Clergy Corner - Message From Deacon Peter Lawongkerd

Friends, When we read or listen to our Scripture Readings for the 6th Sunday it is easy to feel a sense of; "I personally cannot live up what God is asking from me.'' But that is where so many of us mistake what God is saying to us. I don't blame you for feeling like that. We are always being told; ''God is perfect and he expects you to be and live like Him.” But that is impossible, for God is God and we are little creatures. However Sirach assures us today that we can all live good and holy lives for God has made us good. God is Goodness itself, so it would be impossible for Him to create us bad. So Sirach assures us; ''If you choose you can keep the commandments.'' Does that mean we are perfect ? Of course not but we do have our perfect God always at our side only too ready to help us. God does not tell us about his goodness and power to make us feel small and inadequate or fearful. He is assuring us of his Love and his readiness to use His Infinite Love to help and save us.

This is what Paul is telling the Corinthians and ourselves today. We need to have a mature approach, and instead of being afraid and cowering before God, we need to look into the eyes of an all loving, and all seeing God, and recognize that he is with us and not against us. Why did he create us? Why did he become one of us as a poor baby? Why did he live a humble life like all of us? As Paul reminds us today: ''What eye has not seen, what ear has not heard what God has prepared for those who love him.'' God does not demand what is

impossible for us. He begs us to let Him into our hearts and into our lives. In our Gospel today it is easy at first sight to think that Jesus is making impossible demands of us and making a big fuss about little things that to us seem unimportant. The reason that Jesus is talking like this is due to the high regard and love he has for each and everyone one us. One of the most heart rending words your mom or dad can say to you is. ''I am disappointed in you, how could you?" It is so painful because you know you are better and should not have done such a stupid thing. When Jesus calls us to be our better selves, He is reminding us that each of us in our own way can be ''as perfect as our heavenly Father is perfect.'' Let us stop despairing and be our true selves created and helped by God. Blessings, Dcn Peter
