WALKING WITH A LIGHTER CARBON FOOTPRINT
Written by: Linda Anne Burtis
Close to 100% of climate scientists tell us that it is extremely likely that fossil fuels emit carbon dioxide causing climate change. We all share in the problem every
time we flip lights on, open the refrigerator door, and drive off in our cars. Many people and institutions have begun to measure their carbon footprint and then take steps to reduce it. The Creation Care Committee is studying the carbon footprint here at St. Vincent’s. Pope Francis’ climate change encyclical, Laudato Si, encourages all of us to use less fossil fuel and bring a “halt to environmental degradation.” St. Vincent’s is way ahead of the green curve. In 2000, Dan Bernadette installed solar shingles on the roof of the Parish Center. In 2013, the church’s over 50 year old boilers were replaced with high energy efficient natural gas boilers. All the lights in the church building are now LED. Betsy even switched the Styrofoam cups used for coffee after Mass with ones made from tree bark! We can “be like St. Vincent’s” in our own homes. Several parishioners now have rooftop solar panels. We can use Compact Florescent Lightbulbs (CFL’s) or LED lights. Most homes suffer significant heat loss through the roof. Consider better insulation in the attic. Energy efficiency and using renewable power helps us to be part of the solution to pollution and walk with a lighter carbon footprint.
