Uses of Math In Sports

Math is used in everything and anything, such as sport.Altough not always realized, math plays a very important

roles in sports. Could you think of playing any sportswithout maths in it? Every Sports uses numbers in some

way, whether its for scoring, detemining averages, and

many more.

Even tough computers have saved us to solve math

problem manually, its still usefull to know how to do so.Lets say, how would you know a basketball players

shooting percentage? A kind of question like that require

some basic math skill.

Uses of math in basketball are:

The measurement of the court, such as:

Measuring how far the three point line is away from the ring.

Measuring how far the foul line is away from the ring.

*All NBA (National Basketball Association) level basketball courts

have the same exact measurements. Having different measurement

may cause protest from the player. If there were different

measurements, the player may think its the standard

measurements of the court. Therefore, shooting maybe a bit too

short or a bit too far.

The scoring of basketball

"One point if a foul shot/free throw is made

"Two points for every basket(shot/lay-up/dunk) made

"Three points for every shot made outside the three-point line

*three point can be made by getting fouled whileshooting.

The amount of calories that players burn and all of that health

related stuff.

The amount of players on the team, a team should have 5

players to play and some are in the bench. If players getinjured, fouled out, or something like that, there are less

available players.

The shots that players have to timed correctly by the players to

score the ball and win the game. In other words, the timer is

very important.

Averages

Math is involved to determine the various statistics that

define a players performance on the court. Just take the

total points scores by the player in all games and divide

by total games played. Statistic categories such as

assist, rebound, blocked shots, steals, etc, are also

calculated the same way.

Percentages

Field goal shooting percentages are calculated by taking

number of shots made and divide by total shot attempted.

Shooting percentage above 50% is considered very good.

Example Rizkis shooting percentage

Shots made (s) = 8 So,

Total shots (t) = 12 A = s / t

Shooting percentage (A) = ?? = 8/12 = 2/3 = 0.66 = 66%

So rizki is a very good shooter ( )

Math is useful in baseball, as long theres a number,maths involved in it.

The scoring of baseball game

One point a player bats at home plate and must proceedcounterclockwise to first base, second base, thirdbase, and back home in order to score a run.

Knowing the players batting average

Hits made (h) = 7 So,

Total batting (t) = 20 B = h / t

Batting Average (B) = ?? = 7/20 = 0.35 = 35%

in our daily lives even whenwere doing sports without werealizing it.
