Basilica Schola

The Schola is on break until the fall, but will sing Ves-pers the first Sunday of each month during the summer. If you are interested in joining, contact Joshua, our Can-tor, at [email protected] to learn more. Hear our latest recording, available on iTunes, and find out more

about the music ministry at http://oldcathedral.org/music-at-the-basilica.

MUSIC AT THE BASILICA Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time This weekend, the Propers contain an charming little communion antiphon, the Passer invenit--members of our Schola are familiar with it, since we use it to teach them what a liquescent neume is. See those three notes above “et turtur”? There are three of this type of neume in succession: very unusual if not unique to my knowledge. These neumes are sung with a clear sound on the lower note while the higher note is sung in a manner that causes it to evaporate very quickly on the closing consonant (in this case a “t” and two lightly rolled “r”’s). Clearly, this blissed-out monk was trying to mimic the sound made by a turtle dove. Reponat is sung on a single note held through a dotted punctum and three successive repercussive notes before falling again and ending with in a relaxed, but expressive phrase. Then of course the nest is really a metaphor for the altar of the Lord, and this little chant becomes a hymn of praise to God, whose house we too are called to dwell in. There’s a lot in those notes! We usually insert verses of a psalm and sing the doxology before repeating the antiphon, which is the manner in which psalms are chanted. So listen in and enjoy it. After that we’ll hear a piece written for Communion by the great Louis Vierne (1870-1937); part of an “organ Mass” tradition, it is largely forgotten today that the organs were consecrated voices that spoke during liturgy. They were another voice in addition to the human voices that praised God during the Mass. It wasn't just the French who had organ masses, but there were different organ Mass traditions all around the world. At the 7:00 PM Mass, we will be joined by the Les Petits Chanteurs de Belgique-Lessines, a boys choir from Belgium, who are on tour in the United States. They will begin singing a choral prelude at 6:45 PM, with music by both Mendelssohn and Rutter, and also participate in our worship at Mass. We welcome them heartily to the Basilica, and thanks to Father Tanguy Riviere, their Chaplain; their conductor, Antho-ny Vigneron; and pianist Marin Morest.

CALLING ALL PHOTOGRAPHERS

The Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral is honored, with the blessing of Cardinal Dolan, to have HOLY DOORS at its sister church, the

Shrine Church of the Most Precious Blood for the duration of the Holy Year. With these Holy Doors open 24hrs a day, pilgrims passing through

them will benefit from indulgences and blessings. Pilgrims will reflect on the major theme of the Holy Year – the universal reach of God’s

mercy – by viewing a display of presepio, crafted in this city of Naples by La Scarabattola.

For those in a state of grace a plenary indulgence may be gained once day by passing through the Holy Doors. A plenary indulgence removes

all punishment due to sin.

Those seeking the indulgence are encouraged to begin a pilgrimage at the Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral. The pilgrim then may

proceed down to the Shrine Church of the Most Precious Blood where the Holy Doors of Mercy are located.

THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT: Is it possible to be Christian???

The Cardinals’ Appeal is an annual campaign to raise funds throughout the Archdiocese to support the wide array of

services and programs that serve people in need.

During this year of Mercy, it is more important than ever to be actively aware of the needs of our brothers and sisters in

need. The Cardinal’s Appeal addresses a wide range of human needs in neighborhoods of the Archdiocese. Many people and whole families are in crisis due to changes in economy as well as challenges that come to them through illness or accidents. In addition, the Cardinal’s Appeal assist in the education of youngsters and the care for older people who have become

frail, including nuns and priests.

Many thanks to all who made a gift to the Appeal! We made our goal of $47,000. It’s not too late to join in. We welcome your participation in this way of helping those

who need help.

You can make a gift to the Cardinal’s Appeal by using a pledge card provided or by going to the website at

www.cardinalsappeal.org. Don’t forget to use our designated number ( #94) when you make you gift.

Fr. George Kuhn moves to the Bronx A frequent celebrant here at the Old Cathedral, Fr. Kuhn will

move to the Archdiocesan retirement residence in Riverdale this week. Hopefully, he will visit us from time to time.

Tuesday, July 12 from 7:30 to 8:30 PM Parish House ~ 263 Mulberry Street

As an introduction to studying the New Testament, this session will focus on “Sermon on the Mount” found in the Gospel of

Matthew, Chapters 5-7. The issues of Inspiration, Canonization, Authorship will be reviewed as well as an overview of how and why Matthew composed this “Charter of Christian Conduct”.

COMING IN THE FALL A three-session course called “An Introduction to the New Tes-tament”. Students will meet on one evening for three consecu-tive weeks (dates to be determined). The course will provide a foundation for further exploration into the other parts of the Bi-

ble such as the Pentateuch, Prophets, Psalms, Gospels, Acts, Letters, Revelation. This three-session course will be repeated

three or four times during the year in order to attract newcomers to Bible study.

Meanwhile, there will be other courses on the Bible for people who have completed the “Introduction” or who have enough of a foundation to take mini-courses on the sections of the Bible

mentioned in the paragraph above.

Your are invited to participate in

BULLETIN NEWS JULY 9-10, 2016

CHANGE IN SCHEDULE FOR FUTURE MPB SENIOR CLUB LUNCHEONS: The senior luncheon for July 2016 WILL BE HELD ON TUESDAY, JULY 12TH as this was already published in the Bulletin. However, it has recently been decided that it simply makes more sense to hold the luncheon on the same day as our San Gennaro Novena Mass which takes place on Wednesdays. The coffee socials have already been changed to Wednesdays, as you know. RECAP OF OUR SOCIAL SCHEDULE: Both our weekly coffee socials AND our monthly senior luncheons will be held on Wednesdays beginning in August 2016. We hope this does not impact negatively on too many of our seniors who regularly at-tended the monthly lunch and preferred Tuesdays. We feel that having lunch immediately after the Mass will encourage attend-ance at both ‘events’. While attendance at Mass has been good, it can always be better and, therefore, we can serve more seniors at lunch – a win-win situation. THANKS TO: Elsie Elluzzi for the delicious Italian cookies, and to Anna Maniscalco for the soda and cups – these two parishioners donated these items for our coffee social last week. Many thanks to both of you. SAN GENNARO NOVENA MASSES: As mentioned above, every Wednesday at 12:10PM is a Novena Mass in honor of San Gennaro. Welcome home, Monsignor Russo, who recently re-turned from a well-deserved vacation. Msgr. Russo will be cele-brating this Mass each week. MANY THANKS & BLESSINGS to Father George Kuhn for filling in while Msgr. Russo was away. We loved having him here once again even if it was only for a few weeks. SANT’EGIDIO PRAYER SERVICE: Just a reminder that there is a weekly prayer service with the community of Sant’Egidio every Friday at 6:30PM – all are welcome to attend. BUSINESSES IN LITTLE ITALY: We would like to encourage you to patronize our local restaurants, cafes & various other businesses within our community. These businesses keep Little Italy alive and thriving – if they don’t do well, it is possible that one day the neighborhood of Little Italy as we know and love it will cease to exist. These restaurants and cafes are also the mer-chants who have been donating so generously to our monthly sen-ior luncheons. Where would be without their support? We need to support each other so that we can look forward to many more gen-erations of spiritual life at Most Precious Blood Church, as well as an active and profitable business life for the merchants in Little Italy -- one can’t exist without the other!
