• “Elementary & Intermediate Algebra”, 2nd Edition, by Michael Sullivan with MyMathLab.  • Mechanical pencil.  Highlighter or different colored pens.  • Graph paper.  Lined paper.  Stapler.  • Folder or binder to store syllabus, handouts, graded exams, quizzes, and homework.  • A calculator is optional. They will not be allowed on the exams. If you decide to buy a calculator, a 

scientific calculator costing $10 ‐ $15 will suffice and may be later used in Math 070. (Try the TI‐30X IIS.)  However, no calculators will be used on tests or final exam.  DEADLINES

COURSE DESCRIPTION  Examines higher degree and rational equations and inequalities, functions and graphs, systems of equations, exponential and logarithmic functions, introduction to sequences, and applications. We will be covering the following chapters:  

Chapter 8: Graphs, Relations, and Functions  Chapter 9: Radicals and Rational Exponents Chapter 10: Quadratic Equations and Functions  Chapter 11: Exponential and Logarithmic Functions  Chapter 12: Conics

• Attend every class meeting and stay the entire class session. I keep track of your attendance. If you miss class, obtain the notes from a classmate. If you arrive late, find a seat near the door or in the back of the class so that you do not disrupt others.  

• Completing homework each evening allows you to participate fully in discussion of the material and consequently benefit from the information being provided.  

• Be considerate of your fellow students and instructor by not talking, texting, or listening to I­Pods while lecture is in progress.  

• I prefer that snacks be eaten outside of class during break and that beverages brought into class have a cap.  

• COC has implemented a new smoking policy. Smoking is allowed in parking lots not near buildings.   It is your responsibility to drop the course. I have the option to drop or withdraw you from this course if your absences have exceeded six hours worth of class. Please e­mail me if you have several absences and do not want to get dropped.   ONLINE HOMEWORK  

• Online assignments will be assigned online at http://www.coursecompass.com/ and will be due as indicated.  You need to register into coursecompass to work on the online assignments. (See Guide to Access Online Resources information sheet)   

• You should complete the work daily and it is your responsibility to keep track of your assignments.   • Plan on studying and completing homework a minimum of 15 hours per week.   • Missing many online assignments combining with many absences (3 or more) without talk to me will 

result of getting dropped from class. • If you have any trouble with online assignments, please talk to me immediately before it is too late.

 READING ASSIGNMENTS 

• Reading sections before the lecture or to catch up with the class due to your absences is your responsibility.   

• DO NOT TELL ME YOU CANNOT COMPLETE THE ASSIGNMENTS DUE TO YOUR ABSENCES.  CLASS WORK 

• Class work will consist of several problems from the textbook and must be turned in by the end of each class meeting.   

• Work must be shown in order to receive credit (papers showing only answers will not be accepted).  

• You are encouraged, but not required, to work on the class work assignment problems with a partner or in a small group (no more than four students per group).  

• Each class work is worth 5 points and you may drop 3 class work assignments at the end of the semester.   QUIZZES   

• Quizzes will be given throughout the semester as indicated on the EXAMINATION SCHEDULE hand out and will primarily focus on reading assignment, class work and homework assignments.    

• No makeup quizzes will be given under any circumstances.   • Missed quizzes will receive a score of zero.  However, two of your lowest quiz score will be dropped at the 

end of the semester.  

EXAMS • There will be five chapter exams given throughout the semester.   • The test dates are list on the EXAMINATION SCHEDULE.   • No make­up chapter exams will be given under any circumstances!    • If you know in advance that you will miss an exam, then it is possible to arrange to take it in advance, but 

no exam will be given after the class has taken it.  • Furthermore, to improve your final grade, one of any missing chapter exam will be replaced with the 

final exam score.   If you do not miss any chapter exam, your final exam also will be used to replace with your lowest chapter exam if the final exam score is better.   

• I strongly recommend that you keep all quizzes, class‐works, and exams until you receive your course grade in case you have questions regarding your grade.  

 FINAL EXAM 

• The final exam is cumulative and will be given on Wednesday, December 8th, 2010.   • No make­up Final Exam will be given under any circumstances!    

 CALCULATORS 

• Calculators will not be allowed on chapter exams/final exam.  • When doing homework problems, try to work them out without a calculator.  • If you become calculator dependent, you will have a hard time on the chapter exams/final exam.  

 GRADING    

Your grade will be computed from your homework, tests, and final exam. The following weighted average will be used to calculate your grade.

Your grade will be determined using the following scale:    90% ‐ 100%           A 

      80% ‐ 89%            B         70% ‐ 79%            C        60% ‐ 69%            D         59% and below        F    A grade C or higher is required in order to continue with Math 102, 103, 111, 130, 140. Statement on Academic Integrity at College of the Canyons: 

Students are expected to do their own work as assigned. At College of the Canyons, we believe that academic integrity and honesty are some of the most important qualities college students need to develop and maintain. To facilitate a culture of academic integrity, College of the Canyons has defined plagiarism and academic dishonesty. Due process procedures have been established when plagiarism or academic dishonesty is suspected.   

At COC, we define plagiarism as follows: Plagiarism is the submission of someone else’s work or ideas as one’s own, without adequate attribution. When a student submits work for a class assignment that includes the words, ideas or data of others, without acknowledging the source of the information through complete, accurate, and specific references, plagiarism is involved. This may include dual submissions of a similar work for credit for more than one class, without the current instructor’s knowledge and approval.  To be specific, below are some of the situations that will be considered plagiarism at COC: 

• Use information from any source, online or in print, in one’s own writing without acknowledging the source in the content and in the reference page of the assignment; 

• Simply list the sources in the reference page, without parenthetical citations in the body of the essay; • Take more than one printed line of  words consecutively from the source without putting quotation 

marks around them, even though the student has put the author’s name in the parentheses or in the reference page; 

• Turn in work done for other classes, regardless how big or small the assignment may be, without the current instructor’s approval—this is considered “self‐plagiarism,” which is a form of academic dishonesty; or, 

• Turn in work by another student, even by accident.  In addition, COC has strict rules against using electronic devices during exams without the instructor’s approval. To be specific, absolutely no cell phones or any electronic devices can be on the desk or in sight during test or exam without the instructor’s approval. The presence of electronic devices in sight during exams may be considered as intention to cheat and will be processed as a form of academic dishonesty.  Cases of alleged academic dishonesty, such as plagiarism or cheating, will be referred to the Dean of Student Services for investigation. See your syllabus for course specific policies, rules, and guidelines on plagiarism and academic dishonesty.  

SIGMA (Supplemental Instruction for Gaining Master in Algebra and Arithmetic­5% EXTRA):  College of the Canyons is offering a series of skills building workshops (called Supplemental Instruction workshops) to promote student success in courses throughout the college. As part of the requirements for this class, you are required to complete at least 5 activities, approximately one hour each, in the SIGMA ‐ Math Achievement Center.  These activities are designed to prepare you for and reinforce the concepts covered in this course.  These activities represent 10% of your class grade.   The activities may include: • Workshops:  Interactive mini presentations on key topics related to this course. • Guided Learning Activities:  Independent activities including a one‐on‐one review and discussion. 

 I will specify the workshops that are most relevant to this course and the dates by which they should be completed. The activities will be completed in the SIGMA – Math Achievement Center in Bonelli‐207.  To gain access to SIGMA, please enter through the TLC in Bonelli‐209.  You will need to take your student ID card (not just the number) or any Photo ID to be logged into the system at the front counter. To receive credit you must actively participate and understand the concepts being covered.  Your worksheet or quiz will be collected at the end of the workshop and will be returned to me.   Check the Skills4Success website at www.canyons.edu/skills4success for the workshop schedule.

Guide to Access Online Resources  

CourseCompass is the course management system (CMS) used to access online resources for Math 115. The resources include student solution manual, online homework assignments, discussion boards, multimedia textbook and more.  

 To register in the Coursecompass course, each student will need the following: 

• Student access code. Students will receive this code when they purchase the book.  

• Important: The student access code is nontransferable and can be used only once. 

• Course ID – srichoom61431 

• Email address – The student's registration and enrollment confirmation will be sent to this email address. This address is also available to you, the instructor, for course‐based communications.  

A student who does not already have a Pearson account and is enrolling for the first time should follow the registration instructions on the home page of the Coursecompass website.  A student who already has a Pearson account performs steps 1 through 6 in Registering and Enrolling in a New Subject below to enroll in a new course.  To assist these students, copy the instructions to a document and distribute. You may want to enter your course ID in the space provided in step 3.  Registering and Enrolling in a New Subject 

1. Go to http://www.coursecompass.com and click Register in the Students area. 

2. Review the list of required items for enrolling in a course, and click Next. 

3. Enter the course ID: – srichoom61431 for your new course, and click Find Course.  

4. Follow the instructions to either: Use a student access code or Purchase access online 

5. Print the Confirmation page to keep a record of your registration and enrollment information, your login             name, and the email address used for your account. 

6. Click Log In Now to access your new course. 

 To use a student access code: 1. Verify the course information and click Access Code. 

2. Enter your student access code and click Next. 

3. Review the license agreement and click I Accept. 

4. Indicate whether you already have a Pearson account: 

a.   If not, select No and follow the instructions to create your login name and password. 

   b.   If you do, select Yes and enter your login information. 

c.   If you're not sure, select Not sure. Enter your email address and click Search. If you have an account,        you will receive your login information by email, and you can change your selection to Yes. If you do not have an account, change your selection to No and create your login information. 

Click Next. 

5. Enter or confirm the information requested on the Account information page: 

         a. Your name and an email address that you check regularly 

         b. School Location: Select your school country and, for schools in the U.S., enter the zip code(COC uses             91355). From the resulting list, select your school name. If it is not listed, select Other and enter school             name, city, and state.  

 c. Security question: Select a question from the drop‐down list; then enter the answer. 

Click Next. 

To purchase course access online:  1. Click Buy Now. 

2. Click the Buy button next to the course materials you want to buy. (You might see options with or without an online ebook, for example.) 

3. Accept the license agreement. 

4. Indicate whether you already have a Pearson account: 

If not, select No and follow the instructions to create your login name and password. 

If you do, select Yes and enter your login information. 

 If you're not sure, select Not sure. Enter your email address and click Search. If you have an account, you will receive your login information by email, and you can change your selection to Yes. If you do not have an account, change your selection to No and create your login information. 

Click Next. 

5. Enter or confirm the information requested on the Account Information page:

Click Next. 

6. Enter your payment information (credit card or PayPal account and billing information). Click Continue. 

7. Review your order and, when you are ready, click Place Order. 

Note: For more help with registration, go to www.coursecompass.com and click Registration Help under Students. For help during registration, click the Video Tutorial link at the top of the registration pages.  Steps to do online assignments: 1. Go to http://www.coursecompass.com/ 2. Log in using your personal user name and password. 3. Click on Math 070 Elementary Algebra. 4. Click on DO HOMEWORK on the left column. 5. Click on THE NAME OF THE ASSIGNMENT. 6. Click on question number 1.(you will see the question, work on it and write the answer down in the box) 7. Click Check Answer every time you work on each problem. 8. Click 2 on the tap to move on to the second question, then follows steps 6. 9. You can finish homework at once or you can work on them a little bit by a little bit each day, but make sure 

to click save each time you work on the assignment. 

                            Enrolling in Another MyMathLab Course using the SAME Textbook 

(New student access code NOT required) 1.  Go to www.coursecompass.com and log in using the login name and password you created when   you initially registered for your MyMathLab course. 2.  In the Courses box, click the Enroll in Another Course button. 

 3.  On the Product Selection screen, enter the course ID for the new course you wish to enroll in and   click on Find Course: srichoom61431  

4. On the Confirm Course screen, verify that the course is correct and click on Next.  

5.  After a few moments you will see the Confirmation and Summary screen acknowledging your   access to the new course. To log into your new course, click on  Enter Course Now.  

6.  At the Course Compass login screen login using your same login and password.  7.  On the My CourseCompass screen you’ll see your new course in your Courses  box.  

                      

8.  You may continue to see both courses when you log in. If the instructor for the previous course   removes you from that course roster, you will no longer see that course listed in your Courses   box.  9.   Be sure to enter and work in the correct course. Verify the course name, course ID and   instructor name to ensure you are working in the correct course. If you  aren’t sure, check with the   instructor of your new course.  10.  If you have questions or need assistance enrolling in another MyMathLab course, please contacts   the  student support team at 1 800 677‐6337 or go to   http://mymathlab.com/contactus_stu.html.
