Masthead Analysis

• How would you describe this masthead? This Masthead is for NME ‘New Music Express’, It is simply a bold red title placed on the top of the main image on the front cover. It doesn’t have a background shape but its just the initials of the magazine. Also the colour of the magazine connotes power and love which could show the importance of music to some people.• Who would you think the audience would be and how can you tell?I personally think that this particular masthead is for the younger generation, this is because of the bright colour and through how bold it is. The thick bold writing also would attract the younger generation as in some way looks a bit like graffiti which links more to the younger generation.• What genre do you think this magazine writes about and what indicates that from the

masthead? The genre of music this masthead portrays is rock. The reason I think this is because of how big and bold it is, in some ways it is quite loud which also represents rock .

• How would you describe this masthead? This masthead is simple and bold yet still has a sense of elegance along with this., this is because of the flick of the Q which is quite elegant instead of normal and boring. The colour red also shows power and strength which could mean it is based around high/some of the best artists.• Who would you think the audience would be and how can you tell?I think due to the ‘elegance’ of the positioning of the Q, this magazine is targeted for the older generation because it is quite simplistic and it looks very mature as well, which links more to the older generation than the younger generation. • What genre do you think this magazine writes about and what indicates that

from the masthead? From the look of this masthead I do not think that this magazine has a certain genre it focuses on. I think this magazine focuses more on the biggest artists at the time of publishing and who’s really successful at that time being.

• How would you describe this masthead? This masthead for Billboard is plain whit text filled with bright colour is the b, o, a and d, this is so that it appeals to the consumers but adding bold and bright colours will instantly make the magazine stand out from the others.• Who would you think the audience would be and how can you tell? From the font of the writing I think that this magazine is for more the middle age people. This is because the font looks quite mature and doesn’t look as if it is there to target a younger generation as it quite formal where as a younger generation magazine would go for a font which is less formal and looks more youth like.• What genre do you think this magazine writes about and what indicates

that from the masthead?I personally think from the masthead this magazine genre is more pop. This is due to the colours which are used and the font of the masthead. Bright colours are usually things which link to pop and outgoing things, therefore this is why I think this masthead is linked to pop music.

Each of these differ in some way, on way they all differ against each other is by the font they use. The first magazine uses quite a loud and bold title where as the second uses quite an elegant font and the last one uses a formal font. The reason they all use different fonts is because they all want too attract different target audience and portray a different genre. If you look closely these magazine covers do not differ by a high amount but also do share similarities. One similarity is the colours used both NME and Q use a red colour for there main theme. The reason this could have been is because the colour red connotes passion which is how people feel about music. However Billboard uses bright, vibrant colours because they want to try and attract a wide variety and may want their magazine to stand out from the rest.

How are they different?
