Mastiff Supported Entry (A Magical Weekend)

Mexico City, August 5th

  – 8th

2010

The Mexican Mastiff community would like to share what we call, “The most emotive show”.

Mexico is a huge territory where the biggest Mastiff concentration is in Mexico City, however

there are great mastiffs spread around the whole country. Mastiff entries in regular shows are

usually 1 or 2, sometimes 5, but only at important shows the number will raise from 8 to 10

Mastiffs.

Las weekend at the Mexico-Argentino Kennel Club ALL BREED Dog show, has been the biggest

Mastiff entry ever in Mexico (26 Mastiffs) Judges were NORMAN PATTON (USA), FRED BASSETT

(USA), FERNANDO COSTA MAIA (BRASIL), FABIAN ARIENTI (USA) and CARLOS FLAQUER (BRASIL).

Carlos Flaquer, following his father steps is now the formerly owner of Chaputepek

Mastiffs of Brasil, author of the book “Mastiff Ingles (um fiel amigo)” and FCI Judge

for more than 10 years. He was commissioned to Judge the supported entry held

on Saturday 7th .

Celebration started on Thursday with “King Moro (ordoñez)” who was BOB and

GROUP 1st two days in a row. In the Puppy class (6-9 months) “Atila (acuña)” was

group 2nd

on Thursday.

On Saturday, it was 10 am and the

mastiff community started to arrive

from all the different cities of

Mexico, some of them with their

whole families. Most seemedanxious to start sharing

experiences… a nice “Mastiff talk”  ,

like if everybody spent their entire

lives saving it exclusively for that

day. Conversations happened

mostly in small groups while walking arround the grooming areas, anxiety

and nervousness was almost vanished with the friendly atmosphere created

by mastiff owners; however, deeply inside everybody knew that peace of

mind was not meant to last.

It was barely past noon and the great event was announced, every soul of the

mastiff community gathered next to the ring, applauding every mastiff

walking inside. Puppy classes started and Judge Flaquer was kind enough to

approach to the people

with all the Mastiffs

behind him, to express his

opinions about the dogs,everybody responded

with the most respectful

silence, followed by the

applause after every

explanation.

Males 6 – 9 months.

One of the toughest classes was Puppy Bitch 9-18 months with more than

25% of the Mastiff entries. Carlos Flaquer took his time judging; different

alignments were set along all the ring, Carlos also faced them testing their

temperaments with a great knowledge of the mastiff nature, saluting to

those who barked and held their ground, unfortunately but wisely he had toexcuse one bitch in the open class who tried to seize his hand.

Carlos was quite aware those girls will carry the next generation of Champion

Mastiffs in Mexico and he made sure that everyone understood it.

Classes ended and the big moment arrived; in the middle of the cheering

crowd, all champions entered in the ring, followed by the class winners.

Flaquer’s performance was not different from what he did with the classes,

moving dogs from one place to another and dividing them in to smaller

groups; we can’t deny he knew how to create expectation.

Before choosing the best ones, Flaquer stated there wasn’t going to be a

critique, he got a well deserved standing ovation when addressing to the

audience he said: “I respect the fact they are all worthy Champions in

Mexico or any place in the world, I will say no more about them…

unfortunately I have to choose only one today, place them back in their

crates, because gladly I am taking all of them with me to Brasil”.

Party wasn’t over yet, after lunch and a nice ceremony, where the Mexican

Navy raised the Mexican, Argentinean and FCM Flags; it was again Carlos

Flaquer judging the working group.

Everybody was surrounding the ring area, Mastiff fanciers were all together,

Atila (acuña) was the first one to enter the ring on the Puppy (6-9monts)

group, needless to say that the working group is always very competitive in

the entire world.

Great was the moment when Atila got his Blue Ribbon; people didn’t move,

now it was Leila’s turn in the (9-18 months) group, in spite of Tony Olivera’s

excellent handling Leila only got the Red Ribbon, “only”? I believe that

anyone that has shown a Mastiff will know that any group placement has a

taste of glory.

Two group placements in a row, everyone wondered, will the father of these two great

puppies meet the need of glory?

Truly, it was exciting to see all the beautiful adults in the working group, sometimes hope

faded while watching the other breeds´ great structures “flying” in the ring. When Caliber

got the Blue Ribbon, there were many happy hearts but some worried minds because of the bigger challenge Caliber was about to face….

Once again, Carlos Flaquer went inside the show

ring fallowed by the group winners, the German

Sheppard and a Giant Xolo had been the BIS

winners not only this weekend but all over this

year. It was 4 past noon, after a long trip from

Zamora, Michoacán to México City, and yet, Caliber

had the will to satisfy his hunger for glory, he never

lost focus, not even when his path was full of

immovable pigeons that had no other choice than

flying away under Caliber’s determination, almost

hitting his face.

A Mastiff had never been BIS under Carlos Flaquer and he explained to the Mexican

breeders why, at the seminar after the show “I am a Mastiff breeder and nothing is

enough for me, that’s why I seek for the best”.

Sometimes the payoff to all kind of efforts is not fair, this was not the case on

Saturday for Caliber and people behind him.

RAINMAKERS CALIBER OF REAL VALLEY WAS BEST IN SHOW.

Rarely things are so well put together, after 13 years once again a Mastiff wins a BIS in

Mexico, It was Caliber’s first time, it was also the first one for the owner Jose Luis, it was

the first time either after 10 years as pro-handler for Cesar Gutierrez, it was the first one

for the breeder, Rebecca Thyssen of Rainmakers Mastiffs and it was the first time too that

Carlos Flaquer gives a BIS to a Mastiff.

Happiness invaded the place; celebration did not stop until midnight, some

kept celebrating until 5 am. But the biggest celebration was the gathering in

great harmony of the most important Mexican Mastiff breeders, future

breeders and fanciers, where the mayor subject was the foundation on solid

and healthy bases of what has to become the first Mastiff club in Mexico, hopping to be able to support next year a Mastiff specialty in the same place.

On Sunday, honors were repeated in their groups by Caliber and Atila, both

with a blue ribbon, Dasha (ordoñez) was BOS. There is no doubt it was the

Mastiff weekend in a very hard and competitive show, Carlos Flaquer was

pleased with Mastiffs’ quality in Mexico, where two different Mastiffs made

all 4 days group 1st

at the adults working group, although Caliber proved to

be a great addition to this country with his BIS, group ribbons and ribbons to

his offsprings in the puppy classes, Carlos Flaquer highly recommended not

to overlook the great characteristics of all the mastiffs that attended to the

show, where lines like Greiner Hall, Beowulfs, Groppetti and still some Deer

Run, could produce quality Mastiffs to be placed among the whole country

and why not? In a close future to other countries.
