REAR WHEEL AND HANDRIM ASSEMBLY

Two options of wheel rim are offered with the Breezy range of chairs: Mag style plastic and spokedaluminium rims.

Maintenance of the plastic rim is restricted to cleaning and checking of bearings. With the spoked rim,bent or broken spokes and or damaged rims are possible problems that can occur.

As a consequence of the equipment required to balance spoked wheels following repairs made tothem, it is recommended that a competent trained person best carry out these operations.

Removal of bearings is also restricted to the mag wheel only. These can be removed with a drift andtheir replacements either pressed, or tapped into place with a nylon-faced mallet.

Any damages found to the bearings of the spoked wheel rim hub require the replacement of the entirewheel rim.

Following any alterations made to the quick release axle check to make sure that when axles arelocked in position endplay should not exceed more than 2mm. This can be checked for using a feelergauge between axle nut and hub.

The trueness of the wheel rim should also be checked for signs of distortion. A maximum of 3mm ofdeviation at the rim of the wheel is allowed here.

The degree of "rim rock" within the rear wheel set-up can also affect rolling resistance.Factors affecting rim rock include worn bearings, won axle shafts and excessive endplay on axles.Following adjustment and replacement of these items where necessary, rim rock should be no morethan 5mm when measured at the extreme diameter of the wheel.

HANDRIMS

The handrim supplied on all Breezy wheelchairs are of a powder coated tubular aluminumconstruction.

REMOVAL AND REFITTING OF HANDRIMS

1. Remove screws holding handrim to wheel rim

2. Check handrim for loose rivnuts and or distortion, this should be no more than 2mm over thediameter.

3. Replace handrim if necessary.

4. Re-fit handrim to wheel rim and screw together evenly around rim to avoiddistortion
