COUNTDOWN TO LENT: Ash Wednesday is approaching. Lent
begins on March 6th. Ashes that are used to mark the beginning of Lent

Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord. We ask you to bring in your
blessed palms by Sunday, March 3rd.
A Syrophoenician woman came and fell down at the feet of Jesus
and begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter. Mk 7:25
This gospel passage has some interesting and inspiring things. The miracle was
asked not for oneself but for the other. It was a Mother's prayer for her child. Let us learn to be
intercessors, praying for others and not for ourselves alone.
The person healed was not present in the scene. Jesus did not visit the suffering child
but healed her from afar. Near or far wherever we might be, we are never away from the heart
of God. For God's out of sight doesn't mean out of mind.
Jesus in his dialogue with her makes use of the metaphor of the dog. His response ap-
pears as if rude and His attitude towards the gentiles seems as if partial. But that's not the fact,
because God is impartial in His love. His motive was to test her faith. God is
never blind to our tears or deaf to our cries. He just needs our firm faith.
Humiliation doesn't put her off, her persistence pays. She doesn't get
disheartened by Jesus' so called humiliating reply rather she persists in con-
vincing Him with her wise yet humble reply. Let us never give up on God be-
cause he never gives up on us. Fr Joel Lopes, OFM
