IntroductionOpen your mind to a new way of thinking about food, diet, and other habits of life
This Roadmap to The Master Cleanse is meant to outline the major steps to
The Master Cleanse from a very high level of detail. There is much more to
learn about each of these following topics. Fortunately there are many
resources for us (most of which are free), so that we might better
understand this remarkable process towards long-term health and lifestyle
choices --while loosing weight and gaining clarity along the way. This
Roadmap is not meant to explain these finer details. Please see the website
TheMasterCleanse.org or more information.
My Master Cleanse Experience
My friend Paul introduced me to The Master Cleanse. I walked into his office
and he was drinking this crazy looking juice. He told me about it, and I threw
at him all what I thought I knew about health, diet and fitness --after all, I
was a professional athlete who had trained for a living. I thought I knew it
all.
It turns out, most of my initial reactions to The Master Cleanse were wrong,
or better yet, let's just say, I was misinformed and holding on to some
passively adopted ideas about something I really knew very little about.
In fact, the first time I did The Master Cleanse, I did it from the word of my
friend Paul. No books. No websites.
I Made Mistakes, Then I Found a System
My biggest mistake the first few times were: 1 - Not doing adequate
research and checking a few sources. 2 - Not drinking the lemon juice fresh.
I made the lemonade in one big batch. I now know better (as you will too, as
explained further in this report).
Even those mistakes aside, the biggest help to successfully completing and
maximizing the Master Cleanse Experience was the understanding of what
to expect: When and what would happen to me.
Thatʼs why I created The Master Cleanse Roadmap. It outlines the process
with some standard naming system based on tens of thousands of
questions, concerns, praise and other comments from the website at
TheMasterCleanse.org
I coined the phrase Ease-In and Ease-Out so that it was easily understood
what those segments of the process where
I also created a Day-By-Day naming convention to cover the daily trials and
tribulations The Master Cleanser experiences.
The Master Cleanse is Life Changing.
We all want to be healthy, and of optimal weight, full of energy, ready and
excited to live a long life, full of productive life choices.
The Master Cleanse changed my life in more than one way, and I realized it
changes everyone elseʼs as well. I was compelled to share my experience,
and how I came to understand the truth of The Master Cleanse, and why its
so well received, and held in such regard by most who try it.
Almost 4 years ago I published the website with some simple instructions. I
continued to clarify my understanding of the cleanse by doing it 6 more
times, and interviewing the 2 leading authors on the topic: Peter Glickman
and Tom Woloshyn.
The results I have seen is the amazing growth in both the website, and the
interest in the topic of The Master Cleanse and cleansing in general.
Something so amazing, should be free from overpriced information, and
over-hyped language either for sales purposes or from fanatic belief either
for or against the concepts The Master Cleanse is based on.
5,000,000 Visits and 15,000 Comments later
After Millions of views of my website and tens of thousands of questions and
comments, and words of support. And after the feedback from Thousands of
Ebooks sold and Group Experience Cleansers, I know 1 thing to be true.
The Master Cleanse Works. People love it. You feel great afterwords, both
physically and mentally. You lose weight and look amazing. You will want
people to try it too. And when they do, you can give them this roadmap so
that they might have better luck getting through the maze of mis-
information, and mis-understanding that plagues those who start The Master
Cleanse un-prepared.
This Roadmap and Report are my gift to you, free of charge and free of
restrictions.
Thanks so much for your interest in The Master Cleanse. Please take care,
and responsibility for you own SELF, and Health, and you will be sure to
know if The Master Cleanse is right for you.
What Is The Master CleanseOpen your mind to a new way of thinking about food, diet, and other habits of life
The Master Cleanse is such a simple program. First, squeeze Fresh Lemon
Juice, then add Rich Maple Syrup, and Cayenne Pepper into Pure Water.
Drink a minimum of six to twelve glasses throughout the day whenever one
is hungry. Take a laxative, morning and evening; or instead of the morning
laxative, you can do the Salt Water Flush. Every day of The Master Cleanse
that you overcome the psychological need to eat, you feel a growing sense
of control that motivates you to complete the process. The Master Cleanse
is by far my favorite of the Detox Diet Recipes.
There are three phases to The Master Cleanse: Ease-In, The Lemonade
Diet, Ease-Out. Each of these will be explained in detail, and it is very
important to follow these directions carefully. If you read closely you
shouldnʼt have many questions.
The Ease-In step of The Master Cleanse (Pre-Diet Routine) is not as
important as the Ease-Out (Post-Diet Routine). In fact, you could skip the
Ease-In completely and begin directly with The Lemonade Diet at anytime.
In my experience, however, beginning The Lemonade Diet with the Ease-In
routine not only prepares your stomach for less food, but your mind as well.
I find by doing the Ease-In, the first two days of the Diet are not as
shocking, and the impulse to eat is therefore more manageable. Use the 3
days of the Ease-In to gather your ingredients for the Master Cleanser
Recipe.
Regardless of whether you choose to Ease-In or go right to The Lemonade
Diet, your Master Cleanse Kit will contain all of your ingredients, tools,
equipment, and appliances that you will need during the Master Cleanse
and The Lemonade Diet.
Before The Master CleanseWhat to learn, and do before you start The Master Cleanse
When you are considering doing The Master Cleanse, ask yourself a few
questions: Do you want to loose weight? Are you ready for a change in your
diet? Are you fighting a disease of some kind? Are you certain your lifestyle
has led to a toxic buildup from too many drive-throughs and not enough
real, raw food. This will help you understand what you want to accomplish
Understand What to ExpectMaster Cleanse Side Effects are just part of the cleanse --They’re a good thing!
Symptoms of Detox: Positive and Negative
Many of the following symptoms are usually present while Master
Cleansing. You can expect the good and the bad. Just realize, that the bad
doesn't mean you are getting sicker, it means you are getting healthier. The
negative symptoms of The Master Cleanse are know as Healing Events (or
crisis). The toxins make you sick on the way in, AND on the way out. You
likely were sick as a result of ingesting them, and you will feel the results of
passing them out of your system as well. These negative symptoms pass,
and the more positive ones remain.
Cleansing Effects (positive symptoms of detox)
• Better Sleep• More Energy• Clarity of Mind• Positive Outlook• Greater Flexibility• Weight Loss• Freedom From Addictions• Increased Strength• Reduced Swelling and Pain• Improved Skin
Healing Events (negative symptoms of detox)
• Headaches• Joint Pain• Low Energy• General Malaise• Flashbacks - Feelings or Tastes• Menstrual Cycle - Darker• Nausea• Bad Breath• White Tongue• Smelly Bowel Movements• Sinuses Draining• Mucous in throat• Acne and rashes
Choosing a Time to Start The Master CleanseNow is Always a Good Time / There is Never a Good Time
Now's Always a Good Time: It's never a good time
I tell people that now is always a good time. I ask them if there is ever a
good time to be sick, to which they reply no, of course not. Exactly. In other
words, don't wait even longer until you're really sick. Use it as a
preventative measure. Just do the cleanse. Donʼt procrastinate. Don't find
excuses. -Tom Woloshyn, author of The Complete Master Cleanse
Planning The Calendar
I believe the best time on the calendar month to do The Master Cleanse
starts on a Monday (if you don't do the Ease-In, and Friday before if you
do). I like the milestones falling on the particular days. I find it very helpful
psychologically that I only have 1 full weekend on the Lemonade and a
short easy second week.
• Ease-In - 3 Days: Optional - Start on a Friday• Lemonade Diet - 10 Days: Start on a Monday, End 10 days later on
Wednesday• Ease-Out - 3 Days: Start on Thursday end on Saturday in time for a night
out and regular eating Sunday
I believe the best time in the calendar year to do the Master Cleanse is after
major holidays of the 4 seasons: Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall.
• Winter - January: First Monday following New Years Day.• Spring - April: First Monday following Easter Sunday• Summer - July: First Monday following US July 4th and Canadian July
1st.• Fall - October: First Monday following US Columbus Day and Canadian
Thanksgiving.
Considering the calendar drastically reduces the cases of "The Suddenlys"
--where suddenly people remember a birthday or event that falls in the
middle of The Master Cleanse and causes them to either not start, or to
quit.
Gather Your Master Cleanse KitWhat, where and when to buy your Master Cleanse Kit Ingredients and Equipment
Gather up all everything in your kit BEFORE you start. This includes:
ingredients, tools, utensils, appliances and other items that you will require
during the Lemonade Diet as well as the Ease-In and Ease-Out.
Ingredients and Materials for your Master Cleanse Kit
Your ingredients are the most crucial aspect of The Master Cleanse. You
can fake your way through not having a juicer, but you can't get by without
lemons or limes. There 3 primary sources for you ingredients are:
• Local Health Food Stores• Big Cities have Whole Foods• Amazon.com
The Master Cleanse Kit List
" " "1. Lemonade Ingredients
⁃ Lemons: Always available - Organic is not vital. Use limes as alternatives
⁃ Maple Syrup: Any grade will work. Grade A, B, C and D (The lower the better). Just do not use Table syrup.
⁃ Cayenne Pepper: Called the Master Herb for a reason.⁃ Water: Order a water filter from amazon if you can't buy pre-filtered
water.2. Detox Items
⁃ Laxative: Tablet is best. Try Stomach Ease (Tablet), Swiss Kriss (Tablet) or Smoothe Move (most common)
⁃ Sea Salt: Non-Iodized, NOT Table Salt.⁃ Herbal Peppermint Tea (and others --non caffeinated)
3. Tools and Utensils⁃ Juicers: Hand juicers are the most cost-effective. Power juicers help
with Post-Cleanse diets.⁃ Table Spoon Measures: Indispensable.⁃ Cups and Bottles: Dark Glass cups of a perfect size for each drink,
the concentrate or water.⁃ Bio-metric devices: Heart rate, blood pressure, BMI, PH Testers⁃ Journals: to document the process, emotions, challenges and
triumphs during the Master Cleanse
Starting The Master CleanseYou’re all set, now Start Right by doing the following:
The Ease-in portion of The Master Cleanse is important to me for several
reasons. First, it helps me develop the habit of a more natural diet. I donʼt
want to adopt a rule-filled lifestyle such as vegan or vegetarian, but I do
want to limit processed foods, dairy products and red meats. I know that
juicing is a great way to get vital veggies. It follows, therefore, that if I
choose to eat this way strictly before I begin my cleanse, I am a little more
likely to continue the habit in my Post-Cleanse Lifestyle.
The Ease-in can be eliminated, as it is not even suggested in the original
text. This is my preference, but for the most part, people opt-to, and are
happy they did.
You could also come up with your own pre-cleanse routine to whatever you
feel best prepares you for your successful cleanse experience.
Ease-In Day 1 – Living Food DietSimply remove dead foods from your diet: Anything refined or excessively cooked
Starting The Master Cleanse with the Ease-in is also a
good time to build your confidence and exposure to
a Living Food Diet, Raw Food Diet, Green Diet,
Vegetarian Diet.. or whatever you call your ideal
post-cleanse, food lifestyle. I donʼt see these diets
as “Diets” in a strict sense. To me they are a
lifestyle choices regarding the foods we eat. If the
style of life you want is healthy, energetic, and long
lasting then you must eliminate toxins, de-vitalized
foods, processed foods, and otherwise dead-foods from
your diet. Detox Diet Recipes such as these (and others),
are great templates to base our daily food decisions on. We all know this
deep down. The Master Cleanse, for most, is about a transition to a
healthier lifestyle.
To do the Living Food Diet, you need only to eat live foods. Simply remove
processed foods, meat and dairy from your diet. Enjoy shopping for, and
eating interesting fruits and vegetables. Savor the rich flavor and textures.
Be sure that you donʼt go to heavy on fruits as they are high in sugar. A
60/40 balance of vegetables to fruits is a good guideline.
Ease-In Day 2 – Juicing, Blending, Soups and BrothsA peak into the life of a whole new way of eating everyday.
This step prepares your body for a liquid diet while
delivers macro nutrients more quickly to your
bloodstream. By breaking down the foods to liquids
we can more readily take in the nutrients from the
food. Fruit and Vegetable Juicing is very enjoyable.
There are endless combinationʼs of tasty juicing
recipes. Blending is equally enjoyable. Green
smoothies are like drinking a glass of healing. If
you do not have a juicer, you can make soup or broths.
Take care in purchasing your food. Choose the most wholesome forms you
can. Organic, Local etc. Juicing and Blending produces Live Food, while
cooking soups and broths creates “Dead” food, or as we more commonly
call it “Cooked Food”. Cooking foods kill enzymes, making the food less vital
than before being cooked. Try to avoid “Devitalizing” your food by lightly
cooking, and not over boiling when not necessary. Shoot for crunch veggies
with just a hint of being cooked.
Ease-In Day 3 – Orange JuicePreparing your system for a Mono-Diet regime of fluids only
Manually or electrically juice enough oranges to
make 2 liters of Orange Juice, mixed with water (to
taste).
You will use up a whole large bag of oranges
during this day. Choose your oranges wisely.
Again, look for the most Wholesome available:
Organic and/or local. But also be aware that some oranges are sweet or
more sour than others. I love the sweet tasting oranges. Some are so
sweet, and without a hint of being sour. Others love that sour bite. You might
want to open one at the store and take a bite of one. Of course, pay for it
when you check out.
Sometimes I find it hard to get the calories I need through the day and so I
add some Maple Syrup to increase my caloric intake.
The Lemonade DietHow to make and when to drink the Lemonade during The Master Cleanse
Whether you begin The Lemonade Diet immediately or Ease-In, the process
of the Lemonade Diet is the same. You will however, need to make two
decisions to suit your personal preferences and/or your daily work and
family routines. The first Master Cleanse Variation revolves around timing
your daily flush. Perhaps equally important as Ending The Master Cleanse
is the Daily Detox Bowel Movement. It is crucial to flush out the toxins your
body is eliminating, and since you are not consuming digestible food (fiber)
to create a bowel movement, you will have to make that happen. This is why
I call this process “The Daily Detox Bowel Movement”. It is this process that
cleanses your body of the waste, and toxins. There are two accepted
methods to produce Daily Detox Bowel Movements: Nightly Laxatives, and
the Salt Water Flush. Prior to your first day on The Lemonade Diet you
should have taken your Nightly Laxative. On your first full day you do not
need to do the SWF so you can start drinking your Lemonade immediately
upon waking.
The Salt Water FlushOptional, but highly recommended. Best results first thing in the morning.
The Master Cleanse is a Detox Diet. The Detox of The
Master Cleanse Diet occurs largely through Bowel
Movements. The Daily Detox Bowel Movement is the
result from the Nightly Laxative, and The Salt Water Flush.
The Salt Water Flush is optional but the Bedtime Laxative
is not. Some choose to do a Morning Laxative as well.
I choose to do the Salt Water Flush in the morning. The SWF process is a
commitment in itself. Once you take the solution, you will have to be on
guard, a bowel movement WILL be coming shortly. I donʼt mean in 5, or
even 15 minutes, but generally in 30-60 minutes after taking the salt water,
you will have your first movement. The last movements will begin to wind
down an hour or so after they begin. This is a, ahem… crappy process, and
there is really no way to sugar-coat it. The next few paragraphs will describe
in detail what you can expect.
Master Cleanse Detox with The Salt Water Flush
Using 1 liter BPA Free Water Bottle and your teaspoon measure, mix a
solution of Sea Salt and Pure Water. The original book says 2 teaspoons,
but I have used 1 tablespoon almost every time and it works the same for
me each way. The last time I did the cleanse, I tried it each way (once with 2
teaspoons and then again with 1 tablespoon), and each time I had success.
NOTE: There have been many questions about this process. Many people
complain that the SWF doesnʼt worked for them. This is probably the most
common mistake with the master cleanse. I believe it can work for
everyone, but there are no absolutes in this world. The key is to adjust the
amount of salt in order to create the right solution for your individual needs.
make sure you donʼt used iodized table salt. NON-iodized sea salt is
essential. The Salt Water Flush MUST be done on an empty stomach.
Shake the mixture well and move to the sink. I like to “pound it” – perhaps
because I like to pretend I am still in college and the sea salt is actually a
keg stand. I also move into the bathroom and stand in front of the mirror.
Somehow, by watching myself, I can manage to drink the whole liter in one
try, spilling very little. This too is a challenge in itself, especially once your
stomach has become very small from taking no solids. Chances are, you will
feel full halfway through, so just keep going. Stopping only makes you taste
the salt, and will activate your gag reflex. If you throw up most of the
mixture, you will not have success. Do whatever it takes to get it down, and
keep it down.
While it is not required to drink the solution in one go, you will find that the
taste is such that you will want to get it down quickly. It is not awful, but it is
not exactly pleasant, and therefore I choose to get it over with. I also enjoy
the little challenge. Many people have submitted their Salt Water Flush Tips
that range from sipping the mixture through a straw or adding lemon juice to
the mixture.
After you have consumed the solution, you can go about your activities until
nature calls. Laying on your right hand side to aid the solution on its journey
through your digestive track, although I donʼt find this especially helpful and
so I donʼt bother.
What to Expect from The Salt Water Flush
When you first feel the rumble in your belly and your bowels, DONʼT go
running off to the bathroom. Give it a while. Let it brew! Yeah, I know that is
weird to think about, but you should let it build up. You are going to have 3-7
movements, possibly more. Generally speaking, you will end up pushing out
what you put in. The entire liter of sea salt water will be immediately
expelled. This is because the solution is indigestible. You may have heard
that, if you are stranded at sea, drinking sea water will only dehydrate you
more. This is why. It just comes right out of you because the mixture is such
that it is not absorbed.
NOTE. If your mixture is off or it doesnʼt work (check to see if you have the
right kind of salt. Did you do it on an empty stomach?), donʼt worry. The
amount of salt you just consumed is far less than your “regular”, modern
diet. All is well. Just try again the next day with an adjustment in the amount
of salt. I suggest adding an amount to the 2 teaspoons until you are
successful.
Of course, along with the sea salt, you will be expelling waste. During the
first 2 days you will be moving out the remaining solid matter in the digestive
tract from the days prior to the Master Cleanse. If you began your diet
immediately, this will be more true than if you Eased-in, and therefore have
only juice in your system. Nevertheless, for each day you will expel solid
matter. Gross, to be certain, but also empowering. You really begin to
understand the value of this process when you recognize the elimination of
waste that has been stored in your body for months, even decades.
NOTE: Your eliminations will be MOSTLY liquid from now on. You will only
notice smaller material and clumps of thicker waste. Donʼt expect large solid
movements of any kind. You should be encouraged that even on day-10 you
still have dark liquid in your first movements of the day. All the dark matter is
retained waste that the cleanse is loosening and removing.
Once you feel you can no longer hold out, go to the bathroom. A word of
warning while you wait for this moment. DO NOT FART!!! You will most
certainly not pass only air – if you know what I mean. This is also true
throughout the rest of your day. Donʼt be fooled or you will be leaving work
to change your shorts. The first movement will be rather large and fairly
powerful. You will want to flush almost immediately. In order to understand
the whole messy details, take a look… if you dare.
Stay close to a toilet and continue to move until the frequency eases. Once
you can last 15 minutes without a serious movement, you are safe to go
about your day. For this reason I choose to undergo this process in the
morning, before I go out for the day.
The Lemonade Recipe and DirectionsExactly how to make and when to drink the Lemonade
Soon after arising you will prepare your daily intake of
Fresh Lemon Juice, Rich Maple Syrup, Cayenne
Pepper and Pure Water. If you are doing The Salt Water
Flush, you should drink your first glass of lemonade after
your first bowel movement to allow the process of elimination to begin.
Drink your Lemonade Fresh! I can not stress this enough. The key to The
Master Cleanse is the fresh lemon juice, and the living enzymes that it
contains. The other ingredients are important as well, but the fresh lemon
juice is irreplaceable (but yes, limes can be substituted).
The Lemonade Diet Concentrate
I used to drink my lemonade Pre-mixed. I now understand a critical flaw to
this plan. The longer your Lemonade sits, the more enzymes die. If you
need to Pre-mix your Lemonade, then you should only mix a concentrate of
just the Fresh Lemon Juice, and the Rich Maple Syrup. The maple syrup
acts as a preservative. This Lemonade Diet Concentrate will keep the
enzymes alive long enough to be consumed during the day. Store The
Lemonade Diet Concentrate in a cool, dark, glass container. Do not add the
cayenne or water to the concentrate. The cayenne will “Steep” like tea, and
make the concentrate very hot. The water will dilute the maple syrup and
the enzymes in the Fresh Lemon Juice will die. Learn the details about
Master Cleanse Enzymes and The Lemonade Diet Concentrate because it
is crucial to your success, and is a leading cause of Master Cleanse
Problems.
You will drink between 6 and 12 glasses of Lemonade each day (some
people drink as much as 26 glasses per day). This will depend on how big
or small you currently are (and you caloric needs), your tolerance to
physical and psychological urges to eat, and your desire to to lose weight.
Master Cleanse Weight Loss results vary according to your pre-cleanse
weight, and can be managed, to a degree, by how much lemonade you
drink. Obviously you can drink more, for less weight loss, and drink less to
lose more weight. It is not a wise choice to drink less than 6 glasses in an
effort to lose “extra” weight. Weight loss (if any), should occur naturally. It is
wise to drink whenever youʼre hungry, or when you feel a lack of energy
(commonly felt as a weakness or mild shakiness), which is quickly corrected
by drinking a glass of Fresh Lemonade. 12 glasses per day should be your
starting point from which you will make adjustments.
Lemonade Diet Ingredients
Mix each of the following lemonade diet ingredients into a large glass:
1. 2 Tablespoons Fresh Lemon Juice
2. 2 Tablespoons Rich Maple Syrup
3. 1/10 Teaspoon Cayenne Pepper Powder – or to taste (as much as you can stand)
4. 8 ounces (250 milliliters of Pure Water
Roll each lemon firmly between your palm and the counter. Put sufficient
downward pressure as you rock the lemon back and forth under your hand.
You are softening the lemon to make the extraction of juice more efficient.
NOTE: store your lemons on the counter to ripen, NOT in the fridge.
Enzymes are dormant in the fridge. You want those enzymes. If you buy 50
lemons in advance, as most people do, store 40 in the fridge at a time and
take the 10 most ripe lemons out for your first day or two.
Next, cut the lemon and juice each half on the juicer (if using an electric
juicer you may want to juice the whole allotment at once, since you will not
be sure how many lemons will yield the proper amount of juice. You may
initially find you will waste a lemon or two).
Add the rest of the lemonade ingredients into the glass, mix immediately,
and drink. I like to drink the glass quickly because it seems to hit my hunger
spot quickly. I usually only drink when I need to, and when enough time has
passed to allow for a nice spread over the day as I try to manage my daily
quota.
(Note: You might get a kick out of licking the tablespoon measure after
adding your maple syrup. You may even come to look forward to this part of
the process –just donʼt “eat” the syrup in quantity).
Drink Pure Water Throughout the Day
I carry a 1-liter BPA-free Water Bottle filled with Pure Water with me at all
times. This water will cleanse your palate of the lemonade, as well as
maintain the illusion that your stomach is full. You can drink as much water
as you do Lemonade. All the water you consume from (including the water
in the lemonade), is a key factor in why this cleanse is so successful. Most
of us are chronically dehydrated. And most of us eat when we are thirsty.
We donʼt understand the difference between the cravings for water and
food. I drink as much as I can, but like anything, one shouldnʼt overdo it.
Every time I feel a hunger craving, I take a nice big chug of water. I believe I
am turning off the switch in my physiology that is telling me that I am
hungry. If I feel very hungry, or weak, I drink a glass of Lemonade.
Lemonade Diet Conclusion – Repeating the Process
That concludes the process of The Lemonade Diet. Just repeat for every
day of your intended duration. Most Master Cleanse Practitioners wonʼt
recommend less than 10 days. 10 days is a great achievement and will
produce far better results as your body can really begin to focus on the
deep and dark within. 14 days is very challenging and when added to the
Ease-in and Ease-out is almost 3 weeks in total. I have heard of, and
known, people who go for 30 and more. Tom Woloshyn claims the longest
he has heard of is 372 days straight with the second longest being 256.
Some people do “Cleanse Stacks” where they will do 10 days followed by
some regular eating and quickly going back on for another 10 days as many
as 5 times. My suggestion is that 2 weeks is more than enough. There are
reasons for Long Term Master Cleansing such as Disease Cleansing, but
that topic is far outside of the scope of this article.
Consequences of Variations
There are really only 3 parts of the process that are open to variation and
any consequences.
1. The Lemonade Ingredients⁃ Lemons: If your lemons aren't fresh, you won't get the active
enzymes critical to breaking down molecules and creating molecules in your body. You need these enzymes. This is critical
⁃ Maple Syrup: The sugar in the Maple syrup is your primary calorie source, but High Grade syrup is full of nutrients and minerals that your body will need during the cleanse. Using table syrup will deprive your body.
⁃ Cayenne Pepper: Cayenne is a super food containing powerful ingredients. It's a blood thinner, and a catalyst for metabolism and is a loosing agent.
⁃ Water: Tap water is full of toxins. Distilled water is dead and lacks minerals and trace elements.
2. The Lemonade Process: Premixing your drink will kill the enzymes in the Lemon. Drinking your lemonade in a timely fashion is key. Drink early, drink often (when ever you feel hungry or weak), and make it last throughout the day.
3. Laxatives and The Salt Water Flush: The laxative must be taken each night to produce a more significant cleanse through eliminations. The SWF can be done alone, but is know to have less significant movements of hardened matter.
Common, Acceptable Substitutes and Additions
There are some variations that were described by Stanley Burroughs. You should assume any other variation is not acceptable. (more details in the Ebook and Website).
1. Lemons: Can use limes2. Maple Syrup: Can use Sugar Cane or Sorghum3. Laxatives and Teas: Can use Salt Water Flush (See website for details).
Nightly Herbal LaxativesTake right before sleeping so that you are ready to “move” in the morning
There are several herbal laxatives that work well. Most people
find that by using Laxative Tablets they are able to better
manage the dosage. Often the suggested dosage is not
enough to produce the movement in the morning. Tom
Woloshyn, author of The Complete Master Cleanse swears that 4 tablets is
a good starting point. If you cramp or wake up early with a movement, scale
back to 3 tablets. If your movement doesnʼt happen in the morning, scale up
to 5 tablets.
Daily Detox Diet RoutineNotice the trends, add some routine to your daily practice
The Lemonade Diet is a routine in itself, but many people add many other
optional practices to their daily routine. The Lemonade Diet process has a
funny way of making the whole experience feel repetitive. I look for my time
during the day to take each step. Since there are 5 - 8 (or more) steps one
can take during the process, you can sort of count-down the day, by
reaching these short little milestones.
Daily Routine Activities
1. Detox Bowel Movements: You need to produce a daily bowel movement either from the Nightly Laxative, or from The Salt Water Flush (or both). This is the most important, and often misunderstood part of the process. By most accounts, the laxative is not optional. The Salt Water flush is. I have done cleanses with only the SWF.
2. Herbal Teas: Stanley Burroughs says you can have any herbal tea. So I try them all. Make sure they donʼt have caffeine in them.
3. Exercise: Yes you can exercise while on The Master Cleanse. Itʼs up to you to gauge your own levels of stress tolerance. Personally, I have lifted weights, done hot yoga, played hockey, and ran miles (often followed by a steam --but note, the steam at the gym is a dirty place, and your immune system is low).
4. Body Scrubs: This includes the most obvious body scrub, our showers, baths and brushing our teeth. But you can go further, and usually should. Brush or scrape your tongue. Get a pedicure. Soak your feet. Use a loofa, or other exfoliators.
5. Massage or Reflexology: Having your body worked will help stimulate lymph, and therefore aid in your detoxing efforts.
6. Steams and Saunas: Be careful and mindful. Public steams can be dirty, and The Master Cleanse depresses your immune system. Be aware of your limits and take it easy, alternating with cool showers.
7. Journaling: A very common tool of both the newbie and master cleanser. Journal your weight, experiences, moods and more day-by-day.
Lemonade Diet Day-By-DayWhat to expect each day during The Lemonade Diet
The Lemonade Diet is 10 days long and deserves itʼs own little roadmap.
Each day is different for each cleanser and for each different time cleansing.
Itʼs always a little different.
There are however some very common similar characteristics of each of the
days. In particular, days 2,3 and 7, are by far the hardest, according to
Peter Glickman, author of Lose Weight. Many agree.
The following roadmap of each day of The Lemonade Diet are titled
according to the most common experiences of the thousands of cleansers
and comments on TheMasterCleanse.org. If you have a particular
experience with a particular day, why not click-through from this Ebook to
the website and leave your experience on the page for each of the days.
Your experience will greatly help others newbie cleansers like you.
Living Day-to-Day is the way to make it through The Master Cleanse. When
I think about the 8 days ahead of me I can get discouraged. The mountain
to climb seems too high; the wall in front of me too high to climb. When I
come back into the moment, I am able to let that worry pass into the activity
of the day and then this 1 day isnʼt so bad. I begin to realize how good I feel
rather than how much I want a cookie, or a beer, or anything but a glass of
spicy lemonade.
“Its really easy to jump on this bandwagon - Beware the hype and false expectations”
Day 1 of The Lemonade Diet for me is
called “The Bandwagon”. I call it The
Bandwagon because many “outsiders”
or non-cleansers, would call The
Master Cleanse a “Fad Diet” (I have
my own ideas about this term). And
with any “Fad Diet”, there is a Bandwagon that plows through town picking
up anyone who is interested in the passing popularity of the trend, whatever
it may be.
This isnʼt to say that a Bandwagon is necessarily a bad thing. You might
have a friend or two who is a longtime fan of a music act or sports team.
They loved their muse through good times and bad. They were there from
the start. Then fame or success comes, along with legions of new fans.
Some would say that these new fans are less-than fans (at least relative to
the “super-fan” who has been there all along).
I reject that theory. If you love it, youʼre in. Donʼt worry about the fact that
outsides might call it a fad. Thatʼs your choice to make. But beware, that like
all Bandwagons, getting on is quick and easy, and so is getting off. So if you
started unprepared and for the wrong reasons, Day 1 is a quick stop on The
Master Cleanse train where many people quit as fast as they started.
There is a saying: “Sick in, Sick out”. Be prepared to have cold and flu like symptoms as you detox.
There is a saying in the Master Cleanser
Community about the side effects we call
Healing Events: “Sick in, Sick out”. This means
when you picked up something like a flu virus, or
bacteria, or something your body wanted to
reject, you experience a Disease Event. Your
body was not “At Ease”, or in a state of “Dis-
Ease” because of it. You bodyʼs immune system then deploys any and all
available defines mechanisms to expel the intruder. These mechanisms
include:
1. Stuffed Nose, Runny Nose or Congestion
2. Cough, and Sneezes
3. Soar throats and swollen glands.
4. Fatigue, Muscle aches and other Cold and Flu Symptoms
5. Skin Irritations such as Rashes and Breakouts
6. Headaches
7. Fevers
8. Cold sores or other mouth sores
As your body eliminates the intruders that have been sequestered in your
body for months or years, your body will display the same reactions as it did
when you first ingested them.
Everyday of The Lemonade Diet can be a challenge, especially for Newbie
Cleansers. But day 2 seems to be the day most people quit. Many People
can make it through Day 1 on adrenalin alone. 1 day can seem to fly by (or
drag on). If your willpower was sufficient to get through 1 day you definitely
can make it through days 2 or 3 all of the days. They are just single solitary
days to get through.
The first 2 days are mostly about the physical cravings for food which is
why, for me, Days 1, 2 and 3 are the very hardest.
Our bodies are trained for digestible food of a certain kind and quantity.
During these 3 days our bodies are in withdrawal while we re-train our
bodies to accept less calories at different times and with different textures. It
really is amazing what our bodies can do; the programs they run enabling
us to heal, grow, and live. Our bodies are so capable and adaptable.
“Lingering feelings from the Crisis of Day 3 fades quickly into a manageable event”
Tom Woloshyn, author of The Complete
Master Cleanse refers to Healing Events as
Healing Crisis, but I prefer the term Healing
Events since it casts the event in a more
positive light.
Healing Events truly are positive as they
represent the exit of something that caused a Disease Event when they
were ingested in the first place.
The Crisis of Day 3 can pass into a realization that these events too will
pass. They do not signify that you are dying, or you canʼt do it, or that the
cleanse is causing them. They are simply the result of process, and exactly
what you are trying to achieve.
Some events last longer than others, and some may cause you to quit. If
you are feeling very bad, to stop The Master Cleanse, just slowly begin your
Ease-Out. They usually pass as quickly as they came. I have seen and read
accounts of rashes and acne breaking out one day, only to be gone the
next. Remarkable.
Whatʼs more, recognize the side effects from prescription drugs. Many of
these include such wonderful things as blindness, death or 4 hour erections.
(yikes). Effects are not necessarily a reason not to do something. Just being
prepared for them so they can be managed is enough.
When struggling through events, get lots of rest, drink lots of lemonade,
drink lots of water, stay warm and keep a positive outlook. This too will
pass. All is well, are two mantras I like to say to myself.
The struggles of the first 3 days always breaks into a movement of serenity when you begin to realize that “I can do this, I feel great”.
Momentum is a funny thing.
As a former professional hockey player, I was witness to some pretty
amazing examples of momentum. I am not talking about the momentum
from high school physics that deals with objects in motion. (although of
course the analogy has itsʼ roots here). I am talking about the extra man,
the silent motivator, the wind at your back when you perceive fortune and
opportunity is shining upon you.
I am talking about when my junior hockey team was down 7-1 in the third
period, and an event occurred; one that changed the direction of energy of
the game, and in our minds. In this game it was a goal and a fight by the
same player on the same play. Our bench exploded with energy because we
were all so excited and focused about the current reality.
Now there have been other games when we were down by a lot and nothing
changed the momentum for us. There was nothing that tilted the rink in our
favor that caused us to believe the rest of the game would be different.
After that goal/fight, we believed, and believed with a passion (an almost
fervor), that would could, no would come back –AND, we did just that.
For me, Day 4 is that shift from, “Oh, I donʼt think I can do this”, to “This is
no problem”, or at least “I think I have a shot”
Many people have no problems from Day 1. Not me. I always have some
concern, discomfort, or sense of loss for my food (even if just a little). I too
have to overcome the physical hump of the first 3 days. But Day 4 is when I
feel the tide turning. And even though I havenʼt turned the corner just yet; I
may still be down 7-2, but I know if, no, when I score 1 more goal, or make
it one more day I will be over that hump. There is now light at the end of the
tunnel.
Tomorrow is the halfway point, and when I get there itʼs all down hill from
there.
“Halfway there, and over the hump to a new you, physically and mentally”
I think there are 3 reasons why
humpday is so hard.
1. Stockpile of Toxins: Maybe
there is so much to pass out of me
for the first 3 or 4 days that the mornings, and movements are so shocking
that it causes a lot of people to quit. I was second guessing myself this
morning briefly while I held back vomit and assumed the fetal position in my
bed. The movements get easier and easier as they get cleaner and cleaner
throughout the day.
2. Physical Hunger: Our bodies are still really aware of the recent past
when we used to eat. We have an expectation of a meal coming around the
same time each day. 4 days later we have started to create a new
expectation of food –The Lemonade.
3. Process Perfection: I admit: my nausea this morning is mostly my fault.
My water sucks and so the taste was awful. I am not in my settled home and
do not have access to the water source I would like. Today I solved this
problem by finding some pure, healthy, tasty water to help me. I also donʼt
have my measures and drink bottles to help me drink the SWF the way I like
it –chugging it. This speaks volumes about how important preparation is and
how it can help with Successfully Starting The Master Cleanse. After a few
days, regardless of or preparation, we will naturally make adjustments so
that the process is easier.
“Starting to feel better, but still a long way down the home stretch”
It seems inevitable that just as we are making strides, turning corners, and
building momentum that an equal and opposite re-action sends us back to
where we started, or at the very least slows our momentum.
Day 6 signifies these pitfalls that all cleansers need to take heed of and be
mindful of them so their risk can be mitigated, or altogether avoided.
We get cocky when we achieve something. Getting over the Hump at Day 5
was a great accomplishment, but the risk of complacency can quickly arise.
Watch out for the following Pitfalls:
1. Not drinking enough lemonade
2. Not starting early enough in the day
3. Skipping daily detox bowel movements
4. Running Out of Water, Maple Syrup or Lemons
5. Going to social events and sneaking snacks
If you can continue to avoid these pitfalls the next 4 days are looking pretty
easy, except watch out for “The Wall” coming at day 7.
“7 Days is good enough”, or “I can’t go any further” are common cries when one hits The Wall at Day 7
With only 3 days to go there are only 2 days left
for people quit the Lemonade Diet prematurely,
deciding “this is good enough”, often because
their will is broken, and 7 full days is a good
compromise; it is a nice first try, something to be
proud of.
Donʼ get me wrong, 7 days is a great accomplishment, especially for the
first time cleanser. I do not believe in the traditional meaning of the words
“Fail” or “Failure”. These words to me mean a station on the journey to
success. At this point you have only achieved, leaving nothing to be
ashamed of.
Compromise is Two-Faced
I called compromise “two-faced”. This is because it seems like a good thing
and a bad thing all at the same time. Sure, it is good to compromise at
times. Marriages and collaborations require compromise to be successful. It
feels great in those situations where two minds differ in their wants and
happy resolution that accommodates both is found. But when you are
standing on principal, fighting for a goal, fixated on a vision quest,
compromise is the same thing as defeat.
7 days is good, but 10 days was your goal. Go get your goal. You can do it.
Imagine how good you feel now with your sense of accomplishment of
reaching 7 days, and then triple it because you went 10. 3 days equals triple
the value because you nearly compromised, but didnʼt, AND you reached
your goal like you said you would.
10 Days is really, really, really, important
I will never take a week long vacation again. By the time I get unpack, get
settled, recover from the travel day, get lost a few times the first few day
while finding what I like to do, and where to spend my time, get packed,
spend another day traveling –it feels like I only had 2 days of vacation.
This is what The Master Cleanse is like for 7 day cleansers. 10 days is only
3 days better, but it makes the value days more valuable. You have more
focused cleansing days following the first 4 crazy days. The deep, latter-
dayʼs are when you feel the rewards. 10 days probably isnʼt long enough
either. 14 would make for a great, deep cleansing.
Tomorrow you can tell yourself that tomorrow is the last day (of the
Lemonade Diet). Once you start the Ease-Out, you feel you are done, even
though it is many hours before you get to taste your favorite comfort food
again.
“Starting to feel better, but still 2 full days down the home stretch”
Weʼve gained momentum, gotten over the Hump and today weʼve turned the
corner. Maybe that is too many metaphors to mix, but to me they are all just
a little different, especially in the context of an event of a specific duration,
one which is a challenge to complete.
When training for hockey, I did a lot of running, cycling, stair-climbing and
other cardiovascular training, weights and plyometrics. No matter what the
activity, it was always grueling. Most of the time is was a psychological
marathon before (and during) the exercise itself.
When your staring down a 5 mile course which you must run in 40 minutes,
you know you will be challenged. You know it will be an exhausting,
punishing event.
The way I have always coped with these types of challenges was to chunk
them. Little did I know I was doing this all along, but today, chunking has
become leading tool in productivity.
Chunking has a few meanings but this term is most commonly used to
describe a productivity method in contrast to multi-tasking. When a large
project presents itself, you block off smaller, but still large enough chunks of
related activity so that it pushes you to complete them, but they are still
easily achieved.
I utilized chunking in my 5 mile run. I would break down the run in my mind
into thirds (you can use any unit size that makes sense). That way, I could
focus on accomplishing a more manageable task. “Just get past the first
third, and make sure you have enough pace to make my time in the next
2/3, but not too much so that I will run out of gas during the next 2/3″. Then,
when I arrive at the next third, I could say to myself, “OK, last third before
the last third” (which sounds absurd, but it works). Then, of course, during
the last third I can be focused for the sprint to the finish line knowing its now
the last chunk.
I apply chunking to The Master Cleanse first by Groups (Ease-In, The
Lemonade Diet, and Ease-Out), and second by days. This is actually a little
bit of a stretch for chunking because there are too many units, and too short
of chunks relative to the overall timeframe. Despite having 10 units of days
during The Lemonade Diet, the process still benefits by chunking. The result
of this is actually the Day-to-Day Naming concept, of which this chapter now
explores Day 8, The Corner.
If Hump Day on Day 4 revealed some light peeking through the end of the
tunnel, today we can see the exit of the tunnel –a clear round light
beckoning us to get to and pass through. Our path to success is well lit. We
feel the momentum of our success. We have the confidence of having the
worst of the physical effects of The Master Cleanse behind us. The majority
of our effort is complete and we can begin to ease into a nice pace towards
the finish line.
“Often talked about clarity of the cleansers high begins to become apparent for many”
I have used running as an analogy before, and I will carry that
forward to today to discuss the “High” that is reported by
many Master Cleansers.
The Cleansers High is very much an
extension of The Stride one hits when
the process has cleared itself and the flow is engaged. The High comes
from a prolonged stride –if you will. Itʼs a state of euphoric acceptance, and
free-flowing energy. It is a finally tuned machine firing on all cylinders.
When one achieves this zen-like state, it is very encouraging. It is a state of
being that feels so at-ease, even when in the midst of chaos, or trial. The
challenges donʼt fade away. The difficulty of the cleanse is still there. There
are still the odd hunger pang, or longing to eat/taste food. For the runner,
he/she is still running. It is still demanding, but the mind-set has shifted,
which creates a ʻbody-setʼ if you will. This will make sense to you if you
understand the Mind/Body relationship.
Some of the effects of the Cleansers High are reported as:
1. A general sense of well-being
2. Increased energy
3. Clarity of mind, decision making
4. Glowing skin, and aura
5. Positive outlook on the cleanse and life
6. Increased patience
More frequent access to “The Witness” (your alter ego who can witness your
automatic pattern behaviors, allowing you to preempt those which you might
like to change).
It should be noted that not everyone experiences this for one reason or
another. If you donʼt experience the Cleansers High, donʼt fret. I see a lot of
comments stating frustration about many rigid goals like not losing weight
everyday, or why isnʼt my skin glowing, or where is the energy burst I hear
about. Every cleanse for Every body is different.
On Day 8, we discussed the psychology of progress and accomplishment.
For me, turning that corner towards the home stretch has 3 major pieces of
awesome.
First, I am almost home, and that feels great. But second, this is the time
when I begin to hit my stride. I gain so much confidence from my
accomplishment. My process is smooth and completely out of my way. I feel
like I can go forever. Finally, my mind and body has reached a state of
efficiency as well. It now knows what to expect and has readjusted to a new
optimal state.
Confidence is an incredible motivator and fuel for success. There were a
few reasons why my hockey career fizzled, but the nail in the coffin was
confidence.
These days I design software and information. All this work is very cerebral.
I juggle a lot of concepts in my mind and manipulate non-tangible objects in
a computer screen all day. That takes a lot of metal power –so much so that
if I didnʼt have good systems in place I wouldnʼt be effective. Truthfully
speaking, it has taken me a better part of a decade to discover and employ
tactics that create a system of workflow that gets out of my way and
increases my potential and productivity.
Having the right tools and the right script makes any process easier. This
much is obvious to everyone, but it amazes me how many people start off
without proper tools and instruction, and then because of that are much
more likely to be frustrated with their progress leading them to quit.
When you hit this flow zone, your mind and reaches a state of optimal
performance. It is firing on all cylinders, and hitting its stride. This state of
mind only comes when confidence is gained through the repetition of an
efficient process. While this sounds awfully mechanical, I can assure you it
isnʼt.
First, change your perspective about the repetition of the process. Learn to
love the improvement you notice with each repetition –be present in the
process– rather than longing for that future when you will be “good” one
day.
Second, when you have a framework established creativity flourishes. You
have a great deal of freedom to “riff” off of when you have an established
set of fundamentals. It is the framework that gives you freedom to “play”; to
experiment for the joy of seeing what you can accomplish with the skills you
have, and are developing. And finally, it is when we are children at play, that
we enter an optimal state of mind and hit our stride.
The metaphor of “hitting your stride” comes from running. There is a point
when runners find a rhythm, and grove that their stride seems effortless.
This just doesnʼt happen to first time runners. It happens to runners with just
a little experience, a present sense of concentrated playfulness.
At this stage of The Master Cleanse, many have hit their stride.
“Congrats you did it! Now the joy of new flavors OR maybe you should you extend your cleanse?”
What a journey. If you planned to go 10 days, congrats, you made it. Some
people plan to go longer and for you, you can still feel proud. Use the
momentum that you have gained to push through to your goal.
Many people often take their “Stride” and chose to ride out the “High” for a
few more days. After all it has gotten pretty easy not. The worst of the detox
is behind them. Why not push through for a few more days. How do you
know if it is the right time for you to quit is a question I hear a lot. Lets
consider a few details:
Signs that you should keep on Cleansing
Just because these signs are present doesnʼt mean you must keep
cleansing. You reached your goal. If you have had your fill of Master
Cleanse (so to speak), take your accomplishment and leave the cleansing
for later. That was a great start. Doing it again in 3, 6, or 9 months you will
pick up where you left off (assuming you donʼt get back on a Retox Diet
straight away and consistently for months).
Some signs like the white tongue donʼt resolve until 30 days or more of
either continuous cleansing, or a cleansing cycle.
The key to know if you should quit or not is to learn how to listen to your
body. Trust your intuition. If you feel itʼs time to quit; quit. If you feel like
continuing then do. If you donʼt, then move directly to the Ease-Out with a
sense of accomplishment and excitement for the tastes and flavors to come.
Orange Juice is next!
1. You planned to do more than 10 days. If youʼre feeling good, and your plan was for 14 day. Keep going you can do it.
2. You feel amazing, so why not a little longer.
3. You have plenty of ingredients left AND you feel amazing. Donʼt keep going if youʼre ready to quit but have extra maple syrup. Make a maple syrup salmon or pancakes.
4. You feel you have more weight to lose. Again donʼt let this drive if you feel you must quit. Learn to listen to your body.
5. You feel your detox is just getting started. Your tongue is still very white and your movements very dark and chunky. Again. Listen to your body.
Signs that it is time to quit the Master Cleanse
Remember: quitting isnʼt a 4 letter word. It is a word that needs re-branding.
You have reached your goal. You are not quitting. You are stopping, and
there is a difference. Even if you didnʼt make your 10 days, you have still
much to be proud of. Just starting is the first step. In time youʼll take more.
My first yoga class my instructor said the first goal is just to stay in the
room. Be proud of yourself and support yourself in your decision, whatever
it is.
1. You have a strong desire to eat.
2. You have physical hunger or weakness –feelings of not enough energy.
3. Youʼre tongue is white and/or your movements are clear.
4. You feel stress about a scheduling conflict coming that you didnʼt plan for.
5. Youʼre satisfied with your accomplishment and wish to leave it at that.
Stopping The Master CleanseWhen you’re ready to stop, you know it, but make sure you know how to stop well
The Ease-out process of The Master Cleanse is the exact same as the
Ease-In, but in reverse. This is also another reason I choose to do the
Ease-In – it prepares me for the Ease-Out. You will be tempted to fast-track
this process, but DONʼT. Consider this step as ESSENTIAL. You can
become nauseated if you start to eat too soon. Please donʼt underestimate
the importance of this process. On the other hand, donʼt be scared of it
either. You do risk some serious constipation if you eat something too soon,
but you will likely be okay in the long run.
The most important factor to keep in mind during this stage of The Master
Cleanse is to drink a lot of water. Especially when you are Fruit Juicing and
Vegetable Juicing. If you do not make broth, and opt for juices instead, it is
important you understand that the juice will have a great deal of fiber, and
you need to make sure you have enough water in your system to keep you
from becoming constipated.
Ease-Out Day 1 – Orange JuicePrepare your stomach slowly for more complex fiber and more complex foods
The process on this day is exactly as during the
Ease-In:
Manually or electrically juice enough oranges to
make 2 liters of Orange Juice, mixed with water (to
taste). Sometimes I find it hard to get the calories I need through the day
and so I add some Maple Syrup to increase my caloric intake.
Make sure you have your oranges purchased the night before or you will
find yourself awfully hungry and the grocery store.
You may consider adding a glass of Lemonade (Master Cleanse Recipe), to
your morning on each day during The Ease-Out. I believe is an extra step in
the blending of the Lemonade Diet back to a regular diet. In fact many
people suggest drinking The Lemonade (Master Cleanse Recipe), every day
to start the morning.
Ease-Out Day 2 – Juicing, Blending, BrothsPrepare your stomach slowly for more complex fiber and more complex foods
The process on this day is exactly as during the
Ease-In:
This step preps your body for a liquid diet and
delivers macro nutrients more quickly to your
bloodstream. By breaking down the foods to liquids
we can more readily take in the nutrients from the
food. Fruit and Vegetable Juicing is very enjoyable.
There are endless combinationʼs of tasty juicing recipes. Blending is equally
enjoyable. Green smoothies are like drinking a glass of healing. If you do
not have a juicer, you can make soup broths.
During the Ease-Out, it is especially important not to over look the fact that
when you are juicing, you get a lot of fiber. Make sure you drink lots of
water.
When making your broth, make them very lightly cooked. You want to get
out the nutrients into the broth without killing them. In other words: You donʼt
have to boil on high setting.
Ease-Out Day 3 – Living Food DietPrepare your stomach slowly for more complex fiber and more complex foods
The process on this day is exactly as during the Ease-
In:
To do the Living Food Diet, you need only to eat
live foods. Simply remove processed foods, meat
and dairy from your diet. Enjoy shopping for, and
eating interesting fruits and vegetables. Savor the
rich flavor and textures. Be sure that you donʼt go to
heavy on fruits as they are high in sugar. A 60/40
balance of vegetables to fruits is a good guideline. Again,
be sure to drink a lot of water to balance the fiber you are
now taking in.
On this day you might consider if you want to continue on with a living food
diet indefinitely. Perhaps you decide you want to juice one day a week, and
do live foods only 1 day a week, in order to increase not only your intake of
fruits and vegetables, but also your taste pallet. Get to know the living foods
from your grocer. You will find some exotic craving replacements. I now find
myself craving avocado smoothies.
After The Master CleanseWhat to expect, how to plan for, and what to strive for after the cleanse is over
When you are done The Master Cleanse, the next and maybe most
important step is to begin to Eat Wisely. This sounds so simple, yet so many
people go right back to eating emotionally to sooth their daily worries.
Choose to Eat Wisely and you will not put the weight back on. Go back to
Eating Poorly and you will gain back all the weight you just lost – and
maybe more!
Day 1 - Bingeing MentalityThere are lots of tasty foods out there, but go slow. They’re not going anywhere
Day 1 is a crucial day after The Master Cleanse. These reasons might be
obvious to most, however, even to those for whom it does seem like a “no-
brainer” the urge to binge after purging can be great.
The binge and purge mentality is a common one. We do it naturally in our
lives. We might store (even horde), our memorabilia, furniture, clothes and
other keepsakes, until one day we purge it all with garage sales, and
donations to good will.
The example of money also comes to mind. If we are used to a period of
limited means, then we are presented with a windfall, many people will
binge on spending until it is all gone. I read online that 70% of lottery
winners go broke, and 1 person who one $114 million dollars was broke in
less than 4 years.
Continue to practice the restraint over your mindʼs desire for food by not
swinging wildly towards an insatiable desire for the food you were not able
to eat while on the cleanse. Itʼs natural to indulge in your favorites, but have
1/3 or even 1/4 portions. Your stomach will be very small anyway. Take
advantage of that fact, and realize you feel full (and fulfilled) after eating
much less than you did before.
If you find yourself uncontrollably eating at anytime, you should be aware
that you have a relationship with food that is still dominated by your mind.
Go slow with your assimilation back to a more normal diet. You will find you
will continue to be rewarded with the pleasure of overcoming cravings, and
being in control of your choices of what to eat.
Week 1 - Avoiding The Retox DietBalance in food choices is key. Shoot for 80/20 for a Good to Not-so-Good ration
The Retox Diet is a concept which builds upon the ideas of the binge/purge
mentality. The cleansing cycle often becomes one of many months of
bingeing followed by 2 weeks of cleansing. These pro-longed binges create
a lifestyle-flow that is more like a conscious choice to “retoxify” by eating all
the foods that one was deprived of during the cleanse, AND, that one fears
a loss of in the future --projecting towards their next now-impending
cleanse.
Awareness is the key to avoiding the Retox Diet. If one is aware of the
pattern, it can be avoided. This is as simple as recognizing when poor
eating choices are beginning to pile up. Set a standard for deviation from
healthy eating choices, one which you can tolerate. 80/20 (good choices to
bad choices --you know which ones are and which ones arenʼt right? If not,
you should). This simple comparison is a terrific standpoint for the common
omnivore who has no intentions of going vegan, raw food, or even part time
vegetarian.
Ask yourself: How often did I eat well this week? If the answer is less than
80%, do better next month, and start right now by making your next meal a
live one.
If you must got 50/50, or even 20/80. Just donʼt go 100/0, or the Retox/
Detox cycle will be exaggerated and you may find yourself with an eating
disorder.
Month 1 - Developing Long Term Eating HabitsIn just 30 Days you can replace old destructive habits with new productive ones
My Dad always said life was about habits, both good and bad. We all
behave largely according to our habits, or our patterns of learned behavior. I
think most of us know that habits can be learned and unlearned, but a
distinct effort is always required to do so.
A very popular Self-Improvement author and speaker, Eben Pagan, teaches
that it takes 30 days to develop a habit. He talks about the “Escape Velocity”
needed to break the tension between the internal desire for an old habit with
the new internal desire for the new habit.
The 30 Days following The Master Cleanse are a perfect opportunity to build
these new patterns. You are already cleansed and therefore have a reason
to maintain your cleansed state. You are already familiar with juicing,
blending, eating raw, living foods, and drinking lots of water. If you were to
continue on a live/raw food diet for 30 days following The 14 Days of The
Master Cleanse, I am very certain you will create in yourself some new
habits of eating, which also happily often replace our old habits of eating.
You will find yourself craving live foods, healthy foods, living foods that
create energy in your daily activity, not the lethargy created from salt/sugar
latent processed food diets that many of us are guilty of.
Year 1 - Cleanse CyclesMaintenance schedules every month, quarter or year.
As your first year following The Master Cleanse draws to an end, you will
likely begin to think about when your next cleanse should be. You may have
already planned for, or even completed your next cleanse. After your second
cleanse you are already on a very short, single cycle. But into your 3rd or
4th you will begin to recognize when you are instinctively ready for your next
cleanse.
I like to break the Calendar up into quarters so I can take advantage of the
opportunities in the schedule after the major holidays. For me, every 6
months is too much. The Cleanse is a challenge I donʼt necessarily look
forward to. Sure there are aspects of it I enjoy, but it is a commitment, and I
just like eating that much. 9 months to a year is a fine cycle for me, and I
suspect is for most people as well.
Over my last 5 cleanses I have been made aware by my slowly increasing
waistline that a cleanse is due. I do put the weight on that I loose during the
cleanse, but it takes me 9 months to a year to do so. If you are putting it all
back on within a few weeks or months even you are in a Yo-Yo, not a
cleanse cycle, and you should seek help with your relationship with food.
The fact is, with me anyway, I just donʼt get the exercise I should. I donʼt
over eat that badly, but I do diet at a caloric surplus, which cause gradual
weight gain.
Of course the weight isnʼt the primary trigger, it just so happens that at
around 9 months I know I am ready by looking at how many inches I can
pinch, and realizing that in the time span I was due for a cleanse regardless.
Some people go on an Advanced Cleansing Regimen where they may do
The Master Cleanse for 14 Days, then a Raw Food Diet for 30 Days, then
The Master Cleanse for 14 Days, then a Juice Diet or other type of cleanse.
Most of the time this is done be people cleansing for disease management,
or other long term intentions. Please consult a practitioner for more
information on Advanced Cleansing Regimens.
Go-Forward Lifestyle ChoicesNo need for wholesale changes, but choose to make more and more good choices
Of course not everyone is going to follow The Master Cleanse with a strict,
live food --always eating healthy routine. There is just too much great
tasting and rich food out there. In fact most people will go directly back to
their old diets. And thatʼs OK, just doing the cleanse is a great step. But if
you can, take with you some “Go-Forward” lifestyle choices that The Master
Cleanse may have revealed, or strengthened in you.
For example, recognize the social and psychological cues to eat. This will
continue to serve you in your ability to chose to perhaps pass on every
snack available at the office.
Also, recall how good your pure live food of juices and broths can taste, and
how light and strong and healthy you felt. This state is the result of a well
fed machine. Avoiding starches, refined foods, artificial foods, empty
calories and salts and sugars will naturally supplant these foods with others,
which will likely be more whole, raw, natural, and un-refined goodness.
Utilize your ability to control your habits, to change your patterns in other
areas of your life. The Master Cleanse has a unique side-effect in that it
raises ones awareness. And once raised it can not retreat. You have now
witnessed that you can do what you didnʼt think you could do, and the just
because others have an opinion, (even informed ones), doesnʼt mean that
what they are saying is true for you, or even true for anyone, but especially
NEVER true for EVERYONE.
