Über den selbstquälerischen Vorstellungen all seiner Unterlassungssünden überkam ihn eine schwere

Müdigkeit, und so entschlief er mit gekrümmten Rücken, die Stirn auf die Hand,

diese auf den Tisch gelegt.Ein Brausen und Sausen füllte sein Ohr, wie von

unermesslichen Wassermassen; es wurde dunkel um ihn, er riss die Augen auf

und erwachte. Seine Glieder flogen, der Angstschweiss drang ihm aus

allen Poren, sein Puls ging unregelmäßig, sein Gesicht war nass vor Tränen.

Es war stockdunkel. Taumelnd erhob er sich, noch immer währte seine

Herzensangst. Der Wald draußen rauschte wie Meeresbrandung, der

Wind warf Hagel und Regen. Er tastete ratlos mit den Händen umher.

Einen Augenblick kam er sich vor wie ein Ertrinkender - da plötzlich flammte es bläulich blendend auf, wie wenn Tropfen überirdischen Lichtes in die dunkle Er-

datmosphäre herabsänken, um sogleich von ihr erstickt zu werden.

Der Augenblick genügte, um ihn zu sich selbst zu bringen.

Er griff nach seiner Laterne, die er auch glücklich zu fassen bekam, und in diesem Augenblick erwachte der Donner am fernsten Saume des märkischen Nachthimmels. Erst dumpf und verhalten grollend, wälzte er sich näher in kurzen, brandenden Erzwellen, bis er, zu Riesenstößen anwachsend, sich endlich, die ganze Atmosphäre überflutend, dröhnend, schütternd und brausend entlud.Die Scheiben klirrten, die Erde bebte.Einen Augenblick wurde der Mond sichtbar, wie er gleich einer blassgoldnen Schale zwischen den Wolken lag. In seinem Lichte sah man das Wühlen des Windes in den schwarzen Kronen der Kiefern. Die Blattgehänge der Birken am Bahndamm wehten und flatterten wie gespenstige Rossschweife. Darunter lagen die Linien der Geleise, welche, vor Nässe glänzend, das blasse Mondlicht in einzelnen Flecken aufsaugten. Er riss die Mütze vom Kopfe. Der Regen tat ihm wohl und lief über sein Gesicht.

I guess it was desires that tore us apart

There has to be passion

A passion for living, surviving

And that means detachment
