This Breaks my Heart This week some scammer got an email list from Berlin, not the parish, and attached my name to it requesting that the recipient contact me immediately. The email address this request was sent from wasn’t my email address. The subject line even said God Bless. When people responded, and some did, the scammer requested money or iTunes cards in my name. Many people understood what this was, but some of our senior citizens didn’t, and because of their concern for me sent money as requested. I will never ask you for money via email. Please don’t even respond to these emails, and I am so sorry for those who were taken advantage of. What a shame. Let’s pray for the dishonest that prey on good trust-ing souls, may their hearts be changed. If you have been a victim in this scam, please contact the Berlin Police Depart-ment. They have already begun an investigation. Welcome Friar Franck This week we welcome Friar Franck. He will be doing a summer internship with us and he is very excited to be with us. We have included a short biography and picture of him in the bulletin. Please make sure that you make our new friar, who is in formation, feel welcome here at St. Paul Par-ish. What a Great Evening The other night some of our Religious Ed Catechists and Youth Ministers gathered in Church for Adoration and some prayer time. They followed this up with some refreshments and a bonfire on the green. It was a wonderful night. The time before our Lord present in the Eucharist was peaceful and beautiful and the time together on the green was a per-fect way to end the evening. We have so much to be grate-ful for. I wish you could have been there. It was beautiful.
A New Exciting Initiative Several parishes in Connecticut have joined together to form a single large Parish Raffle. The top prize is $30,000. Our Pastoral Council has decided to join this initiative un-der the direction of Paul Miano. This fundraiser will be ex-clusively for parish and school and will help cover both our operating and capital improvement costs. I am sure you will all remember that this year brought an extensive in-crease in our expenses with the increase of the parish assessment. Unexpectedly, we also received a bill for over $20,000 for elevator repairs and inspections. Quite frankly, I believe we need this Raffle to be a success if we expect to finish the year in the black. We will be speaking more about this Raffle in the near future. Our goal is to sell over 2000 tickets. New Parishioners As you can see, 10 families joined our parish this month, many of them with beautiful young people. We asked a couple of them why they chose us. Their answers includ-ed: We love the Sunday Masses; your parish seems alive with lots of opportunities to get involved; there seems to be a lot of activities for our children; St. Paul School is well known as an excellent school and that’s what we want for our children. I was so touched by their presence at the registration meeting and enjoyed my time together with them. I want to thank Nancy Timbrell, the Parish Council President, for coordinating this program. I also want to commend our Parish Council’s efforts to expand and im-prove this initiative. We need to do everything we can to make our parish warm and welcoming. As the sign says on the front of our Church, “All are Welcome Always”.

Welcome Friar Franck! Saint Paul School News
Friar Franck Lino Sokpolie (22) was born in Lomé, Togo. He spent some time in Europe before immi-grating with his family to the Unit-ed States in 2006. During his first year of college, Franck took the time to discern his vocation. After visiting a number of religious or-ders, Franck felt called to the Con-ventual Franciscans as he experi-enced their ministries, spirituality and community life. Upon joining the newly formed “Our Lady of the Angels” province, Franck Lino made his postu-lancy in Chicago and his novitiate in Mishawaka, Indiana. Franck professed his first vows as a Conventual Francis-can Friar (OFM Conv.) in California in 2016.
He currently lives at the House of Studies in Washington D.C. and is a philosophy major at the Catholic University of America. When asked about his vocation, Friar Franck says “In my discernment, I became aware that my vocation came with a strong desire for community, prayer and ser-vice. It was a thirst that could only be quenched by being in God’s service in this way. I embraced the call to serve, after distinguishing God’s voice from the many other voic-es I was hearing. Respectively, my vocation (the call) be-came the center of my life, that is to say, my mission. Ap-propriately the joy of acknowledging God’s call pervaded my life in every way and is shown to me through my broth-ers and all the wonderful people I have met.”
He shares his gratitude to St. Paul community for the warm welcoming as he begins in summer assignment, which is an integral and significant part of a friar’s initial formation. Friar Franck asks you to pray for him and for the other stu-dent friars in initial formation.
We are grateful for the continued interest in our school, and enjoyed speaking to, and meeting all of the parents and grandparents who made inquiries. Thank you for your support!
Although we are at, or near, capacity in some of the grades, we do still have room in others. We would love to tell you more about what SPS has to offer. Please call or e-mail us today!

Catechists and Youth Ministry Team members gathered for Eucharistic Adoration followed by a bonfire on the parish green. It was an opportunity for reflection and fellowship. I sometimes wonder what the disciples felt like when Jesus told them that he had to leave them. Probably a little confused, startled, and worried. I don’t blame them, the man they came to know and love was no longer going to be by their side. In fact, Scripture says that because of this news, grief filled the disci-ples hearts (John 16:6), and yet Jesus still tells them that it is “better for you that I go” (John 16:7). I can only imagine the disciples disbelief. “What? Se-riously Jesus? It is actually better for us that you go??” Jesus tells them that yes, it is better that He leaves, because only then will the Advocate come. The Advocate that Jesus promises is the Holy Spirit, who guides us into all truth (John 16:13). Jesus knew he had to leave the disciples because he had to leave to accomplish the work of salvation. It was better that Jesus left not only because he was to win victory on the cross, but also so that we would have the Holy Spirit as our guide on earth. I often fail to let the Holy Spirit guide me into truth. In fact, sometimes I am so focused on my own way that I block the Holy Spirit from my life. The biggest obsta-cle of allowing the Holy Spirit to move is our will — MY WAY... Read the rest of it here: https://lifeteen.com/blog/better-go/

Is it true that the feast of Pentecost, the cele-bration of the descent of the Spirit upon the followers of Jesus, was a Jewish pilgrimage festival?
Pentecost is only mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles, written by the author of Luke's Gospel. John's Gospel speaks of Jesus breathing the
Spirit upon his followers on Easter Sunday. Luke in Acts is the only one who unpacks the Easter events of Jesus' passion, death, resurrection, ascension, and the send-ing forth of the spirit in a period of fifty days. Luke chose the Jewish feast of Pentecost, or Shavuot, celebrated exactly fifty days after Passover, to highlight the send-
ing forth of the Spirit.
The Jews had three pilgrimage feasts-Passover, cele-brating the Exodus from Egypt; Shavuot, or festival of Weeks, celebrating the giving of the law on Mount Sinai; and Sukkot, the harvest festival of Booths, commemo-rating the forty years of wandering in the desert. Jour-ney to Jerusalem with festivals and rituals at the Temple

part and parcel of each pilgrimage feast. Shavuot celebrated the central covenant event in Jewish life, the giving of the law
to Moses on Mount Sinai.
The mighty wind, the shaking of the house in which the fol-lowers were gathered, along with the tongues of fire all reflect elements surrounding the giving of the law to Moses in the Book of Exodus. Luke was imaging this very backdrop and scenario in this significant event of the community being gift-ed with the Spirit. As the Torah was the way to God for Jews, so Jesus' Spirit was the guide, power, and path to God for his
followers.© 2011 Liturgical Publications Inc
