Shanghai. He became a lecturer at the Nangyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore. His paintings

were strongly influenced by Chan (Zen) and the unorthodox Qing School of Yangzhou. He actively

participated in several exhibitions outside Singapore which also incidentally promote Singapore.

Among the many awards he had received are the Public Service Star in 1964, a Gold Medal by

the National Museum of History, Taiwan in 1980, the first recipient of the ASEAN Cultural and

Communication Award for outstanding artists in 1987 and received an honorary doctorate from

    the National University of Singapore.

Chen Wen Hsi is Singapores foremost painter that combines Chinese and Western techniques in

his semi abstract work. Chen Wen-hsi is renowned for his skill in painting animal themes. Chicken,

gibbons, herons, carps and squirrels are some of his favourite subjects. Numerous solo and group

exhibitions were held in Singapore and around the world. Wen Hsis artistic excellence was rec-

ognized. Wen Hsis constant eagerness to strike for something new led him to learn finger painting

a technique that dates from the Tang Dynasty. This drawing style has enabled him to produce

unpredictable broken stroke on paper. He developed his skill in finger painting, ink-and-brush, oil,

sketches, abstracts and semi-abstract techniques. Every subject he paints, whether lotuses, gibbons,

egrets, monkeys, squirrels, birds, or flowers and trees, is palpably vibrant.

The influence of great masters can be seen in Lee Cheng Yongs

previous works. From Cezenne to Picasso, traces of influence can

be seen in his art as Cheng Yong continued to define art which can

be associated with 20th century Malaysia. This painting of Fishermen,

Cheng Yong managed all that by taking a scene associated with Ma-

laysia and stripping it down to its bare minimum. Even his choice

of colours was radical at that time as it was bold, contrasting, bares

resemblance to the De Stijl movement. It is Lee Cheng Yongs cour-

age and interpretation of art that helped pave the way for abstract

    art in Malaysia.

Mat Ali graduated from University Technology Mara (UiTM) with a Bachelor of Fine Art in 1998 and has since gained fame as both an artist and a sculptor. Mat Alis love for Malay traditional martial arts, Silat, has been extended to the notion of creative manifestation. His subjects for both canvas and sculptor have always been surrounding Silat, the traditional Malay martial arts. Shrouded with mysticism, Mat Ali has taken the art of sculpturing to new heights with the level of detail and complexities in his intricate studies of the human figure. This love for Silat and detailed works can be seen throughout the Unsung Heroes series (2013). with oil, this painting portrays all the grace associated with a Balinese woman. Her

fingers have such a deft touch they are barely touching each other, her sexuality

accentuated by her figure and pout lips, her love of nature represented by the

exotic flowers surrounding her, and all this not forgetting her culture and supersti-

tious as can be seen by the statue right behind her. In Bali, Khaw Sia manages to

not only capture the beauty of a Balinese woman but everything that defines her.

Lee Joo For is a master Symbolist. Here, in this painting, there are 3 canvases on easels, 2 of which depict a woman each. The middle lady has a big abdomen, suggesting that she is pregnant symbolizing Fertility. The triangle on her abdomen represents the Holy Trinity, signifying that she is blessed by God with a child. The third canvas is unclear, and suggests that there is no life there. The man in front looks perplexed, as if he has no further role, once the woman has conceived. From another point of view, Lee Joo For (who is a Christian symbolised by the crucified hand) suggest that he has a fertile imagination, giving birth to paintings from blank canvases.

Yusof GhaniAfter working on Hijau series for four years, Yusof Ghani returned to explore the human figure under the series of paintings New Protest Series. Always one to document the changing times, Yusof Ghani placed emphasis on the documentation of human movement to capture historical and social commentary. None more significant than this masterpiece, 050513. Completed on 5th May 2013, it captures the movement of a very significant date in Malaysian history; the 13th General Elections. There were much excitement to the buildup towards the elections, it was highly anticipated and the turnout was the highest in history. Yusof Ghani captured all this with this painting. The shift in the political arena can be seen as the ruling party is represented in blue. Standing tall and resilient, they seem determined to resist sea of change. The sea of change, which comes in the form of the opposition coalition, is represented by the three figures behind which are intertwined with colours as it to represent their parties and unity. The outcome of which was despite their efforts, the ruling party still stands, with a smaller majority. The light colour palette reflects the vibrant environment the generated by General Elections had and the brushstrokes which is rash and free flowing reflects the eagerness of Malaysians for a change.

Bayu Utomos contribution to the Malaysian art industry cannot be understated. Graduating from Mara Institute of Technology (UiTM) with a degree in Fine Art, Bayu Utomo is not just an artist but a sculptor as well. A founding member of Matahari, an independent art space for resident and emerging artist, Bayu Utomo announced himself to the world after his solo exhibition Bayu Utomo Radjikin: Solo Exhibition of Paintings, National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur in 1996. Bayu Utomo has since gone one to hold seven solo exhibitions and the numerous awards he has received includes a highly coveted Major Award for the Young Contemporary Art Competition, National Art Gallery, in 1991, Honourable Mentions in both the 1994 and 1995 Philip Morris Malaysian Art Awards, and a Special Award for the 2005 One World No War competition, Kuala Lumpur.

Bayu Utomo continues to contribute to the art industry and has recently initiated the Malaysian Art Archive and Research Support (MARS) in an attempt to preserve, compile, and archive materials related to Malaysian visual arts. Here we have an early piece, a self-portrait, which illustrates the artist himself. Its collage texture provides not only a refreshing visualization, but is an indication of the sculptor in the artist himself. Painted with a dark palette, it reflects the seriousness the artist view himself. The portrait is given a fixed gaze, and its face painted with such determination, as if the artist is saying even back then that he will one day make his mark in the Malaysian art industry.

Batik art has ascended from a humble and practical worn piece of cloth and alleviated to fine art today and Ismail Mat Hus-sin is one of the very finest in this art. Born in Pantai Sabak, Kota Bharu, Ismail Mat Hussins batik combines warm tones and earthy hues from a restricted palette of colors to depict everyday rural scenes with lively good humor. His human figures are drawn more real looking people with dull background sur-roundings and Ismails trademark is heavy limbs with the muscles rendered mo-saic-like and graceful movements of figures. Hendra GunawanBorn in Bandung, 1918. He taught at the Indonesian Fine Art Academy (ASRI), Yogyakarta in 1957. Hendra took part in founding

the Front Seniman (Artists Front) in Bandung, and Pelukis Rakyat (Peoples Artists) in Yogyakarta. He also established the art club

Pusaka Sunda together with Barli, Obon and some other friends. He is undoubtedly one of the Indonesias greatest pioneers of

modern art and was considered to be one of the best and most versatile painters in Indonesia. He died in Bali 1983.

Hendra Gunawan created paintings conveying his great feelings and deepest emotions for his country and people. He inspired his

paintings with sympathy, compassion, and affection about common people. Portrays of women figures, sellers or mother and child

were on old theme that constantly revisited throughout the artists career.

Hendra figures are types, not clearly distinguishable individuals. He used exaggerated profiles, with long necks, protruding noses,

and large eyes, echoes the stylization of human form found in wayang. Hendras people are never passive victims of their faith; they

are always depicted as active subjects. He took the daily lives of people subjects for his paintings and captured them movingly on

canvas in his inimitable style. Though Hendras art was, from the very beginning focused towards celebrating common people and

their struggle that depicts his deep feeling and irony inspiring perspective of lifes most fundamental issue: freedom and hunger,

Hendra also love the land and paint some in his several themes. Hendra later paintings are melancholic and emotional as a result of

the hardship that he experienced during his thirteen years in Bandung Kebon Waru prison. During his imprisoned time he painted

some of his most dreamlike, vibrant and emotional works. He illustrates the sadness and the mystery in a brighter, more saturated,

    expressionistic and abstract.

Dato Sharifah Fatimah is the countrys leading female abstract artist. After graduating from

University Technology Mara (UiTM) in 1971, Dato Sharifah graduated with First Class Honours

for her Bachelors in Fine Arts from Reading University, UK (1976) and then Masters in Fine Arts

from the prestigious Pratt Institute (1978). Upon her return, Dato Sharifah served as an art

curator in the National Art Gallery for 7 years as her career as an artist gained momentum. Today,

Dato Sharifahs works are exhibited internationally and can claim prestigious institutes such as the

Museum of Modern Art, New York, Singapore Art Museum, National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur,

and Bank Negara Malaysia amongst her collectors. In the words of Dato Sharifah, I want the

colours of my paintings to be like the music of the reed, symbolically seen as the externalization

of an inner movement, just as musical tones work through wind instruments from inside out. We

live our true lives in the depths of our hearts, not in the superficial masks of personality which we

Born in 1934, Kuala Lumpur., Ahmad Khalid graduated from Wichester School of Art (U.K) in 1965. He is one of the first Malay artists who fused Jawi script into artistic representation. Influenced by Abstract Expressionism of the American artist, Mark Tobey; his calligraphic works are carefully constructed with coloured lines creating a textural feel by several overlaying of Jawi script on a canvas. With the emergence of the Malay-Islamic revivalist tendencies in 1980s, he began to incorporate recognisable Malay shapes and symbols with his earlier Jawi works.
