HAVE YOU REMEMBERED IHM IN YOUR WILL? After the needs of your loved ones have been addressed, a charitable bequest to your parish will allow you to continue in perpetuity the Christian stewardship you practice in life. The Catholic Foundation of North Georgia can assist you in remembering IHM in your Last Will and Testament. Those who make a bequest or a planned gift to the parish become members of the parish Legacy Society and the Archdiocesan Deo Gratias Society. For more information, contact Juliette Greco of the Catholic Foundation of North Georgia at [email protected] or 404-497-9440.

When IHM Vincentians work with The Poor, they sometimes see much more than the immediate need, although that’s usually the spark that leads to the phone call for help. A recent case in Decatur makes the point.

A mother and 5 children 4 to 15 years of age were living in their car for weeks! They were forced to vacate their home rental because DeKalb County forced them to move out saying the home was not safe to live in. We don’t begin to know how living in a car behind a WalMart is safer, but we are trained to look past this illogi-cal situation and help them get out of that car and into a safe situation as fast as possible. It did not help that the landlord did not promptly refund the deposit to the dilapidated home, causing the mother to keep her family in the car for weeks.

Our IHM Vincentians met her at the WalMart and in as quiet a spot as they could find, spoke to her about her needs, took all the necessary information, and said some prayers too. They recommended we extend ourselves above and beyond to get them the deposit needed to move in. They also provided them with some gro-cery store gift cards to help them with food and necessities. Thankfully, due to the support of our IHM parishioners, this family is now soon to be off the street and into a safe home.

If a parishioner needs help, they can call 678-892-6163. If you would like more information about volunteering with St. Vincent de Paul, reach out to Robin Patton at [email protected].

Q What is the Rite of Acceptance?

A The Rite of Acceptance is the first time the inquirers, in the midst of the assembly, voice their intention to accept the Gospel, follow the way of Christ , and seek initiation in the Church. The Church receives them as people desiring membership and their senses (forehead, ears, eyes, lips, heart, shoulders, hands, and feet) are “signed” with the Sign of the Cross, indicating that Christ claims them and all their faculties as his own. After the homily, catechumens may be presented with a Bible of cross. They are then kindly dismissed to reflect on the Word, for those already baptized the Rite of Welcoming celebrates their desire to be re-ceived into full communion with the Catholic Church or for one who is baptized Catholic, their desire to complete their initiation with the Sacraments of Confir-mation and Eucharist. Great care must be taken to distinguish the baptized be-cause they are already part of the Body of Christ, though not fully initiated. For more information about the process of Christian Initiation at IHM, contact Drew Denton in the parish office.

RITE OF ACCEPTANCE Sunday, November 18 The Rite of Acceptance and Welcoming will be celebrated at IHM next Sunday, November 18, during the 11:30am and 1:30pm Masses. This year’s catechumens and candidates have come to us by many different paths—we thank God for lead-ing them this far by faith. Please pray for them and help us offer them a warm wel-come next week.

ADVENT OPEN HOUSE Sunday, December 2 Come celebrate the new liturgical year in the historic church, following the 9:00am and 5:00pm Masses on the First Sunday of Advent. Come hear the beautiful Advent music, learn Advent customs from around the world and make Advent wreaths and other crafts for the home. All are welcome!
