William O Carroll-Fitzpatrick, Margaret Coyle, Terence Buckley, Dominic Kearney, Margaret Gregory, Caitlin Camps, Joan Clemas, Sean McGurk, Alice Parrat, Nina Knights, Gregory Sco, Bridie Verrier, Martha Halle & Marjorie Kearney. For a while, on Wednesday evening, it looked as if England was going to get into the World Cup Final. It was only then that I started to recall the last time they were in such a final, I was fifteen years old and unable to watch the match because I was busy as a drug courier”. Now, just in case you think that I have had a totally misspent youth, I need to explain. I had a Saturday afternoon job, working for a pharmacist in an affluent suburb of Greater Manchester. This often meant that I had to deliver prescriptions and other pharmaceutical goods to peoples homes, on my bicycle. My first paid job was when I was twelve years old. It was a Summer holiday job working for a greengrocer who had an old removal lorry kitted out with fruit and veg. I would knock on the doors of houses and take their orders, then take the produce back to them. I cant remember how much I was paid but I think it was just a few shillings (10p pieces) plus all the fruit I could eat. The world has changed a lot since those days in the 1960’s, but some things have stayed the same - love is better than hate, and good overcomes evil. It helps me to understand that God is ever new and always the same. I see him in a different light as I journey through life and I realise that England has more of a chance of winning a World Cup than I have of understanding God. However England can, at times, disappoint but God never fails to deliver.
