Math 030 Fall 2005 Intermediate Algebra Instructor: Yenkhanh Vu E-mail: [email protected] Voicemail: None Lecture Times: 7:10 – 9:15 pm Building: Mid Col 104 Text: Intermediate Algebra , 9 th Ed. by Lial, Hornsby, McGinnis, Student Responsibilities: It is the student’s responsibility to take notes during lecture, go over the notes, read corresponding sections from the text, and work on assigned problems as they are assigned. Most importantly, please seek help if you should need it. I am available by appointment and the Math Center is also available for your assistance. Don’t allow yourself to fall behind because catching up is hard to do. Student Wait Time: If, for some unforeseen reason, I cannot make it to class on time, please remain in class for 15 minutes unless otherwise notified by a staff member. Attendance: If you have 4 consecutive or 6 total unexcused absences, you will be dropped from the class. I will reward near-perfect attendance and punctuality with a grade bump if you are at borderline percentage after finals. Homework: Homework will be collected on the day of the test and is worth 10 points per chapter. Write neatly and legibly on 8½x11 paper, label chapter, page, and box your answers. Homework Directions : You should always do the problems as they are assigned, before the next class meeting. Always check answers with the back of the book. If you get an incorrect answer, redo the problem. If you still don’t get the right answer, mark the problem to get help on it. Extra Credit: You can earn extra credit by volunteering at the board (1 point per problem) or putting in extra hours at the lab (1 point per hour). I may also assign some extra credit assignments from time to time. You can earn a maximum of 40 extra credit points. Quizzes: Starting on week 2, there will generally be a quiz every Tuesday at the beginning of class, unless otherwise noted. These are worth 10 points each. All quiz questions will be very similar to the homework problems. This should be an incentive to do your homework in a timely manner. You will be given very little time , but if you complete the homework as I assign them, you should do fine. I will count the top 10 scores and disregard the rest. Exams: There will be 4 exams through out the semester. They will be part written, part scantron. Make sure you have 882 scantrons on exam days. Always write legibly, show all work, and box your answers on the written portion. Each exam is worth 100 points.

Lecture Times: 7:10 – 9:15 pm Building: Mid Col 104 Text: Intermediate Algebra, 9th Ed. by Lial, Hornsby, McGinnis,

Student Responsibilities: It is the student’s responsibility to take notes during lecture, go over the notes, read corresponding sections from the text, and work on assigned problems as they are assigned. Homework Directions: You should always do the problems as they are assigned, before the next class meeting. You will be given very little time, but if you complete the homework as I assign them, you should do fine. I will count the top 10 scores and disregard the rest. Exams: There will be 4 exams through out the semester. They will be part written, part scantron. Make sure you have 882 scantrons on exam days. Always write legibly, show all work, and box your answers on the written portion. Each exam is worth 100 points.

Final Exam: The final will be cumulative (it covers everything) and is worth 150 points. It is scheduled on Thursday December 15th during regular class hours. You must show up for the final in order to receive a passing grade for the course. Make-ups: Make-up exams must be arranged with the instructor ahead of time, with legitimate reason and proof under the instructor’s judgement. There will be absolutely no make ups on quizzes (Don’t come to class late on Tuesdays, you will miss the quiz). Make up exams may have different formats than the exam taken in class. Academic Dishonesty: Zero-tolerance. Those who are caught cheating will receive an “F” for the course. Please show all work at all times, (that is, on HW, quizzes, exams, extra credit, everything), because if you don’t I may assume you didn’t do your own work. Calculators: Generally, a scientific calculator is all you will need. However, there are a few sections where a graphing calculator will be very helpful (TI 82, 83, or 84. No TI-89.) Course Schedule: Attached is a tentative course schedule. I will try my best to following this schedule as closely as possible. However, I will make changes as they arise, and you are advised to come to class regularly as well as contact a classmate (or myself) if you do miss class in order to stay updated. Grades: Grades will be computed as follows:

Homework 100 points Quizzes 100 points

Tests 400 points Final 150 points Total 750 points

The standard grading scale of 90/80/70 will be applied, though minor adjustments maybe made at the instructor’s discretion.

Help: If you need help, please do not wait until the last minute. You can get help at the following locations:

1. The Tutorial Center (in the Special Services building). Students are assigned private one-on-one tutors for a limited amount of time. For more information call (714) 432-5559 or (714) 432-5538.

2. The Math Center (Lewis Applied Sciences Building, Room 212). Walk-in tutoring is available at the tutoring counter for quick questions.

In addition, you are welcome to set up appointments with me through out the quarter. I am more than happy to help students provided they have put forth the effort to learn. On the other hand, I will not tolerate last minute cramming sessions, so don’t attempt!!!! Good luck and I hope you will find the course useful.
