** The following section may contain instructions for servicing various components of your vehicle. These arean overview of the process that will be performed by a skilled technician in our shop. They are not intended tobe a guide for a “do-it-yourself” operation.

The ability to drive safely interests all of us. Having a clean windshield is a necessity forsafe driving. Most driving decisions are dependent on the driver having a clear view ofthe road ahead. Worn or torn wiper blades do not effectively clean the windshield, and adirty windshield can obstruct the drivers view, possibly resulting in an accident.

Significance:

Impaired view fromworn wiper blades

New wiper blades

AI-20

Remove the wiper blade inserts from the wiper arms following the vehiclemanufacturer's instructions (found in the owner's guide). Install new wiper blade insertsonto the wiper arms. Thoroughly clean the windshield.

Operation Description:

Windshield wiper blade replacement

Advantage:

Most wiper blade manufacturers recommend replacing your wiper blades or wiper bladeinserts every 6 months or 6,000 miles. Something as simple and as inexpensive asreplacing your windshield wiper blades will make your driving experience for you andyour family a safer one.

Your vehicle's tires are the only connection between your vehicle and the road. Safevehicle operation depends on your tires being in good condition. If your tires areneglected, the tread can wear completely away, leaving the tire bald and often exposingthe steel cords. Not only is this condition dangerous, it is also unlawful in many states.Tires with an abnormal tread wear pattern can cause the vehicle to shimmy and vibrate, and can adversely affect the manner in which your vehicle performs. A tire with anabnormal tread wear pattern will no longer contact the road the way that it was designedto, and this condition can be dangerous, especially during adverse road conditions.

Significance:Signs of irregular tire

wear

New tire

AI-23

Raise the vehicle using an automotive lift. Remove the rim and tire assembly from thevehicle. Remove the tire from the rim. Install a new valve stem assembly. Install a newtire on the rim. Inflate the tire to recommended pressure. Balance the tire and rimassembly on a computer-aided dynamic tire balancing machine. Reinstall the tire and rimassembly onto the vehicle. Torque the wheel retaining nuts to the vehicle manufacturer’sspecifications.

Operation Description:

Tire replacement

Advantage:

Replacing worn tires is part of vehicle maintenance that is necessary to ensure that yourdriving experience is as safe as possible. Besides the obvious safety benefits, tires thatare in good condition and properly inflated to the correct air pressure can increase theoverall fuel economy and help provide a comfortable ride.

A dirty or clogged air filter can affect the fuel economy and overall vehicle performance. Both diesel and gasoline powered engines are designed to maintain a specific air-fuelratio. A restricted air filter can affect the way the engine maintains the correct air-fuelmixture. If the air filter is restricted, the fuel mileage and overall vehicle drivability candeteriorate rapidly.

Significance:Dirty and restricted air

filter

New air filter

AI-28

Remove the air filter element from the air filter housing. Clean the air filter housing andinspect the fresh air duct hose for damage, dirt, or obstructions. Inspect the warm airintake hose for signs of deterioration. Install a new filter element, and then reinstall theair filter housing access panel.

Operation Description:

Air filter replacement

Advantage:

Replacing your air filter element is a quick and effective way to keep your enginerunning at its peak performance. A clean air filter helps your engine work moreefficiently by letting the airflow get to the engine with no restrictions. A clean air filtercan also prolong the life of your engine.

Lighting systems are required on all vehicles by both state and federal laws. Lights are amajor contributor to your safety, not only by allowing you to see the road in front of youat night, but also by allowing other vehicles to see you. The value of having fully-functioning lights far outweighs the cost of replacing burned-out light bulbs. The cost isnormally less than the inconvenience and can also prevent you from receiving a trafficcitation.

Significance:

Burned-out light bulbs

New light bulb

AI-41

Perform a function test of entire lighting system. Visually inspect the headlamps, highand low beams, hazard signals, turn indicators, parking lights and brake lights. Removeand install new light bulbs as needed to repair inoperative vehicle lamps.

Operation Description:

Bulb replacement

Advantage:

The vehicle lighting system is an important safety feature of your car. Replacing burnedout light bulbs is an inexpensive way to ensure that your driving experience is a safe one.

The vehicle's wheel bearings allow the wheels to rotate with low resistance and friction.Modern wheel bearings are usually tapered roller bearings that are matched to aprecision-machined race. High quality wheel bearing grease is used so that the greasecan stand up to the high temperatures generated from today’s aggressive disk brakesystems. Some wheel bearings are serviceable and can be repacked with grease, whileothers are non-serviceable, or sealed units. A worn out wheel bearing will usually makea lot of resonating noise that will transfer to the interior of the vehicle. If a worn outwheel bearing is neglected, it can seize up, causing your vehicle to lose control, or beunable to move. When this happens, it is likely that the seized bearing has causedirreparable damage to the spindle or hub, resulting in an expensive repair bill, and a lotof vehicle down time.

Significance:

Wheel bearing failure

New wheel bearing

AI-45

Raise the vehicle on a professional automotive lift. Remove the rim and tire assemblyfrom the vehicle. Remove the wheel bearings according to the vehicle manufacturer’srepair instructions. Remove the damaged wheel bearing. Pack the wheel bearing with ahigh quality wheel bearing grease recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. Reinstallthe wheel bearing, replacing the wheel seal as necessary. Adjust the wheel bearing hold-down nut according the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications. Reinstall the wheel andtorque the lug nuts using a torque wrench to the factory specification. Note that somenew vehicles come with a sealed bearing and hub assembly that does not allow forgrease to be added. In these cases, the assembly must be replaced if wear is present.

Operation Description:

Wheel bearing replacement

Advantage:

Replacing a worn out wheel bearing is an essential repair to ensure that your vehicle issafe to drive. Aside from the safety issues, a neglected wheel bearing can damage othercomponents of your drivetrain, resulting in expensive repairs.

Clean vs. dirty, acidiccoolant (antifreeze)

Coolant flush equipment

AI-59

Some coolant may be in such poor condition that a coolant flush is necessary to removethe corrosion and deposits that were created in the engine and the radiator. If so, anapproved coolant removal and cycling machine is required for this procedure. Ourtrained technician will connect the vehicle to a state-of-the-art machine and add a cleanerto safely remove rust, sludge and scale deposits. Once the system has been cleaned, thetechnician will install a new coolant-and-water mix, along with a conditioner to protectthe cooling system. Once this is finished, the engine will be allowed to run until itreaches normal operating temperature and then the fluid will be checked and adjusted ifnecessary.

Operation Description:

The engine’s coolant pulls the heat from the engine and then dissipates the heat when itenters the radiator. The engine's cooling system is a complex system comprised of manycomponents and materials. The most common materials used are aluminum, plastic, copper, brass, rubber, and steel. The engine coolant must be compatible with all of them. The engine coolant is designed to transfer heat, stop corrosion, and provide a lubricantfor the water pump seal. Old antifreeze can become acidic. The combination of acidicfluid and the dissimilar alloys in the cooling system actually creates a crude battery. Thiscondition can cause accelerated corrosion of these materials. Changing the coolantaccording to a preventative maintenance schedule will prevent this acidic condition, andhelp prevent corrosion, and expensive future repairs.

Significance:

Clean vs. dirty, acidiccoolant (antifreeze)

Coolant flush equipment

AI-59

Advantage:

Replacing the engine coolant as a part of a scheduled maintenance program is essentialto your vehicle's reliability and longevity. New engine coolant has a non-acidic, non-corrosive PH level that will not destroy your cooling system components. The use ofproper engine coolant will help keep your engine from overheating, and can help preventthe engine from freezing during cold weather conditions.

When was the last time you had your vehicle’s transmission serviced? Have youexperienced slipping, hard shifting, or chattering? All of this can indicate that anautomatic transmission flush service is needed.

Significance:

Valve body spool withheavy build up

Valve body spool aftertransmission service

AI-60

Using a state-of-the-art machine, one of our specially trained technicians will use a safeand effective cleaner to dissolve and suspend the varnish and gums in the transmission, valve body, torque converter, pan, filter element, transmission lines, and transmissioncooler. The technician will then flush the entire unit of all old fluid and suspended debrisand install new transmission fluid of the proper specification and fortify the new fluidwith seal conditioners, oxidation inhibitors and friction modifiers. Finally, he will run thevehicle to operating temperature and ensure that the automatic transmission fluid is filledto the correct level.

Operation Description:

ATF fluid exchange without filter

Advantage:

By having your automatic transmission cleaned and its fluid replaced every 2 years or30,000 miles, you can keep the transmission running efficiently, restore transmissionfluid circulation, help prevent overheating, smooth shifting and transmission operation, and reduce transmission wear. All of this helps you avoid costly future repairs to thetransmission.

If you have experienced steering pump noises, hard or erratic steering, or pump leaks, it'sprobably time to have your vehicle’s power steering system serviced. The power steeringpump produces high pressures (between 800–2,000 lbs./400 – 1‚000 kg, depending onmodel) and high heat. Heat + pressure = fluid breakdown/failure; fluid failure = powersteering pump and/or rack failure; power steering pump and/or rack failure = costlyrepair.

Significance: Power steering spoolvalve with hardened

cracked seals

Grooves worn into thehousing by hardened

AI-62

One of our skilled technicians with specialized equipment will use a powerful cleaner todissolve and suspend the varnish and gums in your vehicle’s power steering unit andthen flush the entire unit of all old fluid and contaminants and install new high-tech fluidfor both conventional sector and rack and pinion. Finally, the technician will road testyour vehicle.

Operation Description:

Power steering fluid exchange service

Advantage:

Our power steering service will alleviate steering squeal caused by sticking valves, correct that jerky feeling on the steering wheel, help prevent fluid leaks, and reducewear.

Does your vehicle’s brake pedal feel “spongy”? Brake fluid becomes contaminated overtime and use. Heat and moisture can cause brake failure. Contaminated fluid leads toexpensive repairs.

Significance:Harmful deposits on

brake master cylinderpiston assembly

Brake fluid before andafter service

AI-63

One of our skilled technicians will check the condition of your vehicle’s brake fluid and,if necessary, remove contaminated fluid from the brake lines and master cylinder, replace the old fluid with appropriate brake fluid. The entire brake system will beinspected for leaks, master cylinder corrosion, worn pneumatic parts, harmful varnishbuild-up, broken or rusted bleeder valves, worn rotors and drums, and air in the brakelines.

Operation Description:

Brake fluid exchange service

Advantage:

Worn-out, oxidized brake fluid causes corrosion and harmful deposits and varnish buildup. A brake flush service should be performed when your brake fluid showscontamination or every 30,000 to 40,000 miles.

Problems with the tie rod ends cause changes in wheel alignment. This wheel alignmentchange causes uneven tire wear and loss of directional stability. Tie-rod ends are veryimportant parts of the front suspension. They allow movement of the suspension to occurwhen driving over bumps, and while turning. They also keep your vehicle going straightdown the highway. If a worn tie-rod end is not replaced in a timely manner, your vehiclecan become unsafe to drive. If a worn tie-rod end breaks while you are driving, you maynot be able to control or steer your vehicle, and run the risk of getting in an accident ordoing additional damage to your vehicle.

Significance:

Corroded tie-rod end

New tie-rod end

AI-101

Lift the vehicle. Remove the tie-rod end according to the vehicle manufacturer’s specificrepair information. Install the new tie-rod end. Grease the new tie-rod end as required.Reinstall the wheel and torque the lug nuts to the vehicle to the manufacturers’specifications. Perform a complete wheel alignment. Take the vehicle for a test drive.

Operation Description:

Tie-rod end replacement

Advantage:

Even with slightly worn tie-rod ends, you will wear out your tires prematurely. A vehiclewith worn out suspension components, such as tie-rods can be unsafe to drive.Maintaining your front suspension helps keep your vehicle safe and reliable.
