Spouses ofdeployed service members aretypically left to manage a householdon their own for months at a time.Neighbors can show their

appreciation by helping with somechores around the house. Offer tomow a neighbor’s lawn or drive aneighbor’s kids to school. Suchgestures might seem small, but theycan go a long way toward alleviatingsome of the stress that spouses ofdeployed service members deal withon a daily basis.

* Support the Wounded WarriorProject. Many service memberssustain physical injuries whiledeployed. The Wounded Warrior

Project works toraise awarenessand enlist thepublic’s help toaddress theneeds of in-jured servicemembers. Menand women whowant to showtheir ap-preciation toinjured servicemembers canwork with the

Though many people are quick torefer to Memorial Day as the unofficialbeginning of summer, the day is muchmore than that. Initially known asDecoration Day, Memorial Day is a day toremember those military members whodied in service of the country.

The origins of Memorial Day remain atopic of debate. In 1966, President LyndonJohnson declared Waterloo, N.Y. as theofficial birthplace of Memorial Day.However, the roots of Memorial Day likelyrun much deeper, as researchers at DukeUniversity note that during the Civil War,organized women’s groups in the southhad begun to decorate the graves of fallensoldiers.

Memorial Day as we know it today canlikely be traced to Charleston, S.C., whereteachers, missionaries and some membersof the press gathered on May 1, 1865 tohonor fallen soldiers. During the Civil War,captured Union soldiers were held at theCharleston Race Course and hundreds diedduring captivity. Upon their deaths,soldiers were buried in unmarked graves.When the Civil War ended, the May Day

gathering was organized as a memorial toall the men who had died during captivity.The burial ground was landscaped, andthose freed as a result of the Civil Warplayed an integral role in the event at theCharleston Race Course.

While the event in Charleston mighthave been the first Memorial Day-typecelebration in the southern United States,General John A. Logan is often cited asinspiring similar events in the north. Ascommander-in-chief of the Grand Army ofthe Republic, a veterans’ organization formen who served in the Civil War, GeneralLogan issued a proclamation just five daysafter the Charleston event that called forDecoration Day to be observed annuallyacross the country. Logan preferred theevent not be held on the anniversary of anyparticular battle, and thus the day wasobserved for the first time on May 30.Celebrating the day in May also wassignificant to event organizers becauseMay is a month when flowers are in bloom,making it easier for observers of theholiday to place flowers on the graves offallen soldiers.

In 1868, events were held at more than180 cemeteries in 27 states, and thosefigures nearly doubled in 1869. By 1890,every northern state officially recognizedDecoration Day as a state holiday. Butsouthern states honored their dead on adifferent day until after World War I, whenthe holiday was changed to recognizeAmericans who died in any war and notjust the Civil War. Nearly every state nowcelebrates Memorial Day, a name for theholiday first used in 1882, on the lastMonday in May. TF145176

Bringing a new baby home from thehospital is a great moment for parents. Butas a child settles into his or her new home,parents look around that home and see less“home” and more “hazard.” Kids are goingto get some bumps and bruises along theway, but it’s still important that parentschildproof their homes to keep suchinstances to a minimum and ensure thattrips and falls don’t lead to something farworse than just some scrapes and tears.

Childproofing a home is typicallymore difficult for first-time parents whodon’t have the trained eye for hazard spotsthat parents of one or more children feel issecond nature. But a practical approach tochildproofing a home can keep kids safeand let parents rest easy knowing theiryoungsters are safe. The following are just ahandful of the many ways parents canmake their homes safer for newborns andyoung children.

* Turn down the water heater. Youngchildren are susceptible to burns from hotwater, even if that water temperature isperfectly fine for the rest of the family.Mayo Clinic recommends setting thetemperature on the hot water heater to

below 120 F and installing antiscalddevices on bathtubs and showerheads. Inaddition, always test the water before yourchild gets into the tub.

* Store potentially dangeroushousehold items high up. Childproof lockson cupboards and drawers can be aneffective deterrent to curious babies, butparents should never underestimate justhow inquisitive some youngsters can be.To safeguard especially curious kids fromtheir own behaviors, always storepotentially harmful household items inhigh cabinets that little boys and girlswon’t be able to reach. Knives, householdcleaners and scissors are just a few itemsthat should be stored well beyond kids’reach until they have clearly demonstratedthey can handle such objects without causefor concern.

* Remove magnets from therefrigerator. Small magnets on arefrigerator often fall off when doors areopen or closed. Babies or toddlers caneasily find such magnets, which thenbecome a choking hazard.
