Paul SchafferThe Library Director
“Yes, I am retiring at the end of May after serving as LibraryDirector for 27 years. I was hired as Library Director andbegan working in May 1984” said Mr. Schaffer.
“I consider myself very fortunate to have had theopportunity to serve in this position. This communitydeserves credit for supporting this library, bothfinancially and in other ways, with the result that thislibrary has developed into a dynamic institution. Notonly does the Massena Public Library offer greatresources, but it has developed into an active culturalcenter. As Director, I have enjoyed the great varietyof duties from selecting new books and DVDs toorganizing concerts, art shows and other cultural
events. I suppose what I have likedmost about my job is the greatvariety of responsibilities: fromcreating budgets to helping
individuals find information towriting grants.
Of course, I have enjoyed working withvery nice people who work on the staff and who serve
on the board. It is with mixed feelings that I am leaving.”

Wireless internet access just keeps spreading andevolving. 3G, Wi-Fi, 4G, it just keeps getting better! Why?—because people want it! I know I definitely do.I don’t want to be in the stone ages anymore then thenext guy. If some old guy in a cave in Afghanistan isenjoying a cup of coffee and keeping abreast of worldnews via high-speed internet access, I’d like to be ableto do the same here in my own country. It’s not aboutkeeping up with the Jones’s—it’s about keeping upwith the times, and living! It’s about connecting withothers and re-connecting with long lost friends andfamily wherever they are. At McDonald’s they’ve beenrunning a special for $1 any size cup of coffee. Sweet. And there’s always free Wi-Fi available, for thoseenjoying their food & beverage inside. Don’t you justlove America?! We are living the dream, people…because others have realized that if they build it, wewill come. Mark Zuckerberg realized that when he wascreating Facebook. In almost every corner of the globe, this is common knowledge: people want wirelessinternet access. And here in America, we don’t want itjust at McDonalds. We want it everywhere—evenwhile on the interstate, hence the 3G, 4G. Whenever Idrive to Texas, I setup a wireless network in our mini-van for the passenger and children to all be connected, watching the news, studying, streaming videos, playing games, surfing the web. Bush said America isaddicted to oil. Now that was just ridiculous. It’s notlike the drugs being smuggled into our country tomeet the demand of the addicted and the afflicted. Orlike all the mass quantities of alcohol consumed byBush in his unruly youth. This culture is nothing likethat!
It’s about getting where we want to go. We use oil toget to work, school, go visit friends & family, etc., andto have food & products delivered to our stores! Andwe use the internet to get information into our mindsquickly, and to network & communicate. What I don’tget is why there aren’t more restaurants, cafes, andcoffee shops in Massena providing Wi-Fi access. It’s notlike developing an electrical infrastructure for theAmish. If there is free Wi-Fi access in an establishment, wouldn’t it attract more business? The Massena Newswould like to have a list of every establishment in townproviding Free Wi-Fi access. Visitmassenanews.thelocalseeker.com and place yourcomment as to where one can get free Wi-Fi access. While you’re there, comment if you think a moreinteractive website for the Massena News would bemore beneficial to the community. Mention whichfeatures you would like available on the website.Development is underway for a more interactive andengaging website. If I build it, will you come? TheMassena News wants to know.

Escape to the MassenaPublic Library
We all choose the life we lead. Moreover, weall also choose whether to be bad, mediocre, good, or great at what we do with that life.Anyone can be good at anything--take theirlemons and turn ‘em into lemonade—andthat’s…well…good. But to be great takes anentirely different breed of person towant to go all that extradistance. Unique.D r i v e n .
(Very)Special.
Especiallyin thesed i ffi c u l ttimes!—whybend overbackwards to
contribute, whenproducing lemonade will be sufficient?(Especially in a collapsing economy whenbeing sufficient can pass as more than justsufficient!) The hassles never seem worth theeffort to achieve greatness to an ordinaryperson. But an extraordinary person cannotsettle for anything less. He confrontschallenge head-on, is not afraid of defeat, andnever gets dissuaded from his moral fortitudeand sense of obligation to society. And that iswhy we have a great library—because ofgreat leadership, from the dedicated board oftrustees and staff members, and from all thesupport of the town board, but especiallyfrom whom this article and interview is thefocus on: library director Paul L. Schaffer. Hereis a great leader who spent 27 years of his lifemaking a great and lasting contribution to

our community. The library isawesome!
It is the 2nd largest library inNorthern NY, meeting andexceeding expectations. Massenashould be proud—and, most ofall, thankful! Mr. Schaffer’s work
will continue to have, for many years afterhis retirement, apositive impact onthe lives of many citizens, because of his 27 years ofdedication, devotion, andservice to community.Infrastructures & servicesl i k ethat ofo u r
library donot just happen.
These are made by thehard work of many, andmaterialized by thepersistent vision anddetermination of greatleaders. Massena is veryfortunate to have a librarythat’s designed to crushnegative thought patternsattempting to defeat aperson in life. Since we allneed to just ‘Get away’ oncein a while, this is a greatenvironment to do it in—especially for our youths. One can escape at theLibrary, and free their spirit. The MassenaPublic library opens the mind, stimulates theintellect, frees the attitude, and ultimatelygives hope by making it possible for one tofind one’s own way. The attention to detailand spotless cleanliness is evidence of theorganizational methods and interest taken in
Affordable Southern Cooking, with Northern HospitalityThe Ponderosa Steakhouse is our family favorite. That’s our kind of eating and atmosphere right there—I tellyou what. We just love it! We love the food, we love the staff, we love the sheer volume of selections, and weespecially love the price. Looking at the number of cars in the parking lot with Canadian license plates, guesseven across the river, word gets around where to go for some great Southern cooking and Southern hospitality.Well, last Tuesday our son Josh turned 10. And where did he want his birthday meal? Yup, sure enough: The
Ponderosa. Wow…the children were all so happy. We get there, and it turns outthat children 12 and under eat free that day. More happiness. Me & wife Julia eachtook on the ‘The Great Steak vs Shrimp Showdown’ with buffet. Our teenage son,his girlfriend, and our other 4 children all had the buffet. There were 8 of us. Me &Julia drank water; everyone else, soft drinks and milk. The price for this enormous,all-you-can-eat meal for the whole family: just $45. Half of us were eating for free.
The steak was juicy, sizzling, and delicious; the garlic butter grilled shrimp, mouthwatering. Very satisfying. And the buffet, oh my goodness—so much tochoose from. I always tell my children “Don’t take it just because it’s there. Youtake it, you eat it!” And that they do. I practice what I preach. And I do that gladly. From the buffet I got meatballs, chicken wings, baked beans, stuffing, mashed
potatoes & gravy, rolls, nachos and hot melted cheese. Julia, an entirely different wildassortment to suit her own taste buds. The whole meal for me was like a desert, so at this point I gotta tryto resist the desert buffet and get some fruit instead. Mmmmnnnnn… peaches, strawberry dipped bananas, pineapple. Yummy. I’m in heaven, ya’ll. The children are creating a ruckus. They’re in heaven too, making joyful
noises. The staff, spearheaded by Shift Coordinator Sandy Douglas (5 in all), brought Josh a huge piece ofchocolate cake with a MOUNTAIN of ice cream, singing happy birthday. Josh was very happy. Thank you,
Ponderosa! Massena, the Ponderosa, on 341 Main Street, is a great family restaurant. The food is absolutely
delicious; price is fabulous; the service, super friendly. Leave a nice tip. They earn it.

Lenten luncheons are
returning to St. John’s Church,
Massena!
This long-time tradition has been a favorite of
Massena residents for over 40 years. An
ecumenical worship service is held at 12:00 noon
on five Wednesdays during Lent, starting on March
16, and continuing through April 13, at St. John’s
Episcopal Church, 139 Main St. It is sponsored by
the Greater Massena Ministerial Association. The
theme of the messages this year is “Wait.”
Lunch in the church social hall follows each service,
starting at approximately 12:30. It has
traditionally been provided by the ladies of St.
John’s. Recently, in the spirit of ecumenism,
the ladies of several other local churches also
participate in the preparation and serving of
the meals. The price of each lunch is $5.00.
Proceeds will be divided between St. Vincent
de Paul and the monthly Free Community
Supper at the First Methodist. Menus are as
follows:
March 16 – Ham and Scalloped
Potato Casserole with molded
Jello salad, prepared by St.
John’s Episcopal Church.
All are welcome!

Slam Dunk Favorites
(Family Features) When March Madness tips off, Iknow it’s time for some fun foods that will be slam-dunk favorites at game-watching parties.
Chips and other munchies are always good, but Ithought I’d spice things up a bit with these two recipes – they’re easyto hold and eat while cheering on our favorite underdogs.
Tex-Mex seasonings liven up these mini meatballs, which are greatfor dipping in salsa and sour cream. Putting them on skewers makesthem fun for guests of all ages.
Smoked almonds team up with creamy Carnation to make a greatblue cheese dip for wings, veggies or crackers. Be sure to have plentyof napkins!
For more ways to enjoy the hoopla of March Madness, includingrecipes, nutritional information and tips, visitwww.TheCookingMilk.com.

Female Fix-It-Y o u r s e l fRevolution -Solve FiveC o m m o nH o u s e h o l dProblems
As March 8th was theInternational women’s
day, we thought it was appropriate to give womenempowering tips about common householdproblems to commemorate the occation.
(Family Features) From pink screwdrivers andmini toolboxes to a surge of female-targetedhome improvement sites and guidebooks, thefix-it-yourself revolution has come for womenin the U.S. More empowered females are takingon household problems themselves instead ofspending the money to hire a plumber, electrician or contractor.
In fact, a recent study by the Medelia Monitorshowed that more than 60 percent of womenare more likely to tackle the work on their own.The majority of these women (63 percent) arebeing more resourceful to avoid the high costs
of hiring a professional. And 71 percent of womensay the desire to "fix-it-myself" stems from theempowering feeling of having the knowledge toimprove their home.
Sound familiar? If you'd like to empower yourself andjoin the fix-it-yourself revolution, start by picking upa few affordable tools and products to tackle quickfixes. Here are easy tips for solving five commonhousehold problems:
* Unstick sticky windows by opening them andrubbing wax or spraying silicone into the tracks onboth sides. Move the window up and down severaltimes to work the wax or silicone lubricant into theframe.
* Fix squeaky wood or tile floors by sprinkling babypowder on the surface of the floor that's squeaking. Then place a chisel between the boards and gentlyhammer the top to pry up the tile or floorboard.Sprinkle more baby powder underneath the boardto seal the excess space causing the squeaking.
* If your drains are draining slowly or cloggedcompletely, try a de-clogging gel that clears thetoughest clogs at a fraction of the cost of a plumberhouse call. Liquid-Plumr's new Penetrex Gel is a fast-acting, powerful formula that can clear the toughestclogs in just seven minutes.
* Mend unsightly holes or tears in your windowscreens by using a screwdriver to straighten thebends in the mesh and dabbing clear nail polishto seal the hole. Allow it to dry. Then repeat thepolish application until the hole is completelysealed.
* A wobbly table leg may seem hard, but it's asurprisingly easy repair. Just figure out how it'sattached to the seat. Then either screw the legback into its socket or glue it back into place.
Fix-it resources abound online and at your localbookstore. But here's a few to get you started:
* Facebook.com/LiquidPlumr: Most cloggeddrains are caused by hair. Get tips on how to keepall drains clear and while you're there, enter theBig Locks Rock! Contest before December 15th fora chance to win a trip for four to L.A. to get haircutsby a celebrity stylist.
* BeJane.com: A site where women of all ages andskill levels can find answers to home improvementquestions and connect with others for inspirationand advice.
* "Dare to Repair" by Julie Sussman: This bookoffers a "do-it-herself" guide to fixing almostanything in the home.
