Plan for Reopening of Churches and Resuming the Celebration of Public Sunday and Weekday Masses and the other Sacraments in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis

(05/08/20)

PART I: Context and Principles

To reopen our churches and to resume public liturgical celebrations in this time requires thoughtful planning and preparation to protect the health and safety of the faithful.

Each parish/community is asked to develop a specific, local plan based on these directives and guidelines. If assistance or clarification is needed, please contact Fr. Pat Beidelman.

As parishes and other communities implement their local plans, this will certainly be a process of trial and error. We encourage all to monitor the effectiveness of their plans and adapt them in an ongoing way.

THOSE WHO ARE 65 AND OVER AND THOSE WITH HIGH-RISK HEALTH CONDITIONS SHOULD REMAIN AT HOME. THIS IS THE POPULATION THAT IS MOST VULNERABLE TO THE CORONAVIRUS. OF COURSE, THOSE WHO ARE SYMPTOMATIC OR HAVE TESTED POSITIVE FOR COVID-19 SHOULD NOT ENTER A CHURCH UNTIL RELEASED TO DO SO BY THEIR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONAL.

THE DISPENSATION FROM THE OBLIGATION TO PARTICIPATE AT MASS ON SUNDAYS IS EXTENDED IN THE ARCHDIOCESE OF INDIANAPOLIS AND THROUGHOUT THE STATE OF INDIANA UNTIL AUGUST 15, 2020.

A phased resumption of liturgical activities enables greater spiritual and pastoral care to be provided to the faithful during this difficult time, while continuing to protect the most vulnerable and to slow and contain the spread of COVID-19.

As the guidance from local authorities may vary from place to place, pastoral leaders should follow the directives for the specific area in their decision-making and implementation.

While there is a value in striving to open our churches and to resume our public liturgies, those parishes/communities that are not ready to do so safely should delay their start date.

Cooperation/coordination between pastoral leaders/parishes is encouraged, especially when it protects pastoral leaders who are older and/or have high-risk health conditions.

As people of faith, we believe that the Lord is always at work in our lives, even in this time of many restrictions and sacrifices. Some of God’s greatest graces can come in moments of transition and in all our new beginnings.

St. Benedict Catholic Church Parish Pastoral Council

March 24, 2020 MINUTES:

The Parish Pastoral Council of St. Benedict Catholic Church, Terre Haute, IN, met on this day at 7:00 p.m. via teleconference because of social distancing requirements posed from Covid-19. The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Tony Burk. The opening prayer Holy Virgin of Guadalupe was read. Present: Burk, Evans, Grimes, Hock, Johnson, Miklozek, Miller, Osborn, Shanks. Absent: Priester, Sawtelle, Scheidler. A motion was made to approve the minutes of the February 25, 2020 meeting. Motion approved.

OLD BUSINESS: Conducting Parish Life Under Current Covid-19 Restrictions –

Father/All: The Friars have been having Mass every day at 8:00 a.m. Mass intentions are being followed, and also praying for the Parish during these hard times. Practicing social distancing in parish office. The Soup Kitchen is an essential service, will attempt to keep open as many days as possible.

Will not be celebrating Easter as a community physically together in Church. Father is looking to have Holy Week, Easter, and Sunday Masses streamed. No confessions currently, although parishioners can make a Perfect Act of Contrition.

What to do with Parish Festival? Will restrictions be lifted and the threat lessened to make it still possible in July as planned? Council thought with uncertainty it might be better to have a ‘pop up’ party in September with so much uncertainty. Father will get back with Brian and Dan, Festival Co-Captains.

Our Sunday Visitor – letter to go out showing current contributions to Church. Need to do all we can to continue to contribute even if cannot physically have Mass together.

It was discussed that the Parish Council should form a phone tree (divide up directory among us) and call parishioners to:

Make sure the are ok and safe. See if they have any needs. Let them know about locating streaming Masses from

the parish website.

Parish Council Elections – Still have time to stay on target. Can do voting by mail if needed.

TV/Monitor in Church – All. Grimes made motion to go with Gibson as vendor of total wiring and one camera setup. The motion passed.

Security Committee – Tony has letter to send out to potential members.

Remarks from Father: None. Motion to adjourn: Miller made motion to adjourn. Motion passed. Meeting end 8:22 p.m. NEXT MEETING

The next council meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 28, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. presumably by teleconference again.

Respectfully submitted, Greg Hock
