Here we are with another year of paintball ahead of us and things

have defintately changed since Phoenix of last year. NPPL is

gone and the magazine who had paid me to be here last time is

no longer around. I felt it was time to give something back to the

paintball community and an online feature just seemed right. I’ve

made one in the past and with this being the second go around

hopefully it will end up better than the first. I’ve tried to give it

some variety and make it not just a bunch of photos thrown down

randomly. Hope you like it and understand the slight delay of its

release. Thanks to all the players who helped me make this thing,

to Rob for giving me a place to sleep and to the Drew and Catfish

for the good times.

HeLLo agaIN,

Top 5 What Not:1.) Name the top 5 snake players to film. - Angel Fragoza - Lucian Blackburn - Brandon Short - Federov - Oliver Lang2.) Name five good things about being a paintball videographer. - Catching people for the “Derder short bus.” - Hanging out at the Derder booth when all the teams that lost show up to “hydrate.” - The satisfaction of knowing you got the shot perfect. - Messing with Catfish. - Quietly judging everyone with MattD.3.) Top five tournaments you’ve been to. - PSP World Cup 2006. Most fun I’ve ever had. OG Sinister! - PSP World Cup 2008. Mini golf madness. - PSP Chicago 2008 - PSP Vegas 2006 - XPSL Fresno 2007. Manatees?!4.) Paintball players you looked up to playing. - Billy Wing - Yosh Rau - Oliver Lang - Ryan Williams - Tyler Humphrey5.) The five coolest media people - MattD - Brandon Showers - Derder Rob - Chris Dilts - Catfish...does he count..?

Drew Cusick: Derder Videographer

1.) Name five players you look up to.The best player in the world Steven Pitts,

Raney, Winston, my dad and Greg Pauley, any one that big and still can play that well

always make my list.

2.)Five sucky things that can happen at a tournament.

Getting your gun jacked at the airport, having to deal with your team constantly

getting penalties, the worse taking second place I hate that, losing then having a 6

hour flight home, getting home and having to explain to everyone why you lost.

3.) Five things you do other than paintballPlay adult softball, go to the gym, school,

play basketball, watch the Lakers, Kobe baby.

4.) The five coolest tournaments you’ve been to.

World cups are always the best, I have been to three of them. HB 07 was a great tourney and Jacksonville 08, first pro win

with Aftermath.

5.) The first five guns you owned/used for a while.

The first gun I had was a dumb SOB Bruiser, I don’t think they’re around now.

Then I had a G7 Intimidator, then like three different angles and then a proto matrix.

Canada’s home grown lizard Johnny Thompson has started off the 2009 season with a bang. Slamming into the snake game after game and running down the field to stab victim after victim Johnny earned his keep. Impacts snake superstar Justin Cornell has changed rolls and now runs the dorito side of the field. That leaves some big shoes to fi l l, but Thompson made it look easy. True they didn’t make it to Sunday, but Impact looked real fluid by the end of the tournament. Huntington is their next stop and maybe we’l l see a Cornell / Thompson snake combo. We can only hope.

while I was playing a local bCPPl tournament, “brawl for

it all” I looked up in the stands to see bart yachimec and

Josh davey gesture me to come see them . when I went

to meet them they told me they would like me to tryout for

Impact in edmonton. bart and Josh saw something in me

and now I’m playing with my brothers on Thunderdome!. my

practice routine is twice a week here at snipers Paintball in

Chilliwack, when an event is coming up I fly up to edmonton for

practice and after that a two day practice against a Pro team

in the states.

do you PreFer seven man or x-ball, exPlaIn wHy

you PreFer one over THe oTHer?

seven man is great, I love getting down the snake, sneaky like

a ninja, shooting a bunch of people in the head and hearing the

crowds reaction.x-ball is sick I love the feeling of playing in overtime

or having it be a very close match.

“This year he has really stepped up to the plate...”

“...and played a big role on the snake side.”-Josh davey

Page 13: Matt Dawson Paintball Feature

Who do you look up to in paintball?

kevin “yoda” Mulrooney, anthony Faiazza, Colin beitel, and everyone on my team, all of their talent inspires me to be the

best i’m capable of being.hoW’s the paintball CoMpetition in Canada?

although in Canada there isn’t a large player base, there is definitely a lot of talent but, i don’t see Canada catching up to

the american caliber any time soon.

What do you Want to get out oF paintball and Where Would you like to see yourselF in ten years?

right now i’m playing for the glory and the love of the game. hopefully in the future i will be able to make enough income to have a career and continue in this sport that i love so much. as far as where i will be ten years from now, i hope it will be making a decent

living playing the sport that i’m so passionate about.

Page 14: Matt Dawson Paintball Feature

Are there Any other sports you plAy or hobbies you enjoy?

the only other serious sport i play is beer pong. Working out at the gym with jeremy and tyler is a lot of fun too and i can’t forget

GreG Pauley &

Page 26: Matt Dawson Paintball Feature

Hailing from Omaha Nebraska they’ve steadily pushed there way from Division 3 to Semi Pro while winning everything in between. Playing as a family and relying on friendships that go back far beyond paintball, the boys of Vicious truly are the definition of a heart driven team. You won’t find any superstars or ego driven players, just a bunch of kids supported by: family, friends, and one super dedicated coach/ player, Greg Pauley. Most of the team lives with in a five-mile radius of each other and are always hanging out; not quite like the Dynasty house of old, but close enough. Omaha Nebraska is not what could be called a hot bed of tournament paintball. Vicious has only their lower ranked Division II team, Dsspaintball.com for practice. The closest team of Division One or higher is Aftershock eight hours away and they have never bothered to make the long drive. For those of us who live in Southern California this can be hard to wrap are paintball brains around, we are surrounded by high ranked teams that are more than willing to smash your team in the ground, but for Vicious dedication has become their main tool for success. Playing two or three times a week is the norm for these guys and not only does this sharpen their skills, but helps them gel as a team. Probably the biggest advantage over many other teams is they have Pauley; any time you see a young group of kids quickly move up the Divisional ladder, there is always a serious coach at the end of the line. Pauley’s ability to coach has lead him through such teams as SD Aftermath and St. Louis Avalanche and it just proves he’s been around the block enough times to understand every aspect of the sport. He started the team in 2003 and has kept with it until this day. Pauley has had many players pass through his program and into the Pro scene making him a true ambassador for paintball.

Team Vicious“The original kids are the ones who drive this

team, they’re the heart and soul of it.”

“Pretty much our only real practice is our Division ii team...”

Page 27: Matt Dawson Paintball Feature

Throughout the prelims they were able to stay undefeated and gave a good beat down to XSV earlier in the tournament. This definitely gave them the confidence for the rest of their matches, but more so gave XSV a major wake up call. Once out of prelims and heading into Sunday in the number one position, it was time to bring out the red jerseys. Only worn once they’ve made the top four, these jerseys have to be earned every event. Left out of the gear bags, they stay in the hotel until Sunday when they have earned the right to wear them.

“We have this thing called Rule 99...

...and these kids have real good memories.”

“Roll your guns, make the shots count, play as a team.”

“It’s another day, another level and everybody has to step their game up.”

Page 29: Matt Dawson Paintball Feature

Sunday came and the finals were set between themselves and Rich Telfords XSV. After losing to Vicious on Friday XSV began to find their stride and Rich’s young players started performing. The match saw each team going back and forth with the lead, but slowly as the match wore on XSV started to pull ahead. Struck with several penalties Vicious could not recover. Time had run out the score was left XSV 6 Vicious 5, leaving the Nor Cal boys to celebrate. You can’t expect to go into your first semi-pro X-ball event and beat a Pro team like XSV can you? Well they tried and came up just short. Lessons have been learned and strategies may change, but their attitude will not. They will come back at MAO knowing they’ve trained the hardest and deserve it more than anyone else. They will come expecting to leave Sunday as champions, and if they lose there, they will come back at the next event to try again. That’s how Pauly trains them, that’s who Vicious is.

“Ever since I started the team I’ve always wanted a private label gun and Eclipse gave us that opportunity.”

“The layout at Phoenix was really good since it was a fast paced field...”

“I got the whole team sick with the flu...”

“...you had to take ground quick if you wanted to win the point...”

-Alex Goldman

Page 34: Matt Dawson Paintball Feature
Page 35: Matt Dawson Paintball Feature

“The team didnt practice before Phoenix...”

“The teams goals are to help promote paintball...”

“Overall we want to get players excited about paintball and help grow the sport.”

-Rusty Glaze

Page 36: Matt Dawson Paintball Feature

“The Ironmen played great this event.”

“If we play up to par then we’re going to win every event.”

“I got ejected out of the finals, which wasn’t very funny.”

-Brandon Short

“The limited roster is good and bad.”

“It forced us to let go of a few great players...”

...on the other hand you get more playing time.”

-Scott Kemp

Page 37: Matt Dawson Paintball Feature

“I consider X-Factor a top 4 team and we played nothing like that at all.”

“I hit the $1000 jackpot in wheel of fortune...”

“...now I don’t have to move out of the house of troubled youth.”-Grayson Goff

Page 38: Matt Dawson Paintball Feature
Page 39: Matt Dawson Paintball Feature

“...the fire has settled down and all the players out of the midwest have gained some experience...”

“We have a solid team that has the drive to compete.”

“It’s cliche to say look for big things from Shock in ‘09, but words are cheap and were all up to showing everyone.”

-Drew Templeton

Page 40: Matt Dawson Paintball Feature

12.5 BPSThoughTs & CommenTs

“...it brings out more aggression and attack.”

“...it is just a little bit harder to be a big guy and stick back and depend on your gun.”

-Raney stanczak

“As far as I’m concerned, if you put the paint in the place they are running to, then 12.5 does the trick.”

-Drew Templeton

“The lowered rate of fire isn’t really a big deal.”

“Paintball is paintball.”-Brandon short

“...having a slower bps makes it easier to take more risks off the break.”

-Billy Bernachia

“It makes it harder for the fat old men to shoot me on the break.”

“...people are getting so good at shooting, if the bps was still at 15, I don’t think anyone would get

past the back center.”

-scott Kemp

“I hope they also get rid of the mode and make it semi only.”

-Rusty glaze

“honestly, players need to get more skill and less dependency on technology.”

“The new rate of fire is noticably slower...”

-Justin swartzch

“...doesn’t feel all that different for me actually. I do miss being able to put a few extra balls on people though.”

-Bobby Avilles

“Just keep it at 15 bps...

-Alex goldman“... I like to bonusball people.”

The Philadelphia American’s have

been at this X-ball thing for some

time. Winning the 2006 Texas Open

in freezing temperatures was their last

victory. Near the end of last year Philly

really got things rolling and now it has

finally paid off. Beating down all who

stood in their way, this victory certainly

was not handed to them. Congrats to

Philly and hopefully their success can

continue throughout 2009.
