Mastery and competencies

Competency based learning is a common way of tracking students’ progress in a class. Usually

each class has a set of related competencies that the class must cover. These competencies

can also be called proficiencies, learning outcomes, or standards. For example, a Grade 5

Science Curriculum would contain all the competencies associated with that grade’s science

requirements. While students advance through the class and complete certain tasks, they get a

better understanding of the competencies that are being taught.

Our Mastery feature allows teachers to track student progress based on competencies.

Teachers can create their own competencies for classes or use the preloaded US Common Core

standards and Next Generation Science standards.

After setting competencies in a class, you can see a coverage analysis of how well your class

covers the competencies.

You can easily align lessons and assessments with competencies.

Mastery levels for all students are also displayed in the class Students area. All information is

updated in real-time.

You can also see a Mastery grid which shows mastery levels for students on all competencies

in a class.

Mastery and Automation

You can add actions that should be taken automatically when students drop below a threshold

for certain competencies for a specified number of days. You can use this feature to

automatically send them recommendations on how to improve in that area, or to alert teachers

so they can help the student.

Created competencies can be stored in the resources library and reused for other classes.

Students can see a Mastery progress pie chart on the class landing page.

There are many options for actions that can be triggered, such as enrolling students in classes

and paths, sending custom messages, lock lessons, and more.
