Number Sense
Number sense can refer to an “intui1ve” understanding of numbers, their magnitude, rela1onships, and how they are affected by opera1ons.
Number sense refers to a person's general understanding of number and opera1ons along with the ability to use this understanding in flexible ways to make mathema1cal judgments and to develop useful strategies for solving complex problems.
2011 research on Number Sense (2 studies: Univ. of Missouri & Johns Hopkins Univ.)
• A preschooler’s grasp of numbers predicts math performance in school years
• Early number sense is linked to formal math achievement (test scores)
• 1st graders that understand numbers, the quanGGes those numbers represent, and low level arithmeGc will have beIer success in learning mathemaGcs through the end of 5th grade
• Number Sense correlates with math tests scores through high school
Number Sense is not just…
• CounGng
• Knowing basic facts (+, ‐, x, /)
• ComputaGonal fluency
• StaGng place value
Number Sense is more deeply about…
• Comparing, ordering, and equality
• Composing and decomposing numbers
• Reasonableness, esGmaGon, reasoning
• Internalizing value, magnitude, and base 10
Everything will focus on Number Sense
