Revolutionary Freedom (Destiny Image Publishers) Covenant Orphanage/Church – Pochi Seifu http://covenantorphanages.wordpress.com/

The community based orphan care was started with a goal of improving the well being of orphan children who are between the ages of the early months to 12 years and thus decreasing the burden of HIV/Aids on the children and their families. Founded on March 10, 2005 and registered by Ministry of Justice, presently Covenant orphanage (Y B L M), is taking care of 20 orphans in two different homes and 30 kids in sponsorship program living in the community with their families. Aside their physical, mental and spiritual nurturing, Covenant orphanage endeavors to help its children to be more competent in their day-to-day life by empowering them with extra skills. They will share their needs upon team’s arrival, but we do know that one of their urgent needs is a new vehicle. Due to the nature of this orphanage (a lot of kids are adopted), traditional sponsorship is not an option, but corporate sponsored is greatly needed. Perfect situation would be a church in the US partnering to support the orphanage corporately until they can become self-sustaining. Holeta Orphanage/Home: - community bathrooms, water, hygiene training (est. $7,000 USD) - church renovation (est. $6,000-$8,000 USD) - washing machine - chicken coop (completed!) - study room (computer, desks, chairs, shelves) - community library - grain mill for local women to create economic solutions ($3,000 – completed in July 2011) - water purification system (in process, but still fundraising) - sponsorship Ambo Community:

-‐ new homes for families (re-locate) -‐ bathrooms, water, hygiene -‐ job creation (most of these women have been forced into prostitution not as a moral

decision but because of economic hardship -‐ sponsorship -‐ discipleship

-‐ feeding program at 2 schools (sponsorship) Mission Ethiopia – Dave McIlrath/Ethiopia Guest Home www.missionethiopia.com Mission Ethiopia's vision is to empower individuals (mainly women) to fulfill their calling of glorifying God by working and supporting themselves and their families with the fruit of their work. I have been talking at length with the founder about the projects and the impact these projects are having on their communities. To date there are 4 locations, 56 women and 6 supervisors. The locations are in Kore, Bole Bulbula and Holeta. One Child created our own exclusive line of jewelry with these amazing women that will be available for the team to purchase and support the women and One Child. MOWYCA (Ministry of Women, Youth and Children’s Affairs) randomly visited one of the locations and raved about the project and concept. We found out about a major need these women have that would increase their productivity incredibly. They are in need of a kiln that will bake the ceramics and in the research and negotiation, we found that it can be provided for about $4,000 USD. We are also looking to partner with Mission Ethiopia on a project (chicken and fish farm) that will bring jobs and resources into Korah, a leper community. We are especially excited about this and the brainstorming and proposal have just been submitted and will be our largest project so far – as it will take an estimated $18,000. This is our current featured project on our website. - water purification project and hygiene training (completed in Kore in July 2011, follow up in October of 2011) Hope for the Hopeless Drop-in Center – Fekadu Shenuke www.hope4hopeless.org Privately owned, it is a short-term home. Children (streets kids, mostly boys) are brought by local police or they come in on their own or Hope for the Hopeless staff goes out to find them so they can have a safe place to wash, get food, have shelter, spiritual guidance and even get counseling.

They have extensive records on each child and try to reconcile children to their families, but if that is not safe or possible they go through a program to prepare them to go to an orphanage. These kids have been through unbelievable circumstances, but if they choose to stay in the center, they have hope for a future. Most of the children are ages 8 and up and have come from a hard lifestyle of living on the streets. Typically, there are only about 15 kids at this drop-in center at a given time. They are also building a new boarding school for these children. We work with this location in partnership with Children’s Hopechest. Kombolcha/Grace Baptist Church – Pastor Ato Teferra Over 300-400 kids are in desperate need right now, hundreds more that need help also. Projects needed to help facilitate are:

-‐ an expanded kitchen -‐ bathrooms and showers -‐ expand the church -‐ sponsorship through Children’s Hopechest -‐ fence -‐ food, school supplies, clothes, shoes, etc. -‐ water purification system (in process, but still fundraising)

We are working with Children’s Hopechest on this location and projects. Embracing Hope Ethiopia - Jerry and Christy Shannon www.embracinghopethiopia.com They have started an amazing ministry in the Kore area of Addis Ababa. Their mission is to partner with God, individuals and the local church in ministering with the poor, orphans and vulnerable children (and their families) of Ethiopia using compassionate, holistic practices that promote sustainability, transformation, community, and Christian discipleship which invades all areas of life for this and future generations. The first phase that has recently launched is a day care center for about 30 children, so that their mothers are empowered to work and more easily care for their families. Kore (Korah): A colony of 129,000 people who are descendents of lepers, this community has only 1 church and 75 years after it’s establishment, they are still considered outcasts with the stigma of leprosy though it has been mostly eradicated. Many of them are forced to search for their food in the dump. The dump is in the process of being closed down. Their needs are job creation, clean water, bathrooms, food, educational supplies, medical treatment, clothing, shoes, etc. fashionABLE - Barrett and Rachel Ward www.livefashionable.com fashionABLE creates sustainable business for women in Africa. Our commitment as a non-profit is

to the development of people — fashionABLE works with women who have been exploited due to the effects of poverty. So, when you purchase a scarf you are providing jobs, and then we send the profits back to holistically rehabilitate more women. This is the beauty of non-profit….Scarves provide jobs, profits provide restoration. In Ethiopia, prostitution is often linked with deep levels of generational poverty and financial hopelessness. Lacking meaningful resources and a sense of hope, many women resort to prostitution as a means of supporting themselves and their families. These women are often desperate to leave the sex industry but remain trapped by a lack of opportunity and rehabilitative support.

“Women At Risk” is an organization we have partnered with to rehabilitate former sex workers. This work requires not only getting these women off the streets, but also providing them counseling and helping them find alternate means of income – this is why we created fashionABLE. Our ultimate goal is to help these women become healthy and productive members of society.

Headquarters for scarf production are in Addis Ababa, the capital city. Scarves are made by women in the program, as well as other Ethiopian sources that include women and men, to help meet demand. While being supported by those sources, fashionABLE is continually funding the training of more women in order to employ as many women as demand will allow. All the while, we are meeting the mission that your purchase of a fashionABLE scarf continues to create sustainable business for more women in Africa. Kids Care Child Welfare Association – Aster Fesseha www.kccwa.org.et Aster is the founder of Kid’s Care and an outspoken activist for the plight of the orphan. She has helped facilitate over 1,000 adoptions for families all over the world. She has started a new school and community center in Debre Birhan and look to develop this farther. She is one of the most experienced when it comes to the nature of the orphan crisis and helping find solutions for the needs. Kidmia Foundation – Aschalew Abebe www.kidmia.org The Kidmia Foundation is a non-governmental organization dedicated to working with families, local churches, and communities to enable orphaned and vulnerable children in rural Ethiopia to reach their fullest and highest potential by tackling the root causes of poverty and vulnerability.

Our vision is to see orphaned and vulnerable children released from physical, economic, and spiritual poverty, reach their highest and fullest potential, be reunited or placed with a gospel-loving Ethiopian family, become constructive and productive citizens of their country, and enjoy life

in all its fullness. Kidmia fulfills this vision through the provision of comprehensive and holistic care and support that brings God-honoring, lasting, and holistic change to the lives of orphaned and vulnerable children. As followers of Jesus Christ, we are motivated by God’s love to serve all children regardless of religion, race, ethnicity or gender. We currently care for 25 children in our Child Transition Center in Gunchire, Ethiopia and an additional 35 children in the surrounding community. We are led by a dedicated Ethiopian staff in country and supported by a volunteer board in the Dallas/Fort Worth area in the United States. In addition, they have completed a pastor’s and leader’s education and conference with Seed Adoption to educate the local churches through out Ethiopia about their Biblical responsibility to take care of the orphan. This will be one of the primary ways that the seemingly impossible number of orphans can be reached – through the body of Christ being made aware and acting in compassion beyond cultural background and limitations.

Ethiopia Adoptive Families Association – Caleb/Rebecca David & Duni Zenaye www.ethiopiaadoptivefamilies.org Our mission is to engage and activate adoptive families of Ethiopian children to affect long term, sustainable orphan care in Ethiopia through domestic Ethiopian adoption/foster care awareness, family-based care and charitable giving projects in Ethiopia through membership in this association. While families are giving back to their children’s birth country in various ways, our mission is to also provide services, awareness and updates to US families to support the family and learn more about their child’s heritage and background. This association will also give adoptive families more voice in the formation of future adoption policies.

Focused in a rural area outside Addis Ababa, this family seeks holistic solutions for this

impoverished community. Short-term teams that also have a long-term relationship focus are

welcome to come and spend 3-7 days at a time living and working in the community.

After School Program: 6BE loves our 30 children as if they were our own. Some come from stable

families, most do not. Most families in Dahley are just a day away from being on the streets and

some have just come from the streets of Addis where the begged for each meal. While in our

program we serve a hot meal, teach English, draw, listen to music and work on other academics-

We train our teachers on a regular basis, send them to English School and encourage them to think

outside the box. We also meet with our parents and families to hear their concerns and dreams.

Our afterschool is a community based holistic approach to working with the folks of Dahley. The Library Health Center: a community center with scheduled activities a couple days of week which include: English classes, health education and activities with the community children such as singing, reading, and playing games. A typical day the community program will work with over 30 children from the community!

Community Projects: Some of community projects include: giving 2 hens and one rooster to a

family. This year we saw many of the hens produce chicks, which allowed the current owner to

then bless someone less fortunate with the gift of new hens! The chickens provide eggs to eat and

the potential to sell the surplus. We also are developing a small chicken farm to produce enough

eggs to feed our program children and families in critical situations. One aspect of visiting Dahley

is helping to create and serve a community meal. This allows the very hungry to enjoy a meal

while we get to all be in community together.

If you spend time in Dahley your time will be spent on the ground with the people of Dahley living

and serving along side them in every aspect of life while focusing on efforts to teach English. It will

not be an easy time, you will be broken and probably shed many tears, but we promise you that

you will leave a transformed person with an example of love that the people of Dahley will show

you that will go beyond your wildest imagination. One drop of water changes the entire ocean-be part of the change to create a world of Love and Peace. *New Projects: In Partnership Development stage with Miskaye Children’s Welfare Association and 6BE, awaiting documentation and board approval.

The Alem House: One Child Campaign project Vision: To accept 10-12 girls, hire a staff of about 3-5 and provide a place of refuge where all their needs are met physically, emotionally and spiritually. The goal is to invest more time and effort into a fewer number of girls for greater impact. The girls would have responsibilities around the home, as we want it to feel like an actual home where they can learn life skills. We also want to be able to provide some counseling, discipleship and teach them trades. *the “cap” age of 18 is what we will say, however, if any girls are still furthering their education and we see the benefits and fruit in their lives – they will be allowed to stay longer.

-‐ License amendment in partnership with Covenant Church -‐ staffing: cook, guard, cleaner, housemom/translator, One Child rep -‐ selection of girls by the kebele, community and Pochi -‐ home to rent -‐ Sadly, in sponsorship programs and even adoption, the older kids end up getting the shaft

in lieu of a cute, younger child. Of course, that is valuable but in the Western sponsorship mindset – we don’t realize the harm that we can cause. We met older girls that the church was sponsoring because no one else would. In Ethiopia, age 16 is the oldest adoptable age. It was even more earnest on our minds because these girls live in the tiny community that is comprised of women and their families that have been forced into prostitution to put food on the table. If someone is not willing to step up for them, the future of their worlds are beyond bleak. They will get forced into early marriage, slavery and most likely, the sex trade.
