Malayali Association of Sri Siddhartha College(MASS)
'MASS' is one of the best associations of our campus. As a fresher in my 1st year.
I was quite nervous with the thought of joining 'MASS'. But now after 4 years, I have had
really good memories and would have no regrets about it at all.
' MASS' welcomes all the Malu Juniors with lots of enthusiasm and fun and thats
exactly what we experienced. Even though staying far from home because of the Malu
bonding we hardly miss home. This is the association with the maximum number of members
and gives the feeling of Mini Kerala in the campus.

Our birthplace, The God’s own country is where heaven resides. Keralahas a varied culture and civilisation which is dravidian in orgin. Legend has it thatparasuram, an avatar of Mahavishnu threw his battle axe into the sea and as aresult Kerala araised. The word ' Kerala ' stand for 'Land of coconuts' in malayalam.
Kerala the state ranks number one in literacy in India with more than 90% .Thus Kerala is in league of spain and Singapore. Children in Kerala are likely tobeg for pens, not money, with nearly 1140 Malayalam newspapers in total circula-tion of Kerala. Malayala Manorama ranks number one, among all regional newspapers in India.
Onam is largest festival in Kerala. Onam lasts for 10 days and marks thehome coming of King Maveli. Pookallam, Thumbithullal, boat race, Pulikkali, andthe elaborate onam lunch are the significant part of onam.

The 14 districts of Kerala show a large varietyright from the food to the Malayalam spoken. Each dis-trict has its own heritage and historical importance. Ev-
ery religion is free to propagate and expand in this state. The people have alwaysbeen happy to welcome any outsider and start trade relations with them. Today wesee a large Gujarati and Marwadi population in Kerala. They do buisness and livehappily and Malayalees have always liked it.
Toddy Bar is another peculiarity in Kerala. Though the Kerala liquour sales ishighest in India, the toddy Bar and spicy food prepared is also a tourist attraction.
Politics is a routine talk in houses in Kerala . The congress and communistare the main stream parties. The son- father, brothers, Mother - Father supportdifferent parties and cause a fight every night.

Malayala cinema industry is based on family stories, melodrama, emotionalfeelings. The maximum number of National Award is shared by a malayalee. India’s1st 3D movie was my dear kuttichathan in Malayalam. Resul Pookutty the Oscarwinner is also a Malayalee.
Unity in Kerala is seen better outside Kerala; where every Malayalee tries toform an association for the unity and better ment of Malayalee. Keraleans workingand studying in different parts of world, come together with no caste and regionaldifferencess to become friends and family. Celebration of Onam, Election dayResults, boat races and many more things bring together every Malayalee residingany where.
Thus, Mass is more of a necessity than an organisation. Unity forms the basehere also. girls and boys both form strength of MASS. The friendship among itsseniors and juniors is reason to be jealous for among others. Here in Mass weaddress seniors with 'Ettan ', ' Ikka ' , 'Achayan' and nick names which is a way toshow our love and friendship.
The dream of Mass Book being fulfilled is by the batch 2003 - 2004 ; I findimmense pleasure in thanking them for their effort. Wishing every Mass - Membergood Luck and happy life.

CONFESSION OF AN ALCOHOLIC
Alcohol and its injurious effects is very much known to one and all.But still it doesn’t stop anyone from drinking. Moreover nowadays it hasbecome a routine of life. But the increase in alcohol consumption has badlyaffected the Indian population of liver cirrhosis is a glaring example of thissituation.
Besides all the illeffects of alcohol that we know today, the mostrecent and serious one is of the road accidents . Even though in every hook
and corner of our roads, its been written'Do not mix drink & drive ', people rarelyseem to notice it. Majority of the roadacidents are caused due to this problem. Inthe recent past, most of us would have lostmany of our beloved ones due to this dan-gerous habit.
People say that they drink when they are happy, and also when they aresad. And infact only these two times occur in one’s life - either happiness orsadness. So eventually they drink almost everyday. Danger lies when thisbecomes an addiction. It is very difficult for an alcoholic get out of this habit.
The most adverse effect is seen in student’s life. They neglect theirstudies and are more drawn towards drinking. It not only impairs the aca-demic aspect but also the physical, mental and spiritual aspect of studentslife. Thus we can say that drinking habit has a parasitic effect on students life.
Care should be taken to avoid it. Proper parental control can preventsuch addiction to a certain extent. But above parents, peer group influencesthe students the most. They should advice and not allow their friends toinculcate addiction to drinking.
We can’t irradiate the practice of drinking alcohol as such. But watwe can do is to limit it to a permmissible extent and gradually get rid of it. Weshould not let ourselves be slaves in the hands of the alcohol instead weshould be the master of ourself as, it is always said , ''Better safe than sorry''.

MYTHOLOGICAL ORGIN OF KERALA
A number of myths and legends persist concerning the origin of Kerala.One such myth is the creation of Kerala by Parasuram, a warrior sage.Parasuram was the incarnation of Maha Vishnu. He was the sixth of the
ten avatars (incarnation) of Vishnu. The word Parasu means 'axe' in Sanskrit and therefore thename Parasuram means 'Ram with Axe'. The aim of his birth was to deliver the world from thearrogant oppression of the ruling caste, the Kshatriyas. He killed all the male Kshatriyas onearth and filled five lakes with their blood. After destroying the Kshatriya kings, he approachedan assembly of learned men to find a way of penitence for his sins. He was advised that, tosave his soul from damnation, he must hand over the lands he had conquered to the Brahmins.He did as they advised and sat in meditation at Gokarnam. There, he was blessed by Varuna -the God of the Oceans and Bhumidevi - Goddess of Earth. From Gokarnam he reachedKanyakumari and threw his axe northward across the ocean. The place where the axe landedwas Kerala. It was 160 katam (an old measure) of land lying between Gokarnam andKanyakumari. Puranas say that it was Parasuram who planted the 64 Brahmin families inKerala, whom he brought down from the north in order to expiate his slaughter of theKshatriyas . According to the puranas, Kerala is also known as Parasurama Kshetram, ie.,'The Land of Parasurama',as the land was reclaimed from sea by him.
Another version of the same story in Hindu mythology is as follow. Kerala was cre-ated by Parasurama, Vishnu's sixth incarnation. He came to destroy Kartavirya, a wickedKshatriya king who terrorized the Brahmins. When Parasurama killed Kartavirya, Kartavirya'svengeful sons murdered Parasurama's father. In retaliation, Parasurama slaughteredKartavirya's sons. They reincarnated twenty-one times, and each time he axed them to deathuntil all were annihilated .
On the advice of a sage, Visvamitra, Parasurama went on a pilgrimage to the oceanshore in the south as penance for the slaughter he had committed. From the shore at Gokarnam,he heaved the execution axe into the ocean. The axe fell at Cape Comorin (komo-rin), about400 miles from where he stood. The land between him and where the axe fell rose up fromthe ocean and became Kerala.
Outside the Kerala History Museum near Ernakulam, this myth is commemorated bya statue of Parasurama throwing his axe into the sea.

According to another story Parasurama was born as the young-est son of a pious hermit Jamadagni. Jamadagni’s ’s wife happened tosee a young couple frolicking in the pool and was overcome by im-pure thoughts. When Jamadagni divined her thoughts, he asked eachof his sons to behead her and all refused except Parasurama.
Parsurama struck off her head with the axe given to him by Shiva.Jamadagni was pleased and promised to grant him a boon. He imme-diately asked for his mother to be made alive. Thus she was restoredto life.
Kerala has many other mythological associations as well. It is here that Rama, King ofAyodhya and seventh incarnation of Vishnu, spent part of his fourteen years of exile. Dur-ing this exile, Rama's wife, the goddess Sita, bathed in a lake. Hence it came to be knownas Devikulum (lake of the goddess).
It was from Kerala that Sita was abducted by Ravana and taken to Sri Lanka.

The Three - Year Old Itch
This insipid effort as an amateur poet is a feeble attempt to encapsulate the dilemma faced
by a 3rd year MBBS student, who can’t make up his mind on whether to'' live life to the
lees '' (my sincerest apologies to ****) or to drown himself in studies. Here goes.........
Comes the 2 - 4 lectures, and I am thoroughly disgusted,
It seems as if my cerebral hemispheres have been busted;
Our esteemed professors are the best,
Whenever it comes to bewildering the mind first ;
On they go about their accomplishments,
Never paying heed to our predicament;
Overdone gesticulations and histrionics galore,
Always fail to dispel the fact that they are a big bore;
God take me back to the time,
When biological cramming held neither reason nor rhyme;
When physics numericals and chemistry equations had us by the neck,
But when compared to THIS monstrosity, they were but a small speck
Now I am at my wit’s end,
Trying to fathom what and how I can comprehend
Today, as I frequent theatres with unconcealed glee,
There always hangs the Damocles’ sword of a supple;
As I look up to the masters of this ''noble '' profession,
I realize I have to make a candid confession;
Whenever I gaze at an eminent urologist or cardiologist,
I get the protentous feeling I’ll fare no better than being a philologist;
Sometimes , I dismiss these thoughts as being borne by youthful truancy,
But then again - truancy could hardly be an alibi for lunacy;
A lunatic asylum, the best in the state,
Would suit me, not as a doctor but as an inmate;
My psychiatric future looks a bit hazy,
But what the hell! All docs must be crazy !!!

Online Dating
Growing Online Dating Relationship
Just like regular real - world relationships, online relationships need tending, to
grow over time. Here are some quick growing tips.
1. Take time and make time. Does your online date get in touch with you regularly?
Do you do the same? Neglecting virtual meetings can be considered abuse or
neglect, so treat each others time with respect. If it is lacking, might mean time to
move on.
2. Communication needs to feel right for both of you.If one of you is too pushy
about meeting, for instance, that can give off bad vibes . So dont rush, take time to
learn more about each others and develop trust.
3. Respect each others privacy. Dont share personal email addresses or digital
photos online, for example, if your online date sent you the information in confi-
dence.
4. Share special online and offline fun times. Online send greeting card, links to
favourite places to upload digital photos of your favourite pet, download music
and video clips, post on favourite forums of interest. Offline - if you are exchang-
ing addresses or post office boxes, send print greeting cards and postcard, small
items from your area (like a key chain with your state bird).
Tend your online relationship. Water it with care and over time it can sprout and
grow.

EMOTIONAL INTEGRATION AND INDIAN SOCIETY
Can you imagine a day without a newspa-per to be relished with a cup of tea with headlinesscreaming like this, '' 18 killed in a bomb blast inHyderabad'' or ''250 murdered in a communal riotin Gujarat'' no it is just impossible. Theseheadliness seem to be common even to the smallchildren of our day. But these type of news fail toevoke even some kind of humanitarian feelings inus. We are supposed to protest, we are supposed
to be empathetic towards such individuals. But we have become numb to these kind ofnews nowadays. Violence and bloodshed have become the order of the day. This is becausepeople have become very much selfcentred.
Society is blind, so also the people living in it. Thus our society is getting devoid ofits essence and there by becoming a society without a soul. Our country is passing througha critical period - economically, politically and socially. No progress can be made in thefield of art, science, Technology and economy without emotional integration.
India cannot play an important role in the international arena unless she sets herown house in order. In this circumstance, emotional integration is essential. By the term,emotional integration we mean not to hurt other’s feelings or sentiments. We must beconsiderate, compassionate and have a fellow feeling along with it.
It is quite difficult for an individual to bring about an evolutionary change all byhimself in a society overnight as it is always said, '' Rome was not built in a day ''. Theneed of emotional integration and its importance was realised by our great leaders whofought in our freedom struggle. Had these leaders been selfcentred, like today’s men,then we would not have perhaps gained independence even till day.

If we trace back history, we see that even those who were born with silver spoons intheir mouth sacrificed their lives for mutual love and coexistence in the society for in-stance, Gautama Buddha sacrificed his whole life for building up an emotionally inte-grated society.
We should strongly beleive in the doctrine of' live and let live ' Inorder to gain a peaceful, harmoni-ous society it is essential that we breakdown all thebarriers and prejudices between people. To incapsulateas a whole, we can say that, 'Earth is one abode and allmankind its children'
