FAZtor’s Notes By: Fr. Arnold Zamora

Summer work – Mission accomplished!

The Pastoral Center Fire Escape project was the top priority on the list of things the Archdiocese asked us to do for Deferred Maintenance on our Building and Facility Assessment. Indeed, it was

a big accomplishment this summer, but not without a price. For with big work comes a big price. It cost us $52,130.78, excluding the pre-inspection fee of more or less $3000. So it has been fixed, and we now have a “usable” Emergency Fire Escape that we wish we will never have to use. What an irony! But that is also the value of preparedness.

My priest-friend from New Orleans, Fr. Roel, the pas-tor of St. Genevieve Church, just had a gall bladder sur-gery a week ago. Three times a week, he goes to the dialysis center while waiting for a donor for a kidney transplant. Every now and then, he injects himself with insulin for his diabetes. Yet despite of all of these physi-cal challenges, he managed to rebuild a new rectory and just recently completed the rebuilding of a new church after the old ones were both totally washed out by Hurri-cane Katrina seven years ago. Having heard of Hurricane Isaac coming soon, he told me he was already preparing himself for evacuation. My friend has a body that he needs to take care of seriously, but there is yet another body which is more important than his that he is still able to render service to, the Body of Christ, the Church. This man has escaped several deaths that could have hap-pened internally and externally and he made all the nec-essary preparations for that escape. Please include him and the people of the areas affected by the hurricane in your prayers.

[Editor’s note: We will be hosting a Bone Marrow Do-nor Registration Drive here in the Flanagan Center on September 23, to help out a Parishioner’s nephew. More information to follow.]

Last week, the punch line of my anecdote escaped from my column, perhaps using the new emergency fire escape. So here it is again.

At my granddaughter's wedding, the DJ polled the guests to see who had been married longest. It turned out to be my husband and me. The DJ asked us, "What advice would you give to the newly-married couple?"

I said, "The three most important words in a marriage are, 'You're probably right.'"

Everyone then looked at my husband. He said, "She's probably right."

So Monday is holiday because it’s “Labor Day.” An

innocent child asked: “Should it not be called “No-Labor Day”? My wikifriend says Labor Day pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers. It also symbolizes the end of summer for many Americans.

Welcome to a new month of September and Happy Labor Day!

“ Give them some food yourselves.” - Mark 6:37

ARCHDIOCESE OF SAN FRANCISCO ARCHBISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL 2012

The Archbishop’s Annual Appeal is the method chosen by the pastors to fund the operation of the Archdi-ocese. Eleven pastors (the Archbishop’s Stewardship Council) oversee the process and recommend individual parish assessments. This funding supports ministries pro-vided by the parishes, provides direct ministry when the scope of that ministry is too large or complex for any sin-gle parish to accomplish, maintains centralized services and support for all the parishes and schools, provides continuing education and other services to priests and deacons, maintain communication with the California Conference of Bishops, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Vatican, and provide financial support to these entities to demonstrate once again that “Catholic” means “universal” and that our Church is big-ger than any parish or diocese. The Archbishop’s Annual Appeal helps individu-als, the parish and the Archdiocese realize their respec-tive opportunities as Christian stewards. To date, we have received $38,416.00 (69.34%) in pledges towards our goal of $55,400. Thank you for your generosity and continued support.

DOERS OF THE WORD The second reading for today begins a five-week series of selections from James, a letter that is classified among the so-called “catholic” (or universal) epistles be-cause they are addressed to a general audience rather than to one particular community. Today’s text offers im-portant advice for Christians of every generation. God is first cited as the author of all gifts, and in particular, refer-ence is made to the gift of baptism by which we have been made the “first fruits” of the new creation. What follows is advice based on a very Jewish understanding of the “word” as an active force, operative in the world. We are reminded that unless we, too, be-come “doers” of the word, our claim to faith is empty. To-day and in subsequent weeks the author reminds us that it is equally important to do the “works” of love, for exam-ple, by caring for the “orphans and widows in their afflic-tion.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Labor Day originated in 1882 in New York City under the aegis of the Knights of Labor. Congress made it a legal holiday in 1894. Observing it this week gives us a good opportunity to reflect on the Catholic Church’s social teachings for the last century or so. On May 15, 1891, Pope Leo XIII issued the encyclical Rerum Novar-um on the condition of the working classes and labor. In doing so, he initiated a century in which Catholic teaching became more and more involved in the social issues of the day. Unfortunately relegated to the shadows while the bright lights of controversy shine on other issues, Catho-lic social teaching remains largely unknown to many Catholics. It is the Catholic Church that championed such notions as a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work, and con-tinues to uphold the dignity of the human person against attacks from governments and corporations. Nearly every pope since Leo XIII has issued teachings on the subject. Take some time this Labor Day to familiarize yourself with some aspect of the Church’s social teachings. In doing so, you will be taking responsibility as a member of the Body of Christ to commit yourself to the care of your neighbor. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
