My Friends and Fellow Parishioners,

First, let me go back to Friday, June 24th. The Church does not celebrate many birthdays throughout the Liturgical Calendar; almost all

saints’ feast days are on the day they entered heaven, the day they died. But on Friday, we celebrated the Birth of John the Baptist. We do

not know the exact dates John the Baptist or Jesus was born. When the early Church Fathers were fixing the dates for feasts, they made an

interesting and enlightened decision. They fixed the date of the Baptist’s birth to the Summer Solstice and Jesus’ birthday to the Winter Sol-

stice. (Yes, the dates got moved off of the actual date of the Solstice to a few days later when the calendar was changed from the Julian

Calendar to the Gregorian Calendar). Their reasoning was inspired. What we all observe is that from June 21st to December 22nd, in the

Northern Hemisphere, the days get shorter and darkness encroaches incrementally each day. The world becomes darker as night falls soon-

er. But on December 22nd, light starts to win, the days become incrementally longer and darkness is driven back, seemingly defeated. The

symbolism is now obvious: until the coming of Christ, the world was darkened, but with Jesus’ birth the Light of God was born, bringing new

illumination.

The Readings, including the Second Reading this weekend (as you know, a relative rarity), have a common agrarian image, that of the oxen

yoke and plow. In the First Reading, in First Kings, we learn, “Elisha left him [Elijah] and taking the yoke of oxen, slaughtered them; he

used the plowing equipment for fuel to boil their flesh”. St. Paul to the Galatians said, “Do not submit again to the yoke of slavery.” And in

the Gospel, St. Luke reports these words of Jesus, "No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the king-

dom of God."

Jesus tells us not to be tied to the things of the world, but to follow Him. Jesus so loved us he willingly suffered, died, and was buried. How

do we respond to this love? Mother Teresa once said, “We should not serve the poor like they were Jesus. We should serve the poor be-

cause they are Jesus.” As you know, the St. Vincent de Paul Society is always looking for canned goods, cereal, and pasta to help feed those

in need. You can bring canned goods, etc. with you to Mass and leave them in the back of Church. If it is inconvenient for you to bring gro-

ceries to church, we have Poor Boxes in the back of all of our Churches. All money collected in these boxes goes directly to our Society.

Please check in your pockets and see if you do not have some money to share.

Post Cana is an organization for widows and widowers to help allevi-

ate their loneliness and isolation. Post Cana holds monthly dances at

Talleyville Memorial Hall in North Wilmington. Monthly lunches are

held at Michael’s Restaurant in Christiana. Please consider joining

Behold Publications, LLC Little Flowers Girls’ Club will host

their annual Mid-Atlantic Regional Mary’s Garden Party

Camp at the Freedom Center in Leesburg, VA on July 8-10,

2016. All Catholic girls age five and up and their mothers

are invited, whether they have any previous involvement in

Little Flowers Girls’ Club or not. The cost is only $125 for

the mother/daughter lodge accommodations or $65 if tent

• Public school students, as well as current nonpublic school students, may apply.

• Visit www.marylandpublicschools.org/boosT to find a list of eligible schools. Contact schools directly to be sure they intend to participate in the BOOST program.

hoW can you prepare To apply?The Maryland nonpublic schools’ coalition, Maryland Council for American Private Education (CAPE), wants your family to be notified as soon as the scholarship application process opens. Take these TWo steps in preparation:

1. Visit www.educationmaryland.org/boosT to enter your information so we can notify you immediately when the application process is opened, and keep you updated about the program.

2. apply to the school or schools that your children are interested in attending. Please be sure that your desired school choices are on the list of eligible schools.

hoW Will The program Work?• A BOOST Advisory Board appointed by the state legislature will certify the scholarship recipients and determine final scholarship award amounts.

• Scholarships will then be awarded by the State Department of Education to students at the direction of the Advisory Board, and will be available for the 2016-17 school year.

• More information and applications will be available on the Maryland State Department of Education’s website at www.marylandpublicschools.org/boosT.
