Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,

This Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of Christ, King of the Universe. It is a celebration that was added to the liturgical calen-dar of the Church by Pope St. Pius X in the early 20thcentury at a time when totalitarianisms were on the rise, to remind the world that there is one and only one person who can claim sovereignty over the entire created universe, Jesus Christ, true God and true man.

Indeed, as St. Paul tells the Colossians in the second reading, He is the One in whom, through whom and for whom everything that exists is created. He is both the King of the Universe and the Kingdom of God itself, because in Him everything acquires mean-ing and is brought to fulfillment.

On this solemnity of Christ the King, the Preface of the Eucha-ristic prayer, the part of Mass that begins with a short dialogue be-tween the priest and the congregation and concludes with the Holy, Holy, Holy; describes in a most beautiful way what this Kingdom is all about.

God the Father anointed his Only Begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, “with the oil of gladness as eternal priest and King of all creation, so that, by offering Himself on the altar of the Cross as a spotless sacrifice to bring us peace, he might accomplish the mys-teries of human redemption and making all created things subject to his rule, he might present to the immensity of God’s majesty an eternal and universal kingdom, a kingdom of truth and life, a king-dom of holiness and grace, a kingdom of justice, love and peace.”Truth, life, holiness, grace, justice, love and peace, these are the defining characteristics of the Kingdom ushered in by the Cross. For it is by his Passion, Death and Resurrection that the Lord Jesus establishes once and for all his sovereignty over creation and re-capitulates the entire universe bringing it to its fulfillment in God.This Kingdom is of course in “eschatological tension,” meaning that it is in relation to the end of times, that is why the Solemnity of Christ the King appears in the Church calendar at the end of the liturgical year, to remind us that the Kingdom is among us but the full manifestation of the effects of the Resurrection of Christ are not yet visible and will become so when He comes in glory and majesty at the end of times to judge the living and the dead.

This Kingdom is not one of serfs, but one where authentic hu-man freedom flourishes. Of course, this entails a real danger: the possibility that human freedom may be abused and turned against oneself. That is precisely what sin is, an act of a free person, which paradoxically destroys human freedom by making one a slave to one’s passions and miseries. Sin is ultimately a negation of the sovereignty of Christ and a rejection of the Kingdom of God.

Even though this Kingdom is, in principle open to all and Chris-tians have already become full citizens by virtue of our Baptism, because of the tension between what is a fact and what is not yet fully manifest, because of the possibility that our freedom may be obliterated by our sin, we still face many obstacles and struggles in order to live according to our vocation.That is why we need the

constant assistance of grace. Just as our very existence is the product of the love of God, just as we came into existence by the grace of God, we can only participate in his love and life, we can only live out our citizenship in the Kingdom of God with the assistance of grace.

That is also why the words of the repentant thief are presented to us this Sunday: “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.” These words are a reminder to each and every one of us of the fact that we were created for a purpose, that each one of us was willed by God for our own sake, that each one of us is invited to participate in the Divine life.Naturally, this invitation demands a response. Fortunately for us, regardless of our existential situation, irrespective of what we have done in the past, the Lord is willing to turn the page and allow us a clean slate. The reply of the Lord to the repentant thief is a great source of comfort but also a call to respon-sibility and conversion, especially for those of us who have received the sacrament of Baptism.

Every single human being shares with Christ our common human-ity, but those of us who have been baptized have been configured to Him in a special way to share in his mission as Priest, Prophet and King. Yes, Christ is King and so are we! Our baptism is not a privilege, as if it was some title of nobility from a temporal king-dom, granted to us by a temporal ruler in retribution for our service or because of our lineage, it is pure gift and carries with it a serious responsibility to be Christ to others, to be stalwarts of this Kingdom of truth and life, holiness, grace, justice, love and peace. We can only advance those causes if we begin by embracing them with all our hearts in communion with Christ. Of course, communion with Christ also entails embracing the Cross, the place where his radical love is displayed, the throne from which he rules and dispenses His love and mercy.

Adoro te devote, one of the most beautiful Eucharistic hymns of all times, has a verse that I often ponder in my own personal prayer in front of the Blessed Sacrament: peto quod petivit latro paenitens, “I only ask what the repentant thief asked.” To remain in the King-dom of God, to be united with the Crucified King, to live out our kingly baptismal vocation, is the only sure path to freedom, truth, life, grace, holiness, love, justice and peace!

PALABRAS DEL PARROCO

Queridos hermanos en Cristo:

Este domingo celebramos la solemnidad de Jesucristo, Rey del universo. Es una celebración que fue añadida al calendario litúrgico a principios del siglo XX por el Papa San Pio X en una época en que los totalitarismos estaban en ascenso, para recordar al mundo entero que el único que verdaderamente puede reclamar soberanía sobre el orden de la creación y el universo entero es Jesucristo, verdadero Dios y verdadero hombre.

Así es, como dice san Pablo en segunda lectura de la carta a los Colosenses, El es Aquel en quien, por quien y para quien todo lo que existe fue creado. El es Rey del universo y es también el Re-ino de Dios mismo, porque en El todo adquiere sentido y alcanza la plenitud.

En esta solemnidad de Cristo Rey, el prefacio de la Plegaria Eucarística, la parte de la Misa que comienza con un breve diálo-go entre el sacerdote y la congregación y concluye con el Santo, Santo, Santo, describe la realidad de este Reino con gran belleza.Dios Padre santo consagró Rey del universo a su Hijo unigénito, nuestro Señor Jesucristo, para que “ofreciéndose a sí mismo como víctima perfecta y pacificadora en el altar del a cruz, consumara el misterio de la redención humana; y sometiendo a su poderla creación entera, entregara a la majestad infinita de Dios un Reino eterno y universal: Reino de la verdad y de la vida, Reino de la santidad y de la gracia, Reino de la justicia, del amor y de la paz.Verdad, vida, santidad, gracia, justicia, amor y paz son las carac-terísticas definitorias del Reino que inaugura la cruz. En efecto, su Pasión, Muerte y Resurrección establecen de una vez y para siempre su soberanía sobre la creación al tiempo que recapitulan el universo entero llevándolo a la plenitud en Dios.

Este Reino está, por supuesto, en “tensión escatológica”, que significa que está en relación al fin de los tiempos, por eso mismo la Solemnidad de Cristo Rey aparece en el calendario de la Igle-sia al final del año litúrgico, para recordarnos que el Reino está entre nosotros, pero que la manifestación plena de los efectos de la resurrección de Cristo no son visibles todavía y lo serán cuando vuelva con gloria y majestad al fin de los tiempos para juzgar a los vivos y a los muertos.

Este Reino, no es un reino de vasallos, sino uno en el que flo-rece la auténtica libertad humana. Por supuesto, esto acarrea un peligro real: la posibilidad de que se abuse de la libertad humana para volverla en contra del hombre mismo. Eso es el pecado, un acto de una persona libre que, paradójicamente, destruye la liber-tad humana haciéndola esclava de pasiones y miserias. El pecado es en última instancia una negación de la soberanía de Cristo y un rechazo del Reino de Dios.

Aunque este Reino está, en principio, abierto a todos y los cristianos ya hemos recibido nuestra carta de ciudadanía en virtud del Bautismo, debido a la tensión que existe entre la realidad y lo que todavía no se ha manifestado, debido a la posibilidad de que nuestra libertad sea obliterada por nuestro pecado, todavía enfrentamos muchos obstáculos y luchas para poder vivir nuestra

vocación. Por eso necesitamos la asistencia constante de la gracia. Así como nuestra misma existencia es producto del amor de Dios, así como comenzamos a existir por la gracia de Dios, así también sola-mente podemos participar en su amor y su vida, solamente podemos vivir nuestra condición de ciudadanos del Reino de Dios con la asis-tencia de la gracia.

Por eso mismo este domingo se nos presentan las palabras del ladrón arrepentido: “Acuérdate de mi cuando entres en tu Reino.” Estas palabras son un recordatorio para todos y cada uno de nosotros. Nos recuerdan el hecho que hemos sido creados con un propósito, que cada uno de nosotros fue deseado por Dios por nosotros mismos, que cada uno de nosotros está llamado a participar de la vida divina. Obviamente esta invitación exige una respuesta. Afortunadamente para nosotros, independientemente de nuestra situación existencial, sin importar lo que hayamos hecho en el pasado, el Señor está dis-puesto a dar vuelta la página y empezar de nuevo. La respuesta del Señor al ladrón arrepentido es una fuente de gran alivio para nosotros pero también un llamado a la responsabilidad y a la conversión, espe-cialmente para aquellos que hemos recibido el sacramento del Bau-tismo.Todo ser humano participa en la común humanidad de Cristo, pero aquellos que hemos recibido el Bautismo hemos sido configurados a El de una manera especial, participamos de su misión de Sacerdote, Profeta y Rey. Así es, ¡Cristo es Rey y nosotros también! Nuestro bautismo no es un privilegio, como si fuera un título de nobleza otor-gado por un príncipe temporal en retribución por un servicio o por nuestro linaje, es puro don y acarrea una grave responsabilidad de ser Cristo para los otros, ser baluartes de este Reino de verdad y vida, santidad, gracia, justicia, amor y paz. Sólo podremos hacer progresar esas causas si comenzamos por abrazarlas con todo nuestro corazón en la comunión con Cristo. Por supuesto que la comunión con Cristo implica abrazar la Cruz, el lugar donde se manifiesta la radicalidad de su amor, el trono desde donde rige el universo y derrama su mi-sericordia.

Adoro te devote, uno de los más hermosos himnos Eucarísticos de todos los tiempos, tiene un verso que a menudo inspira mi oración personal frente al Santísimo Sacramento: peto quod petivit latro pae-nitens, “Solo pido lo que pedía el ladrón arrepentido”. Permanecer en el Reino de Dios, estar unido al Rey Crucificado, vivir nuestra real vocacional bautismal, ¡ese es el único camino seguro a la libertad, la verdad, la vida, la gracia, la santidad, el amor, la justicia y la paz!
