  • August 30, 2020 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parish Family, In our first reading this Sunday, the prophet Jeremiah is feeling very frustrated and upset about his call from God to serve as a prophet: “You duped me, O LORD, and I let myself be duped.” Sometimes in living out our Christian life, we, too, can become frustrated. We might feel as if our efforts are for naught, or that, facing whatever challenges we might have, God has chosen to put our cares on God’s backburner. But then, in some way or another (often through other people), God always comes through, and we realize that we really are cared for. We become excited about this, and want to share it with everyone else. With Jeremiah, we can say, “I say to myself, I will not mention him, I will speak in his name no more. But then it becomes like fire burning in my heart, imprisoned in my bones; I grow weary holding it in, I cannot endure it.” (Jeremiah, 20: 7-9).

*********************************************************************************************** It is wonderful to see more of you coming back to celebrate Mass in person! Of course, we continue to live-stream for those of you who are still hesitant to come. Also, thank you to all of you who have continued to make your Sunday offerings. Our bills have not diminished, and your responsible stewardship shows that being a member of this particular parish is very important to you. As we continue as best we can, one area of Mass that is so important, but which we have held back on due to health concerns, is singing at Mass. The following is a letter from our Director of Music Ministries, André Trahan, who has been keeping abreast of current studies and recommendations: Dear Parishioners of St. Vincent de Paul, Earlier this month the preliminary results from a study commissioned by the NFHS were released investigating the risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission in the performing arts. The study also cites necessary precautions to prevent group spread. The press release of this study can be found at https://www.nfhs.org/articles/second-round-of-performing-arts-aerosol-study-produces-encouraging-preliminary-results/. Though this research is ongoing and on-peer reviewed, it offers us insight into the risks and necessary mitigations to performing arts and, by extension, congregational singing. It is widely known that singing produces many more particulates. Thus, it is a riskier activity; however, if safeguards are put into place, we can greatly reduce the risk of transmission within our congregation. The study offers these necessary precautionary measures, among others:

A social distance of six feet by six feet must be maintained (in all directions). A well-fitting, surgical-style mask must be worn with a Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value of 13, covering the mouth and nose. After 30 minutes, singing should stop to allow for a changing of the volume of air in the room. Proper hygiene practices should be followed (i.e. hand washing, sanitizing, etc.).

I have reviewed the NFHS study and met with Father Ed. Together, we have examined our specific circumstances at St. Vincent de Paul. As always, our guiding principle in making any recommendations is to help ensure the health and safety of every parishioner that attends Mass in person. As such, Father Ed and I deemed it reasonable safe to bring back some congregational singing. Namely, those portions of the Mass that are best suited for the time allotment noted in the study. Beginning in September, we will return to singing the following parts of the Mass:

Eucharistic Acclamations (the Holy, Mystery of Faith, Amen, as well as the Lamb of God) Responsorial Psalm Gospel Acclamation

It is crucial that we continue to follow the practices listed above. We each have a responsibility not only to our health, but that of our neighbor. I pray that each of you and your families continue to be in good heath. I also thank you for your patience and support as we navigate this uncharged territory together. May the Lord bless you and keep you, André Trahan , Director of Music Ministries/Organist

And God bless all of you, always, and in all ways.

    Father Ed

The members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (Vincentians) wish to

thank parishioners for their generous support during the 3rd quarter of the

fiscal year (April, May, and June). During this time, Vincentians made 79

phone visits and assisted 191 people. Rent comprised most of the financial assistance at $26,352. Our neighbors in

need were also assisted with $543 for electric bills, $1,806 for transportation

(car payment, car insurance, car repair) and $589 in miscellaneous assistance.

May the Lord bless you for your kindness.

FOOD DONATIONS – A SIMPLE BUT TREMENDOUS GIFT TO GIVE TO OTHERS

Many of our neighbors live day to day, not knowing where their next meal is coming from. By filling the church donation baskets on a weekly basis, St. Vincent de Paul Parishioners are making an impact – a very large impact! The Vincentian Family Center Pantry is very thankful for each and every donation received to help our Friends in Need. The greatest needs are: Canned Meats Canned Vegetables Fruit Cups Granola Bars Mac & Cheese Peanut Butter & Jelly Pinto Beans & Rice Soup – Cans or Packages

To volunteer at the Pantry, email the Vincentian Family Center:

Have you been thinking about becoming a Roman Catholic?

Perhaps you have been attending Mass with your family or friends and just never “got around to it”. Maybe you aren’t quite sure if you are ready to take this step and want to know more about the Catholic faith before making a commitment. You might have been raised as a Catholic but never had all of your Sacraments of Initiation — Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation. Then you may be ready for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA). If you have children over the age of 7 who have not received their sacraments, we have an RCIA process adapted for children, too! Anyone interested in learning about the Catholic faith or inquiring about initiation in the Church is invited to call the Parish Office at 512-255-1389.

    IS GOD CALLING

    YOU TO TEACH

    (virtually)?

Due to COVID-19 unprecedent-ed pandemic it is a difficult time right now. Our Elementary RE program will be different this

year - we are doing virtual RE classes and are in need of some awesome VOLUNTEERS as Lead Catechists to help us coordinate each grade level. The faith formation program that will be used is called the Pflaum Gospel Weeklies, because the Sunday liturgy is the heart of the parish community. This program familiarizes children and parents with the Gospel proclaimed each week, preparing families for a better celebration of the Sunday Mass and prompting subsequent faith conversations.

The link below is not advertised yet. We want to see who can help with the Elementary RE program this year. We appreciate all the help we can get.

For more details of RE implantation this year,
