Caro Massimo,

Ora che la tua mostra a Milano è fissata posso guardare indietro con più chiarezza; emi sembra così di trovare un filo unico che dalle prime immagini delle tue opere, chemi inviasti ormai qualche anno fa, arriva a quelle dei dipinti che esporrai.Quale sorpresa fu quando mi scrivesti della tua decisione di dedicarti ‘anema e'ccore’alla pittura. Ti conoscevo fotografo sensibile, ti ritrovavo pittore vero nel cuore e nellemani e nella mente: ecco, la stessa attenzione, la stessa cura, ma accresciuti sulla tela.Era il vero Massimo Angèi che usciva allo scoperto: dichiaratosi sconfitto dal richiamodelle muse, accettava il fardello di dare forma e colore a quanto gli ribolliva dentro.Mi colpiva il tuo uso moderato del colore, come a tenerti distante dalle esplosioni;ti/mi vedevo nuotare in acque profonde assistendo a spettacoli tra la natura e ilsurreale. Ecco perché ti dissi che mi ricordavi Tanguy.Le eruzioni sono continuate e l'arcobaleno della natura ha conquistato la tua tavolozza;tu disegnatore hai dovuto arrenderti (di nuovo e per nostra fortuna) alla potenza diquanto immagini, alla forza dei ricordi, alla prepotenza di qualcosa che non accettadi essere semplicemente citato a fondo pagina.Mi chiedo se quelle linee di frattura che talvolta spezzano il caos non siano dei tuoitentativi di mettere un pò di ordine. Fai bene a provarci, ma la sincronicità di piùvisioni che racconti è troppo forte.La tua natura è quella dei romantici, non so se vincerai, ma da eroe accetti il tuodestino qualunque esso sia. Ne sei costernato, così ti sento; ma il tuo dramma si traducein un patrimonio d'arte che ammiro e sento anche mio.

Dear Massimo,

now that your show in Milan is organized I can look back with a certainclarity; and it seems that there's a single thread that starts in the first imagesof your works that you sent me a few years ago now, and arrives in the latestset of paintings that you're going to exhibit.What a surprise it was when you wrote to me of your decision to dedicateyour heart and soul to painting.I knew you as a sensitive photographer, but I rediscovered you as a paintertrue of heart, mind and hands: the same care, the same attention, butmultiplied on canvas. It was the true Massimo Angèi coming out into theopen, declaring himself conquered by the call of the muses, and acceptingthe burden of giving shape and colour to the emotions inside. I was struck byyour moderated use of colour, as if to keep your distance from explosions; Isaw you/myself swimming in deep waters watching the spectacle betweennature and the surreal. This is why I told you that I was reminded of Tanguy.The eruptions have continued and the rainbow of nature has utterly conqueredyour palette; The draughtsman inside of you had to give in (again andfortunately for us) to the power of what your mind creates, the power ofmemories, the arrogance of something that refuses to be just mentioned atthe bottom. I wonder if those fault lines that sometimes break the chaos arenot an attempt by you to create some form of order. You are right to try, butthe synchronicity of the several visions you describe is too strong.Your nature is that of the Romantics, I do not know if you will win, but likea hero you accept your fate whatever it may be.Maybe you are shocked, I sense you are, but your drama translates into aheritage of art that I admire and I also feel is my own.
