CLERGY CORNER INTENTIONS & CONTACT

Dear Parishioners,

This coming Thursday, we observe the anniversary of the horrible events of 9-11. Since that terrible day, sad to say terrorism and senseless violence still abound in our world. And, of course, we in the United States are not the sole or even primary target. For example, the news is full of the atrocities being perpetrated against Christians in Iraq and Syria and by the Boko Haram in Nigeria among others.

Our Church’s liturgical calendar is replete with feasts of the martyrs, of those who have suffered and died because of their faith. We honor them from Saint John the Baptist, to Saints Peter and Paul, to Saints Agnes, Cecelia and Vibiana (secondary patroness of our Archdiocese whose feast day was September 1), to Saints Lorenzo Ruiz and Pedro Calungsod, to St. Maximilian Kolbe, to the scores of Mexican, Korean, Ugandan and Vietnamese martyrs. We admire their courage and fidelity.

How terrible that we live in a world where people still are executed for their religious convictions – whether Christian, Jewish, Islamic or any other. How tragic that hatred and anger can run so rampant in the human heart that it can be used to “justify” such terrible atrocities.

The heart-wrenching tragedy of current events is brought home to me because of my friend, Father Anwar, a priest of the Assyrian-Chaldean Catholic Church who completed a Masters degree with us at St. John’s Seminary. He was a cherished member of our seminary community for several years. He is a native of Mosul, Iraq, and his family has lived there and practiced the Catholic faith for centuries. He spoke to us simply yet eloquently of the kind of pressures faced by Catholics in Iraq – even before the rise of ISIS.

I invite all of us to keep the cause of persecuted Christians (and persecuted believers of any faith) in our prayers. Let us pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ in the midst of their terrible suffering, as they face possible martyrdom. May the truth of the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus be for them a source of hope and strength! Let us also pray for the perpetrators of such terrible atrocities – just as Jesus prayed for his executioners as he hung on the cross – that they may experience a change of heart and renounce the evil that has consumed them.

Jesus, who suffered and died for us, be our strength. Mary, whose heart was rent by sorrow, pray for us.

Father Craig

The commitment to help our children transcends ethnicity and reflects the American spirit. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children offers easy-to-use safety resources in English and Spanish to help parents and guardians protect children. OLPH FINANCIAL SNAPSHOT

Dear Parishioners, This is another of a series of regular “financial snapshots” related to our parish’s income and expenses. Our average weekly expenses are $30,000.For the weekend of August 30-31, our collection was: $17,677.00. In addition to income from our weekly collection, the parish benefits greatly from our annual fund-raiser, the Parish BBQ. For the BBQ in 2013, the net profit to the parish was $99,810.56. This is a great help, amounting to the equivalent of four to five weekly collections. Thus, those who work so hard to make our annual BBQ a success are angels for us all.As impressive as the amount raised by the BBQ is, it amounts to only 5% of the money we need annually to operate the parish and fulfill our mission. The Lord is generous to us; please be generous in supporting the mission and programs of our parish family. Thank you. - Fr. Craig

REPAIRS TO CONFESSIONALSThe indicator lights in all three of our confessionals have been repaired. When the priest is in the confessional, he will turn on the light that says “pastor” or “associate.” When a penitent is in the confessional, the small “button light” near the entrance door will be illuminated. If that light is on, please wait until the person ahead of you completes his or her confession and exits. Thank you.

EXPLORING THE MEANING OF THE ROSARYHave you ever wondered why Catholics pray the Rosary? Does it seem the Rosary is not for you because it’s just repeating the same thing over and over and over? If so, you are invited to join us as we continue to explore the meaning and experience the power of this incredible gift to our Church. Please join us on Friday, September 12th, at 7:00 p.m. as the CWO hosts our monthly Rosary for faith, study and fellowship in the Junipero Serra Room at the Pastoral Center. Please call Aurora Bertulfo at 661-755-0843 for more details and to reserve your spot. There is no fee and refreshments will be served.

WE’RE MEETING THIS FRIDAY!The Italian Catholic Club of Santa Clarita Valley meets monthly at the American Legion Hall, Post #507 (behind the new Newhall Library on Lyons Avenue). Dinner/Meetings are every second Friday of the month at 6:30 p.m. Our mission is to have fun, fun, fun. Reservations are a must! Everyone is invited to join us. Please call Anna Di Masi Riggs for any information or reservations at 661-645-7877. Ciao.

BARBECUE WEEKENDThere will be NO 5:30 p.m. Spanish Mass on Sunday, September 21st, due to the excessive noise from the Barbecue. In consideration of our neighboring businesses, on Barbecue weekend please do not park in the lot behind the shops on the east side of the church or in the Starbucks/CVS/Ralph’s shopping center. These are private parking lots and the store owners have told us that they will have cars towed.

Our students also attend Mass each week and on the holy days of obligation, receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation three times a year, learn to pray the Stations of the Cross and the Rosary and participate in other traditions of our Catholic faith. Our students are taught by highly qualified, credentialed teachers. In addition to our core curriculum, all students stay active by participating in PE classes twice a week, learn to use data bases, spreadsheets and much more in our weekly computer classes and learn about singing in our music classes. OLPH students may also choose to join our school choir or learn how to play an instrument. We have a wonderful librarian and a fully-stocked library. Our students participate in the Accelerated reading program and have read over 600 books so far this year. Our after school sport’s program invites students in all grades to participate (K-8). We are fortunate to have an active Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) and very involved parents. We are proud of our school and welcome parishioners from all three Santa Clarita parishes to come see the great things that are happening at OLPH School.

Gracias.

Padre Craig
