COMPANY
Almost a century of constant evolution at the service of industries.
The value of a company is also measured against its history.
And Mattei is now about to celebrate its 100th anniversary.
Founded in 1919 by Enea Mattei, it immediately specialised
in designing and manufacturing air compressors. Mattei
stood out for its constant innovation, which contributed to
shaping the very history of the sector.
The invention in 1958 of the first rotary vane compressor
with an electric motor was emblematic of this process: a
revolutionary intuition, less noise, more reliable and durable,
lower maintenance and operating costs, safer.
Ever since, Mattei has committed itself to developing this
technology and, at the same time, has devoted growing
attention to other aspects increasingly important for users,
such as high efficiency and saving energy.
This was the start of the history of Ing. Enea Mattei.

TECHNOLOGY
The revolutionary vane technology of Mattei compressors.
QUIETNESS
OPERATION
The vane compressor is a volumetric rotary compressor
consisting of a stator, with a rotor rotating inside it. The
rotor is mounted eccentrically and is tangential to it.
The rotor is fitted with longitudinal grooves where the
vanes slide. The vanes are kept together with the stator
by centrifugal force. Thanks to its simple constructional
design, the rotary vane compressor has a number of
benefits. The first is its greater volumetric performance,
as the vanes are constantly in contact with the inner
surface of the stator. Thanks to a continuous oil film, their
are perfectly airtight, with no leaks along the sides.
VERSATILE, SAFE AND QUIET
Mattei offers the world's widest range of lubricated rotary
vane compressors. Mattei compressors can be easily
fitted on existing systems and customised to meet the
most complex of requirements.
Thanks to their original design and special coupling
between the motor shaft and rotor, Mettei compressors
are extremely compact, simple to install and carry.
The low rotation speed and small number of moving
components mean the machine's operation is safe and
quiet.
ACTION
7
RELIABLE AND CONVENIENT
Mattei compressors operate, on average, for 100,000
hours without requiring work on metal parts. Excellent
performance deriving from the simple design of the
apparatus, meaning that the stator never comes into
direct contact with the rotor or the vanes. Moreover, the
small number of components reduces maintenance work
and resulting costs. Maintenance costs throughout the
life of a Mattei compressor are, on average, 50% lower
compared to traditional screw compressors.
HIGHLY EFFICIENT
The typical geometry of Mattei compressors ensures
greater airtightness.
Its low rotation speed, up to 1,000 rpm, and the 1:1 ratio
between the speed of the motor and the pumping unit
mean top efficiency and low energy consumption.
Plus, Mattei compressors provide dry, clean air with no
residue. This is an essential feature in improving the
efficiency and reliability of systems on which they are
fitted and in reducing the relative maintenance costs.

CASE HISTORYMECHANICAL SECTOR
BESSELING GROUPMattei, when the purity of air makes a difference.
Besseling Group is one of the world's leading manufactur-
ers making machinery that creates ideal and customised
modified atmospheres to preserve food, such as fruit and
vegetables. Two types of technology have been employed:
they are both based on reducing the amount of oxygen there
is, with the aim of preventing oxidation, which causes the
physiological process of decay in products. The result is a
longer shelf life, all to the benefit of the supply chain and the
quality for the end consumer. “Our Ultra Low Oxygen oxygen
ensures a top quality atmosphere where the concentration
of oxygen has been reduced to the absolute minimum,” says
Andrè Van Dienst, Sales Executive at Besseling Group.
If Besseling Group is currently a leading company in the food
preserving sector, this is also because of a decision that has
always characterised the strategy of the Besseling family:
providing high quality and highly efficient machinery and
components.
To ensure the maximum efficiency of its machinery, one of
the main needs of the Besseling Group is to create an atmo-
sphere with the lowest possible level of impurities and con-
densation. This is also achieved by choosing compressors
that meet these quality standards. “Mattei proved to be the
ideal partner for the supply of compressed air. The quality
of Mattei compressors is
indeed a guarantee for
us,” added Andrè Van Di-
enst. “Thanks to Mattei's
technology, oil residue and
contaminating particles in
general are kept to a min-
imum and this helps guar-
antee extremely high air
quality levels.”
“We have been working

9
with Mattei for 20 years now”, continued Andrè
Van Dienst, “and I think that the soundness of this
relationship not only depends on shared guiding
principles, but also on our common experience
in running a family business, where personal
commitment and working towards objectives is in
our blood.”
“Every year we provide Besseling Group with tens
of compressors, which become part of the core of
the machinery the company makes,” says Stefano
Presotto, Export Area Manager at Mattei, adding
that “Nearly all
these are ERC
500 and ERC
1000, two of
the best-selling
models from
our Classic
Series, with power values between 4 and 22
kW and air delivery from 0.49 to 3.75 m3/min: a
guarantee in terms of air quality and reliability
even for prolonged use.”
“We have been working with Mattei for 20 years now. The solidity of this relationship depends, along with sharing the same principles, on our shared experience in family-run companies, where personal commitment and focus on the goal are part of the company's DNA.”
Thanks to Mattei's technology, oil residue and contaminating particles in general are kept to a minimum.
The benefit of an investment that pays
back for itself over time.
TECHNOLOGYAND EFFICIENCY
RELIABILITY
11
“Nowadays, saving energy is more of a need
than a technological option. The EU set a 20%
reduction in consumption by 2020. Italy has
signed up to this commitment, so being part of
the EU implies complying with this target. In this
sense, manufacturers working in the
compressed air sector are working on
research and are developing solutions
to pursue these efficiency parameters.
And Mattei, with its rotary vane
compressors, is at the forefront.”
These are the words of Prof. Roberto
Cipollone, engineering lecturer at the
University of Aquila. An expert in the
field, he has been working with Mattei
on improving energy efficiency since
2002.
“In terms of quantity, you can say that 2.5 % of
overall electrical consumption is associated with
the production of compressed air: this means a
global consumption of 450 billion kWh (2011 data).
Reaching the target of a 20% reduction would lead
to energy savings of 90 billion kWh,
equal to the output of 70,000*90/140
MW of wind energy systems or
25,000*90/140 MW of biomass
systems. Therefore it's a significant
contribution”. In this regard, there are
a number of benefits with the rotary
vane technology developed by Mattei:
“The various utilities require variable air
delivery values (which depend on the
use of compressed air) and sometimes
the demand drops off drastically:
Nowadays, saving energy is more of a need than a technological option and Mattei, with its rotary vane compressors, is at the forefront.

TARGET TO REDUCE CONSUMPTION AS REQUIRED BY THE EUBY 2020
Little maintenance and a sharp reduction in friction means reducing the power absorbed by the shaft and, therefore, electricity.
turning the machine on and off produces inefficiencies and very
inefficient operating transients from an energy point of view.
Vane compressors require decidedly short times to become
fully functional, have more contained rotating masses, are not
affected by thermal dilatation of the rotor during operation, so
there is no need for particularly heavy-duty or critical supports
to hold the shaft. Thanks to all these aspects, they require very
little maintenance. Vane compressors also have the benefit of
a sharp reduction in friction, which means reducing the power
absorbed by the shaft and, therefore, electricity. The layer
of oil placed between the vane's top surface and side and
the machine's “covers” is very effective in reducing air leaks
between the compartments, thereby generating a very high
volumetric output. The air compressed in a compartment, does
not leak towards adjacent vanes (towards the ones with lower
pressure values), so leaks are further reduced.”
“Among volumetric rotary machines, on some power ranges, vane machines have benefits associated with energy absorption, the extremely low vibrations and noise, the use of technologies that allow for more efficient operation of the machines with partial load.”

CASE HISTORYRECYCLING
LERMA GOMMEMattei's efficiencyat the service ofthe process torebuild tyres.
The tyre recycling sector is attracting
growing interest, in the light of ever
increasing attention on the environment
and a sustainable way of managing
waste. Used tyres are indeed difficult
to dispose of. It takes about 100 years
for them to deteriorate once they have
been buried in a landfill. Rebuilding
them means doubling their life, thereby
slowing down the rate of disposal for
these products.
Lerma Gomme has
been operating in this
sector since 1986 and,
with its plant in Silvano
d’Orba near Alessandria
and its three direct
c u s t o m e r s u p p o r t
centres, it is one of the
main tyre reconstruction
companies in north-west
Italy. “All of our tyres
are rebuilt with a high
performing mix. Thanks to our work
method and experience gained over
25 years, we can offer a guarantee
for our rebuilt products that is equal
to the guarantee for new tyres,” says
Claudio Arecco, one of the founders
still at the helm of Lerma Gomme. The
process to rebuild them is particularly
complex. The vulcanisation stage is
fundamental. After the carcass has
been scraped and attached to the new
tread, it is placed in a high temperature
press, so that the tread merges with
the cover and the geometry of the
established design is reproduced.
“moulding is a particularly important
stage in the tyre rebuilding process,”
says Claudio Arecco. “To ensure
everything works at its best, a supply
of quality compressed
air is required. Moreover,
we need solid machines
that can cope with the
many hours of work
needed by the process.”
Based on these needs,
Lerma Gomme decided
to use Mattei as its
compressed air partner:
“We already had one of
Mattei's compressors
in the company,” says
Claudio Arecco, adding that “precisely
because we were very pleased with
its performance, when we needed to
plan the purchase of a new machine,
we chose Mattei's new ERC 22 HH,
a sturdy and reliable compressor
designed to operate continuously and
whose size is suitable for our needs.”

1,000RPM
For Mattei, sustainability is not just a
fashionable slogan. It is the result of
a commitment in terms of research
to make efficient and technologically
intelligent products. An example is
offered by OPTIMA, designed to ad-
just its operation to the load profile
required by the network. This can be
done thanks to Mattei's
special inverter managed
via the Maestro XS elec-
tronic controller. The latter
lets you vary the motor's
rotation speed, thereby ad-
justing the air delivery sup-
plied by the compressor to
the value actually reques-
ted. Potential energy sav-
ings can reach up to 35%.
With compressed air de-
mand between 100% and 40%, the
compressor's rotation speed reaches
maximum efficiency levels, with a
definitely lower energy consumption
compared with traditional inverter
systems. Environmental sustainab-
ility is also one of the strong suits of
the compressors that make up the
MAXIMA series, designed for those
who need a constant, even supply of
compressed air throughout the day.
Once again fitted with the Maestro XS
electronic controller and energy-sav-
ing electric motors with high perform-
ance output, these compressors have
a cooling system consisting
of an electric fan with dual
speed that adjusts to heat
changes. It can also keep
the internal temperature
constant by increasing or
reducing the flow of cooling
air. Moreover, the Maxima
110 and Maxima 160 mod-
els are fitted with two sep-
arate compression units,
both rotating at low speed
and controlled by a single high effi-
ciency motor. Maxima compressors
can be equipped with a kit to recover
the thermal energy produced at the
compression stage to heat water for
industrial or domestic use.

CASE HISTORYTRANSPORT SECTOR
RAMPINIMattei's quality and quietness for eco-friendly buses for urban transport.
It has been called
Electric Alè and it
is the pride and joy
of Carlo Rampini
SpA, a leading
company in the design and production
of medium-sized, eco-friendly buses
for urban transport. Launched on the
market at the end of 2009, Electric
Alè is an interesting product in its
category for its transport capacity and
operating time. Thanks to its large-
capacity electric batteries, it can travel
150 kilometres in town traffic at two-
thirds of the load with
just one recharge,
covering one complete
work shift for an urban
bus. “We secured
some important
contracts in Europe,"
says Giuseppe Lepore,
Marketing Director at
Carlo Rampini SpA,
adding that "In Nice
we provided both
electric and diesel-
powered vehicles, with
identical features. In
comparison, Electric
Alè is much more
performing in terms of
reduction of consumption, noise levels
and maintenance costs. The council's
public transport company in Vienna
purchased 12 vehicles.”
All pneumatic systems fitted on Electric
Alè are fed by Mattei compressors.
Mattei's vane technology not only
ensures quality compressed air, but
also low noise levels thanks to the low
rotation speed and limited number of
moving components. “The quietness
of the vehicle when it is running is a
top prerogative on hybrid and electric
vehicles,” says Giuseppe Lepore.
“This feature convinced us to choose
Mattei's compressors to feed the
pneumatic systems on our buses.”
The RVM range stands out for
its compact size and for being
lightweight, which makes installation
easier - another strong suit for Mattei's
compressors. “In recent years we
have provided Carlo Rampini SpA
with some 50 RVM15
compressors," says
Flavio Molinari, Sales
Director Italy at Ing.
Enea Mattei SpA,
adding that "This
model can provide
the amount of air
required (150 litres
of air per minute) to
feed the pneumatic
systems, including the
braking system and
suspension and, at the
same time, it adapts
to the compact size of
the Rampini buses.”
“The range of RVM
compressors is specifically devoted to
use on vehicles. The careful approach,
down to the smallest detail, the high
design and assembly standards,
the quality of the components used
and the advanced technology of the
mechanical processing currently place
Mattei compressors at the top of its
category,” says Flavio Molinari.

CURTI RISOMattei: efficiencyand sustainability for the agri-foodsector.
For 140 years, this brand has been synonymous
with one of the quality ingredients in Italian food. In
its plant in Valle Lomellina near Pavia, Curtiriso, one
of the leading companies in Europe with a capacity
of around 150,000 tonnes a year of processed
raw material, develops its entire manufacturing
process by focusing on quality, food safety and
environmental protection. “Curti has always
devoted great attention to the quality of the product
along every stage of production”. Since 1996, the
company has made considerable investments to
produce clean energy. The thermal power station,
designed to produce power from plant biomass or
by combining these materials with processing by-
products, is iconic of this move.
This has been the setting for the partnership between
Cutiriso and Mattei for over 30 years. The current

set of machines (about 10 of them)
includes a compressor with high energy
efficiency levels like the Maxima 55 and
Optima 75, and others from the AC
series. “We use Mattei's compressors in
all production departments: from the rice
mill to the packaging department and
the thermal power station,” says Alessio
Varese, Business and Subcontractor
coordinator and Contract Manager at
Curtiriso. He adds that “The versatility
of Mattei's equipment allows us to
adjust the supply of compressed air
depending on the specific needs of the
various departments. The ratio between
performance and consumption is truly
exceptional.”
The low rotation speed of Mattei's
compressors ensures low sound
pollution levels and less mechanical
stress: “The reliability and quietness
