MASSACHUSETTS: IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Colony: MassachusettsFounder: Massachusetts Bay Company (Included investors in the failed Dorchester Company)Massachusetts Bay Company, an English chartered company that made the Massachusetts Bay colony in New England. Called the New England Company. The group got a grant of land between the Charles and Merrimack rivers, extending to the “South Sea” from the Council for New England. John Endecott became leader of the colony at Naumkeag (later Salem). In 1629 the New England Company got a royal charter as the “Governor and Company of the Massachusetts Bay in New England.” A group led by John Winthrop signed the Cambridge Agreement, so they started to emigrate to New England if they could buy out the stock of the company and gain control of the company's government and charter. The royal charter didn’t specify where the stockholders should meet, so the Massachusetts Bay Company became the only one of the English chartered colonization companies not controlled by the governor's in England. The colonists sailed for New England in 1630.

MASSACHUSETTS: IMPORTANT INFORMATION

The Massachusetts Bay Company had originally come to New England for trading purposes, but it’s focus quickly changed to religion. Puritans were discontent with the Church of England, and wanted to ‘purify’ the church and their lives. They first tried to do this in Holland, but were not happy there. They then set out for New England, or America.

Certain businesses, mostly shipbuilding, fisheries, and the fur and lumber trades, quickly got started. In 1632 ships built in the colony began trading with other colonies, England, or foreign ports in Europe. By 1660 the colony's merchant fleet was estimated at 200 ships, and by the end of the century its shipyards were estimated to turn out several hundred ships annually. In the early years the fleet carried principally fish, to places from the West Indies to Europe. It was common for a merchant to ship dried fish to Portugal or Spain, pick up wine and oil for transport to England, and then carry finished goods from England back to the colony. Larger communities supported craftsmen skilled in providing many of the necessities of 18th century life. Some income-producing activities, like the carding, spinning, and weaving of wool and other fibers, took place in the home. The goods were transported to local markets.
