DEACON’S BENCH

My Friends and Fellow Parishioners,

This is the 17th week of Ordinal Time. There are 34 weeks in Ordinal Time, so we are about half-way to Advent. This is also the last week-

end in July, so summer is 2/3 over. The wheel keeps turning.

Today’s First Reading, Responsorial Psalm, and Gospel have this theme in common: what do you value? Our First Reading, from 1 Kings, is

a conversation between God and Solomon. We remember hearing about the “wisdom of Solomon”; this is where it began. God asked Solo-

mon what he would like God to do for him and he said: “Give your servant, therefore, an understanding heart to judge your people and to

distinguish right from wrong.” God was impressed at his selflessness, and granted his request. The Responsorial Psalm proclaims, “ The law

of your mouth is to me more precious than thousands of gold and silver pieces.” The “law” that the psalmist refers to is God’s kindness and

compassion. Our Gospel, continuing from Matthew, which we have heard frequently during this liturgical cycle (back to the wheel that con-

tinues to turn), tells us, “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field,” or like a “pearl of great price, he [a merchant] goes and

sells all that he has and buys it.”

So my dear friends ask yourselves: what do I value? What am I willing to do to gain it?

Saint Mother Teresa once said, “We should not serve the poor like they were Jesus. We should serve the poor because they are Jesus.” As

you know, the St. Vincent de Paul Society is always looking for canned goods, cereal, and pasta to help feed those in need. You can bring

canned goods, etc. with you to Mass and leave them in the back of Church. If it is inconvenient for you to bring groceries to church, we have

Poor Boxes in the back of all of our Churches. All money collected in these boxes goes directly to our Society. Our St. Vincent de Paul Society

opens its doors to give help three times a week to those who are in need. Please check in your pockets and see if you do not have some

money to share.

Thank you!

Bereavement Ministry

Bereavement Ministry—Am I going crazy?”

Am I going crazy? This is a question often asked during the journey

through grief. Come join us and find others who are traveling along this

often painful and confusing path. Share stories of hope and find peace with

those who understand and empathize with what you are experiencing.

Please come join us at the St. Agnes Meeting Room. Meetings are held on

the first and third Mondays of each month from 7 pm to 8 pm. For more

information, please call Bill and Anne Fazio 410-378-2092.

Adult bible study

Bible Study at St. Agnes Wednesday evenings at 7:00 pm. Study will re-

sume in September on a new book of the bible.

For Information please call Kristin at 410-642-6534.

The Prayer Shawl Guild meets on the first Tuesday of each month from 1

PM to 3 PM at the St. Agnes Meeting Room. We hope to offer warmth and

the message of God’s blessings to those in need of comfort. The Prayer

Shawl Ministry uses yarn to create prayer shawls to comfort and warm

those in need. For instance: those working through cancer treatment, sig-

nificant illness, the loss of a loved one--people who would benefit

from being wrapped in prayers and love. Members of this ministry will knit

and crochet special shawls and blankets that will receive a pastoral bless-

ing. Each shawl or blanket begins and ends with prayers and blessings for

the recipient. For further information regarding the Prayer Shawl Guild,

please call Anne Fazio at 410-378-2092.

Please contact Marie Sypolt at the Parish Office to request a prayer shawl

for someone in need.

V encuentro

Our after school program has opportunities for employment for the

2017-2018 school year. It could be 2 to 3 days a week from 2-5:45

pm. This position would be taking care of students that stay after

school. They would over see snacks, homework, and play. If you or

someone that you know is interested, please email Mrs. Pileggi at

[email protected].

Parishes in the Diocese of Wilmington are currently engaging in a

reflection and discernment process as a part of the Fifth National

Encuentro, a four-year process of consultation, discernment, dis-

cussion, and collaboration. The main goal of the V Encuentro is to

discern ways for the Church in the United States to better respond

to the ever-growing Hispanic presence, and to help Hispanic Catho-

lics to strengthen their Christian identity and their response as mis-

sionary disciples for the entire Church.

To help fund these activities, a second collection will take place the

weekend of August 26 & 27, 2017. Please be as generous as possi-

ble.

Las parroquias de la diocesis de Wilmington estan actualmente par-

ticipando en un proceso de reflexion y discernimiento como parte

del Quinto Encuentro Nacional, un proceso de cuatro anos de con-

sultas, discernimiento, discussion y colaboracion.
