WHY WE CHOOSE SINGAPORE AS OUR CHOICE?

    Introduction

My group`s members and I have done the observation to three cities, namely

Tokyo, Singapore and Bandung. We were also given scholarships with a total of RM

150,000 per year by the government. At the same time, we are required to continue

the study in one of the cities selected for two years. This means that the scholarships

provided is RM 300,000.So, we are required to make an estimate of expenses in one

of the selected city. After we did some discussion, we have decided to continue our

study to university in Singapore and the university that best suits us is National

    University of Singapore.

    The Education

The reason why we choose National University of Singapore as our choice is

because this university is the one of best university in the world and 8th ranking in

Asian and 146th ranking in the worlds university that is why I interested to choose

this university (http://www.university-list.net/rank.htm). We think that the university can

provide a better education for us and with the ranking shown prove that this country

has high class of education for their. Furthermore, with education in Singapore, we

hope that we can get a good job in our field and provide a better medium for us to

prepare well in our job that is in Education field.

    Location

Among other reasons why we chose Singapore as our choice is because

Singapore close to our country Malaysia. For information, Singapore located at the

south of our country, Malaysia and it is near than others two countries which are

Tokyo and Bandung. This means to go to Singapore, it just takes short trip from

Kuala Lumpur compare to Tokyo and Bandung. On the other hand, we can take

public transport to get to Singapore which is a bus, taxi and flight from Kuala

Lumpur. This is different compare to Tokyo and Bandung that we needed to book

flights which are more expensive than train or bus. In the event of an emergency

such as parental illness, death of relatives and others, we can go home easily and

safely. In addition, we can also save our budget because we just need little for

  • 8/8/2019 Math Completed

    12/26

transportation expenses. This means that we can use the balance of scholarships for

    other needs.

    Living cost

Furthermore, living in Singapore can save our budget. It is because our budgetfor University fee is enough for two years study at National University of Singapore

(NUS) and we just only needed RM 60,737.08 in two years there. At the same time,

we can make a lot saving and save it in the bank. In addition, we can also use the

saving for the other convenience .For example buy books, computers and more.

Living in Singapore need a little of budget compare to Tokyo and Bandung. Even

cost living in Bandung cheaper than Singapore, but Singapore is developed

countries. In Tokyo, living cost is too high compared to Singapore. As we know,

University of Tokyo is among the best in the world but we do not have enough

money to continue our study there. It is because the University`s fee is too expensive

    and high.

    Food

Food is the one of the factor why I choose Singapore as our choice .As

Muslim, the food that we must choose must be healthy and Halal. In Singapore,

there are over 400 halal food outlets in Singapore certified by the MUIS (Islamic

Religious Council of Singapore), excluding some of the Muslim -owned outlets as it is

not compulsory for outlets to apply for the halal certificate. However, as a student we

should choose healthy food for our body. It is because we need to choose healthy

food for our bodies to be healthy, and intelligent brain. As we know, many of the

countries have various types of food that healthy but not for the Halal food. In Tokyo,

is too difficult to find halal food because the number of Muslim countries there is little

compared to other countries that Islam is minority. That is why we do not choose

Tokyo as an option because of difficulty in finding halal food and the taste of food in

Tokyo does not match the tastes of Malaysia. Most of the food in Japan is half

cooked and the seafood and it is different in Malaysia. In Malaysia, the food is

cooked thoroughly and completely cooked. For me, Singapore is the best among all

this three country that served Halal food. Because of Singapore is situated just so

near to Malaysia, we still could have Malaysian food in Singapore. There are also no

big differences in taste of Singapore food and Malaysian food. While living in

  • 8/8/2019 Math Completed

    13/26

Singapore, there is no doubt in choosing food that tastes Singapore same as in

    Malaysia.

    Language

Based on mother language factor, we know that Singapore used English as theirmain language. This is different in Tokyo and Bandung is using Japanese language

and Indonesian language for their mother language. This will help me to speak and

understand language more smoothly and effectively. If we choose Tokyo as our

choice, we need a lot of time to speak their mother language. It is because we have

never exposed to the Japanese language in our country. This will cause us to have

difficulty to interact people in Tokyo.

    Safety

    Safety in Tokyo

Tokyo is about the safest urban area imaginable. There is virtually no threat of

being mugged, assaulted or robbed, assuming one uses common sense and doesn't

go looking for trouble. This is not to say that Japan is crime free or free of violent

    crime.

Pickpockets are always a threat in crowded metropolitan areas and Tokyo is

no different. Use common sense regarding carrying cash, valuables and important

travel documents and almost all problems will be most certainly avoided. For men,

this means carrying wallets in a front pocket and for women, carrying wallets in a

sealed and secure handbag. While the lore of Japan is that a bag of cash left on a

park bench is likely to be returned (this is true) there are exceptions to this rule and

there is no value in testing it.

Burglary has become more commonplace in residential areas where it is no

longer safe to leave a home unlocked when not there. It's usually transients passing

through neighbourhoods perpetrating this sort of theft but it pays to be careful, just in

case. When staying in major hotels, the chance of theft is very slim but uses the

room safe or a safety deposit box at the front desk to store valuables.

With the small influx of undocumented foreign residents into Japan, more and

more scams and swindles are being seen in the major areas of Tokyo. Just ignore

these people and avoid any offers and en ticements you may encounter.

    Safety in Singapore

Singapore is an extremely safe city, in no small part because the justice in

Singapore can be swift and harsh. This is especially important to note, because even

relatively minor violations (such as spitting on the sidewalk) are considered fairly

serious offenses. And there are fines issued for just about any offense including

smoking in public places, jaywalking, littering and even chewing gum on the MRT.

So when visiting Singapore it is important to note the laws. Penalties for drug

offenses include the death penalty. Even shoplifting is considered a rather serious

offense in Singapore, with penalties that include lengthy prison time. Corporal

punishment may also be imposed for other lesser offenses.

It should be noted that homosexual acts are illegal in Singapore and penalties

can also include imprisonment. It is noticeable that not all prostitutes are ladies but

may include transsexuals or transvestites. These harsh punishments make

Singapore one of the safest large cities in the world to visit. Even when visiting alone

a woman can generally feel comfortable, but as with any dark street at night caution

    should be observed.

The Singapore government has also stepped up security measures following

the terrorist attacks in Bali, and remain quite committed to maintaining Singapores

reputation as a safe destination for travellers.

Although Singapore is one of the safest countries in the world, please

exercise caution and protection against your personal belongings. There are cases

where people left their belongings (bags etc) and went for a swim (Sentosa) and

later found their belongings missing. There have also been incidents of foreign

pickpocket syndicates being caught in Singapore. They pickpocket in busy town

areas and then go back to their countries.

  • 8/8/2019 Math Completed

    15/26

Have someone to look after the belongings while you are away. Use lockers if

they are available. Or ask friendly people to look after your belongings (at your own

risk! they might be foreigners or dishonest Singaporeans too). Do not expose wallets

or make belongings 'pickpocket-friendly'. These crimes are rather insignificant but its

always good to be on your alert. There are also cases where motorbikes

passenger/driver will snatch bags etc from pedestrians walking by the side of the

road. Overall, Singapore is still considered very safe compared to other parts of the

world. This is especially so because there is the death penalty for murder cases and

drug (heroine etc) trafficking/consumption. In spite of a ll of this enforcement

remember: a Low Crime Rate does not mean No Crime

    Safety in Bandung

Bandung is safer than Jakarta. Just use your common sense, stay in the

tourist area, and watch your wallet (as you should in any city you are travelling in).

There are many pickpocket around the there, so be sure of the risk.

Bandung is safe, but there are a lot of beggars. Out of kindest you may feel

obligated to help them(especially those infant beggars with their pity face and telling

you they have no money to eat. not try to entertain them because there are so many

of them, once they saw you give to someone, then the rest will start chasing and go

around you. When you take out wallet will a lot of people surrounding you, anythingcan happen. Your wallet or anything you carry with you might got snatched.

So, we choose Singapore as our choice is because safety factor. Safety is the

most important thing as a student. Singapore is an extremely safe city, in no small

part because the justice in Singapore can be swift and harsh. As we know, the

reason why we don`t choose Tokyo and Bandung as our choice is because there are

many crime occur at the Tokyo and Bandung such as pickpocket, burglary, terrorist

and many more. Pickpockets are always a threat in crowded metropolitan areas andTokyo is no different. As a precautionary measure, we dont choose Tokyo and

Bandung as our choice to avoid anything bad happen.

    Conclusion

As we note that Singapore is a peaceful and harmony country. Singapore has

a community of diverse races and religions such as Malay, Chinese, Indian, English

and Tamil. The language used in Singapore is Malay, Mandarin, Tamil and English.Same as in Malaysia there are many culture and ethnic. But English is the mother

language in Singapore different with Malaysia that uses Malay as mother language.

In school at Singapore, they use English to interact with each other.

IDEAS THAT CAN STUDENT BRING WHEN STUDIES IN SINGAPORE

We have chosen to continue our study at National University Singapore in

English Language Course. As we know, Singapore is a country that developed fromvarious aspects such as technology, industrial development, infrastructure,

education and so on. It also uses English as medium of instruction in their

country. As we know, English is important and it is the international language .So,

indirectly it can improve the education system in our country if we are studying in

Singapore. Singapore also has a complete infrastructure and education system there

is much more advanced than us. Therefore, we can use the system over there and

make improvements to the education system in Malaysia. Then, English is a

common language is Singapore, so its a conducive environment for us to improve

our standard of English and easier for us to teach our students .

Singapore is the rendezvous of eastern and western cultures. Students can

truly explore a global learning experience through the blend of multiple cultures,

traditions and values. The country with its skyscrapers, lively cosmopolitan life and

state-of-the-art infrastructure has positioned itself as the leading commercial, finance

and education center of the world.

Singapore's high standards of living are also something that students can be

assured of. In a reported in The Economist in March 2002, Singapore's quality of life

surpassed that of London or New York. Thirty -nine factors were considered,

including political stability, personal freedom, air pollution and the quality of

    healthcare and education.

Singapore may seem like a small dot on the world map, but the island s tate

bustles all over with attractions and activities. Dining and shopping are two of the

top-rated activities of locals. Needless to say, this is reflected in the staggering rangeof foods and cuisine, as well as the proliferation of shops in the city and suburban

    centre.

Benefits can student gets when studying in Singapore is s tudents can obtain a

recognized foreign university degree without having to travel to a western country.

Singapore is a multilingual county and provides a conducive environment for

students to improve their English proficiency. Besides, Singapores rich multicultural

heritage is highlighted through the various ethnic groups (Chinese, Malays, Indians,

Eurasians) living together harmoniously over the past few decades . Singapores high

standards of living including personal freedom, high quality of healthcare, schools, is

something that students can look forward to.

With a GDP of S$160 billion in 2002, the island state though small in size and

population (4 million people) has become a reputable financial center, a key regional

trading center, the worlds busiest port, and a top location for investment. Often cited

as a model for transparency, efficiency and political stability, Singapore has earned

    recognition from around the world.

The Ministry of Education in Singapore aims to help their students to discover

their own talents, to make the best of these talents and realize their full potential, and

to develop a passion for learning that lasts through life. They have a strong

education system. Singaporean students and their goals high to achieve very good

results. This is acknowledged throughout the world. They also have good schools,

with capable school leaders and teachers, and facilities are among the best in the

    world.

They build strength as they prepare for the next generation of Singaporeans

for the future. This is the future that brings great opportunities, especially in Asia, but

also will bring many changes that they cannot predict today. Main schools and

universities is to provide our young people the opportunity to develop skills,

character and values that will enable them to continue to do well and take Singapore

    forward in this future.

What is secret of Singapore's success in education? There are many

ingredients in the success of Singapore's education system. First and foremost are

the efficiency, dedication and work of their education ministry in Singapore. They arethe ones who produced the framework for their education system and syll abi.

Singapore school books, including textbooks, workbooks and assessment books are

written based on the above mentioned syllabi. The environment in Singapore is also

a major important contributing factor. A large majority of parents in Singapore are

very concerned about the education of their children, and will strive to give their

  • 8/8/2019 Math Completed

    19/26

children the best in their education, including buying lots of assessment books and

getting private tuition for their children . The competitive environment in most schools

in Singapore is another major factor. Children are assessed many times each year

by their teachers via homework, projects, tests and exams. Streaming is part and

parcel of this competition. Children are streamed into various classes according to

their academic ability, which is highly dependent on their grades. Even their

Singapore schools are ranked according to the national exam grades that their

    students received each year.

Based on Singapore's education system, we can apply the methods of

education in Singapore into system education in Malaysia. This is because they see

the education system in the future. They provide the best education for the

advancement of their country. So, we can apply them to the education system in

Malaysia's education system by providing a comprehensive education from various

    aspects.

From my research too, I think the school must follow the school system in

Singapore that use merit system from primary school. With this system, each child is

able to progress through the education system as far as their ability allow. For

example, Singapore carried out through a streaming process at the end of Primary 4,

where pupils will be channeled into one of four language streams. For yourinformation, the students at the primary school there s tart to learn pure science such

as biology, chemistry, and physics from Primary 4. This shows that Singapore is

more advanced than us in education. It is not impossible if Singapore is selected as

the best place for education in the world. Then, students a re also further streamed at

the end of their primary school studies into the Special, Express or Normal courses

at the secondary level. This process is continued at the end of secondary education

to determine a student's post-secondary route. For your information, Mathematics is

a highly regarded subject in Singapore, and students who fail to succeed at math

often find themselves at a dead end in the system, unable to proceed to higher levels

of recognition. However, Singapore with its principles education for all has provided

education for the weaker students in art school or music school. So their government

has prepared early their students in many fields such as science, math, economic,

art and technical. From this situation, we can see that our country is behind so far

    than Singapore.

Our Ministry of Education also must take fast and valuable method like

Singapore. Singapore plans to introduce a less exam-based focus, such as

including more project-based work and extra-curricular activities as criteria for

university education. Selecting people based on grades would thus lead to inequality

as certain students might be interested in their studies but simply do not perform in

exams. There is also the argument that the exam system discriminates against

people because of the very nature of the examining process, which tends to select

for people with better linguistic ability rather than technical skill. As the result, our

school not provides the students who are an excellent in academic but in co

curriculum too. The aim of Singapore curriculum is to produce the all rounded

students. This suggestion affects the school to produce the quality and excellent

    students for our country.

As conclusion, education in Malaysia should be modified to ensure the quality

of education in our country. This is very important to ensure the progress of our

country in the future. So, what developed countries like Singapore do not wrong for

us to apply it to the Malaysian education system. Singapores Education system has

proven successful and is recognized by the entire world and why not for us to accept

the changes in our educational system for development in our country.

    Personal Response

    MOHAMAD TAQIYUDIN BIN ISMAIL

First of all, I would like to thank to our lecturer, Sir Lee Wai Heng for teaching

and providing guidance to me and my group`s member to completing this task. Wereceive this task at 25th July 2010 from Madam Wah at Dewan Bukhari. This task

requires us to review the three cities, namely Singapore, Tokyo and Bandung. After

that, we are required to make comparison between the three cities. Comparisons of

the three cities are based on aspects or element such as weather, education, and

many more. For me, this task a little difficult because we must first find the

background of the city and the university selected for study. Futhermore, my friend

and I have received RM 150 000 as a scholarship for a year. We are also required to

choose a university as a place to study for two years in one of the cities. This means

that the scholarship increased to RM 300,000 and for me it is a very large amount as

a student. However, this task also required us to bring the ideas that we have from

    there to our country.

On the other hand, my friend and I discuss on the task given. Then, we have

decided to set each person select a city for review. Khairul Nizam choose Tokyo as a

city of his choice. Muhammad Nur was chosen the city of Bandung and I was chose

the city of Singapore as my choice. After that, we combine our work and discuss ifanything wrong. Next, we talk and discuss together to choose the best city. After

that, we decide to choose Singapore as our choice. I feel relieved for not feeling

pressured to do this task because the group member showed good cooperation.

For me, this assignment gave me a lot of new knowledge and provides

good values. I never went to Singapore, Tokyo and Bandung, but after completing

this task I have acquired a lot of things about these towns. Besides that, this task

also requires a high tolerance because to complete it requires a long time.

A lot of things that I have learned when I do this assignment with my group

mate. When we were done this task, I know how living also many place thatinteresting cost in this 3 country and I there.

Besides, I also know about education in this country. For me, Tokyo is best

choice to continue study. But, when we look other factor and budget, Singapore is

really suitable and education there is also same level with Tokyo. A lot ideas can I

bring to Malaysia when we study at outside country because the education system at

other country is different from us.

This task also needs us to think critically to make budget for all element . We

must know how university fees, transport, food, and others budget. So, we have to

work hard to find it. Finally, I was satisfied that my group mate and I can finish this

    task.
