX centuries.

The Heritage Servei de Patrimoni de la Diputació de Barcelona had worked on it several times since 1971, carrying out numerous studies, archaeological research and some interventions of consolidation and adaptation for provisional public visits.

The proposal of enhancement and the whole castle mu-sealization want to make all its elements as comprehensive as possible for the general public.

The heritage site is part of the electricity generating system built in the early XX S, which starts in the lake area located at the head of the valley, and continues with the transport system of energy to the metropolitan area of Barcelona - where was the great industrial and urban concentration of the time. The draft musealization of the enclosure of the hydroelec-tric plant is part of a global project to restore the industrial heritage of the Vall Fosca, and complete other actions already initiated previously. It is one of the sites of the Territorial System mNACTEC.The proposal is based on three basic concepts: ensure the safety of visitors - the industrial plant is in service - recover and add value to the various original features that remain scattered in the field, and get some museographi-cal supports unified under a common language performan-ces. The climatic conditions of the area (high mountains) have been determining when materially define the items exposed to weather.

The 2007 exhibition is a tribute to the period from 1972 to 1979 exhibitions held in the historic Sala Tres from Sa-badell, a space where took place alternative proposals of young artists in the late 70s. We get back together works of artists such as Benet Ferrer, Alfons Borrell, Fina Miralles, García-Sevilla, Francisco Abad, Pep Ferrer, Eulalia Grau ... product of a particular time when the creative act was con-sidered an act of resistance to the conventions (bourgeois) established.

The ensemble of jewelry that had configured the Gothic presbitery of the Cathedral of Girona is the most important example in statewide (and probably in Europe). It consists of a baldachin of silver sail shaped, an altarpiece and three processional crosses (two had been the subject of this restoration). All pieces are contemporaries and date from the fourteenth century. The restoration project, drawn from the IPCE (Ministry of Culture) provides for the intervention in the ensemble but also for the comprehensive documen-tation of the whole process. Our participation has been to give graphic support to restorers in phases of documentation and intervention by work constructively conceptualization, vector maps and implementation of R & D for mapping of damage. We have also developed a 15-minute video and divulga-tion material of the intervention, with the presence of the whole team involved, where you can see the most impor-tant moments.
