Birthdays can be fun social milestones. Eating out with close friends. Birthday cards both traditional, and on social media. Recognition at a Homeowners Meeting. At the same time, birthdate information is private, personal information protected under privacy laws, even if you’ve let your friends and neighbors know both the date and your age. For instance, although the CountryPlace Oce uses homeowners’ birthdates to meet legal requirements for our 55-and-older community status, access to that information does not give Board members or any oce personnel the right to possess or use it for any other purpose, even to wish you a happy birthday.

Ditto all other “personally identiable information” (PII) – any data that could potentially identify a specic individual, ranging from Social Security numbers and driver’s license numbers to phone numbers and e-mail addresses. Whenever CountryPlace collects PII for any ocial business – whether it be for HOA assessments or for Board-authorized distribution of the eBlast – the Association strives to protect the privacy of that information. PII must not be used by any individual for any personal use.

Homeowners can help the Association protect your privacy. Stay alert. And inform the Board if you suspect improper possession or use of your PII.

Stay involved, stay close, and stay forever young!

Some people have been asking what we are going to do about the gazebo? It was a cute addition to our community. The gazebo was purchased as a kit with donated money and installed by special projects approximately 6 years ago. When the wind blew it down, it was discovered that the galvanized steel supporting it was rusted out and the building could have been pushed over by hand. The company no longer makes this unit. I wonder why. If the community wishes it replaced and since it was a temporary structure. I would suggest following the same procedure of donations. Home Depot has a kit made of Cedar with a 15-year limited warranty which would cost around $2600. Donated improvements are the CountryPlace way.

The Board has come under criticism for planning to make improvements to the community. Apparently, the feeling is that our buildings will last forever if we budget for enough duct tape and better paint to hold them together. The feeling is that depreciation is only an accounting gimmick and our buildings were built well enough that they will last forever. Every morning I wake up feeling some aches and pains and look in the mirror and realize my body has depreciated.

Why do you think our buildings are any dierent? Why should we ever consider anything new and more modern? I’m reminded of some older people in my youth who couldn’t understand why anyone would waste money on indoor plumbing when they had a perfectly good outhouse, a hand pump on the well and if the water bucket leaked, you could always patch it with chewing gum.

When you have visitors, how many of you are proud to show them the Lake View Lodge as a shining example of the community you have invested in? The Lake View Lodge, like the gazebo, was built as a temporary building 37 years ago. Special Projects has been laboring for many years trying to preserve it. Do you explain to the visitors that because we borrowed money to create the nest golf course in the area and consequently $8.86 of our $148.50 dues per month is going to repay the loan and that this expenditure is draining the life’s blood of this community dry? Do some of you also explain to the visitors that you are proud to be a part of a group in the community that is demanding that no improvements to the community be made until this loan is paid o no matter how long that may take?

Sandy and I moved here 11 years ago. What improvements have been made to the community property during those 11 years? Since then, we built a security fence along McHard Road with donated money. We put in the new sidewalk lighting, again with donated money and Special Project labor. We put in the aforementioned gazebo with donations and Special Project labor. The social hall was not an improvement but a necessary repair because of faulty construction. Even that involved Special Projects acting as general contractor and provided much of the labor. At that time there were people who wanted the building torn down rather than waste any of their money on repairs.

Ah yes, the new cross buck fence on the driving range and the townhouses on CountryPlace Boulevard was paid for by the community but it was to replace existing depreciated fencing. The fountain in the lake on hole 9 was also done with donated money and Special Project labor. Expansion of the storage building was by Special Projects. We also are replacing the golf cart path with donations and Special Projects labor. The golf course renovation is the only major improvement that comes to mind. What happened? Those lazy bums in special projects and selsh donors let us down on this one.

According to some, that improvement should never have happened. They are irate that they have to participate in the cost. The sense of community pride seems limited to the very few who are willing to donate more than their rightful share either in treasure or labor while the rest of the community enjoys the fruits of these donations.

Because they have been spoiled rotten by this generosity, some seem to be adamantly opposed to sharing nancially in actual improvements.

I sincerely hope the majority of this community is interested in making this a better place to live and will not allow it to rot away because of the objections of a vocal minority.

Summer heat is in full swing - time to make sure your lawn is watered at least once each week along with your plants and shrubs. Also check for mold and mildew on sides of your house as it grows rapidly in hot and humid weather.

We do request each property look neat, clean, and well groomed year round. Visual impact says so much about you and your property and it does aect our community. Simplicity in your landscape is more attractive than congestion and much easier to care for.

Please walk out to the street in front of your house and look to see how easy or dicult it is to read your address numbers. This is what an emergency responder will or will not see. Numbers should be at least four (4) inches high and colored a contrasting color to the background where they will be placed.

Thank you.

Hi everyone, “Happy Dog Days”.

News Items:

The frequency and severity of rain has impacted the scheduled lawn maintenance. Mowing on wet grass can produce ruts and unleveled cutting surfaces. Let us adjust to the higher ‘GREEN” grass until such time Mother Nature will allow conditions to resume back to regular mowing cycles.

The annual painting of the Townhomes is underway in Country Grove Circle. This process has been impacted by the rains as well and will be back on schedule soon, provided conditions are favorable.

CGCA Meeting dates and times have been revised with HOA Meetings now on a quarterly basis. Next Board Meeting is 9-24-2018 6 PM Conference Room.

Are you called to serve? The CGCA Board has upcoming elections in November.

Treasurer Report

By Dick Penning

Singles CornerBy Jewel Johnson

Hello to the new singles who have stopped by and taken a tour of the neighborhood. After the tour you’ve turned on your Wi-Fi and said yes to making a wise decision. It’s a nice place to live so “welcome”. I know we had a Happy 4th even with the rain. Activities and events are already in place for you. Friendly neighbors are inviting you to go. We don’t stop laughing because we age, we age because we stop laughing. We are the Singles group and we welcome you to come to our meeting in the Lakeview Lodge, Thursday, August 9th at 6:30pm. We have a dinner planned for you as our special guest. Don’t bring anything. However, if you want to be in the door prize drawing, bring $1. Carolyn and Jewel will greet you there.

We made a mid-west vac trip over the 4th of July and saw many great reworks displays, only to return to CountryPlace and catch up on the social media reworks. What a show that has been. While I highly support open discussions, it’s my hope that this is not becoming overly stressful to our residents as all the issues can be worked out with careful thinking, planning and dialogue, the lack of which seems to be the issue. By time this newsletter goes to print, I am sure other issues will arise. So, in the spirit of open communication let me share how I feel on several of the CPMCA issues.

Egret Audit—CPMCA requested and awaits results.

Water Well—Board passed motion to proceed with second well but no formal bid received yet.

Lakeview Lodge Rework—Board approved $9,000 for study but no report completed that I have seen.

Additional Parking—if we are going to have a public Golf Course and it appears outside play is what keeps the course open I assume we should have a place for the visitors to park.

Construction Loan Pre-payment - without pre-payment we will not have the past loan paid o before the next round of reconstruction is needed. If we want a Golf Course, we need to pay the price.

CPMCA Reserves—the board needs to decide on the cash reserves needed as part of the 2019 budget process, I am open to resident comments.

First Services—as some of you are aware we have a new rep at FS and I am hopeful that we can move several issues forward. Thanks for your support and look forward to continuing to work for you as a board member. [email protected]

We will discuss the time the limo will pick you up for your ight, specications for suitcase size and weight, packing needs, Euros needed for the trip and tips, and all general details for our great trip to Portugal and Spain.

Branson travelers will have a required meeting on September 13 to obtain all details for their October trip. The last date to cancel the Branson trip without penalty is August 17.

by Sandy Eliason, Jan Kolosseus, & Barb Hamilton

Women’s Discussion will conduct a Candidates’ Forum on August 9th from 4:00p to 5:00p in the social hall. All residents are invited to hear the background of each candidate that has prepared them for the oce they are seeking. They may share what skills and insights they will bring to the CPMCA Board. There may be time for questions from the audience.

Coee and lemonade will be served. This is your chance to be an educated voter.

The traditional weekly meetings of Women’s Discussion will resume on September 13th.

Our July 6th meeting was called to order by Linda Kitay, introducing our two newest members Peggy Eiss and Sally Reagan. Carolyn Coody reported that we donated around 98 pounds of canned goods to Christian Helping Hands in the last month and reminded everyone that toiletries, makeup and household items are needed, especially during the summer months. We were asked to contact Patsy Gross if we know of anyone who is ill or has had a death in the family. She will send a card on behalf of our membership.

Marilyn Zapata reported that she is now receiving recipes for our cookbook and will continue to accept them through the end of October. Marilyn took pictures of our July birthday girls!

Our August birthdays include: Linda Bean, Rita Combs, Sue Davis, Patsy Gross, Sharon Haley, Nancy Karr, Georgia Kness, Ann Landry, Peggy Parker, Honey Schachter, Cindy Snorf, Sandy Sparks, Liz Tullis, and Mary Zeller.

Our August 3rd meeting will be held at the Olive Garden. Please check the bulletin board area at the Carriage House for the sign-up sheet for this and other activities. Other upcoming events include the trip to Natchitoches, LA in December, with 3 spots available and a Red Hat cruise to Russia and Scandinavia in April, 2019. Please contact Carolyn Brooks for additional cruise information.

THANK YOU TO ALL 60 PLUS (NUMBER, NOT JUST AGE) DARING PEOPLE WHO VENTURED INTO THE KARAOKE THIRD SUMMERTIME GATHERING LAST JULY 2nd. THE NEXT (FOURTH) KARAOKE MEETING WILL BEGIN AT 6:30 ON THE 6th OF AUGUST, 2018, IN THE SOCIAL HALL.

The saying is “The third time’s the Charm”! Well, we sadly advise it was not so. We had more people but less singing due to time and organizational delays by your new crew. That was regrettable. People need more singing time by our getting music queued up faster, and more time eciency so the following changes will begin to be implemented:

FIRST IN, FIRST UP TO SING - We will begin to number the request slips as received, but request that you only turn in 1 request to start. If you want to sing another song, bring your next request slip up when you are called up to sing your 1st song. We will add the next number available onto your 2nd request and place it last in the request list’s order at that time. This will allow most people to get their 1st song in before we have repeat performers.

FAIR, EARLY IN-EARLY UP - This should prevent us from misplacing requests, overlooking personal disks that have been brought in, ling disks away needed for another performer and, of course, any possibility of playola.

We will try to start warm-ups by 5:45 pm for people who may want to hear a song early to check arrangement, key, words, whatever while we try to adjust sound levels & microphone placements. Performances should start by 6:30 pm and run through 8:30 pm. We provide a choice of music that can have the key changed to t your range. Some new discs will be added and you can bring your own song disk(s). If the key is wrong, we can start your song over.

We want and you deserve an ecient setting for Karaoke. We will try this new method and invite suggestions for needed changes to make this a fun, pleasurable and, for some, worthy challenge to try your voice at singing Karaoke.

Please call (918) 809-1019 for general information, with good suggestions/requests or to ask reasonable questions.

Tricks to Strengthen YourMemory (Part 1)

Never lose your keys….by pausing for eight seconds! Simply focusing for eight seconds while you’re putting down your keys – instead of multitasking by checking the mail will give your brain the time it needs to snap an image of exactly where those keys are! This trick works for remembering other things like where you parked the car and even remembering names!

Give your brain some vacation time each day by taking a relaxing bubble bath or have a cup of tea. It’s good medicine that helps your brain seal recent experiences into long-term memory. In fact, not having regular time-outs is proven to make it harder for your brain to retrieve important information in the future.

Reverse brain aging….by taking a leisure stroll! The seat of memory in your brain tends to shrink after the age of 50, but fortunately physical activity can stop that! By take a 20-minute walk three times a week is shown to help reverse brain aging and ramp up recall by stretching your muscles and improving your heart health, which both enhance your memory!

Go for a springtime stroll outdoors! Researchers found that simply walking in a lush park or along a tree-lined path is enough to elevate mood and improve short-term memory. This is Mother Nature’s calming inuence on our nervous system, slashing stress and triggering the release of happy brain chemicals! Also, mute the music! Soak up all the sights and sounds without distraction and lower your levels of cortisol and higher levels of feel good dopamine!

Barb Hamilton -Candidate for Vice President I was born and raised in South Texas and have lived in the Houston area for 50 plus years. I moved to CountryPlace in 2008 with husband, Paul. Together we have 3 children and 3 grandchildren. We attend New Hope Church. I retired after 34 years with Occidental Chemical Company where I served a chairperson on the annual picnic committees, Christmas parties, and held several positions on the Recreation Association through the years. I nally found CountryPlace and promptly fell in love with the community. I have a degree in Communication. I served in the US Navy for my country and received an honorable discharge. I attended college at the University of Houston. If elected to Vice President of the HOA I will work tirelessly to make CountryPlace better and better every day.

Ruth Winsor -Candidate for Secretary Hi, I’m Ruth Ann Winsor. I’ve been a resident of CountryPlace for 4 years and I’m running for secretary of our CountryPlace Community Association Board of Directors. I enjoy living here in CountryPlace. I am now active in our community by serving as secretary of the Red Hat Mamas and as a member of Merv Eliason’s committee to determine the future of the Lake View Lodge. I also spend my afternoons volunteering as a tutor for special needs students. I would like to share my time and talents by serving on the Board of directors as secretary. I have four Bachelor of Science Degrees and two Master of Science Degrees. I spent thirty-two years as a private school principal where I learned the ne art of mediation. I also had to construct a ve-year budget consisting of maintaining school grounds, hiring both professional and support sta, and purchasing equipment and books. I also had to annually present to my school board a long-term capital-outlay plan necessary to maintain the school buildings, grounds and equipment. It is my goal to successfully serve our community with integrity. I personally hope that I can accomplish this as well as Jan Kolosseus did during her term. Thank you for your consideration.

Grace L. Butler, PhD -Candidate for Personnel and Policy I hold a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration, New York University; Management Certication from the Institute of Educational Management, Harvard University; Master of Music, Northwestern University, Evanston Ill.; and a BS in Music, Xavier University, New Orleans, La. I’ve held faculty appointments at the Ohio State University, University of North TX and Texas A& M University. At the University of Houston, I served as

Associate VP for Faculty Aairs. I now hold the distinctive honor of Professor Emeritus from that institution. I am a Stage III colon cancer survivor and in 2002 I founded Hope Through Grace, Inc., a non-prot organization that focuses on colorectal cancer prevention through health education and by underwriting the cost of baseline colonoscopies for working poor, medically underserved uninsured people in this community. At this stage of my life I wanted safety, a caring and fun-loving community, and less time in my daily commute; thus, I decided CountryPlace was the place for me. That was over 20 years ago; here, I found all. And now seek to serve friends and neighbors in CountryPlace Master Community as Personnel and Policy Director. I believe my education and background experiences would be a great t for the position which I seek your support.

Linda Benson -Candidate for Personnel and Policy I’m a 67 year old native Texan, born and raised in San Antonio, TX. I’ve been a homeowner in our CountryPlace community since October 2014, moving to Pearland from Bellaire, TX. I attended public schools in San Antonio, and graduated from high school in 1969. Professionally, following graduation from nursing school, I became a Registered Nurse (RN). I’ve had an active and varied, full-time career in nursing since 1972. I became a retiree of The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in 2015, having worked for the UT System since 1993, as well as a nal 4-year stint of state service with Texas Health and Human Services, auditing patient care records of Medicaid recipients for fraud, abuse, and waste. My career aorded me experience in nursing management with responsibility for teamwork, collaborative policy and procedure development, and quality management of sta performance in the healthcare workplace. My professional duties shaped and honed my skills in cooperative team building, listening with a compassionate ear, forming goal directed objectives, and following a project to a positive, satisfactory outcome. I know these skills will transfer easily to benet the role of Director of Personnel and Policy for the CountryPlace Master Community Association. I have four children, 2 girls and 2 boys, ranging in age from 35-45 years, all with their own active professional careers. I was married to their father for 35 years. I’ve been single since 2005. In addition to retirement, 1 currently enjoy the role of “Granny” to 3 beautiful grandchildren who are 17, 6, and 3 years of age. I’ve been an avid student of ballroom dance for 15 years. I also enjoy reading, creative writing, poetry, cooking, and sewing of all types, especially quilting. As a healthcare professional, I’m acutely aware of the advantages of better health and increased longevity provided by residing in a safe and active senior community. I personally participate in our excellent activities through the Thursday Quilters Group, and attendance at CountryPlace plays, concerts, and dance socials as often as my schedule will allow. I strongly value the resource our lovely neighborhood provides to the residents within its borders, and I can denitely make an active contribution to its continuing health and stability.

Sandra Gumina -Current Rules and Regulations Director I was born and raised up north. That would be Houston, of course! My career spanned 56 years and eventually I retired from MD Anderson but stay involved through its retirement association. I raised two daughters, Julie and Vanessa, who now live in south Louisiana and Dallas, respectively. You will often hear me sing accolades of my three grandchildren. I love to travel, read, play bridge and enjoy my family and friendships.

Bill Horton -Rules and Regulations I worked in the oil business for 23 years and then owned my own oil related business for 10 years. Judy and I moved to CountryPlace in 1994. After we moved here, I continued to work for 2 more years, retired, then became active in the community. I worked in the Green Thumb Club, Players and Special Projects. I have served 4 years as Director of Operations and 2 years on the CP Egret Board. I have taken o a year and now would love to serve my community as Director of Rules and Regulations.

Susan Templeton -Candidate for Architectural Control Prior to moving to CountryPlace 2 ½ years ago, I had lived in Houston since 1991. I am employed by the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. I’m applying for the Architectural Control position because I’m interested in keeping and improving the value of our area. Prior to moving out here I lived in the Hampton Oaks Townhouses in West University in Houston. I was on the Board of Directors for more than 8 years. It was my responsibility to walk the area on a weekly basis and then discuss items that needed work with the Board of Directors as well as the management company. Safety and maintenance were at the top of our “work” list. It was also a priority to see that the rules and regulations were followed. New residents weren’t always familiar with the concept of “community living” and the rules governing such an environment. This is the rst opportunity I’ve had to take part in our community and make a contribution. The area of architectural control is an area with which I am familiar and have a great deal of experience. Membership in the board would allow me to make new friends, become active in this community and be an ambassador for my new home -CountryPlace.
